ive been fortunate to have a couple different ebikes over recent years but i think that for all of the biking community living in the real world that are not fortunate enough to be able to ride various different ebikes for a living such as yourselves and dare i suggest taking it for granted that your be riding a different bike to try next week and then the next and so on. My experience in chatting with people over last few years is that its quite simply the sky high cost of these bikes. I would suggest that if a very high percentage of riders who were asked the question would by completely honest with themselves they would all be thinking about the financial outlay first. Weight, reliability etc are all just convenient excuses to justify not getting an ebike.
Guys this video debate could have been over in 5 minutes if you genuinely realized that most of us simply cant afford them. Simple as.
My next bike will most definitely be a regular mountain bike because I already have an ebike for which I am truly grateful and I just couldnt afford to buy another one.

I was riding mountain bikes for over 30 years before I changed to an emtb. I was very disparaging for a long time but while on a mountain biking holiday in the Yorkshire Dales a couple of years ago, I popped into a bike shop in Skipton (I find it impossible to walk past a bike shop). After nattering for about an hour with the guy in the shop, I was converted. That winter we sold our faithful motorhome and used some of the cash to buy two Haibike Sduro FullSevens. We have never looked back, what a revelation. Most people in our local club thought it was a great idea as it kept us oldies in the game (I am in my mid 70's). I don't use my road bike any more and my eldest grandson has my old mountain bike. As we use them as road bikes we have two sets of wheels, one set running tubeless for when we are off to the trails, the other Marathon Plus MTB tyres which have a low rolling resistance and are pretty well bullet proof! How much do I use it 3,500km in the first year. Sorry for going on a bit!

It took 5 years for me from my 1st emtb test drive to finally buying one. Corona made me to it. I realized that at 50 I am not getting younger and I want to have my fun now, while I still can. EMTBs are fun, a lot of fun. :)

While I love downhill more then uphill I've always enjoyed the climb knowing it makes the descent soo much more enjoyable. Ebikes take away that enjoyment, that achievement. Using one for commuting I understand that but for single track, it seems plain lazy!

@@James-il3tq I disagree. I used to do my climbs (1200m here in Santiago, Chile) at between 60 and 80%, I'm now down to 20-60 % which, remember, also has to compensate the extra weight of my e-bike. I promise you I consider it an achievement when I get on top and I am truly enjoying the resulting downhill even more. Oh, and I'm 58 by the way.

Thanks Guys, I have done the journey from 30 years of mountain biking, and am now on an ebike, I keep myself fit, and my main sport is fell running, and I still run the fells 3 times a week, but I still like my mountain biking.
I found I was just not using my bikes enough anymore, and given the opportunity then I would go running rather than biking.
Now with the ebike, I run Mon,Wed, and Fri, and bike the other days, I have re-discovered the joys of mountain biking, yes they are expensive, but I pay for the experience, one day I will not be able. Carpe Diem.

I bought my first EMTB... a Mondraker E-Crafty in 2016 (aged 56) when I found that I could no longer keep up with the boys whilst out riding my Santa Cruz Tallboy. Although very heavy, it could go anywhere & up almost any hill, but it used to eat transmissions for breakfast due to that stupid (& very expensive to replace) Miranda 14t chainring with it's 8.65mm offset wearing out fast. The bearings went in the Bosch Mk3 motor a just before the 2-year warranty ran out, so the motor was replaced with a new one without issue by LBS... I now own a fantastic do anything, go anywhere, kinder to transmissions, 2018 Merida E160-800. My Mondraker E-Crafty, which was just gathering dust in my garage, found itself a new home last week... Still got my Santa Cruz Tallboy though... My EMTB keeps me out riding, when I'd have probably given up riding altogether... if your legs ain't what they used to be, buying an E-MTB is quite simply a no-brainer... However... I wish the motor would legally do 20mph instead of the stupidly slow 15.5, as the boys still leave me behind when riding on the flat... This is my only gripe...

