    A review of the Master Grade Shining Gundam from the 1994 anime series Mobile Fighter G Gundam
    Intro - 00:00
    Build - 0:51
    Appearance - 5:38
    Articulation - 7:58
    Gimmicks - 10:41
    Final Verdict - 12:50
    I recently got a bunch of new video production equipment, so decided it'd be fun to test it out on another review. Still, the Shining Gundam is one of those suits that really means a lot to me, so hopefully this review can do it justice.
    - Production notes for me to look back on later and laugh at -
    - This is actually a redo of a previous Shining Gundam review. It was my 3rd (?) video, and was horrendously bad. I took it down a few months after posting.
    - The script was massively long for a pretty simple kit. I think its all the detailing. Probably could've slimmed it up, but again, this review was about testing new equipment so I just said 'eh, it's fine~' and got to work.
    - First up for new equipment, I got the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART series lens. It's a massive step up from the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 I've been using. The clarity and sharpness is just crazy.
    - The new polarizer is also higher quality. It turns out the warmness I mentioned in the Gyan review was the side effect of a cheap polarizer.
    - Next, I got the Canon EF 35mm f/2 lens to replace the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 for articulation shots. Really happy with it, as now I can shoot everything on my 6D mark II. Before I had to always break out my 100D just for the articulation footage. I'm not used to this lens though, so the footage is really zoomed out and has harsh lighting.
    - The new 35mm lens has image stabilization so I got a ton of test shots, mostly handheld. However, with my main footage being locked down and the panning of images being so smooth, the handheld shots really stood out, so I dropped them.
    - Learned how to focus stack. It eliminates the massive blur/bokeh of macro photography. I only used it for the title card though, as it takes a ton of time to do and is rough on my computer. Check my instagram though for the other focus stack tests.
    - I'm not super happy with this title card. There's just too much footage of lead suits so narrowing it down to a single background is really hard, so I got lazy. This title card is a reference to the early episode of G Gundam where Domon fights the Neo Canada guy, and the Shining Gundam emerges from a waterfall.
    - Got a new LED, another Neewer 660. I recently moved out of my apartment and my Polaroid 350 LED (don't ever buy one!) finally gave up so I was down a few lights for this review. The new LED brings me back up to 3 lights. Still, it's 2-3 less than usual, so I had the ISO cranked a little. I'd like to get another LED if I can just to pump more light in.
    - Wish I could've gotten some unpainted shots but they were painted gold years ago, so not much I could've done outside of re-buy the kit, which isn't happening lol The split screen I did could've used some work though...
    - I really overshot this review. Not having to get separate shots for the left and right really made getting footage easy. I didn't use a good 25% of shots.
    - Finally got the Shure SM7B microphone. It's a huge improvement over the Rode Video Pro mic. However, I can't seem to get the quality I want out of it. I need to work on my recording posture and mixing. At the very least, I can remove 'bad equipment' off the list of reasons my audio is so bad haha.
    - Edited this whole thing in a frantic 2 day binge.
    - Finally got to use Adobe Premiere 2020! It's fine. Playback is a little choppy tho.
    - I figured out why the black gradient pops, it's because the gradient has too many values to it, so the extra color of overlays causes Premier to compress the gradient. I got around this by exporting the score footage separately, then reinserting it.
    - Couldn't find a good font color for this review, title card or thumbnail. Gold doesn't exist in digital color, so didn't know what to use
    - "Shining" always looks weird to me lol, so used a new font for the thumb.
    - The color filter was very simple, just a bump to saturation and minor increase to contrast. The background still flickers from TH-cam compression though. I might need to transition to a white background as it wouldn't be crushed as much.
    - Re-did some lines last minute again. Ugh~
    - Like I mentioned in the Gyan review's notes, I don't plan on making any more reviews. Not that I won't make more, I just don't want it in the back of my mind. I would like to redo the Hi-Nu Gundam ver KA review though, so maybe I'll do that at some point. idk, not really making any plans. If I get the urge to make another review, I totally will!
    Regardless, if this is the last video, then thanks for watching and... best of luck on your next build! :)

    Among all the great gunpla reviewers out there you might just be my favorite. Im really glad you've been giving old school kits a lot of spotlight since I originally wrote off getting the G Gundam kits because of their age. Now I want to get all the G Gundam MGs (except maybe the God Gundam cuz of those wonky proportions). Please someone sponsor this dude!

    Definitely agree with you. G Gundam MGs are in the class of their own, especially during the time they were released. I alsohave the MG God Gundam and can still go toe-to-toe with modern MGs foor articulation & solidness.

