unleashed wii/ps2 aren't here since they're basically an entirely different game from their HD counterparts, with completely different levels. please stop commenting about it, i am aware of its existence and even use it as an example at 0:19.
also i completely forgot about the Classic Collection on until someone mentioned it in the comments, it's probably worse than the Sonic & Knuckles Collection since it has some mild screencrunch, lag, and lower quality sound effects. someone also mentioned the ultimate genesis collection since it doesn't allow you to lock Sonic 3 onto Sonic & Knuckles and similarly has some sound issues. Really depends if the S&K collection's midis are a dealbreaker for you, though.
honestly being the version I play the most I like it.. also fun fact.. you can access the level select in the knuckles in sonic 2 version... they got rid of it in normal sonic 2 and 3 but not 2 for some odd reason.. it's kinda funny though

- Java ME is pretty self-explanatory. Only Sonic is playable, it only has four of the zones (which aren't in the right order), wonky physics, cruddy music renditions. Different devices got different versions, but they're all cut down. Most have a vertical aspect ratio, but most at least show more on the top and bottom to compensate. The lowest end versions don't count per her criteria, at least, since they're a completely different game, but the others are bad.
- There's two Android versions. The one we got was a port of Gameloft's version and is absolutely abysmal (bad touch dpad without a dedicated jump button - up is jump, still has MIDI music, life count, still missing stages, technical issues galore). It's an absolutely rancid port, one of the worst mobile ports in the franchise.
- The other's a port that never left Japan by Sega themselves that I wouldn't put on this list, and is a lot more faithful to the GBA original (all content except the Tiny Chao Garden's intact including music and menus, physics feel much closer - rolling doesn't lock your jump movement), but it still has MIDI music (i.e. actual MIDI music) and is hard capped to 15 FPS. Unfortunately, it's a case where the gameplay logic's not designed to go above that, but all in all it's a far higher quality port than the others. Its framerate and lack of controller support are its only major shortcomings imo, which makes that all the more disappointing. They were so close!

The Sonic CD intro isn't really AI upscaled. Not fully. It's incredibly intuitive, where animators will fix messed up frames from the AI, it's by far the best version of the intro we've ever gotten fidelity wise.
True; fidelity wise, it's probably the best the intro's ever gonna look, however, they messed up the audio sync, so it's still not without issues.
I'd argue the worst version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles would be the version that was released on Xbox Live Arcade, since it has a forced bilinear filter, pretty awful sound mixing and the outright removal of cheats and data select in favor of three save states.
Yeah I was devastated upon realizing that I couldn't select a level afterwards. Got all of those Super Emeralds for nothing.

Sonic Advance has a port for the Nokia N Gage called "Sonic N". As far as I know it's 100% the same game, just with the sides of the screen cut off so that you're left with a thin vertical slice of visibility.

This is probably what they meant by "Sonic was never good." They only played the bad ports of the games, not the good ones.

Regarding the performance of the modern version of SADX, as far as I know the problem is that they are using the Sleep() call in order to limit the framerate; Sleep() causes the game (well, technically the thread) to stop processing and give up the CPU for *at least* a certain amount of milliseconds; the problem is that it could well end up being over that amount. Due to various factors, the more powerful a computer is, the more likely the game is to sleep for a longer amount of time. This ends up creating a paradox on games that misuse sleep in this manner where the more powerful the system and the less resources being used, the worse the game performs.
This happens with Worms Ultimate Mayhem (Worms 4 Mayhem remake) strangely enough. It can be fixed with a unofficial anniversary patch.