My experience after 1.5 years having an EmtB and my trusty "analogue" MTB. The hint to this experience is in the word "trusty". The Emtb (E8000 shimano based) is a revelation in many ways. Climbs become a technical joy not a grinding chore. The suspension if set-up correctly enjoys the extra weight. Big rides in the mountains 'eeking out the battery become a challenge and fun. However my EMtb has been away for around 4 months of its life due to motor issues.
In these times my "analogue' bike has been essential to keep out on the trails.
My advice - I'd never just have an EMtb as it is undoubtably more complex, you simply cannot warrant it wont go wrong (water and electrics) and if it does the process of getting it sorted can be protracted. I'm not saying my experience will be replicated, however there are plenty of motors of all manufacturers that have required factory attention. I ride in UK conditons that for 6 months of the year are pretty harsh on an EMtb. A warmer drier climate would be much more conducive to longevity.
If you right now asked me - EMtb or "normal" MTB I would have to say a normal one as I know that it will keep me out riding week after week after week. And keep me kit.
However, I would dearly miss the sheer fun of an EMtb having now owned one and would always be looking at those steep technical trails wanting to ride up them.
So, best of both worlds, keep that old favourite "analogue" bike (if you have one) and get an Emtb to compliment it. Or if you have the budget get both !
If you want just an EMtb choose one in which the manufacturer offer the best in support of the whole bike including motor. I have to say, for many years Specialized have topped this one for me.
If motors were more easily repaired/serviced by a local bike shop (like a shock or fork) that would make a decision much easier. Its the need to send a motor away and the apparent "no maintenance" approach that makes 3rd party repairs so tough. The ability to remove the motor and use the bike as a non-Emtb would also be fantastic for those times when the motor needs a service/attention.
    Just one lone riders opinion....

The bike shop I bought my Giant Trance E+ extends the manufacturer warranty even further, so I'm not too worried about reliability issues. But I do agree that e-MTBs will never outright replace a traditional bike. I will always own a non e-bike, and there's always a place and use for it. However, for any given day on the trails, I reach for the E every time!

This. Summer after a few years away from cycling I needed to do more than simply run my lawn mowing business. I tuned up my vintage road bike and my 1999 hard tail and got to riding our local turf. After maybe the first 100 miles I realized how much I’d missed riding. My 2 wheeled adventures had gone toward the on/off road motorcycles with less bicycle and the disappointments of trying to find dirt trails that a motorcycle is allowed had almost taken my lifetime love of dirt away.
It wasn’t long before I was understanding that the MTB was the tool needed to get my passion back, to help me fight back the physical abuse of my job and feel 2 wheels rolling in the woods again. I was sold on making MTBing front and center 3 seasons a year and hit the internet dreaming about my updating my 1999 hard tail to a full suspension 29er. Once I learned that an EMB was a real thing there was no going back and I shortly bought a Turbo Levo Comp and have not stopped riding since dropping a pant size in my first month and searching out more of the trail networks in my area. I’m back, and don’t ever want to stray again.
Now the flip side, the price tag, the weight, the range. Never would I have ever thought that I’d spent $7500 for a bike. I miss the lightness of my old hard tail and find myself willing to buy a modern non electric MTB to add into my future. Pedaling the Levo with no assist is not great and so range becomes a thing but so far I’ve not gone to zero. No bike is a do it all, all the time, but I wont get off my EMB anytime soon.
Lastly, I’m an older guy and so far no super athlete but improving, the added power the EMB offers allows me to ride up hills that even 20 years ago I had to walk, that alone is more than enough joy for me to justify an EMB. No regrets, no one says I cant ride other bikes if I want the non E.

I use my ebike for a bit of everything, have two batteries and a Badass box for a 48 mile commute.
I also know a gentleman that only has one leg and does 20 miles a day on his eMTB,which he can’t do on a analog bike...yet even he’s had derogatory comments thrown at him...taking off his leg is a great way of guilt tripping those that like to judge others.