    • @jegtano7079
      @jegtano7079 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lets be honest here, they are probably the kits that people would change poses more often than the new and more articulated kits. Solid build, articulate enough to hold a ton of poses and most specially, they don't have that much accessories which would usually limit what you could do with a kit. Heck, I've changed mine in a lot more poses in just 5 days compared to my dynamese.

      I’d prefer a 2.0. MGex would mean LED strips in the arms, which would probably hamper mobility. As a mobile fighter, it having less mobility would mean a step down from the older mg. Plus, Bandai would probably put a high price on it.

    Love G-Gundam. This shining gundam kit is my favorite too, it was my second MG build. Yea theres a fair amount of painting to do to get it color accurate, i painted the yellow parts gold as well coloring the thrusters and vulcans for anime accuracy.
    For anyone who decides to build the kit though watch out for the red shoulder parts, the pieces are kinda flimsy, i snapped the left one but its being held in by tension luckily, you cant see the crack from the front.

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, they aren't a huge issue for me. They can really add stability to inner frames, which makes this kit one of the sturdiest Master Grades. I just make a point to mention them, as screws can sometimes be hit or miss (like that shot of the ankle in this video) and to make sure beginners know in advance they'll need a screw driver.

    Finished building this a few weeks ago. The Shining Gundam's probably my favorite Gundam design, and I'm glad I finally got the chance to build it. I'm really glad to hear that mine isn't the only one with overly tight elbows, though I'm not tempting fate by posing it anymore for right now. I also chose to keep the v-fin yellow, though I may try a slightly oranger yellow like what the Hi-Res God Gundam uses down the line. And I need to get some white paint/Gundam Marker to fix the vents on the core lander.
    While I'm sure a 2.0 would look great, I'm glad I built what we got, because the extra work I put into making those parts gold greatly improved the kit's look. And while I'm far from the only one who painted those parts, it did go a long way in making the kit my own.

    • @midengine8576

      Lol mine was great aswell. I do question why Bandai made that black and white piece on the core lander yellow. But one of my legs made me want to die i was at on screw for like 30 mins trying to get it in straight and one of the shoulders didn't want to go in all the way so I stole my god gundams screw and that worked fine but now my god gundam has a slightly wonky shoulder

      Thanks for asking. I used an old can of Krylon spray paint. The color is "Gold Leaf." I really like it because it's a bit duller than other golds, so I think the details are a bit more noticeable.

    Hi redheaphones, what color did you use to paint the gold parts? Is it gaianotes?

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used a Krylon metallic spray paint called "Gold Leaf." I haven't used Krylon paint for anything else, as I only received that color as a gift from a friend, but it did a great job of making a gold that both popped, but didn't distract from the rest of the suit.

      The first Shining Gundam review was taken down 2-3 years ago. It was just a really poor review, even considering it was my 3rd or 4th video. Thankfully, it was only up for about a year and only got ~3,000 views in total before I took it down. I'm much happier with this brand new review! Thanks for asking!

    Everybody love the god gundam. But the shinning gundam what started it all. I prefer the shining over the god gundam cuz the battle theme for the shining gundam was way more inclined to the show than the battle theme of the god gundam.

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that Shining Gundam theme is so iconic. I always miss it when it changes to the God Gundam theme in the second half of the series.

    I really like Shining Gundam more than God Gundam. One of the reason is because it didn't have unnecessary 'backpack', especially for Gundam that use martial arts

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it is a little weird in hindsight to give a martial arts fighter a big backpack lol. I guess it was just a style of the time, considering the crazy wings and satellite cannon found in the following series.

    I realize this is a 3 year old video, but I'm hoping to build this kit based on your recommendation. What did you use for the gold paint? Gundam markers?

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No worries. I used Gundam Markers for the gray and black detailing. For the gold, I used Krylon Gold Leaf. It's not exactly recommended for Gundpla, but I like the look of it. Just has a bit more of a sparkle to it. Best of luck on the build!

    I start to take interest to this kit and the other old kits like MG Ground, God, and the GP's.
    But my mind just keep telling me "Be patience and wait for their 2.0". What should I do? 😭

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      haha, it depends on the kit for sure. Personally, the Shining and Ground Gundam hold up extremely well imo, and are worth picking up now. The God Gundam is also cheap enough that it's worth looking into, even if it doesn't hold up as well. The GP series though, unless you're down for some serious fixing-up, I'd probably hold off on those.
      Regardless, best of luck! :)
