    Awesome. You guys are correct, strategy is key, we (designers) should all incorporate it into our design process. I see strategy analogous to the foundation of a physical building upon which the brand is then built. Strategy is like the bridge that closes the gap between design and business. To me it's the basic starting point for properly defining, identifying, and solving "business" challenges.Without strategy we're designing in the dark, in my humble opinion. Chris Do said it well, 'strategy elevates designers'. (And it's OK ***** , I get all touchy-feely too). Rocio Villalobos , I appreciate you sharing your insights. Thx!

    Thanks for making these videos gentleman! I am an Interior Designer who specializes in branded Foodservice + Hospitality Interiors and I am translating the information you are providing through these videos into my sales processes and overall business practices and positioning. I have a lot of work to do to get my business where I want it to be, but this information is really helping me get clarity. My design process is very strategic, though I didn't realize it until listening to you talk about this concept. Now I know how to communicate this to my clients better and help them understand that I am doing a lot more than making their spaces look amazing.

      I was doing my own research on branding and getting different perspectives, I saw your little yellow thumbnail on the recommended videos on the right side of the screen and BAM! insta-love. haha
      I'd like to say that I REALLY liked this episode BECAUSE of the different personality types and different perspectives under the same issue. I think Jose and Chris are a perfect combo because them two alone provide that in every episode. So thanks for that. I like hearing from all perspectives because it opens up mine.

    I really enjoy your videos. Your videos are packed full of helpful information. The insight you gave about designers not understanding the difference between the brief/objective and their design is so true. I was in a graphic design 300 level class where we worked in teams to create a design package to meet the needs of specific clients. When I pointed out that something the teammates wanted to do didn't fit with what the client had asked for they told me "The client isn't a designer, they don't know what they need. That's our job." It kind of rubbed me wrong but I let the majority lead in the group. At the final presentation our instructor hammered us for not meeting the clients needs and said exactly some of the points I had made. It didn't make me feel better because we had still not done well on the project but I did learn to speak up more. A couple semesters later I started working to add a entrepreneurship minor to my degree and found out I would have been a great fit for that program. I remember telling my entrepreneurship instructors that I though taking entrepreneurship classes would be really helpful for all graphic designers. They said it was actually pretty rare because the art personality didn't tend to be comfortable in the business programs. This was back in 2010 and 2011. I will add that was a non-traditional college student, having returned to college in my late 30s after my children entered high school. I was an anomaly in my classes at that time. The thing about this video that is great is that you help me to realize that not only is it ok that I approach design from a strategic place to get my creative energy flowing but it might even be an asset. Thank you for doing these video and sharing them for free.

      Kathleen, here's a quote from Dr. Marjorie Kalter "It is no longer sufficient for a campaign to be a big idea that generates awareness. To be successful, it has to be on strategy, trend positively with its target audience, and meet the projected metrics. When the design school approach isn't matched by keen attention to the business goals, the campaign is at risk. The business may also be at risk."

      But seriously just include Strategy/Discovery as part of your proposal and explain why it's neat. If they have issues with paying it they will tell you, believe me.

    Thanks for another great video! I would love to see a lean startup approach in the process, where and how the hypothesis, mvp, prototype and different types of quick & dirty testing would come in.
    Would also love to see methods how to create more fact based user personas - I discovered my clients often don't really know their customers. Often they ask, if they should describe their ideal customers or who they think they are.

    It's sad that not enough people take strategy seriously. I was looking to hear Chris talk about _The Art of War_ by Sun Tzu, as he strikes me as the type of man who would read that book.
    I remember not knowing what the difference between strategy and tactics are. After looking up the etymology for both words I found that:
    *Strategy literally means, 'to lead'*
    *Tactics literally means, 'arrangement'*
    Therefore strategizing leads to victory while the arrangement of a business helps it to be prepared for the unexpected.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve read it. But a long time ago.

    • @jeremiahcastro9700

      *The Futur* As I've been watching you talk about and illustrate the impact that design and logos have on businesses, I was reminded of a line in _The Art of War_ :
      *"Flags and banners unite the eyes of the army..."*
      This is true even today when logo designs unite the eyes of the public to a business.
      Your videos have brought me one step closer to selling strategy and tactics.

    • @jeremiahcastro9700
      @jeremiahcastro9700 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      *The Futur* Since you value strategy so much, I'd like to recommend a precious and rare writing from one of the students of Sun Tzu:
      _The Way of the General_
      -Zhuge Liang
      kongming.net/novel/writings/wotg/2.php
      In ancient times he was known as the Sleeping Dragon among the public but, his close circle knew him as Kongming. He grew up during the three kingdoms era in China.

    • @thefutur

      ask them how they will measure success. what are the KPIs? then ask, how much they want to invest towards hitting that goal and then negotiate based on risk factor.

    Mr. Exrovert is such a Distraction @3:06 He thinks that he deserves to take a fancy water break while the other guy gets schooled by the lady; assuming that he simply-clearly 'get it'. His character reflects the image of a Wise Guy. Notice how he rudely reached for the water/wine-shape bottle & pops the top, causing a burst of 'pop & pouring' noise into the microphone while she was talking, trying to get her point across. Then he jumps ahead @ 5:26 No disrespect to anyone, I just had to point that out. But still, this is an awesome video, thanks for sharing!
