John Watson I never really thought of Thomas as a jerk myself. I think he was just looking for something better then what he had. He had a heart. He cried when his blind solider friend killed himself and he stood up for Sybbie and George when the nanny mistreated them.

thomas' suicide attempt is missing. that was really shocking and emotional and I was sobbing all the way through. He too is a fan favourite, looking past his flaws.
I guess my favourite moment ever is when Tom forces Mary to realize that she's so bitter about her own life that she's destroying Edith's and everyone else's to avoid her own unhappiness. The climax is reached when he shouts her in anger: "You're a coward, Mary! Like all bullies you're a coward!".

Maynot one of the best but Anna's dance scene in a Christmas special episode. She learnt it from Rose. And everyone watches her while dancing. And Bates looks at her so lovingly. Absolutely loved that scene .
Where's Edith's long anticipated explosive brutally honest telling off at Mary during the final season I can say that I have waited for that powerful moment the whole series!!!!
It was not brutally honest because as usual Edith played the victim while ignoring her own bad behavior. Edith was just as guilty of being a bitch as Mary. The difference is that Mary actually owned up to it.
my personal favorite moment was when Mr.Bates came home on Christmas and surprises Anna. This might be just because I love Bates and Anna's relationship, but this scene always brings me smiles and joy, no matter how much I watch it.
While I adore the show, after Sybil and Matthew died the fizz sort of went out of it for me. the first 3 seasons are my favourite, particularly Season2 as it so heartwarming - it's about family, romance and hope.
Why were these two main characters Sybil and Matthew written out of the series? Was it simply a matter of money or did they find better roles and money elsewhere? I find the credits appearing alphabetically amusing. Was it because they didn't want hard feelings as to who are the most main characters and would the separation of the upper class vs the servant characters have anything to do with it. We Americans not being familiar with who the popular celebrities with the most impressive resumes in British cinema and TV haven't a clue as to who's who. All we know is about the American, Elizabeth McGovern still being rather beautiful in her advancing years. Wouldn't Kim Catrell of Sex and the City fame, who traced her British and Canadian ancestry back on a reality TV show, be a hoot in one of those prim and proper British characters?
Sir Eugene Courtney The actors had signed on for three seasons. When it was renewed for a fourth most actors signed up. They chose not to and to make films instead. Matthew proposed to Mary with the snow swirling about.
I think Robert's burst ulcer scene and Cora telling him "we won't let this be it" should have made the list. Wow! So powerful and moving! All that the two of them had gone through over many years of marriage - death of their youngest, death of their son-in-law, temptation to go all the way with unfaithfulness, etc. Their marriage bond was strong throughout and in spite of all the storms, heartaches, and even good times, and this scene really showed it. Edith calling Mary a bitch should've been here as well and Edith finally getting her happy ending (Wow! What an absolutely gorgeous dress!!!!! I think it was the most beautiful I have ever seen!!!) I also think any of the very special and toughing moments between Lady Mary and Carson should have been included.
It's a shame that none of Thomas' storylines made it onto this list! But that moment at the end of S1 when Edith realises Mary sabotaged her relationship and Mary just raises her glass, easily my favourite moment!
I think that when Edith and Mary have their cat fight in the final season. It was built up for so long and I thought that the writers were going to make me furious if I didn't get to see Edith finally tell Mary what she really is. Along with Thomas's suicide, and Isis's sad death. Who didn't shed tears for sweet Isis when she passed on?
I personally like Carson's proposal better. It gave me more feels than Matthew's. I think Robert's burst ulcer scene and Cora telling him "This is not it" should've made the list.
Carson was a huge prick. He wanted so bad to be with the ones upstairs. If I had to work for him and Mrs Hughes I'd beg on the street first. You couldnt say a damned thing or pause for a moment! what a life! Slaving in the cellar for the sticks up there asses above you!
best moment for me was when Anna’s water broke and Mary started helping her undress and Anna told her it wasn’t right and Mary said “what does that matter now?” it was just perfect.
