    It might be good to point out that there are also health risk with this, as well as with a mouse. I used this to animate on maya for over 2 years. thinking the same thing as you did. I worked at 2 games studios in NYC, so speed was extremely important. But after 2 years of this I developed tendinitis in my right thumb tendon. I discovered that use a lot of force when gripping a pen, and doing so for 10 hrs a day for 2+ years took a toll on my tendon. I tried loosening my grip as I animated, but once you are in the zone, you get to focused on the shot and forget about ergonomics. I went to 3 months of physical therapy and that's when the doctor suggested to go back to a mouse. Its been 2 years since I did now and it definitely feels much better. I guess the advise I'd say is to "listen" to your hand for any pain that are starting to come up. Do 5 minutes stretches every 3 hours, and if the pain continues switch back to a mouse and get some physical therapy asap. Tablets are amazing, and so is your health :)

      Bonny Baez there is a thing called carpal tunnel syndrome dude, basically a wrist pain caused by using a mouse a lot. It can get fatal, just sayin.

    • @BonnyBaez
      @BonnyBaez 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hikki Komori also very aware of that. I'm being careful not to get it by using a mouse. Again, there are health risks on both. There seems be a thought out there that using a tablet won't cause any health problems. I was told so during animation school, but my experience has proved me wrong. Doing stretches and taking breaks are the best preventions for both :)

      Oh, no! Sorry that you were injured. I have a foam roll around the pen of my first Wacom tablet, but haven't looked at how to pad up my present one. Good tip to others, thank you. Be well.

    The newer tablets have a surface that are notorious for wearing the nib of the pen down, mainly if you draw with it. This can get expensive, but you can just fasten a sheet of Acetate over the surface and there is basically no friction to cause nib wear.

    I've been wanting to do this for awhile, but I tried it once but in some software you need to hold down the middle mouse button to orbit the scene, is this something you can programme to work with the pen?

    $10 mouse against $350 tablet isn't really a fair comparison though.
    Spend $50 on a good mouse like g400s and you'll get great precision along with extra side buttons functionality.
    For anything that doesn't require pressure sensitivity I'd still prefer a good quality mouse... using trusty mx518 for 5 years now.
    Wacom for zbrush, painter and PS.

    • @bobsmith5472
      @bobsmith5472 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      With a pen and tablet, you can naturally use your micromuscles to be more precise and effcient... which obviously cannot compare with a mouse, and that means any mouse in this case.

      Ok, here it is from a CalArts ('82) Animator. Drawing (ie: animating) with a Mouse is like painting an Oil Painting with a Push-broom... Using a Tablet is like having 10,000 Red Sable brushes... NO Contest!

    • @ikerclon
      @ikerclon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do not need a $350 tablet. You can get one as cheap as $50. I have been using a tablet for everything (even gaming!) for more than 10 years and I would not trade it for a mouse. As good as a mouse might be, you will always have to drag it on the table to access your UI elements, while with a tablet pen you hover your hand over the tablet and it's more 'direct'.

    Another important reason is that it helps if you don't wanna have issues with your wrist in the future for using the mouse too much. Your wrist is in an awkward rotation when using the mouse even though you don't feel it, your messing up your wrist little by little

    I'm left handed but I use the mouse with my right hand, with the left hand reserved for hotkeys. Using a tablet would change the whole dynamic, and I can't do that.

    • @SaerasChuu
      @SaerasChuu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My tablet has extra buttons to use for common things, like Ctrl+Z. I just have to set them.
      But I usually have my tablet sitting right underneath my keyboard. I don't usually need to have tablet pen+a tablet button+keyboard hotkey hit all at once. It does take some getting used to, I'll admit, but I found it works very well. makes me feel less cramped while working.

      Look for the Huion new 1060 plus if I dont mistake the number.

      I am left handed and I use the mouse with the right and the left for the keyboard buttons.

    Here is something people are missing. He even said in the vid. Its more NATURAL to write with a pen rather than have a crutch device (i.e. mouse) which isn't precise and quick enough for the masses.

    I have very old tablet (pentagram virtuoso se) It's great for 2D but in 3D doesn't work that good. Maybe new tablets are more suited for 3D use but not mine. Can you maybe show how you work with your tablet in compassion to mouse?

