- In this quick video I want to talk about Rotoscoping - what it is, why it is so important and why you want to do everything you can to avoid ever having to do it.
If you have After Effects CS5, I recommend using the Roto Brush tool for your rotoscoping work.

+Surfaced Studio thanks! :) I can only recommend fusion & davinci for further tutorials. They're both free and are used a lot in the film industry. Also: introduction to node-systems, which is essential for anyone who wants to get far ;)
Your explanation is so good. You could easily have just talked about this with a few pictures but the way you had in examples as you are describing, such as the olden day version of rotoscoping with the moustache etc, so cool! Great effort put in :)

I've been cracking my head on the net trying to find a way to rotoscope easily and flawlessly without using masks, rotobrush or greenscreen but you have put my mind at ease knowing that this is impossible on a blurred video and without contrasting colours. Thank you for the explanation

Great video! I use rotoscoping on a daily basis for my meme videos. I used to hate it to death but now i've learned to accept it lol. I just put on headphones, fresh pot of coffee and I tune out for a few hours lol.
There are some instances in which it is pretty unavoidable. I think I'm still at the (very strong) dislike stage of rotoscoping hehe

I don't know how I could help. If you don't have a rig, you will have to create one or you will have to work around the fact that you don't actually have one - either way you'll likely need to do some form of 3D integration (I have a whole tutorial series on that topic) :)

In case it helps anyone who just needs to do a "quick and dirty" background removable for a short video, it might be worth checking out unscreen.com (I'm not affiliated with them). Apparently it uses AI to remove backgrounds. I've just tried it and it did a pretty good job. There are a few restrictions in that you can only do very short clips (i.e. 5 seconds) but if you're creating a video meme etc that might be all you need. I hope that helps

That sounds paaaaaainful! Fortunately there's some decent tools out there these days - like the Rotobrush tool in AE or Mocha :D
@@SurfacedStudio lol yes but that was the time of the enthusiasm, I used miro video dc1 IO capture card to take SVHS in the computer, res was 388x274, then all those different sport actions rendered in TGA sequences which I rotoscoped by hand in photoshop after that. Believe that I faked all of that a bit, set slower fps because I was enormous job to all of that by hand in 25fps. Motion blur was a problem but anyway it was huge success for that time for the local tv station where I was working back then. Best wishes :)

Ah I learned what this is 2 years after I did it already 😂. I had this clip of a girl running to another base in softball and I put it into Photoshop and made a gif or something of her running and then I put it and animated it onto a Mario level end background. Was very happy of the results.

this bring painful memories where ppl contacted me to do some light effects for a series, but seems during the shoot nobody was looking at the monitor for the boom comfortably taking long strolls in the upper quarter of the frame, often on house elements, not just sky, and even the reflection of the boom operator in a car glass ... u can imagine the rest, still, at the time I finished the job and was able to buy my first iPhone 2G, which was brand new then
I had similar experiences :) Makes you wanna punch the people who did the shooting - but that's how you learn (from bad experiences, not from punching)

Hey Tobias, I am trying to rotoscope in Hitfilm, using keyframes. But every time I end up having the same problem you showed at 0:22 and it sucks. Feeling desperate... Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

If you are using HitFilm Pro you have mocha HitFilm available - a much better tool for rotoscoping. You can also get mocha HitFilm as an add-on to the express version. Here's a video on rotoscoping using Mocha: th-cam.com/video/5xo0905z3jg/w-d-xo.html
is it possible to animate a mask without moving the mask points so when u are moving some frames and set a new keyframe u can just draw a new mask? i appreciate your tutorials so much!!! Thanks in advice!
You can technically draw a new mask every frame, but you'd then have to animate the old one off screen or use a new layer each time - it'd be easier just to reshape that one mask

I like to create a 3D approximation of whatever I am rotoscoping in Maya or 3DSmax and create a mask that way. It's not good for everything (ie hair) but as you said, plan your shots.
That's not a bad idea - assuming you're quick at creating 3D approximations and matching them to your shot :) I reckon I'd be horrible at that. I usually just end up using Mocha (which is included with AE): th-cam.com/video/5xo0905z3jg/w-d-xo.html

Speaking of film industries from the guy who commented on it, my mom doesn't wany me to go into it but I know I want to because I have a special talent for it. After next year I'm off to college, what do I do?
Giving useful life advice is likely not something I (or anyone else) could (or should) possible do in a TH-cam comment. All I can say is: read as much as you can about what it's actually like in the industry so you know exactly what you are in for - how to get into it, what sort of work you'll do, what hours you'll work, what you'll earn, what your future career prospects are. Don't just go by what you *imagine* it to be like. The more you know the clearer you will be able to make a decision for yourself as to which career you would love to pursue

I rotoed out a man from a green screen and then used Holomatrix on it. it effected the whole original Green screen footage instead of the Rotoed out man. How do i only use effects on my rotoscoped/masked footage? any helpful ideas?

so I just uploaded my newest video (only been a year since the last one) and yes, Rotoscoping is a pain in the.. backside! Its good in the sense that now that I've done it, I will never do that process again and will look to green screen and setup shots better

Been there! Sometimes it's faster to reshoot the scene (or the entire movie) than trying to rotoscope everything manually. Unfortunately that's not always an option, but tools such as Mocha can help: th-cam.com/video/5xo0905z3jg/w-d-xo.html

Give it a shot and report back :) If you manage to create a program that can (properly) auto-mask/rotoscope - I'll use it on my channel (and you'll be putting a lot of people out of work) :D
At 24 frames per second, one minute equals 360 frames to edit.
In my world a minute has 60 seconds. 60 seconds times 24 frames for each second gives me 1440 frames to edit.

That seems like a common side effect of too much rotoscoping (at least for me) 😂🍟
@1:24 DO *NOT* ROTOSCOPE LIKE THIS. Break each limb down to a simple shape. Your results will be much much better and even though you have to go over the footage again and again it will save you time in the long run.

Welcome to VFX :D It's like photoshop for video... 24 frames per second haha! When I first came across rotoscoping I finally felt I could appreciate all the effort that goes into making VFX for movies - even the ones that you don't even notice