The Kemal Pamuk scene was one of the greatest dark comedy moments in an English Drama EVER! Froggat, Dockery and McGovern deserved an award for just that few minutes of amazing acting alone! I loved watching Anna in the background trying not to look at the mother and daughter having an exchange and the threat of being "Ruined and notorious!" 😂
Dan Stevens is so gorgeous. Frankly Matthew and Mary's love line was my favorite in the show. It distantly reminded me of the Pride & Prejudice line with Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. I was very disappointed when Matthew was killed off, which they had to do, because Dan Stevens decided to leave the show, sadly.
This show died when Mathew did. And then the horrible rape subplot and how Thomas was never given proper attention. Seriously not one single Thomas scene in the list? When the show brushed off Thomas suicide attempt... it just ended in a sour note. But, those first seasons and the Great War plot was some of the best television ever had.
I agree, I´m surprised they´ve mentioned the issue about accidental abortion, rape and death but not even one hint about Thomas, who´s one of the most suffered characters. I´d wish they had mention the suicide attempt or the fight with Jimmy after kissing him (or when they have to say goodbye and he cries). I feel a little dissapointed they´ve made a honourable mention of Sybil´s dress but not about Thomas. It´s kind of ridicolous. At least I would have changed it for Lavinia´s death, if they don´t want to mention Thomas ._. It was a good list but that bothered me.
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! The show killed the only characters who I truly supported and then they never granted Thomas the attention and happy ending he deserves
No it did not .. and what's the big deal with the rape subplot.. you think that shit doesn't happen in real life? Esp back then? It was GENIUS .. it was painful, raw, real .. it's supposed to anger you and make you feel helpless, make you sympathise and realise what the person who got raped goes trough. Jesus you people expect every TV show to be some bullshit fairy tale where every little detail is perfect and everyone gets a happy ending etc. It's not.. and if you hadn't figured that out by the time Sybil died, you should have just watched some other cheesy ass show.
I don't think anyone's claiming that television should never tackle the topic of rape. There are better and worse ways of handling it, though, and Downton's handling of Anna was quite exploitative. The character became a punching bag, hit by one misfortune after another. There is this tradition in TV and movies that suffering and trauma have to be seen to be believed, which is not a great way to process these things, actually, and also has negative ramifications for real-life cases (where people are hesitant to believe the seriousness of the trauma if it seems like the victim isn't shaken enough, doesn't react in a certain way etc.) What Downton did is skirting way too close to what's been termed "narrative sadism."
Missing moments: 1) Bertie shows up at the restaurant waiting for Edith and they patch things up 2) Lord Grantham's ulcer 3) The fire in Edith's room 4) Thomas's suicide attempt 5) Mary and Edith's fight where she called her a bitch 6) Edith receiving the news that she was pregnant 7) The Drew's try to kidnap Marigold 8) The guy who said he was Patrick
I kinda wished Lady edith's second wedding (especially her comming of the staircase and robert's reaction to it) should be on it. I mean in season 1 she was a jelous bitter woman who was there least favorite daughter and prob would become a old maid. But by then end she was the strongest, most modern living Crawley, made Robert so proud (prob prouder then he is on Mary) and not to forget that she got married and outranked them all
There are so many amazing scenes, I wouldn't attempt to rank them . . . but I think Anna and Bates scenes, several of them, should be at the top of the list. I mean, really, wasn't that relationship the center of the whole storm? And by the way, I found Edith more attractive than Mary. What about some of the hot exchanges between them? Some of them were devastating!
apologies for forgeting the name of the pig farmer who adopted marigold (edith's daughter), but the scene where Edith comes to their farm and takes her away from his wife. the sadness and emotion in that scene get's me every time.
In the UK it wasn't so much Mathews dying that caused the outcry, but the outcry was that it happened on the Christmas Day Special, right at the end of the show. In Britian we like our Christmas Day viewing to be 'feel-good.' Everything else was turning that way, the new hier, servants getting differences sorted out etc . Mathew's sudden death spoilt Christmas day for many viewers after such a positive build up!! The screenwriter actually had to defend his decision to kill Matthew on that day, in a local paper! I noticed on the box sets, they have separated this out from the Christmas hunt......
