11 of my grand masterpiece babies (films) are: 1. Fantasia (1940) 2. The Godfather (1972) 3. The Godfather: Part II (1974) 4. Pulp Fiction (1994) 5. And Your Mother Too? "Y Tu Mama Tambien" (2001) 6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 7. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) 8. Die Hard (1988) 9. The Dark Knight (2008) 10. Psycho (1960) 11. Goodfellas (1990) Those are my grand babies and the outstanding 11 spaghetti films with beautiful extra sauce.
I'm so happy that you put The Last Crusade in the masterpiece tier, I've watched it like three times in the last week because it may suddenly be my favorite movie ever for different reasons than you said, even.
David Bordwell wrote a piece I love about the "adolescent window" -- artworks you discover at a point in your life when you are most impressionable, when things seem fresh and exciting in ways they never can again. Those might be the equivalent of your "babies." I didn't realize it when I was in my mid-teens, but three of the essential landmark movies that rocked my world and essentially shaped me, that remain essential to what I chose to do with my personal/professional life from that point on, came out in a narrow two-year span: Polanski's "Chinatown" (1974), Altman's "Nashville" (1975) and Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" (1975). I've had life-altering experiences with other movies, older and newer (from Buster Keaton to Chabrol to Wenders to the Coen brothers), but none were quite as transformative as those early encounters, arriving when they did -- in film history and my development as a person. P.S. Although seeing a movie for the first time can be an indelible event, I personally could never put a movie on an "all-time fave" list if I hadn't seen it at least two or three times. Some people call me a formalist (as an insult or an compliment) but structure and framing and texture and rhythm mean a lot to me... because I see movies as more like music than any other art form. I will say that "Jeanne Dielman," for example, is an irreplaceable experience that can never be repeated, though, so that one I've only seen once.
I was vibing with this so hard, and then you said some UNFORGIVABLE things about TREE OF LIFE. Sir, you’ve put a cinematic pebble in my shoe, darn you!
I'm glad somebody else gives High and Low the time of day. I just watched it last month and never heard anyone talk about that one out of his filmography. The very last shot is perfectly haunting and I need it as my wallpaper at my wage slave job.
I really love that movie, but that's probably because a) I like films where the plot is just a character getting themselves into increasingly worse situations, and b) I can relate to accidentally getting way too high and having to not look like a complete dumbass in social situations.
Great video, I’ve always been into seeing peoples top 100’s and how they change over time. I’m curious if you’d change the “ever changing top 100” after this video. I’m curious which movies might make it in and where they’d place. In this video alone you mentioned the worst person in the world, l’arggent, fire walk with me, and La la land
An outlier category idea: 'More of a reference...' where the movie has since become (or always had been) so ingrained in pop culture that it's impossible to properly measure it as a pure movie going experience. 'The Shining' is a good example.
Posting to fight in Laura's corner. The ultimate and perhaps greatest noir, whilst not feeling like a by-the-numbers noir film. Amazing fidgeting detective. Amazing soundtrack. I think you should revisit but ya kna, there's a load of good shit on here.
Funny - Laura would definitely fall under “my babies.” The perfect noir that breaks the noir rules, the sensitive way it delves into misogyny even when divorced from sexual attraction. It’s so perfect.
“Tree of life” is a masterpiece. So is “Knight of Cups” and “Days of heaven” as well as “thin red line” by the same director. Sad that you don’t love Malick movies…..go watch!!
Roger Ebert right before his passing placed Tree of Life in his top 10, considering it a response to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I think he’s quite right and that it is a masterpiece.
