I don't know if it would work for removing that particular bearing, but I learned a really cool trick to remove another small bearing in a tight, blind hole... a pilot bearing for a standard shift hot rod crankshaft. You find something really close to the ID of the bearing, like an extension or a wooden dowel. Pack the cavity inside the bearing and the little space behind it with wheel bearing grease and tap the close fitting dowel or rod or whatever fits pretty close, and as you drive it in, it tries to compress the grease, which it can't do, so it just pushes the bearing right out, as slick as anything. The first time I saw my dad do that back in the day, I thought he was pulling some kind of trick on me. Years later, when changing the 4 speed out for a Tremec 5 speed in my old 68 Rally Sport Camaro, I needed a different sized pilot bearing and remembered Pop's old "trick" and whudda-ya-know! It worked for me, too! Purdy kewl tricks those old timers had! The real tool works as well, I see! :) Take care, Tramp
Great video. My 94 is identical to yours and I bought it new in 94. At 2K I had the bearing replaced along with a Andrews 27 cam installed. It has 50K now and no problems. I like your videos, so keep up the good work.
Hey Tramp, The cam bearing removal/install tool is the way to go. Nothing like having the correct tools to make the job go smooth. A friend and I did a S&S 95" upgrade to his 04 88" Wide Glide years ago . We finished the change up onone full Sat and was riding it by the end of the day. Tools are are important, But so is planning the job to. Have a great day Brother Pistol Pete
That cam gear drive is a thing of beauty. I have 2 TC88 bikes with spring loaded cam chain tensioners. HD really banged their head on that design. Great video.
Cool video Cory, it's always nice to see someone working on their bike and giving a step by step detail. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and know how. Ride safe my friend
Yes, the right tool makes all the difference. There's a guy on YT that pulled the INA with an internal jaw type puller from HF. It worked BUT the mere thought of that cage breaking and those needle bearings dropping into the bottom end didnt appeal to me much, so I bought the JIMS tool. Pacific Mike recently did a full EVO rebuild series. Good stuff. Enjoy your trip!
I did mine on my 99 FXSTC at 23,000 miles just for peace of mind. I used Harley adjustable push rods and have 63,000 on it now with no problems. I had it all done in one day until I went to slide the pushrod covers in place and noticed the cork gaskets and shims laying on the floor. Bummers. Finished it up the next morning. Having that set of tools makes it a piece of cake to do. A friend of mine had that bearing fail and it needed a complete tear down to clean out the bearing pieces. Needed a bore job and all new bearings, Pistons and rods. Total rebuild. He traded it as is for a new bike. I don't think he got much for it in that condition. He never said. I did not ask.
When we talked cams at the Fallen Angels camp out you were going to put the EV13 in the dresser which I agree with. The EV27 would be nice in the lighter heritage but since you decided to put the stock one back in it's a mut point. However, if you were worried about the gear differences, as long as your old cam gear is in good shape you can have a shop press the original gear off and swap it onto the new cam. Then you know it's not going to make noise. I switched cams several times on my FLHS and always used the same gear. There's a keyway on the cam but no key. You have to mark the cam at the keyway so you can maintain your timing. Maybe this will be helpful when you do the dresser. Another thing is the Torrington style bearing goes in one way because the side with the lettering is flat and thick which will take the pressure of installation. The other side is rounded and thin and could flatten out during assembly and ruin the bearing. Take care Amigo! Love the new garage!
Always fun watching skilled hands at work! Final start up must still give you a great deal of satisfaction no matter how many you do. I know I enjoyed seeing and hearing it. Thanks for Sharing!
you just saved my ass i could not figure out where that orange ring on the black plastic gear. i took my cam cover off and it fell right out and i did not see where it came from. Thank you sir !
Some people say to put lifters in if they tear it down and has 30,000 miles. My 95 went 57,000 miles on an Andrews 27 cam before a lifter failed. Luckily it was idling in the driveway. Went back with fueling lifters and also took the plastic breather out and used an S&S Reed breather.