For me, the whole series is one big favorite moment! I love all the characters so much, I cried with them, I laughed, I was afraid. However, John and Anna Bates are the best couple I've ever seen! I love them❤️😪🥺
Mary and Matthew’s proposal may not be my absolute favorite moment on the show…although it might. But it is the most visually beautiful. The snow, their dark clothes contrasting the white snow, it’s romantic, it has such a soft and lovely look and feel to it that most other scenes in the show didn’t. Plus Matthew and Mary FINALLY getting together was awesome!
My favourite scene that I watch again and again is Bates’ and Anna’s reconciliation after he finds out through Mrs Hughes what really happened. When he takes her face in his (GIGANTIC
I was floored when at that dinner Lord Grantham's ulcer burst and he upchucked blood everywhere....and the best was when he said "if this is the end, know that I have loved you very much" (not exact quote but something like that)...that really stood out to me also.
You forgot so many great moments, like when Sybil accepts to elope with Branson, Mary and Matthew's wedding, Branson and Matthew's friendship, (anything about Branson), Rose's wedding, Edith's actual wedding, Edith calling Mary a b*tch, anything about Thomas, seriously, so many moments!
It says a lot that the first three seasons feature far more on this list than the last three. Seasons 4, 5 and 6 had some great moments but they didn't live up to the same standard. That said, some moments that could have been included are: 1. Bertie and Edith's fall out, reconciliation and marriage 2. Mary's haircut 3. The car racing scene 4. Rose's wedding that nearly didn't happen, thanks to her mother 5. Lord Sinderby's mistress and illegitimate son turning up in front of Lord Sinderby's family 6. Thomas's attempted suicide and subsequent recovery
There are honestly too many good moments to cut it down to just 10. There are many moments that others have brought up which deserved a mention. I mean, the Dowager Countess' one-liners alone deserve a mention! I came to Downton Abbey late. I streamed it through my Amazon Prime membership a few years behind the broadcast. I didn't read anything about the series. I wanted to watch it completely fresh. Like many others, the death of Sybil was horrifying. That was just gut-wrenching! I really liked her character. But the moment I will never forget is Matthew driving down that country road so happy after his son's birth, and the camera cutting away to show that oncoming truck. I just started crying out, "No, no, no!" I knew what was coming. And when it showed him bleeding out, I just bawled and bawled and bawled. I don't think I've ever been that devastated by a character's death in my life! I LOVED Matthew! He was such a great character! I then went and read articles about how fans had reacted to that event, and was glad to read that I was certainly not alone in my response. I love the show as a whole, but it just wasn't the same after he was gone. Seasons 1-3 will always be my favorite due to Matthew's presence. And Mary was so much more likable when she was with Matthew. He brought out the best in her. None of the love interests that followed could hold a candle to Matthew! And I have to agree that all the bad situations that kept hitting Mr. Bates and Anna just got to the point of being torture for torture's sake. Seriously, cut them some slack! And Anna's rape can't just be looked at as an isolated incident. The rape of female characters has become a way-too-frequently-used plot device for mostly-male TV writers. It's a major problem. It's a way to knock female characters down when the male writers think they've become a) too happy, b) too independent, c) too big for their britches. In this instance is was just gratuitous torture for Downton Abbey's hard luck cases.
Without a doubt, Matthew's proposal in the snow is my favorite. It never denies me all the feels, even now as I watched it for the umpteenth time. Someone pass the tissue box, please!!
I know this is an old post. HOWEVER, I feel compelled to say I am obsessed with DA and am glad to revisit some of the best scenes. Wouldn’t it be a great thing to do is meet at Highclere Castle AKA Downton Abbey and actually dress the part and reenact our favorite scenes. Maybe it’s just me …. lol 😅😅
Oh, come on. So much you overlooked! Edith's wedding to Lord Hexham shouldn't be out of this list. Matthew getting up for the first time and walking after his injury was epic. That amazing scene when Ethel watches her boy go away is simply perfect, even though it's so perfectly sad. Thomas, in a way, IS Downton Abbey and didn't get mentioned (in my mind, if there was a narrator in this story, Thomas would be one option and Branson would be the other). But even the small moments in this show were out of this world. I mean, Mary coming down the stairs in her wedding dress while her two fathers watch her. Gwen getting a job and jumping around with Sybil and Branson on the episode with the cricket match. Lady Violet announcing the best bloom of the season. Isobel and Lord Merton getting married. Mr. Molesley becoming a teacher. Thomas saving little Sybil from that monster of a nanny and playing with master George. Lady Sybil's cake. Branson dancing with Lady Violet. Lord Grantham taking Isis to his bed and falling in love with his new puppy. Mr. Bates taking a tray to Anna because she's sick. The memorial for Mrs. Patmore's nephew. Lady Violet's memories from her trip to Russia. Rose dancing with the Prince of Wales on her ball and getting her father in law's admiration. I could be here for days.
