Unlock your spine - the Feldenkrais Way!

  • This is one of my absolute favorite Feldenkrais Lessons. Its great if you are a golfer or racket sports player as it can teach you how to access the power of your thoracic spine. Its equally good if you spend a lot of time sitting or at a desk or a laptop. The original lesson was called 'Classic Twist on the Side with an Advanced Opening'. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Important medical information which you should read before undertaking the lesson:
Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. These lessons are not intended to diagnose any medical condition or to replace your healthcare professional. Consult with your healthcare professional to design an appropriate exercise prescription. If you experience any pain or difficulty with these exercises, stop and consult your healthcare provider. If you experience any symptoms of weakness, unsteadiness, light-headedness or dizziness, chest pain or pressure, nausea, or shortness of breath. Mild soreness after exercise may be experienced after beginning a new exercise. Contact your physician if the soreness does not improve after 2-3 days.

Every morning before I start a new lesson, I think what kind of new challenging movements I have. My left side of the body was heavy, as I try your lesson every day, little by little, it is lighter with my left side. I thank you for your fantastic directions. I will keep practicing. have a nice day, Stewart.

@@stewarthamblin First off, thank you for the content, it's amazing.
I was thinking the same while doing the movements, that since my health took a massive hit since december 2019 I too was in the idea that FAST, HARD.. intensive was the way to try to fix years of bad posture and misadvice, misguidance and last if not least the fact that even though medical laws indicate the obligation for prophylactic care by doctors it's not done at all. And this leads to chronic ilness when people say they can't do such exercises anymore because they simply can't physically(cardio, runnning and any other intensive exercise.. etc)
If it hadn't been for the chance meeting with Tai Chi and QiGong last year (2020) at the end of the summer, I had probably would be in even worse shape than now, because to be honest, somehow Tai Chi has the same ideas and concepts but done differently.
Now I'll be able to do all 3 of of them.
I'm now live in Romania although I lived 10+ years in Belgium.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anyone here in the country practicing Feldenkrais as a teacher/therapist which is rather unfortunate since I know direct feedback is immensely helpful.
So I'm trying things online with.. great success I'd say.
How's the weather in the UK? How is life with COVID going on there?
      Cheers!:)

I loved this lesson Stewart, but I ended up with a sore lower back. By bed time I felt like I'd been on the rack all day - sore and stretched. Such a shame because I loved doing the class, but I think the movements irritated my sacroiliac.

Hi Georgia, I am sorry to hear that you have been in pain. Its happened to me in the past with certain lessons. When that happens I back off and then try to discover what it is that I may have been doing that was perhaps provoking the issue. I go slowler and try a smaller range of movement. Please don't move into pain though and I hope you feel better soon.

i enjoyed the lesson but i have such tight adductors that i cannot seem to convince to let go....in the final stages i could not do the movements cos my adductors started to protest too vehemently.. i am looking for a lesson that will dissuade my adductors from wanting to do every single task i undertake. Just lying with folded knees became too painful. They don't know how to relax. Reading feldenkrais again, i realise it is my brain that needs retraining. Any advice would be greatly welcome... do you have another video/exercise you recommend? i thought this would be for the whole spine.. hips etc. but it was really upper spine, wasn't it?
