- A clip from the 2005 National Spelling Bee in which contestant Katie Seymour asks for just a bit too much information from the judges.
NOTE: For some reason, this video started being spotlighted by TH-cam's algorithm as of January 2021, and suddenly started getting literally millions of hits after 13 years of fairly light traffic. I temporarily disabled comments on it for the sake of my own sanity, but now that traffic has significantly calmed down, I'm reenabling them.

as a native arabic speaker, im baffled by the concept of spelling bees, spelling in english is so messy and irregular that you're handed a trophy if you get them right
It is not irregular.. It has a certain flow that only the gifted can master
Yes, as long as you also memorize every word with an exception to the rules.
Which is about 50%
I've consistently won a number of spelling bees, the thing is most words have origin language and spelling bees are not necessarily, "did you memorize the spelling?" but actually, more of, "can you work out the logical spelling.. (although some words are garbage lets be honest.) Based on the definition and theoretical origin of the word."

Hey u ok?
I’m asking for Hannah :)
@@upstate5101 Maybe you should get a real job instead.
I don't think you know what you're talking about. Letters do not necessarily correspond to their pronunciation, and that's what makes the spelling bee difficult.
Merriam-Webster says the pronunciation of "incunabula" is in-kyə-ˈna-byə-lə. Notice the schwa: this sound can be produced by numerous combinations of letters in the English language, and when properly pronounced those combinations cannot be distinguished by sound alone. Suggesting that the judge place unnatural emphasis to suggest how the word is spelled defeats the purpose of the spelling bee. If the judge were to do that they would in fact be in error.