My favorite scene is when Mr. Crawely runs to stops the car to bring Mr. Bates back on staff when he realizes his mistake. How can this scene be missed?!
Ik this was before it happened but season six has some of my favorite moments mostly because its full of happy endings for everyone (Eg: Edith and Bertie's wedding, Anna and Bate's baby, etc.)
The Matthew and Mary proposal was the _best_ ! It was Christmas Night and we got our Christmas wish! What a wonderful way to top off the merriment at the end of a difficult year. I still get chills remembering how happy I was!
Favourite moment was definitely when Violet and Isobel push their way into Lord Merton's house, put that little shit Larry and his wife into their places, and declare that Merton will come back with Isobel and marry her :D
lmao. Mary and Matthews proposal scene is one of the most iconic scenes in television. Edith's wedding is nothing compared to it. No one cares about Edith
I personally loved the scene where Thomas was playing with George. It showed a complete different side of the usually mean character. :)
John Watson I never really thought of Thomas as a jerk myself. I think he was just looking for something better then what he had. He had a heart. He cried when his blind solider friend killed himself and he stood up for Sybbie and George when the nanny mistreated them.
He was an enigma but at least a dimensional character Mary and the others as flat as cardboard
Thomas' emotional distress at the death of Lady Sybil showed his humanity.
Thomas is one of the most compelling characters.
Cora's firing the nanny for calling Sybbie a "cross-breed" should have been on the list!

There is this tradition in TV and movies that suffering and trauma have to be seen to be believed, which is not a great way to process these things, actually, and also has negative ramifications for real-life cases (where people are hesitant to believe the seriousness of the trauma if it seems like the victim isn't shaken enough, doesn't react in a certain way etc.) What Downton did is skirting way too close to what's been termed "narrative sadism."
i agree the show was never quite the same after Matthew left. Him and Mary had the best scenes.
Missing moments:
1) Bertie shows up at the restaurant waiting for Edith and they patch things up
2) Lord Grantham's ulcer
3) The fire in Edith's room
4) Thomas's suicide attempt
5) Mary and Edith's fight where she called her a bitch
6) Edith receiving the news that she was pregnant
7) The Drew's try to kidnap Marigold
8) The guy who said he was Patrick
I love them❤️😪🥺
best???????? really....rape is BEST?!?!?!??!?!??! change the tittle pleaseeee.... more like "memorable" moments or something like that
Ugh.... 😒
"shookest moments"
Honestly!!!!!
Seriously. That scene shook me so much, I didn't even realize I was full on sobbing and angry.
sofiabyn Ik! And they called Mary and Pamuk’s night passionate 🤢🤮
Another one is definitely needed. You guys missed an awful lot of beautiful moving Thomas moments.
+++++++++++++++++++++😭😭😭😭😭😭🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love the one with Sybills new dress, where everyone in the room is looking at her and then Tom from outside the window is like: 👀
Yes, thank you msmojo. I love Downton Abbey.
Thank you for making this list. Downton abbey is the best show ever.
The chair scene with Matthew and the Dowager !! Unforgettably hilarious !
why is this not on your regular channel. are you saying downton Abbey is a girls show. hey men enjoy downton Abbey to you know
agreed!
Agreed!
Blobulous I thought it was a bit odd as well
Absolutely, I know more men than women who watch it in fact
Cora sacking nanny west was a great one. Mama bear comes out play and it ain't pretty.
Perhaps the best casting in media history. I'm watching the whole series again!
Anna´s and Mr Bates´s story was so full of sadness.
Lady Sybil was my favorite! She seemed so kind and sweet!
I was floored when at that dinner Lord Grantham's ulcer burst and he upchucked blood everywhere....and the best was when he said "if this is the end, know that I have loved you very much" (not exact quote but something like that)...that really stood out to me also.