One big problem I think which no one mentions is the battery issue. Now , not reliability but replacement. You guys look at it from the rosey now scenario. But frankly, if your paying the price of a small car for some of these bikes, which when you think of it is a massive piss take. For that price they should last a life time. In 6 years will you get a battery for it. Like the car industry the wankers have no standard that way your roped Into their system. All the diff shapes and connections are diff as are the locking systems. One of you guys has a lovely specialized bike with the batt fitting into the frame, looks great , but also very limiting as apposed to the external system, Fkin good luck on that one in the future. These bike firms change their tube shapes and geometry like you change your underpants. Now I know its not the same bike but cheap Chinese commuter Bikes have the back rack battery. That , what ever happens you can bin and replace with a pallet on the back if you want . What you gonna do keep components and buy a new specialized 5k frame ....if your lucky with what ever the new battery craze at the time will be. There are just to many unknowns and all are bloody expensive.

And motor bearings... they talked about ordinary BB bearings being a maint chore, but motors are chock full of bearings that require specialist tools and skills to replace. Selling that 3yr old ebike is going to cause some serious reanalysing of the fun to cost ratio

I spoke to someone about my Turbo Levo in Shropshire on Sunday (who was in his 30s like me), who told me he wasn't old enough for an ebike yet. The sheer amount of riding I can do at places I wouldn't have been able to ride otherwise is pretty astonishing and I can't get enough of it.
Regarding the motor and battery side of things, I don't have any faith with the quality of engineering from bike companies so I expect to have issues but I will lean hard on them to fix any issues I have.

I'm new-again to MTB'ing after a 15 year break and just like you guys said, I used more assistance early on and use less now so I get a good workout in. The barrier to 'let's go riding' is so much lower, I can just jump on and go and get the workout I want while still enjoying the crap out of the trails in my area and the time with my mates! My concern when buying my EMTB was the drivertrain. I can fix a traditional mtn bike, but not a battery or motor. Rather than save a bit and go with an online-only brand, I bought a Levo from my local shop so I'd have a place I can walk in and have them check the bike if needed and a company that has some history of replacing motors even on bikes out of warranty.

Blair Poyntz , Hey Blair, how are you? To answer your question, I’m absolutely over the moon with this bike. I’ve had the opportunity to compare it with both Bosch and Shimano motors and really got to like the Dyname 3.0 much better. It’s torque driven vice what the other motors offer so it’s much easier to maneuver at lower speeds and the other benefit is virtually no motor sounds.....I really didn’t like the whining of the other motors.....This one sounds more like a regular MTB. No whine. The torque is readily available as soon as you apply pressure to the pedals....Away it goes....And much more controllable once you get to the top of the climb. I find it amazing in technical terrain, roots and rocks step ups....Power is delivered immediately with no lag.......Hope this helps you some.....I’v waited a long time and have finally found what I was looking for. Simply amazing and love to ride it. I’ve just come back from a ride today and was out in tech terrain, challenged myself on as many climbs as possible....Completed 44 KMs and still had 54% battery left.....Set my motor to deliver 25% in trail/Eco mode and only used mid mode once.....Ludicrous is exactly what they called it.....Haven’t yet really found a hill to use it on. Let me know if you want to know more.....You can contact/text me at 825-333-2303 if need be.

I want an emtb. But I do think they are expensive. Sure, you get fancy tech and the latest gadgets but still it is not cheap! When comparing almost any ordinary emtb with an mtb they are 2-3 times the price. Last year I bought a Canyon Neuron AL 7.0 which is a decent bike for reasonable money. Paying 3 times that for an emtb is a lot of money. At least for me.
Also I struggle finding an emtb that is fun when standing up sprinting above 25 km/h. Regardless of motor drag the frame geometry makes the handlebar end up in my belly. This makes me wonder if all emtbs are for sitting down most of the time... I search for an xc emtb but cannot find one. Maybe the Levo SL that I will test shortly but that one is even more expensive...
Then it also boils down to choice of motor.
I feel that there are many more choices to make that really makes an impact of the riding experience than for an mtb. I guess I am scared of picking the wrong bike when it might be a costly mistake.

