This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the newly updated 2022 Porsche Macan and the newly updated 2022 BMW X3 luxury, performance compact SUVs.
There are three Macan models to choose from and they all get a bump in horsepower for 2022. The base model has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 7-speed automatic transmission, 261 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Macan S has 375 horsepower and the GTS 434 horsepower. Standard AWD and you have to put premium fuel in the Macan. There are four X3 models available, the base model has a 2 Litre turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8 speed automatic transmission, 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. There’s the M40i with a 3L inline-6, 382 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid with 288 horsepower and the X3 M with 503 horsepower. In the US, the PHEV is no longer available. The X3 base engine has both a RWD and AWD option. In Canada, standard AWD. The X3 requires premium fuel. The Macan gets some new exterior styling touches for 2022, which include a redesigned spoiler, side blades, rear fascia, diffuser, new sport mirrors and wheel designs. The Macan comes standard with 19” wheels up from 18” on the previous model with available 20” and 21” wheels. The base model has standard black brake calipers, the S and GTS models get red. There are new colour options this year including, Papaya Metallic on our test model which has new 21” GT design wheels in high gloss black and all season tires. The Macan comes with a spare tire. The X3 also gets a update for 2022 with a redesigned grille, new Adaptive LED headlights and LED taillights, the headlights have been lowered by about 10mm. It also gets updated front and rear bumpers, new wheel designs and tweaked exhaust tips. The X3 comes standard with a satin aluminum trim, 19” wheels with run-flat tires, 20” and 21” wheels are available. If you are looking for a sportier look, you can add the M Sport Package for M aerodynamic body styling, black roof rails, high gloss black exterior trim and M Sport blue brakes. The Macan gets quite a few changes to the interior for 2022, the biggest is to the centre console, gone are all the buttons. The Macan has joined the Cayenne and Panamera with touch sensitive controls creating a slick and modern design. This crossover also gets a new shifter and steering wheel in the refresh. Our test model has a black leather interior but there are plenty of other colour combos to choose from including Mojave beige, Bordeaux red and Pebble grey. There are also different stitching combinations like Papaya and Bordeaux Red to make it your own and unique. The Macan comes standard with a 10.9” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay, there is no Android Auto available, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 8-way power seats, a power tailgate and a 10-speaker audio system. The X3 interior gets a few tweaks for 2022, the centre console now features a high gloss black trim and new controls for the air conditioning system. BMW now offers an available dual 12.3” touchscreen and digital gauge display, standard is a 10.25” touchscreen. X3 models come with Sensatec leatherette seats except for the X3 M which gets Merino leather. However, you can upgrade to Vernasca or Merino leather on some of the other models. Standard features on the base model include, a heated steering wheel, power seats with driver seat memory, heated front sports seats and Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Dear both, I really appreciate specifics you cover and compare in all your reviews. Very informative and helps alot. I drive a new M40i which is loads on fun. But Macan in the list for next time around. Thanks again, keep up the great work 👍 One question from my end and when I was configuring my M40i, I noticed that the Canadian config let's me pick laser led headlights where as the US side doesn't. There were similar other stuff like seat color choices. For example, I can choose any color and add rear seat heating as well as ventilated front seats in CA build where as it forces Me to go for Black vernasca in the US. Any idea why so and would it be hassle to buy one from Canada and import to US in the future if it comes to it? Have you had any customers take such approach and has there been hassles that you know off outside of the import tax aspect ( like maintance support possibility in the US if made in canada etc)? Thanks again..
    regards, Arun

I'm 6 months into my ownership of a 2015 Macan Turbo and love this thing to pieces. People think the car is brand new its fast enough, handles amazing for what it is, and is the perfect small Suv size IMO. Don't think twice treat yourself to the Macan

  • @timcreelman3540

Re - maintenance. I have a 2015 Macan S bought new. I have just over 100,000 kms on it. Brakes are perfect. Feels like new. I have completed the scheduled maintenance for the brakes since new. Yes the full brake replacement (pads and rotors) will cost about $2000, but I still don't know when that will be needed. For comparison, I have had 10 new cars over many years prior to buying the Macan S, and have changed brakes pads and rotors twice by now. So you are essentially getting a better engineered product that lasts much longer, while paying more when you eventually need to replace and repair components on the car. Your choice. For me, I prefer driving a better product than paying less, but more frequent repairs and replacement.

Nice review. I got my first bmw as an X3 M40i back in 2020 and fell in love with the inline 6 and the power it can generate in Sports mode. As my love for beemer grew I now own an F90 aka 2022 M5 Comp. which took 8 months in the making and I couldn't be happier. I know performance wise Porsche edges out but bmw is big value for the bucks. Now thinking of trading in the M40i for a Macan S or GTS just for the experience

Had 3 Macan Turbo’s over 40k Miles and absolutely loved them. Looks, dynamics, quality. Got distracted by AMG Merc and now in MY21 X3M40i which is a very impressive all rounder. Super smooth and punchy in-line 6, good handling, excellent cruiser but can be hustled in sports mode. Macan GTS is probably 9/10 versus X3 at 8/10 but here in the UK, in a normal (non-Covid market), BMW dealers have more inventory to move and once you’ve fallen foul of the Porsche options list, the X3M40i should end up as much cheaper, lease or purchase.
If money is no object then the Macan GTS - no brainier. It feels special. If you’re budget constrained then X3M40i will not disappoint and you won’t feel short changed.