So glad you said the earlier models have the better bearing in them. We just picked up two 1985 evo's with 30,000miles on them and were getting ready to replace them. Thanks Scooter
Man... just wanna say thank you for making vids about working on bikes. So many of the youtubers are ...just talking while riding... or making a brand / image ..or something. Thank you! for just working on a bike and teaching people about what you're doing. I hope the others follow your lead.
I'm gonna look at my bearing on my 88. Never had a problem with it but I'm putting on a new Timing cover so it's time. A real good vid. Well explained. Cheers from UK
I agree on the plastic breather better it than a motor e rebuild. I had a hard time coming to terms with that my view is metal is always better than plastic except sometimes I guess. My Evo has 32K on it I plan to do the bearing and lifters soon.
Going to see if my 93 Heritage has been changed. It has adjustable pushrods and new Jim’s Hydrosolid lifters and I’m hoping ever who replaced the lifters maybe changed that INA bearing also. Thanks for the video. I saved it to use when I do mine. Makes it so much easier. Always learn from your videos.
I still can't believe that you say you are not a mechanic. Great video. I just had a roller lifter seize and damage the cam in my Ultima motor on my 87 FLHS, so it cost me a lot of money to fix. That's because I am not a mechanic like you.
I plan this upgrade as soon as I get my replacement FXRS, it's a 1996 all factory, never opened up, no leaks at the base gaskets or anywhere else for that matter, just a pristine 1996 time capsule, and I intend on keeping it that way exept for a mild cam upgrade, new lifters, and new cam bearing plus chest gasket of course.
Good vid Corey. I did a cams change and gear drive on my 05 twin cam Fatboy recently. I also replaced the cam plate and oil pump with all S&S components. The S&S oil pump put the oil pressure at 30lbs at idle even when hot. Harley was still using those crappy bearings in 05 and of coarse I had two of them to change. Exact same procedure though. Hope that you and the missus are doing well and staying safe. God bless you both.
The garage is looking great, I'm glad it is all working out for you. I'm not a Harley girl, but enjoy all types of bikes. I'm also not a mechanic, but when you explain things, it makes me feel like I can fix anything. Thanks for all your videos. See you soon
Thanks for the video, it’s always nice to sit back and watch someone else do these type of things and going yep that’s how I did it or saying to yourself, it doesn’t look like that bad of a project.
Have to do the same thing on my 97 Heritage this winter. any suggestions on who to get the tools from? oh and thank for the info like always good stuff.
I bought mine from Jim's about 17 years ago and it's a good quality tool. Expensive to get it up here to Canada with the exchange rate and import duty but well worth it in the long run. It looks identical to the one Tramp is using. ✌🇨🇦
@@SaddleTrampTV Hey brother, as long as it gets the job done, who care who made it. Ive got loads of china wrenches in my box and use every one of them.

hey saddletramp tim (swamprat) thanks for the video doin mine now inner cam bearing what a noise it makes waitin on my new cam bearing and puller installer tool
Why did HD do that (cheaper bearing)? They wear out/fail. Then you purchase new bearings, gasket, oil, etc. HD= Hundreds of Dollars $$$. Your shout out to other You Tuber channels is great. Roll on!
I plan on doing this to my 98 softail this winter I’ve had the bearing since right after I bought the bike, I to going to stay with the plastic breather I thought of going with a different cam , and the reed valve breather. But just don’t have the money I bought the gaskets and I have the bearing and that’s gonna have to work
So I recently got a ‘steal’ on a ‘92 Fatboy. I was told the motor was blown, but it came with motor that supposedly runs. I manually turned the motor over n it seems ok. Next step is exposing push rods n watching for any issues I guess. Don’t really want to take it apart but .. What do you think ?