    • @paulraynor2520
      @paulraynor2520 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@tony just out of curiosity how many times on a 20 mile ride are you sprinting out of the saddle? I regularly ride 35 miles on my mtb and only once or twice for 5 seconds am I out the saddle above that pace. Also you seem hooked up on cost of e-mtb?? Have you seen the top of of the ran be Scott spark is £11k?? This is due to components and it being very light. With a motor you don’t need those light components. Think you could buy a very decent level Levo for way less than that.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@paulraynor2520 I come from the mtb xc group of people searching for a fun emtb. I am used to standing up in uphills or on straights like fireroad to accelerate. It is very easy to leave the 25 kmh limitation, with or without motor. I do not want to be limited to only sit down but also stand up. Either because I need to because of the terrain or due to varying my back position to releave stress.
I do not even look at £10k bikes. The ones in my focus are €5-6k (50000-60000 Swedish kronor).
Maybe I need to try more bikes... I will test all makes nearby shortly.
I think I like the Brose or Specialized motor cause of test results.
On my Neuron I miss Scott's Twin Lock even though I barely tried it. Some say ut fills no needs on emtb. Why?
Also I like the price and design on Canyon's :On models. It is hard knowing what to pick.

Would love to get an EMTB but the thing that puts me off are the latest motors from Shimano and Bosch with the rattle when descending. I rode a Cube with a Bosch motor at Whinlatter and loved it but I kept hearing the rattle and thought it was going to fall apart. Then there is the extra weight. Would like to go with Specialized but they are so expensive. Any advice?

Hello guys! I am in a bit of a dilemma and hoping you might have some feedback. I really want to buy my first e-mountain bike because I know just how much of a blast it will be. I have always been a traditional mountain biker, but the idea of having an e-bike and being able to explore so much more territory in a given amount of time (without totally draining myself physically) really sounds exciting to me, especially on the 4-6 hour wilderness rides I like to do. My dilemma is I live in Oregon USA, and all of the wonderful and challenging wilderness trails that I like to ride do not allow e-bikes (at least that's what's indicated on Trailforks.com). I'm tempted to just get the new e-bike and ride it on my favorite trails anyway. After all, who is really going to be patrolling in the middle of the wilderness 15 miles from any civilization. I really don't want to miss out on using my new e-bike to its full potential. What are your thoughts?

Hello, I am not 100% aware of all the laws, but I know there are some class categorization if your read them. Class 1 are the bikes that MUST have pedals, they must NOT have any types of throttle etc. You can go find those classes. Anyways, I want to say that Class 1 bikes are allowed to ANY trail that a normal bike is allowed (I am almost sure). Specialized Turbo Levo is an example or any other normal E-Mountain Bike. You should have pedal, no throttle, you should pedal to be able to gain the assist and I think it should not go beyond 25 miles/h which is plenty. Check those classes again and I am sure you will be happy. Let me know if that helped and happy riding 👍

My opinion is that the price is the biggest hurdle for anyone wanting to buy an e-bike. I mean yes you can just hunt around for the cheapest emtb. But getting the cheapest emtb doesn't always equate to satisfaction. For example if you are use to riding enduro bikes and then you bought a hard tail emtb. You will not go for bigger drops or bigger hits. You always get the bike that suits the riding style you do.
I know people are different and some will be happy enough to get any emtb. I however look at a different point of view. If I am gonna spend money on an emtb I might as well get the one I know that will suit my riding style. If I can't afford an emtb that I like, then I will skip emtbs.