Matthew joining Mary in the duet was such an unintentional tribute to The sound of music 🤍
Any Sybil and Tom moments, and Anna and Bates' marriage were my favorites. And any Dowager scenes. ❤❤❤❤
I miss downton abbey so much ♡ ♡ ♡
They are making a film.. whoopee :D
+Sally Ann Loveday Yes!!! :)
The lack of Thomas scenes disappoints me
I love the show I cried at the very last episode I missed it it's one of my favorite shows
It says a lot that the first three seasons feature far more on this list than the last three. Seasons 4, 5 and 6 had some great moments but they didn't live up to the same standard. That said, some moments that could have been included are:
1. Bertie and Edith's fall out, reconciliation and marriage
2. Mary's haircut
3. The car racing scene
4. Rose's wedding that nearly didn't happen, thanks to her mother
5. Lord Sinderby's mistress and illegitimate son turning up in front of Lord Sinderby's family
Amber Pippin the more I read these comments I realized how many MORE scenes I had forgotten!
Amber Pippin you just summed up my exact feelings for this show. I'm amazed how someone was feeling the same strong feelings 🤗🤗
The death of Sybille was so heart breaking. It's definitly the best moment of the show!
You need to make another list, there are sooo many more memorable, shocking and great moments
I miss this show
You can't restrict it to just 10… there are so many great moments in Downton!
Top 10 dowager countess moments!!!
I will never get over Lady Sybil's death, it's too much!!!!!
One of my favorites. I LOVED this show.
My favourite always has to do with Violet's wit love her
Without a doubt, Matthew's proposal in the snow is my favorite. It never denies me all the feels, even now as I watched it for the umpteenth time. Someone pass the tissue box, please!!
I am appalled that Thomas Barrow was not in this video. Some people are not true fans of Downton Abbey.
Oceanb Lewis lol nobody cares about his selfish ass
When Sybil's death was number 2, I thought Robert's ulcer bursting would be number one. Definitely one of the more memorable moments.
Maybe it’s just me …. lol 😅😅
This show is so freaking good man.
The show managed to give us comedy, tragedy, melodrama, bathos. roatitic sentimentality.--all acted with great skill.
How right you are!❤❤
PLease do a top 10 best Dowager Countess moments, she is one of the best characteres in this show
My favorite scene is when Mr. Crawely runs to stops the car to bring Mr. Bates back on staff when he realizes his mistake. How can this scene be missed?!
Когда это было?😳
Excellent show! So sad it's over!
Ik this was before it happened but season six has some of my favorite moments mostly because its full of happy endings for everyone (Eg: Edith and Bertie's wedding, Anna and Bate's baby, etc.)
Where is Lord Grantham's burst ulcer scene?! So much mysterious buildup to such an explosive and unexpected scene.
The Matthew and Mary proposal was the _best_ ! It was Christmas Night and we got our Christmas wish! What a wonderful way to top off the merriment at the end of a difficult year. I still get chills remembering how happy I was!
My favourite scene is when Sybil arrives after her and Tom flee Ireland and they reunite in the hallway
OMG! when Matthew died i mourned him for like a week... i miss this show :(
Love Downton Abbey, is one of my favorities series
Thank you MsMojo, love the show xx
Fuck , you made me cry again.
my favourite tv series.......
Favourite moment was definitely when Violet and Isobel push their way into Lord Merton's house, put that little shit Larry and his wife into their places, and declare that Merton will come back with Isobel and marry her :D
Omg! Thank you for posting this!
Wrong - #1 is Lady Edith's wedding to Marquess of Hexham - Bertie
Thank you!! Can't believe this moment was overlooked. It was sooooo long in coming, made it all the more satisfying.
lmao. Mary and Matthews proposal scene is one of the most iconic scenes in television. Edith's wedding is nothing compared to it. No one cares about Edith
I do care for Edith. I liked her much more than liked Mary.
lol Edith was so whiny and annoying. Mary was far more complex and interesting. And also way hotter
In all you said above we agree to disagree. I could have slapped Mary in every single episode.
Great show.
The farewell among Mylord and Mr. Clarkson's last episode. Awesome!