Wow I am so Happy to hear that EVO fire-up, that I too waited to have my Supper (not wanting to spoil my Supper), and I want to tell you something, you know "A Hungary Man is Dangerous" 😉🌮🍗🍔 I'll be doing this same job on my "93 FLHS soon. Ride Safe my Friend... 🏁🗻🏕
Plastic breather might be fine. But what's wrong with an s&s reed valve breather that has no gear at all? I have em in my bikes, but never saw/heard anyone else using those. Any opinions on that?
Gotta question, I know you have to line up the timing marks, however. When you removed the cam gear, did you have to align all the timing marks before removing them? Does that matter at all?
Hi, I'm putting my pinion gear on my 1985 fxr and seem to be having trouble? Did yours just slide on or did you have to do something special to get that pinion gear on?
I have a 1990 flhs with 50,000 miles all done by me . never had the cam out. I heard gixerfoo say to change the lifters due to they could fail like yours did. that cam bearing in the 90 is a good one?
Hi there, nice video, could you tell me what make of tools you used please and we’re I can get them? Many thanks and keep up the good work 👍 cheers Simon.
I always enjoy your videos it was very informative . Is that motor electronic ignition or is it the old point style and if it is how hard is it to change it over to electronic Ignition? Take it easy , be safe . 😎👍
The reason why you fit the needle bearing to the manufacturers specs (maybe with the writing facing out) is because that end is designed to take the force/pressure of being installed using the tool you have or using a drift and hammer. This reduces the chances of deforming the bearing race.
I just bought a 89' softail custom with 31k miles on it. I have no idea if the bearing has been changed or not. The bike has been serviced every year though. Should i check it? 🤔 Im new to Evos so im pretty clueless.

I got a side question, a buddy and I are planning a trip to visit an old riding buddy in Texas. we're coming from Florida and I was reading the websites from the states we'll be crossing about turn signals and handlebar heights requirements. I've noticed some of your bikes have high handlebars and ur in MS(which we'll be crossing). my softail has 13" bars and no turn signals lol! so I'm deep doodoo huh! what's illegal in that regard in your area? thanks.

As much as HD brags & blows about their quality they sure went cheep on parts & the new M8. Good thing U buy low & used , it makes it easier to up grade to better than new. Hope to see ya soon .
Cory, looked before asking, didn't really see anything about the puller and installer for the bearing. Where did you get yours and if you don't mind me asking how much. Thanks man
Used that plastic part because it was cheaper, an to get more business to rebuild engine or sell rider new bike once it fails due to lack of maintenance or knowledge of this part,,,, LLOOOVVEE that potato, 🥔,potato,🥔, sound.
writing on cam bearing must face out! the bearing cage (bearing housing) is beveled, the beveled or tapered side of the bearing goes into the case. nice to have the correct tools for this it's important to be done right.

Hey man. Thanks so much. Means a lot to hear that.
I have an 01 glide and am getting attached to it too. Hard to beat comfortably.
When adjusting push rods, use clothes pins to hold up push rod tubes, been using this method for many many years.Try it next time,no need for bunji cord hooks.Stay safe.
Works just as well. Especially when I don't have any clothes pins.
Cam end play?
It's good
Good vid. Gotta love the simplicity of a evo! Evos for ever!
No doubt!
Awesome! I’ve got a ‘95 wide glide that’s going to get the same treatment except maybe an upgraded cam. Thanks for the details and sweet ride👍
hey saddletramp tim (swamprat) thanks for the video doin mine now inner cam bearing what a noise it makes waitin on my new cam bearing and puller installer tool
Glad I could help
Why did HD do that (cheaper bearing)? They wear out/fail. Then you purchase new bearings, gasket, oil, etc. HD= Hundreds of Dollars $$$. Your shout out to other You Tuber channels is great. Roll on!