The fitnessaspect is actually better with an ebike since bicycling in general is not good for your biomechanics. When you cycle the t-spine does not integrate with your lower body and the legs never go into full extension. So the less stress you put on your body when cycling the better.

There's many concerns. If you have embn, and your friends doesn't? You are riding faster your friends once again not? If you will have long run, for 2 days, in place without chargers. So you will need 2 batteries, at least.
E-bike cost so much. So, may be if you really want to, you'd better have regular bike, and something like e-scooter or e-bike, that relies on motor completely? I have e-scooter and regular mountain bike. This is 2 completely different dimensions of fun.

    • @golddiggerdave

It's a expansive question, what size of battery 400W,504W,625W. What terrain? What bike. As a example a brand new 504W battery gave me a maximum range of 74 miles on roads a light trails, full on hardcore trail riding around 30 miles (full sus) I have had 99 miles on roads and light trails on a E hard tail 500W. I've just done 55 miles today on a none ebike as I'm building up for 100 mile plus mile ride and don't want to be limited by the range. Then again you can get a 625W bike with a add on battery up to 1250W which would give a mental range and most riders would be exhausted way before the battery ran out. Hope this helps

I just got a new AM bike for my 60th and it's not an ebike. I need a reliable bike that I can run twice a week or more all year round. I know they're great fun while they're working, but if you're main priority is keeping fit, then get a normal bike and find a riding group to suit your level. I will probably get one when I'm starting to creak, but would need a much lighter machine than those on the market, which are almost all unnecessarily powerful and heavy. Also I would require a gearbox, as derailleurs need constant maintenance and don't last 5 minutes round here. Why any e-bikes are fitted with 12 speed sh*t is beyond my ken.

  • @alpinekiwi
    @alpinekiwi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My main reason for not buying one is that the technology is advancing so fast that I would be worried my brand new purchase would be obsolete in just one year. The resale value on any e-bike must be atrocious!
I have ridden a few high end e-bikes from Lapierre, having worked for them for a few years a while back, and would love to have one.
But yeah, next year's models will be lighter again, go further and generally be better. Then your year old pricey toy is no longer worth anything.
No big deal if you don't care about recent trends. Your bike will still work. But what about parts and after sales service? How long will you get that help for?

It is not a technical question, it is mostly a social question as I see it. Everyone think it is fun with e-mtb but buy a normal bike to fit in the social crowd. Problem to have an e-mtb is that there are no races or gatherings for them. You don't want to be the looner everyone is making funny jokes about for being lazy.

    1) Price, not everybody can drop 5k on a bike, for a lot people 2~3k is limit, depends on country as an ebike can be half a years pay.
    2) You can run amateur xc/marathon races on trail bike, you cant on an ebike
3)I like motorcycles and for a price of decent ebike I could get a motorcycle(~6k EUR new), with limited resources i need to decide what would give me more smiles and be more useful
4)Effect on trails and ebikes might be banned in places.

The fact is a 2.3k HT Levo has naff compnents, components of a £600-£800 bike! £1000 upwards would get you a HT with some high end bits. £1500 would get you a FS with decent bits as well, so yes, it’s money.

I took delivery of my first e-mountain bike last week (Haibike hardsevern 4 with the new Yamaha motor). Completely transformed my love of riding that I had lost. It just makes it so much fun and I only use the assistance on hills so on the flat and slight inclines I am going faster than the limit of 15.5 MPH so effectively when you take into account of the much heavier weight of the bike I am working harder than my friends on their standard bikes but I shoot past them up hill. Over 3 hours I actually found I burnt off similar calories but the distances I travelled on the e-bike were almost double to that of my standard bike. Best item I have purchased in many years and I highly recommend anyone to get one and it is thanks to your channel I made this decision !!!

All well and good zooming downhill on a standard full suss analogue mtb but you’ll shed pushing it uphill afterwards. Most of my friends now ALL ride e-mtb’s so peer pressure was never gonna be a issue. So me the choice was clear cut.