Thanks for the great review / comparison of these cars. I've owned four Porsches over the years and currently still have a Cayenne S and Cayman S. I am replacing the Cayenne S and initially just assumed I would get a Macan S, as I don't need as large a car with the lesser gas mileage at this time. A friend had me look at the BMW X3 M40i and I was impressed by the lesser price, better gas mileage, more standard safety features, B58 engine and more cargo capacity. Obviously BMW options are also better priced. But the real deal breaker is that I'm an Android / PC person and can't understand why all the newer Porsche vehicles, except for the Macan and Cayman are sans Android Auto - quite annoying. So I am planning on getter the M40i. I'll still have the Cayman S though.

I was waiting for my 2022 x3 M40i to arrive when you guys reviewed it month or so back. Finally got it in December and love every bit of it. Drive, tech and style - ( only complaint I ever had with bmw is seats are not the most comfortable). We lease our cars and have a 10 year relationship with our BMW dealership and we skipped the eye gouging prices at Porsche and Mercedes (one dealer offered me $900 a month with 5k down on a base GLC, I didn’t even answer and walked out and went right to my bmw guy)

      @No_cap_yo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rajeshbhattacharjee2989 honestly I don’t remember exact amount. It was a basic build not a 43 or 63. Didn’t have heads up display that my M40i does or 3 year maintenance (btw Benz second service is $750) I wanna say it was late 40s to early 50s thousand. My M40i is around 80k with options I selected (custom ordered) I sold my leased 2018 3 series instead of returning the lease and got 7k for that which I just put towards the down payment. I also sold my 2018 leased Benz but kept that money. And I am around $690 a month for my M40i before I added tire insurance because the run flats can really hit you if you have more than 2. But again we lease about 5 BMWs from our guy and known them for 10+ years so I would take my deal with a grain of salt. I tested another bmw dealer with same built and I was quite far in price.

    • @No_cap_yo

@@rajeshbhattacharjee2989 100% agree. Budget brand cars are straight up scamming people. I know someone who was looking into a Nissan Rouge (idk why) but she saw online price and at the dealership it was jacked up by 6 grand. I saw the breakdown and they added $1200 for tints the the dealership added and another $1500 for special coating on seat and exterior. No one can see the special coating and the guy couldn’t describe what it was, all he said was you can’t see it but it’s there. It’s a crazy market and 90% of the dealerships are scum bags.

The problem with the base Macan is that by the time you add the options (that most people want) - you're knocking on the door of the Macan S's price. Later when you go to sell it, your nicely optioned base model will be having to compete on price with the stripped down "former dealership loaner car" base Macan's. Better to just get the S from the very beginning I think.

For slightly improved driving dynamics, I wasn’t buying a macan for the purpose of driving a more prestigious brand. These small compact SUV vehicles don’t have a presence to them where the value of the brand amplifies the ownership experience. That’s just my opinion.

The Macan is much more expensive than the X3 and a softer ride is really welcome in the rest of the real world where the roads are really rough. Yesterday here in the West Island of Montreal on the Sources overpass heading north from highway 20 several people blew their tires while some ruined their suspension, wheels and tires all because of some very bad pot holes. And Montreal isn't the exception...You can drive almost anywhere in the east from Canada to the US and these are the road conditions. If you want better handling then get a car...this business of trying to make SUVs feel like cars is not practical. I drove an 330i as a courtesy car for a day while my bimmer was in for regularly scheduled (free) maintenance and that car has sharp steering and a tighter suspension however in the cold when the suspension feels stiffer you feel every bump in the road. For a 4 cylinder Turbo that car is very peppy. I know a lot of people like the 340i for that great engine but honestly with al the traffic and the current price of a liter of gas, I prefer a smooth drive over a "spirited" one. If you need that extra excitement then wait until the end of winter and get yourself a proper summer sports car. And you don't have to break the bank to get one either. There are a lot of both new and used choices out there. Another interesting point too; my dealership is in Laval, QC one of Canada's largest BMW dealership and I had to show a vaccine passport to be allowed in because the passport now works by square footage. The dealership has almost NO inventory and doesn't expect any until April! In the used car department in the showroom they were showcasing used BMW M's, mostly "competition" and now these 2 year old low mileage high performance vehicles sell for more than when they were new! Yup it's gotten that bad! Once again you guys, your review was excellent and the production quality top notch. BTW - Some BMW models get 4 years free maintenance.

BMW's don't age well. When they change their design every 4 years, present (and previous) models look instantly out of date when the new model arrives. The Macan has a more classic look that hasn't changed in 10 years. That's not to everybody's liking but it helps it age more gracefully and hold its value

What's up with the BMW suspension? They use front struts on the X340i while Mercedes uses multilink on the GLC 43 Coupe and Porsche uses double wishbone; even the SQ5 has multlink all around. I like the BMW engine and transmission more, the B58 is definitively best in class. I also like the that it looks like an SUV and not a coupe SUV and doesn't compromise as much on interior spacing. But the Porsche feels so much more solid in handling and interior quality. Really disappointed on how much cheaper it is than an X5 because it addresses my complaints but I don't want something that huge. If I wanted something that huge I wouldn't even consider the X5 over something far more practical like a MDX Type S