I plan on doing this to my 98 softail this winter I’ve had the bearing since right after I bought the bike, I to going to stay with the plastic breather I thought of going with a different cam , and the reed valve breather. But just don’t have the money I bought the gaskets and I have the bearing and that’s gonna have to work
it runs!!! cool video, Saddle Tramp! Safe travels, brother.
Liking the new workshop. Wish I had all that space. Don't see any fire extinguishers though. Hope you've got that covered (and don't mind my saying).
I've got one hanging by the north side window.
Glad you got it all ready for your next road trip!.....and the shop is looking good!
Thanks Nick! The trip was great too.
I really do like these types of videos you do!! reminds me of the old days in the Wooden shop!! Dont get me wrong, I love the new shop!! Congrats!!
Thanks man. I still miss old place believe it or not.
@@davidlangley6671 Run it and see what happens. If it doesn't knock, smoke, and has great compression, go with it.
Look at the bearing, sharp/square shoulder toward the flywheel. That is what the collet grabs
Waiting on firing it up to not spoil the dinner the Missus cooked was absolute GENIUS!
Lol
Great video, I just started an EVO list in youtube and threw it in there.
Right on! Did you get the stickers?
Hello friend, is this place your home??
SaddleTramp, Makes sense you putting it back together with the original gears and breather like you said they know each other. #TRAMPNATION
Good job vato. I wished I new how to work on my bike like you bro.your saving lots of money on labor.
I try
You can do it Jeffe. If you pay someone you might be paying them to learn. Do it yourself. Your capable, your a man n understand physics
Hey Tramp that's what I do too tight is tight right keep it between the mustard and mayo and rubber side down GBU later
where can I get the inner cam bearing installer and removal tools for the evo?
I got mine from ebay.
Nothing better than hearing that “ potato potato” sound at the end of a repair/rebuild.
supposedly, the cage type needle bearings are made for high speed, but i agree with the full compliment bearing....
Once you go bagger you never go back . Rode hardtail shovel till I was 42 bought a 98 Evo dresser just like yours new . And I'm still on it.
Shop V2.0 is looking good. A lift sure beats working on the floor.
Sure does
Good stuff! A long time coming. Well done.
Cool video, like your description of tools I'd do the same as long as I know what they're used for keep videos coming
I like to see this a man turning wrenches & riding his bike this is what I say makes a biker
I just bought two nostalgia bikes. One isnt firing for some reason. Need to know what the tools are called so i can also do those bearings

Wow I am so Happy to hear that EVO fire-up, that I too waited to have my Supper (not wanting to spoil my Supper), and I want to tell you something, you know "A Hungary Man is Dangerous" 😉🌮🍗🍔
I'll be doing this same job on my "93 FLHS soon.
Ride Safe my Friend... 🏁🗻🏕
The evo sounds good
Plastic breather might be fine. But what's wrong with an s&s reed valve breather that has no gear at all?
I have em in my bikes, but never saw/heard anyone else using those. Any opinions on that?
Never usee one before. I pretty much use what I've got already.
Just got a old 83 ironhead! Thats my project now
Right on
Yup evos done needed another time gremlin. Love old ironheads tho
Workshop is looking great!
Smooth funk. 😎
Perfect for Evo days.
Gotta question, I know you have to line up the timing marks, however. When you removed the cam gear, did you have to align all the timing marks before removing them? Does that matter at all?
No. Just have to be sure they're all aligned up when putting everything back together.
Hi, I'm putting my pinion gear on my 1985 fxr and seem to be having trouble? Did yours just slide on or did you have to do something special to get that pinion gear on?
Mine just went right on. The older ones fit onto a tapered shaft.
You said you were 300 miles south of Tupelo. That sounds like the area I live in. I am in George County Mississippi.
Harrison County here
I have a 1990 flhs with 50,000 miles all done by me . never had the cam out. I heard gixerfoo say to change the lifters due to they could fail like yours did. that cam bearing in the 90 is a good one?
From what I understand, they didn't go to the INA bearing until 92.