4:00 I would probably say the DS collection ("Sonic Classic Collection") version is a tad bit worse than the PC port imo. Choppy music, a lot of slowdown in some sections, and some really straining special stages lol

Sonic Adventure's dozens of ports that continuously break the game more and more make me so sad. As someone who's played the original on her Dreamcast on a CRT, it's a STUNNING looking video game for 1998/99 and still feels great to play.
As someone who first played Sonic 3 on PC, it warms my heart to hear appreciation for the MIDI music.
(Confession: I lowkey had a visceral reaction to the Genesis Carnival Night music upon playing that version years later.
I'd argue that ultimate genesis collection is actually the worst way to play 3 & knuckles because it has no 3 & knuckles, they forgot to include lock on so you miss out on half the game

I liked this, it was very informative. Here's a few more for fun.
The worst way to play Sonic Spinball is on the GBA Sega Smash Pack. Aside from inevitable screen crunch issues, like not being able to see any of the text in bonus stages, there's only two songs in the entire game (title screen and toxic caves) and the sound effects are extremely crunchy.
The worst way to play Sonic 3D Blast is arguably the PC version, since it has the worst special stages of the three. But the rest of the game is based on the Saturn version, so it really depends on how you feel about the Genesis version.
The worst way to play Tails Adventure is through Sonic Adventure DX. The versions that offer Game Gear titles have Tails Adventure and Sonic Blast as 100% rewards. But for some reason, Tails Adventure has a very dark filter on it that you can't remove. You can still see the game, but not in its full color depth, thanks to this dumb filter.
Speaking of, arguably the worst way to play Sonic Blast is the Master System version. It's unoptimized for the wider screen compared to Game Gear, resulting in very noticable and ugly graphical bugs such as a giant chunk of wall appearing and disappearing in areas of the final zone. The final boss arena's colors are also glitched. Still, it depends on how badly you want the wider view. Assuming you choose to play Sonic Blast at all.
The worst way to play Sonic the Fighters is through the Gems Collection. The game is perfectly playable but has several graphical glitches, most notably in the Canyon Cruise (layering issues with river) and Death Egg's Eye (missing Earth and grey space) arenas, as well as the very laggy ending sequence.
I actually did mention 3D Blast PC in the script originally, but I didn't really have much to say beyond the special stages being worse so I just cut the segment since it's arguable whether or not it counts as a mainline game anyways.
I personally feel like it has more of a spin-off vibe, but I couldn't really articulate why.
I think it's also worth noting that the PC version of 3D Blast is also missing several graphical effects from the Saturn version, and even has reduced color depth.
This is due to the game being made with the lowest common denominator of PCs in mind to reach the widest possible demographic.
At that rate, I'd say it definitely earns the worst version title.

Playing the game in general
Sonic Superstars runs perfectly on Steam Deck while Frontiers can only run at 30 but is otherwise uncompromised. Sonic Adventure DX also runs flawlessly despite being said to be unsupported. The Switch 2 really needs to come out.

For PS3 players of sonic games, I reccomend turning down the image resolution in the settings fron 1080p to 720p, it really helps with intensive games like the sonic titles, but even first party graphical power houses like Gran Turismo 5 & 6 (note: if the game is already capped to 720p resolution, it wont change a thing)
Edit: if you also own a fairly new/modern smart TV, you'll probably have an upscaler built in, less strain on the PS3 is always good for both temperatures, framerate etc, and the only drawback is a slightly blurrier/less sharp image, but its still HD
huh. that’s weird. i played gens on 1080p and didn’t really notice framerate issues. as for unleashed, that wouldn’t really change a lot since it runs at anamorphic 720p. as for gran turismo, that doesn’t really affect much as those are already optimized for PS3 hardware
although gt6 does drop in some more graphically intense areas although it never dips below the 30-40 FPS range
At least Unleashed can go as low 480p too. Idk, Gens and 06, don't have the them, but Gens is on the same engine as Unleashed so it might carry it over.
@@_memoryleak_Earlier games of the gen were made in a time before a full transition to flatscreens and support at least 480p. Whenever they did 4:3 too is a diferent story but the list of full SD support covers a good chunk of even late gen games.
Very obviously, the RaCF games fully support SD with even a slighly diferent UI arangement and more zoomed out camera to make up for 4:3 when in it. And FULLY native with performance improvements included, ACiT goes from 50-60fps to perfect 60 and near perfect 60 on the areas it runs at 40fps in HD. Crazy 50% boost.

