- Welcome back to our cottage garden. Its been a few weeks since I showed you around properly, so grab a cup of tea and come have a look at what we are growing here while Summer is drawing to a close. It's the tidying up stage of the year, so there's a bit of mess around but it's nice to have something to work on. I've added a few ornamental plants this month so I will show you those too. This was so wonderful to watch!! Your garden looks so beautiful even after surviving the heatwave. I was never a big duck fan before but yours are so adorable that I am now thinking of having them when I have a garden of my own.

We had great success in our last garden (also in Somerset) with Hugelkultur beds, and I highly recommend the method, both for cheapness (yes!) and for the quality of the results. A mixed planting of flowers, fruit and vegetables worked excellently. We had a monster perennial kale in there, but I did plant it after the Hugel was finished, so I can't comment on the business of working around existing perennials in a bed. I reckon 50cm on top of an asparagus crown might be a bit much; maybe dig it up in as huge a lump of soil as you can manage to extract (the roots go far out) and put it in a bucket while you construct your Hugel? Fantastic roses, you are inspiring me to acquire more David Austin bare-roots this Autumn :)
P.S. Hugel rhymes with bugle, like Jekyll rhymes with treacle....

My sweet peas looks just like yours and it's on the same spot for 3 or 4 years now. I don't collect the seeds, I let it spread by itself.

It’s so lovely to see you more relaxed.. …. You mention that you moved some roses, I’m interested to know if they were quite young plants. I have a Sophie Perpetual (bought in honour of my beloved Golden Retriever who I lost Oct 20 was called Sophie). Currently the plant is in a large pot too heavy and big to move it’s not happy where it is and I need to move it, would that be ok now to do so and plant it in the soil do you think? The arches you have throughout your ‘upper’ gardens look really good quality. Where are they from please? Thank you
Thank you so much. The roses I moved were three years old and I wasn’t too bothered about losing them. I would imagine it might be best to move your rose in winter when it’s dormant to be careful with it? It sounds very special I can see why ❤️ the arches are Tom Chambers arches, you can get them in B&Q, on the pricier side but nice and sturdy

Do you ever get rodent damage to your plants in winter/fall or even year round? If so, what tips do you have? I struggle with rodent damage every time I plant something new and have to constantly make wire cages to put around them or they never grow and mature as they get eaten or snipped off

Just one feedback:
To watch you on the screen talking about your garden without being able to see what you're talking about becomes boring very quickly. Maybe more voiceover style of videos would be good. Naming plants and talking about them aren't particularly appealing. I zone out and try to picture the plant. I wish you would have more b roll of your garden while talking about them.
I find the opposite! I love the current balance of seeing Mona and seeing the garden :)
