I heard the statistic that 50 of 100 of the critics’ list have Criterion disc releases. Also that Sight and Sound is British and maybe some of the success of Jeanne Dielman is due to a Joanna Hogg programmed full Ackerman retrospective in London.
Ackerman is actually still pretty inaccessible on Region 2/B physical media. The same is true of some of Kiarostami’s Koker trilogy. I know the Bfi player now shows Jeanne Dielman, but prior to this I wonder how UK and Irish people saw it.

I participated in the Sight & Sound "Greatest of All Time" polls in 2002 and 2012, so this prompted me to go back and look at my past lists. In 2012, mine (in alphabetical order) was:
    Barry Lyndon (Kubrick, 1975)
    Chinatown (Polanski, 1974)
    Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941)
    Late Spring (Ozu, 1949)
    Nashville (Altman, 1975)
Only Angels Have Wings (Hawks, 1939)
    Our Hospitality (Keaton, 1923)
    Sansho Dayu (Mizoguchi, 1954)
    Trouble in Paradise (Lubitsch, 1932)
    Vertigo (Hitchcock,1958)
Notes: These are movies that made me who I am and shaped my love of cinema. I would also defend each and every one of them as an awe-inspiring work of art. I looked at my 2002 list and some of the titles are different, but the overall contours are much the same: Our Hospitality instead of Sherlock Jr. for Buster Keaton, film’s greatest (and funniest) visual philosopher; the inevitable Citizen Kane, because no great movie has ever been more dynamic, ingenious and sheer fun - we shouldn’t take it for granted (last time I also had The Magnificent Ambersons on my list, a film I love as much as Kane, but I wanted to make room for other auteurs); Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon instead of 2001: A Space Odyssey because it is equally visionary and gorgeous, and perhaps slightly more poignant. [...] Others will have to champion films such as Sunrise (F.W. Murnau, 1927), Kings of the Road (Wim Wenders, 1976), The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955), Playtime (Jacques Tati, 1967), The Scarlet Empress (Josef von Sternberg, 1934), Holiday (George Cukor, 1938), Miller’s Crossing & No Country for Old Men (Joel & Ethan Coen, 1990 & 2007), Letter From an Unknown Woman & The Earrings of Madame de… (Max Ophüls, 1948 & 1953), Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowski, 1970) and Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (Errol Morris, 1997).

Re: Haneke: Haneke and Claire Denis are quite different filmmakers, but they are contemporary with each other (Denis first feature 1988, Haneke 1990) and equally masterful, and share at least Binoche and Huppert in common as actresses that they cast.
I think it would be rewarding to watch a few of their well known film in alteration if both directors are still largely unseen by you. These are some of the very best recent-ish films there are. Haneke’s style is a benchmark for authoritativeness.

The format means that if the hundreds of people who made the list had Twelve Angry Men as their 11th best movie of all time then although it should be 11th on the list it would actually not appear in the top hundred at all.

I like it, every time I watch it the last few minutes always get my heart racing and it's visually beautiful with the colors and so on - which I think is not a common appreciation of a Hitchcock film. Morbid erotic obsession is Hitchcock's big theme running thru his oeuvre and Vertigo is kind of culminatinon of that (tho if it's a culmination that makes Psycho a..apotheosis?). Kim Novak's performance within a performance is very admirable. It always felt very flawed to me mainly b/c of well, the big reveal moment towards the end - wouldn't even call it a twist as you're led to suspect it's coming, anyway, the scene where a character just starts randomly 'writing a letter' but really just talking straight to the camera, I never liked how they did that, felt inelegant and contrived, like they really couldn't think of any other way to do it. And it wasn't seen as a major film at all in its own day, despite Hitchcock being long established as one of the biggest directors in the world. While I got sick of seeing Citizen Kane at the top of every list, I find it a far more understandeable choice, being a total game-changer made by a wunderkind newcomer to the industry.

@@leorrocher in terms f Hitchcock getting meta and coming to terms with his own themes and his own obsessions that fuel his film-making, Rear Window, vertigo, and Psycho are the most interesting on that front and are usually the critics' choices (North by Northwest also, which is self-referential in a more light-hearted way). But they're all also fairly flawed imo. The perfect Hitchcock movie, meaning the most flawless execution of his style that I would show to someone who wanted to know what a Hitchcock movie is like or why Hitchcock is considered great - I'd show them Notorious every time

    • @tatehildyard5332
      @tatehildyard5332 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Fair point, but I honestly think that impact on the culture/art form is sort of the main criteria for a lot of the people who submitted ballots for this. The value of a list like this and it’s specific reputation is that it’s basically a pretty comprehensive genealogical record of cinema and it’s history/evolution. Get Out is a really good movie on its own, but it’s also something with a real legacy. It’s going to open a lot of doors down the line in terms of genre filmmaking and that I think makes it deserve its spot.
