I can see how the song of the south would have been very captivating as a kid, very vibrant scenes with the rotoscoping.
1:03 don’t tell the mouse, but I’ve actually got a copy of that movie on dvd, I think it’s a pirated version from China, 🤫
Preemptive context: splash mountain is (and, sadly, soon that “is” will be “was”) based on the animated portions of the movie. The first time I went to Disneyland when I was six, I went on splash mountain. For some *more* context, while we were in line, I saw the famous drop, and said to my mom “I’m glad we aren’t going on that ride.” It was too late when I realized the log was wet. Boy was I mad. I can look back and laugh now, and the picture from the ride is always fun to look back on. (Not the point of this story, but I still have a hard time going on splash mountain. I can tolerate it once these days, but that’s it). So, between the first and second trip, my parents wanted to convince me that it wasn’t a scary ride, so they (somehow) bought a copy. I have only watched it once, and I don’t really know where the thing went. I hope the disc isn’t cracked or scratched…

Excuse me? I think the style of undone is beautiful. The backgrounds are made with oil paintings, the characters with rotoscoping, I think it's stunning, though it took me a few episodes to get used to
Great video, but Im amazed you didn't mention the movie "Tron", which contrary to Bakshi's version of "Lord of the Rings", really perfected the art of rotoscoping. :)

Great video, thanks. Can one use rotoscoping to change live video to this animated look? I have a film here on TH-cam that I believe can benefit from a unifying style, as it is a combination of live action and models and animation... (What We Do is TOP SECRET)
You wanna prime example of this, look up the show Dream Corp LLC. Now THAT is one beautifully done show, using the semi-real feel of rotoscoping for dream sequences combined with 3d animated settings. Check it out.

A Scanner Darkly is a sci-fi drug movie. You asked what was the point of using this effect if it looks exactly like the original footage. If you actually watch the movie you will notice many reasons why it works. A lot of the characters are hallucinating things such as alien figures and spiders, etc. It also gives the viewer the a drug like feeling while watching it. So that is the point.

Glad you enjoyed it! The first segment was hand drawn and all the other segments were computer generated. The first segment definitely tested my patience. It took forever to finish!

The first part was hand drawn using an iPad and the rest was computer generated. A combination of After Effects and other programs. I'll add it to the list of videos for the future.
Where would you draw the line between rotoscoping and motion capture? It's possible to model a 3D version of a character without using specific dot data or anatomy so would you say that there's a distinction to be made between 3D rotoscoping and motion capture or would you say that if it's 3D we might as well just call it motion capture?
Rotoscoping for vfx is just used in the 2D department because you're rotoing around footage. For animation you can't really draw straight over the footage and leave it at that. You then need to then exaggerate poses and clean up the shapes so it doesnt look rotoscoped.
Mocap creates 3D points in space that then need to be cleaned up by 3D artists.
So I guess that is to say, in animation, both are early stage tools that still need to be cleaned up by anim, but one is a 2D animators tools and another 3D animators tool
Your question about mocap is a bit unclear but yes you can do photogrammetry of a character but you do need to clean it up or your character will be made of millions of points that a computer can't handle.

Darn, I was hoping for an explanation of how rotoscoping was used in Star Wars for the lightsabers since the lightsaber never looked cartoonish.
The process is not much different there. They had some real life props/swords which they used in order to track and add the glowing effect on top with rotoscoping.
The real life props also helped the actors with their performance because they had something to interact with.

You could always try using the apps already on your PC. For example Paint. All you need is a way to load an image and then draw over it.
With a paid application you would have some extra nice features but for starting things out MS Paint could do the trick.
*walking life and scanner darkly are just horrible.* computer tracking is way too visible and spools animation. together with the pretty bad aesthetics, they are really good examples on what to not do with the aid of computers (as you mentioned). distant characters are left still and expressionless and cuts are just too obvious. faster is always cheaper and worse, in these cases. nice and very unbiased presentation, well done.

Sin City wasn't really rotoscoped. It's a regular movie with a video treatment.
THE TANTALIZING FLY is not display a great deal of Rotoscoping. One of the early examples of Rotoscoping can be seen in PERPETUAL MOTION (1920). Another of the advantages of Rotoscoping is the capturing of subtleties in acting that might not be realized by the Animator. These are among the things that add to the sense of the character being alive. It is interesting that Rotoscoping was relied upon for the character running in the video game. This speaks more about the experience level of the Animators working on the fame since any seasoned Animator can animate a running character that is smooth and believable. There is nothing of a major level of acting involved here that would require Rotoscoping.