Sonic 1 GBA was really bad to the point where a guy had to come in with a proof of concept homebrew port to show that it's possible to have game run smoothly and optimized. And the rest was "history" when 2017 came.
It's worth mentioning about lost world that the steam release has lower animal requirements that make it so you don't need to grind almost at all, and if mods are relevant then you can get the DLC from the Wii U on the steam version anyway with the DLC restore

For Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I wanna give a shout-out to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3/Xbox 360. The emulation itself is fine but the fact that you can play both games separately but not together is such a tease.
I also wanna mention the consoles from AtGames since technically they were an official way of playing the game. I remember I had one that had just Sonic & Knuckles and the sound quality was horrible.
It's still really nice how we have a lot of these modern ports in the first place. Sure some of them aren't the best, but it's really nice of Sega to preserve these games to some extent.

I genuinely love playing SA1 in the canonical unfun way, I play as sonic until I unlock Tails then return to Sonic, when Tails gets saved,then play Sonic until you meet Knuckles, then play Knuckles playthrough till you fight Sonic, then go unlock Amy with Sonic, go play Amy and then Unlock Big and rinse and repeat & again with Gamma and finish the story off Super obviously. Extremely convoluted but its funny seeing the scenes basically back to back

as someone who grew up with the Sonic and Knuckles collection, yeah it's probably fair to call it a major contender for the worst but it's a very servicable port and those midi songs (in both General FM and FM Synth) will forever be hella nostalgic to me and for a time i actually preferred them to the equivilent genesis versions (That was nostalgia talking but they aren't Terrible)
Also fun fact even back on our old windows XP machine it'd randomly boot at like, 1000% speed for some reason? And sometimes it had negative colors??

Interesting video! A couple of ports that I think are worth at least mentioning:
I've never played the Origins collection, but apparently Origins Sonic CD removes Sonic's voice, which for me is a big problem. Those little sound clips add so much to the game to me.
There's a DS Sonic collection that includes Sonic 3 which has slowdown, to me it felt pretty unpleasant to play. Certainly not as awful as it could be, but sounds like the port of Sonic 3 you mentioned is probably more fun...Although I think the DS collection uses emulation, so I guess it might not count as a full port
It's not a port it's actually emulation made by some guy who made his own genesis emulator for ds and sega made him producer of classic collection
Honestly, I don't even think SADX is bad on Gamecube. It does a lot of stuff wrong, but it's mostly graphical preferences. I have both the Dreamcast and the Gamecube versions, and they both see frequent play because DX has skipable cutscenes and an astronomically better chao garden that I don't need an entire VMU with no prior saves on it to play. Dreamcast still looks better though.
the gamecube version is definitely the best version of DX but it got worse with time. 60fps and the ability to skip cutscenes are good additions but with how many graphical effects are just broken i still prefer the DC version. the 2004 PC port with the dreamcast conversion is the best way to go though, best of both worlds.
@@autumn7 Its also worth noting that the Gamecube controller was leagues better for the game. I love my dreamcast, but its controllers left much to be desired.
@autumn7 It's kind of a mixed bag.
On one hand, better performance, cutscene skip, and improved water effects (some areas it just looks less choppy in motion, other areas have wholly updated water entirely and nicer character models.
But then there's the Dreamcast with better lighting, less bugs (mostly graphically, but some gameplay too,) and better character texturing to avoid the shiny look.
The textures between versions are pretty much up to opinion. I prefer the more colorful Dreamcast set overall, but a more realistic look like in DX isn't bad either by any means and some areas are helped a lot by it.
I'm still wondering what the fuck they did to the water on the modern ports to make it look like battery acid though.
Sonic Heroes on PS2 not only runs 480i 30 FPS (compared to 480p 60 FPS on GC and Xbox) but the audio quality is dramatically lower than the other versions. Plus it swaps the face buttons in menus where circle is to confirm and X is to go back. I have no idea how or why they did that
The swap is because in Japanese most playstation games use O to confirm and X to deny it's a cultural thing, so they just forgot to switch it in the international release
There's way worse things than that, some loops are straight up bug and can actually clip you out of the stage for no reason, notoriously the one in frog forest does this a lot in the PS2 version
In my opinion the origins version of Sonic 3 is the worst. The midis from the S&K Collection do have a certain charm to them, but the new origins tracks are just awful and all the audio is muffled.

