An animation talking to animators, talking about animating... LOVE IT. This is good content for anyone wanting to get into the process of film making :-)
I've heard so many people say stuff like "CG Animation killed 2D animation because it's cheaper to make" or "It's just computer generated so it's not as artistic as hand-drawn animation". Absolutely not true! The animators spend so much time to make sure that every frame looks beautiful and amazing, and it's one several-year giant group project to do it. There is no "Animate Button", and "computer generated" doesn't mean there's any less work. Every frame is designed, controlled, inspected, touched up, and scrutinized (and it's not an exaggeration-- literally every single frame is looked at closely. Those "everything wrong with ____" videos really annoy me because of that lol) How to Train Your Dragon took 165 million to make, Tangled took 260 million.... it takes a lot of time and labor to make these fantastic films. 2D Animation is of course also beautiful, but I don't believe CG is any less artistic than those beautiful classics. We've reached a time when CG film is just as versatile and flexible as 2D with the help of creative, problem-solving minds (i.e. The Peanuts Movie, Zootopia, Paperman, etc.) Those are my 2 cents. Oh, also they didn't include rendering for some reason, rendering is the final step in which the computer has to calculate the light reflections and refractions in every frame so it doesn't look wireframe/grayscale/flat colored like it does in the software. Each frame can take anywhere from several hours to days to render, which is a lot considering each 1 second of screentime has at least 24 frames in it. For Pixar to render Monsters University, it took them over 100 million CPU hours. Most studios buy a large collection of computers, or a "render farm", to make the process go much faster.
I know this has been done a million times but I need one for myself to look at 1. Story 2. Art 3.Modeling 4.Rigging 5.Surfaces 6.Rough layout 7. Enceos lol nah it still is QUITE an issue. thats why companies have render farms so they can speed up the process of production. im working in animation right now and a scene with say 400 frames if all set up and lighted can take 3 days to a week to render depending on the project scope. try to render a scene from UP on your computer and watch it sit there for about a month or so trying to compute all those photons lol its not so much computer being faster its the graphics cards ability to actually read whats being computed by the porgram and then trying to make it into a format thats easier to view at your local movie theater. while at the same time keepig a very high standard of quality. so its actually become more expensive, but as you can imagine all the millions poured into hollywood can pay for things like this.

Ever since my studio shifted to Redshift rendering we've gotten used to seeing our renders done the next day! Pretty convenient for a small VFX studio on tight timelines. Vray/Renderman still take a bloody eternity, however the quality is better.
I just turned 16 and I am in college. I am watching this for my 3D animation class for digital media. I am working on this at 9:49 PM. My mother walked in (scaring me) and saw what I'm watching and she said "I thought you were doing homework." :(
As someone who wants to be an animator when they grow up, this is SO COOL!! SO HELPFUL!!! I knew most of these, but some departments I had no idea existed!
I hope they get paid very good. Their art work is the reason a lot of people are the way they are now because of all the childhood movies that inspired us while growing up.
One of the guys I went to school with (in Australia), Pieter Lommerse, was always drawing really good comics at school. And he’s spent over 20 years now working as a Director of Creative Affairs in the Animation Industry for Disney. Goes to show that all that “time wasting” at school (teachers’ words) can turn into a great career.
Why are people criticizing movies anyway? Movies are made to entertain you. Now it’s just “that movie is trash, don’t watch it” and “OMG THAT MOVIE IS SO GOOD WATCH IT!” That is NOT the case. If you enjoy the movie, that’s all that counts. Don’t listen to “THAT MOVIE IS HORRIBLE”. That is that PERSON’S OPINION. People were all saying “THE EMOJI MOVIE WAS HORRIBLE” but me and my friends actually ENJOYED it. It’s YOUR entertainment that counts, not someone’s opinion!! L Lawliet -Rhyuzaki- You know there's been movies that have failed in the box office before and it's always happened. Sure he may become an animator and everything but he should worry more about how good a movie will turn out. Everyone nowadays are just criticizing films but that's usually before they even get a chance to see it like Ghostbusters 2016. Plus there are new animated films coming out this year that I think are going to be shit like "The Boss Baby" and "The Emoji Movie." Even though I haven't watched those films yet I have the right to criticize them as the purpose of the movie trailers is to give us an idea if the movie will be any good or not before we see them. Unless this person can handle all the hatred he'll get from his own movie regardless how good the animation is, I'd suggest he gets a different hobby to make a living out of.