  • @cestarianinhabitant5898
    @cestarianinhabitant5898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Look to 2D digital artists for what tablet to get and how best to learn it, they know their shit, and just always buying wacom is gonna end up unnecessarily costing you a lot more than you should be willing to pay, especially if you don't even need pressure sensitivity to begin with. I recommend looking to huion rather than wacom for any 2D or 3D artist looking to get into using tablets, specifically the best budget deal today for a beginner is the huion 1060 plus. It's like a (non-pro) intuos but costs less than half the price.
    There's a lot of slobbering wacom fanboys out there, but they're essentially the same breed as apple fanboys. A lot of artists just don't know any better and buy the most expensive shit then end up with a choice supportive bias because their shit was so expensive. Don't be that guy.

    What if I have literally infused the movements of the mouse to my brain, it's basically like I'm controlling the cursor with my mind. I don't see a tablet being much faster than my mouse movements.

    I've used a tablet professionally for animation going on 7 years now. I highly recommend it!! It took me about a week to not feel sluggish, but after that it became second nature. Your wrists will thank you in the long run guys, if you're going to be doing this stuff for a long time, it's never too early to think about ergonomic solutions. If you really don't like the tablet solution, I also recommend a vertical mouse! (I use a combo of the two, pen to animate/Vert. Mouse for everything else)

      Bailey Macarthur you can totally use the tablet for 3d (actually pad if it doesn't have a screen) but I think the zintiq would be better for the screen feature as he mentions in the video. The only problem is that its expensive af... If you have the money go for it but you could get used to draw looking up at the screen or something.

    You forgot to mention the most important thing about using a mouse instead of a tablet; RSI and you will get them way faster with a mouse that i consider a torture instrument. Artists and specially young people tend to think their tendons can take zillions click without repercussions. I saw many young and talented artists force to abandon career because of RSI. A tablet wont save you either but you will be able to last longer without major problems. RSI can become quickly chronic so pay attention to symptoms.

    I don't know... I have a Wacom MobileStudio Pro 13 and I do lots of 2D drawing. Mostly in Krita.
    I couldn't imagine doing anything vector or 3D with it. I feel that 3D modeling and 2D vector art require a lot more precision than you'd be getting from a pen. And I don't mean precise hand movement - I mean calculated manipulation of nodes, vertices, edges etc. that simply comes more naturally with a keyboard and a mouse.
    As far as I'm concerned - the best use for a Wacom tablet when it comes to 3D is for sculpting in software like Z-Brush - which I am personally horrible at.

    Wow, this was stupid... I don't know where the massive misconception came from that the cheapest tablet and the most expensive tablet are the only ones that exist... I tried running a google search on how to use maya with a TABLET and everything came up Wacom... I tried using -Wacom in the search and it came up with practically nothing. I personally own a Gaomon tablet, it's a newer brand in the tablet market but a great graphics tablet for the price. I can't seem to select multiple faces on a polygonal object in maya when I set one of the pen buttons as "shift" for some reason. In-fact Maya doesn't seem to take too kindly to a few of the things I've tried to set the pen keys to. Idk if it's just a maya problem but this is the only issue I've had with my tablet, it works great in Sai and PS and pretty much anything else in windows.

    Thank you for your video! I am just getting started with 3D animation and have been on the fence about using a tablet and this video has helped me make the decision.

    I got really wonky when using it. A mouse, was actually easier for me... Until I discovered a way to connect my mouse and pen together!

    Then computer?
    I usually make 3d games .but it seems like making 2d games can be fantastic by this way.

    what is the program that you are using?

  • @whitewolf41581
    @whitewolf41581 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question for you. I'm currently in my 2nd month at Full Sail University. I am however considering changing my degree program to Computer Animtion. I'm not great at drawing but I do know how the body moves and works. I will be 39 when I graduate. Will I have an issue finding work at that age?

    • @Vlfkfnejisjejrjtjrie
      @Vlfkfnejisjejrjtjrie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gun Wraith ..Yes. Get into computers and consider full sail a sunk cost. If your already thinking of changing your degree within two months full sail is not for you. Invest in community college courses while you decide what interests you..apparently whay you're studying now doesn't. This is from another middle aged man who put himself through school.

I cant draw if I cant look at what im drawing on the canvas on the screen of the tablet, it will drive me coo coo