Yes! Another Marble Zone fan! (Also I grew up with the gba Sonic 1. I think I gave up at labrynth zone 3.) (also also, the first time I ever beat sonic 2 was the Java flip phone version. It’s actually pretty fun to me.)
3:40 Fun fact, the Gems Collection version is actually based on the Windows 9X versions of the game, which is why it has all the issues you mentioned here. Don't ask me why they couldn't have emulated CD'93 instead, I wouldn't be able to know. Perhaps they were forced to rush the collection out the door, so porting the PC version of CD was easier. I believe the PC version also had an unlocked framerate compared to CD'93, which would explain why the special stages run too fast as well.
I gotta say, I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that the modern SADX ports don't have widescreen and the ugliest screen borders out there.
Like PC is clearly the worst, because at least it runs well on consoles (generally the performance has only gotten better with each release,) but the lack of widescreen was one of the biggest complaints back when it launched lol

Back when it came out it could very well been considered the worst PC port SEGA had ever put out, just so severely unstable (thing crashed CONSTANTLY), and even nowadays while it's way more stable it still crashes a lot without mods, and that's not mentioning the random pop-ups or how hard it is to close or issues with gamepads, it's really funny.
And that's not even going into the issues that Battle introduced that aren't just graphical issues in the cutscenes. The game controls a LOT better in the Dreamcast version due to the analog deadzone being increased in the Battle ports (with rail grinding and the mechs in particular just being completely butchered) and only recently (last week or so) did a mod for the PC port release that fixes it lol

I played Heroes as a kid on GameCube and loved it so much. Played it on PS2 a couple years ago and regretted it.
Unleashed was my favorite game on 360 for so long.
The actual worst version of Sonic Heroes is the PS3 port of the PS2 version. It was available on the PSN store for a limited time before being pulled.

I believe the only major system since Sega went third-party to not have a native version of Sonic 1 is the PS Vita. But since it's backwards compatible with PSP games you can still play Sonic 1 on it.
i did not realize adventure dx was so much worse than the other versions of that game, getting that on Xbox 360 was my first exposure to it and it's still one of my favorite Sonic games out of any of them, i kind of want to try finding some other versions of that game too go through eventually now
i remember that a buddy of mine was surprised at how much “better” 06 was on the 360 instead of the PS3. it was very interesting.
Having played Generations on 360 and PS3 I can also add that the PS3's load times were at least twice as long compared to 360.

2:53 Apparently, from what I've heard, it depends on screen resolution of the game IIRC. The wall is there for small ones...
3:12 The J2ME ports are separated into two parts: Dash and Crash. Dash starts at Emerald Hill and ends on Hill Top, while Crash is the rest. It's actually my first experience with Sonic 2, funnily enough.
Also, there's Sonic Advance. There's Gameloft's chopped-down port.
3:55 also, I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the Origins version of the cutscene on this basis; AI upscaling was only _part_ of the process to restore it per some people that were on the team, and if you wanna get technical there’s also the fact it eliminates the ghosting that was present in the Gems Collection version. Considering the masters to this cutscene don’t exist anymore iirc they did a really commendable job for what it’s worth
Believe it or not, the J2ME version was the first time I've ever played the original Sonic The Hedgehog. I think I played sonic advance on the gba before that though. Distinctly remember sitting in my moms huge bed playing on her phone while an equally large feeling TV was playing Hannah Montana. We were also eating chex mix which was crazy tasty to little old me. Damn dude this was supposed to be a video about shitty sonic ports.
The S3&K collection on PC is actually better than the genesis version with a few mods. If you restore the old music and use Sega PC reloaded to stabilize the refresh rate, you're left with a version that never dips below 60 fps and doesnt have emulation lag.
The worst version of heroes is actually playing the game on a backwards compatible Xbox 360. The frame rate is dreadful
I think you forgot that Sonic unleashed has a Wii/PS2 version of the game but if you want the worst way to play Unleashed, look forward to Sonic Unleashed mobile for the Old school flip phones!