And this is the surface level stuff. Cameras in virtual space are just as complicated as REAL cameras, and it is hard to find where to put the camera before the scene has detail
LastbutNotFirst I understand the process, and how demanding it can all be. I don’t personally animate professionally, but have multiple friends who do, and understand how stressful it can me.
@@riley530 lol yah. ive done a bunch of animations for people and companies ive worked at.. people have no idea how many years of just fucking with software it takes before you can even feel confident enough to charge someone for your services. i did a animation for a comic book company. they wanted pixar-like animation.. and i did it.. for 400 bucks. they decided to steal my animation, not pay me for half of it.. and went on to become a very successful company thanks to putting my animation on their website. it's a rough gig to do if you freelance. i should have gotten around 1000 dollars for my animation i did. ended up with 200 bucks and stolen work. lol

"We could make a 100% drawn movie (and bad syncro too) but we just like 3D much better and it's 'easier' "
But it's nicely made to see what they do behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing!
2:44 "Shiitake mushrooms!"
I see what you did there.
This was so much better than watching the actual movie. Loved it. Smile and wave boys.
"Someone slim down my wireframe!"
😁😁😁
Imagine having one of these guys as your parents... amazing
8:40 My Dream Job !
Very interesting! I knew they draw storyboards, but I didn't know they actually turn them into animated draft blueprints.
Are you telling me....
That a *penguin..* taught me more about animation then my *professional* university?
This is my favorite video on TH-cam.💯💯💯
Who watched just for HTTYD lol
meeee lol. clicked because of the thumbnail
Meeeeeeee lmao
i'm 23 And still watching animation ! i'm greatfull and thankfull
I kind of think the Voice Actors feel a bit left out. :P
True
they always get the spotlight, glad everyone is getting attention
+jmalmsten They made a silent film hahaha.
Talk shows: We show actors!
Also talk shows: Allow an Executive and/or Actor to represent an entire movie.
Great! I'm generally the first time I see what is real rigging and how the whole team does it!
Nice instructional video, thanks for sharing
This is really interesting I want to make a movie when I grow up. Though this probably can't be cheap
my Hiccup from how to train your dragon is sexy of the bits
I love animation movies and I assumed such wonderful input. Great minds & artists.
Wow that's a lot of work 😶
well given it takes you about 10-20 years to even learn these skills and master them.. yeah. :)
And this is the surface level stuff. Cameras in virtual space are just as complicated as REAL cameras, and it is hard to find where to put the camera before the scene has detail
@@riley530 you do animation / 3d too?
LastbutNotFirst I understand the process, and how demanding it can all be. I don’t personally animate professionally, but have multiple friends who do, and understand how stressful it can me.
@@riley530 lol yah. ive done a bunch of animations for people and companies ive worked at.. people have no idea how many years of just fucking with software it takes before you can even feel confident enough to charge someone for your services. i did a animation for a comic book company. they wanted pixar-like animation.. and i did it.. for 400 bucks. they decided to steal my animation, not pay me for half of it.. and went on to become a very successful company thanks to putting my animation on their website. it's a rough gig to do if you freelance. i should have gotten around 1000 dollars for my animation i did. ended up with 200 bucks and stolen work. lol
Brian Jefcoat is a great guy. Super talented and one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet. Been a long time Bri!
yo quiero ese trabajo!!!
Its all about many artists courage...Hatts off u guys.
2:39 what the hell is around his stylus o,o
+Yuuva i guess it is for a more comfy grip
+Yuuva Custom grip, either for comfort or a different feel. I used to use rubber bands or foam to fatten up my Wacom stylus to that of a large Sharpie when I'd switch out to the felt marker tip.
+Yuuva I don't know what the other reply's are talking about. It's used so that your fingers don't stick to your screen/tablet.
They're talking about the stylus, not the drawing glove
it's a grip
All Steps are perfectly packed!!!👏👏
You forgot the most important part
When I come and watch the movie for free
The least I can say thank you
finally, after all my intrest, i found how it works in the industry (don't know th right exact word in english)
thanks for this video
Thanks for posting this video i love some of dreamworks films and i have been asking myself how they are made very useful for me.But where does voice acting comes in ?
i am glad they use Maya cause i am learning how to use it to do animation
I think it's somewhere before animation. Also I'm learning maya too.
Voice acting can be done after parts of the script are finalized. It does not have a super strict deadline.
why would those 115 people dislike something so informative.
What renderer are they using?
+Song Moralde they use 3delight.com its rendeman
Thank you! :)
+CGMeetup THOSE COPYCATS, RENDERMAN IS PIXAR'S SOFTWARE
+Bounce Animation Pixar sells their older versions of it to make money off the competition & juice creativity in the industry. It's kind of a win all around. Competition makes a film & they make money, competition does something they haven't they learn from it, & since they make it they'll always be a step ahead with whatever they're doing in house.
+Jack Curran Lol this nigga's so mad.
It seems like such a headache but the end result makes it all worth it.
which is the animation software used at 9:12?
+danyro90 i think it's inhouse software
+danyro90 That's Autodesk Maya and many more other software like Zbrush, Houdni and there in house software.