@@SaddleTrampTVthanks for the reply.
Damn the Evo sounds great!
Sure does!
BROTHER YOU ARE SO SMART YOU'RE DANGEROUS YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO THINK ABOUT MAKING TO YOUR DESTINATION AND GET BACK HOME..🤗🤗👍🇺🇸
Hi there, nice video, could you tell me what make of tools you used please and we’re I can get them? Many thanks and keep up the good work 👍 cheers Simon.
Not sure of the brand. I got them from ebay.
And the Bike Wizard strikes again! Sounds great now mate. ✌️
If were a wizard, I'd a newer bike. Lol... Evo's are a bike for dummies.
Nice work, Evo sounds great, have fun on your trip.
I always enjoy your videos it was very informative . Is that motor electronic ignition or is it the old point style and if it is how hard is it to change it over to electronic Ignition? Take it easy , be safe . 😎👍
I’d leave it points if mine. It’s easier to change points if on the road that to have to get a new electronic ignition.
It's electronic ignition. But it's capable to run on points.
Got an '87 with the same thing going on..good video
Sounds just right! Very nice man👍💯
The reason why you fit the needle bearing to the manufacturers specs (maybe with the writing facing out) is because that end is designed to take the force/pressure of being installed using the tool you have or using a drift and hammer. This reduces the chances of deforming the bearing race.
That looks like a job i should do on my 99 Night Train, evo sounds good, great video.
Go for it!
I just bought a 89' softail custom with 31k miles on it. I have no idea if the bearing has been changed or not. The bike has been serviced every year though. Should i check it? 🤔 Im new to Evos so im pretty clueless.
92 is when they went to the INA bearing. You should be good.
@@SaddleTrampTV Got it👍 thanks man.
Hi Tramp, where did you source the bearing removal / installation tool?
I got the tool from ebay.

I got a side question, a buddy and I are planning a trip to visit an old riding buddy in Texas. we're coming from Florida and I was reading the websites from the states we'll be crossing about turn signals and handlebar heights requirements. I've noticed some of your bikes have high handlebars and ur in MS(which we'll be crossing). my softail has 13" bars and no turn signals lol! so I'm deep doodoo huh! what's illegal in that regard in your area? thanks.
Depends on what the cop wants to deem as "probable cause".
@@SaddleTrampTV I guess I'll put some signals back on the bike, lol! thanks for responding.
Awesome video, bro !! Like all the details you go into really cool !
SaddleTramp thank you so much for doing this video I'm about to install an Andrews EV23 in my 98 Evo. As well as inner bearing lifters and pushrods. Exact same as your black Electra except mines red. Anyway I was feeling a little overwhelmed on how not to screw it up this video helped me a lot. How noticable was your torque and hp after ur upgrade?
Thanks man love all your stuff.
SaddleTramp fan for life I'd love to ride with you
Sure thing, man. Glad this was helpful. I'll say that it woke the motor up on the bagger. Thanks Timothy.
As much as HD brags & blows about their quality they sure went cheep on parts & the new M8. Good thing U buy low & used , it makes it easier to up grade to better than new. Hope to see ya soon .
Great job Tramp! I enjoy your vids a lot. Tranks. Regards from Spain.
Sure thing!
Cory, looked before asking, didn't really see anything about the puller and installer for the bearing. Where did you get yours and if you don't mind me asking how much. Thanks man
I also have a shovelhead and a evo, FXWG and FLHT
Ebay... about 50 bucks
@@SaddleTrampTV wow, for both tools?

where is the campout in tupelo? and what is the name? good video safe ridin rubber down

always learning something from Mr Tramp!
Sometimes you learn what not to do also.
writing on cam bearing must face out! the bearing cage (bearing housing) is beveled, the beveled or tapered side of the bearing goes into the case. nice to have the correct tools for this it's important to be done right.
Glad I did it that way then.