Well if you want the answer to that, the worse version would obviously be PS2. SD Unleashed was clearly made for the Wii, and in comparison to the Wii, the PS2 version has:
- Extremely diminished models
- Extremely low texture quality
- Unstable 30fps
- 1 control option as opposed to the Wii's 3
- Texture warping in some areas
- No lighting
- Further compressed audio
- Only has 4:3
- Cutscenes are ridiculously low quality, with some of them needing to be dimmed from color and gamma issues
It's still a fine game, but Unlike the HD versions where the differences between 360/PS3 are somewhat minuscule, it is completely pointless to play the PS2 version unless you don't own a Wii.

But yeah no I only played the PS2 version because I had no access to a Wii at the time. Also because I wanted to own all the PS2 Sonic games. You can tell it's just a port made for giving last gen owners some way to play the new Sonic game, and oddly enough it was never released in Japan lol, only NA and PAL regions.
@@SegaMegadrive I was mainly addressing the controller types as although it isn't really positive or negative (Heck, the PS2 and Classic Controller have the same control scheme), it was still a difference between versions that I added to the list of differences.

I’ve always said this, but Nintendo has some secret formula to make all their first party games on the switch. Because you cannot convince me that any Sonic game, let alone Superstars can run as badly as it does while Mario games run flawlessly (90% of the time)
Mario Odysey at it's least intense has more going on than even Frontiers and it STILL rarely drops ANY frames. How the Switch can handle that borderline flawlessly but get killed by even Superstars is beyond me

Something I want to add about Sonic 2 J2ME: There's even worse versions you didn't show off. Additionally, there's a comparison video out there on TH-cam that features a version of Sonic 2 J2ME with TERRIBLE sound.
However, I can't reproduce this. I've tried about 7 different emulators, multiple ROM sites, and about 50 different versions of Sonic 2 J2ME and nothing sounds quite as terrible as the version shown in the video.
Also, for Sonic 3: If we included unofficial versions, early versions of the DGen emulator would take the crown from the Sonic & Knuckles Collection. They have really weird coloring and terrible sound.
What's funny about the 360 vs. PS3 comparison for Sonic Unleashed is that the pros and cons of each are essentially elevated when played on the current gen consoles.
The 360's more consistent frame rate was a pro, but a tough call since the game can never get over 30fps. But playing on the Series X, the frame rate is higher *and* more consistent than the PS3. Hell, even playing on emulator can't compete with the Series X, at least in my experience.
The PS3 had potential for 60fps but barely ever reaches it, and isn't worth it with all the bugs. The PS5 can't play the game normally, and it has to be streamed via a Playstation Now subscription. Good luck hitting 60fps when all the in-game lag is topped with internet lag. And I can't even imagine what a nightmare the Day Stages are with input lag.

I'd say the pc version of Heroes was the worst, has broken collision and is the only version of the game where I dodged the death box in the Egg Emperor boss fight.
Origins got 3 worse in my opinion

The Sonic Mania + on Netflix is actually pretty good, runs like butter on my phone, base game is the same thing like I cannot make this up they're THE same, only real issue I get are the special stages being hell to control on a touchscreen.
