The most impressive thing about Firas isn't the depth of his knowledge regarding philosophy, it's how clearly and concisely he's able to transmit those ideas to a layman. It's not hard to see why he's one of the great sports coaches of recent times.
What Firas is talking about is about the philosophy of science (eg Hume). He is saying that the current scientific "facts" hinge on the next big scientific discovery; so in the grand scheme of things, we do not really know anything.

The same happens to me. It’s incredible how our perspective changes a lot when we try to look at reality based on this way of thinking and observing reality. Your comment raised a contradiction in terms: Philosophy isn't anything to do with facts, It's about the discussion of ideas. Therefore, the chap in this interview isn't necessarily arguing that Science doesn't contain facts, he is arguing for the idea that there are alternatives to the Scientific method. I personally disagree with his argument completely though, and his assertion that Science can never develop beyond hypothesis is wrong. Scientific theory's such as evolution, quantum theory, gravity and electromagnetism are as good as Scientific fact. On the subject of gravity he's also confusing the knowledge that gravity is a thing with the as yet learning of why gravity exists. I.e: What is gravity exerting a force onto in Space? That question is still to be answered with the tools of Science. This guy basically needs to go back to school....

Firas is correct. Science is always evolving, as is our search for empirical truth. What we believe to be true today, may be disproven tomorrow. Also, the things we cannot prove today, may be proven tomorrow.
Nothing he said here was impressive or profound, most of it is just his own misunderstanding of semantics. He just hears or thinks of something and runs with it, until someone with the ability to think critically comes along and its all "Yes that's a very good argument"...

The way Firas explained himself was spot on. Sometimes Joe can be very stubborn with his way if thinking, as we all can be, but to the point of frustrating.
It's because Joes idea of wuu and Firas idea of wuu are different. Firas said there is alot of wuu in science. Firas went on explaining why. Mean while Joe is like what? How is that wuu where is the wuu. And Firas kept going. They engaged in a huge conversation because of a lack of agreement on what wuu is.

So while the laws of gravity hold true now, if something came along in the future that proved gravity otherwise to not be true, science allows for the correction of that law & or theory. That is what makes science amazing... nothing is ever 100% certain in science as science will always remain open to change and new laws/theories :-)
Zahabi is simply pointing out the flaw in inductive reasoning. This doesn't mean science is wrong, but rather that it's truth statements are more limited than we might of thought them to be.

I agree 100% I believe it was said, that if you cant explain something to a person in a way they can understand, then you yourself dont really understand. Or something to that effect.
There's a saying: If you have full control of an idea, you should be able to explain it in very few words, so that anyone who's not aware at all of the concept would understand it.
Dude this is by far my favorite episode ever. I have come to most of these conclusions on my own but I can never seem to find adequate words to explain to people. Mostly when I talk metaphysics I just get frustrated and give who ever my mantra... " I am you you are me we are all that is has been and ever will be. To sum up this amazing Firas Zahabi's exposition. Knowledge can not be achieved through senses and the interpretation of the ego, the only way to reach knowledge is through complete consciousness. And the only way to have complete consciousness is to get rid of the ego (or putting it in his own words: "chop everything that might be imaginary, inferred, logical, empirical... to take off all your paradigms"). This is the transcendent experience of the one thing (or enlightenment), and that's why he says that it takes a very brave human being to do that, because few men are willing to get rid of their ego. And this is why I agree there is a point where religion is true and science is faith.

Refraction is bending of light. The light bends in water due to change in medium and we see a reflection of it. We observe light because of reflection. That is why we can't see in a dark room.

Not gonna lie, I started off defensive when he started 'attacking' science, but the man makes some great points.
He didn’t really attack science at all. Everything he said is the scientific method and accepted in science or debatable through and within science until you start talking about what is beyond reality that moulds it.

Your comment raised a contradiction in terms: Philosophy isn't anything to do with facts, It's about the discussion of ideas. Therefore, the chap in this interview isn't necessarily arguing that Science doesn't contain facts, he is arguing for the idea that there are alternatives to the Scientific method. I personally disagree with his argument completely though, and his assertion that Science can never develop beyond hypothesis is wrong. Scientific theory's such as evolution, quantum theory, gravity and electromagnetism are as good as Scientific fact.
On the subject of gravity he's also confusing the knowledge that gravity is a thing with the as yet learning of why gravity exists. I.e: What is gravity exerting a force onto in Space? That question is still to be answered with the tools of Science. This guy basically needs to go back to school....

I could understand your point if he was arguing mostly for the idea that Science was fundamentally flawed and then added a few arguments for why it wasn't, except he didn't, Which makes me think he had a bias towards his hypothesis.
Again like Joe alluded to, Science is the process of refining and changing results based on the available evidence, even if that evidence doesn't fit your preferred narrative; unlike this guy in the podcast who wants the evidence to fit his narrative.
Firas is correct. Science is always evolving, as is our search for empirical truth. What we believe to be true today, may be disproven tomorrow. Also, the things we cannot prove today, may be proven tomorrow.

The way Firas explained himself was spot on. Sometimes Joe can be very stubborn with his way if thinking, as we all can be, but to the point of frustrating.
It's because Joes idea of wuu and Firas idea of wuu are different. Firas said there is alot of wuu in science. Firas went on explaining why. Mean while Joe is like what? How is that wuu where is the wuu. And Firas kept going. They engaged in a huge conversation because of a lack of agreement on what wuu is.
If joe didn't press him and just agreed we would not have gotten such an in depth response.

@aspectrum The great thing about science is the fact that science is always open to correction. So while the laws of gravity hold true now, if something came along in the future that proved gravity otherwise to not be true, science allows for the correction of that law & or theory. That is what makes science amazing... nothing is ever 100% certain in science as science will always remain open to change and new laws/theories :-)
Zahabi is simply pointing out the flaw in inductive reasoning. This doesn't mean science is wrong, but rather that it's truth statements are more limited than we might of thought them to be.
