Spring Cottage Garden Tour - Daffodils, Tulips and Veg & Flower Seedlings

- Spring has arrived in our cottage garden so we thought we would show you some of the things currently in flower, and what we've got to look forward to. We currently have lots of daffodils and a few early tulips! Plus a look in the greenhouse at some of our seedlings for the vegetable patch. Hope you enjoy having a look around.

I think that maybe the “hybrids are rubbish for pollinators” thing depends on which pollinator you want. Honey Bees like open, flat flowers (aka landing platforms) in white and mauve colours best. This is why doubles are a problem for them because they can’t access any pollen that might be available. But other pollinators such as butterflies and moths are designed for tube-shaped flower access. ‘The internet’ seems to equate “pollinator” with “honey bee”. If you like it, plant it. I’m sure some other creature will also appreciate it

16:46 I wish you much success in eradicating the Spanish bluebells and replacing them with English Bluebells. Here in Ohio, I have seen English countryside photos of English bluebells carpeted under ancient trees and it is a soul meltingly beautiful sentimental, ancient sight to see. No words to describe the sight, a solid carpet of English bluebells as wide and as far as the eye can see, such an ancient, poignant sight to behold. I have been intensively gardening for 50 years and I regret just "letting" things happen instead of aggressively "forcing" things to happen. I have slowly learned that anything in life worth doing is difficult. I have always worked hard, but the mental , conscious realization that anything worth doing is difficult was slow coming to me.
We have the Wild Swan anemone in shade and it flowered profusely all summer and autumn in its first year, and is looking really strong already in spring.

I was so happy to hear you mention the type of Hellebore, pink frost. I found one at our almost new home and I did not know the name, but after seeing the colors on yours, I have no doubt that is the one I have. I love that it is just now blooming after a snow here in New England. PS I'm going between the TV and my computer, so my comment might be on the wrong garden episode. sorry if this confused you.
put the red tulips up in the orchard or mix other colours with the red to soften the colour; i think they are beautiful!

Hi. All the flowers...very beautiful. Your lattice divider, I think it's quite charming it adds a architectural interest to the garden don't feel that it's an eye sore, some vines would look quite pretty I know you have planted some clematis. Thank you for sharing.
Before you get rid of those tulips that you don't like, you should find out if they're Semper Augustus. So expensive in the 17th century that one bulb could cost as much as a house or parcel of land. If you do pull them up please send them to me! I think they're GORGEOUS!

Thanks for another lovely garden tour. I would highly recommend you some tall bell flowers, such as Campanula persicifolia, which has been in our garden since I remember. It is a perennial that offers so much and does not require anything. It grows absolutely anywhere, blooms in June at the time of Peonies and Roses and gives the garden a magical and fairy-tale look, especially if planted in mass. It has white or pale blue-violet flowers. Spreads by seeds or roots, so every few years you can get many new plants by dividing a clump. It attracts solitary bees who like to sleep in its flowers. And if you take time to deadhead individual bell-shaped flowers, it will bloom for the second time (in our country in the time of hydrangeas). It gives a height and romance to the garden and I think that would compliment your garden perfectly.

Rather than immediately pulling out the red tulips (which i totally understand), would you consider planting a variety than compliments the colour? I think it could ease the harshness of a wave of red.
I'm in love with your garden! I have my own tiny garden. But I have no enough space to grow everything I want to. But a tiny one is better than nothing.

Lovely tour as always! I'd suggest you just harvest the red tulips to take inside - that way you don't see them in the garden but still get some use out of them. 😊 And I'm sure they would look lovely somewhere in the house! 🌷

I think a herb garden is really lovely. I am growing a lot of varieties of Thyme some of which get delicate purple flowers which the bees really enjoy. I also have a few varieties of Rosemary, the scent is gorgeous. Both of these types of herb are evergreen in my location so that is a plus. I also have just bought some oregano which is supposed to have lovely flowers for the pollinators, I have heard it can be invasive so I am playing it safe by keeping mine in a container. Also it is really nice to be able to use your own home grown herbs for cooking. So many advantages for adding herbs to the garden, I highly recommend!

Thanks so much for your guidance once again. Our weather here has been uncharacteristically cold, with two days of small hail and even snow on the mountains behind us twice, including today (!), and so it's tempting to try more of your approaches. Yet here in Santa Barbara we know the heat will come and the rains will end. Still, it's wonderful to indulge in your tour of experiences~~
This makes me so happy! Winter appears to be everlasting in Scandinavia this year😅 In the bamboo bed, I think japanese anemones would be lovely, but I think it would be even more spectacular if you added actaea simplex "Brunette" as well! It is quite big, but never overwhelming, and the spires of flowers in autumn have the most amazing scent❤ You could try gilennia trifolia as well. Both of those would be good with your colours, and also the dappled shade🥰

If someone pointed this out earlier, I apologize for the redundancy. Commercial hybrids are typically more vigorous, however the hybrid vigor is a function of genetic distance. The result is often sterile. Sterile flowers have no pollen. Nectar is a separate incentive unaffected or even improved by hybrid vigor.

4:12 Yes, the autumn mess, I leave all dead stems where they were until the perennials begin to re emerge, If I remove all dead leaves and stems too soon, I have no way of knowing what is planted where and there is the risk of driving the shovel down through bulbs and roots that have slowly been increasing in size for many years.

Your garden looks wonderful. Just be careful with the sneezewort. I put it in our garden and it has completely taken over
so inspiring! We finally got around last week to remodel our garden and put in flower beds for the first time and I am beyond thrilled to see the first flowers developing! Do you have any tip on when (as in what time of the year) to prune the climbing roses?

Lovely tour.I adore the primroses. It’s amazing how they proliferate when left alone. I think Japanese Anemones are a good idea too as they require hardly any care. Foxgloves would be another possibility if you are going for the woodland look.
Or maybe you plant a nice hydrangea. It also left something nice to watch on in winter

I’ve heard that using predator scents in the garden can deter rabbits and deer. Here in Oregon, you can buy “zoo doo”, which is composted manure from zoo big cats. It’s not supposed to stink to humans but it keeps pests animals away. It might be worth a try to let your crocus bulbs grow new foliage and allow the existing bulbs to survive. I think you only have to spread it a few times in the spring
I have an acre cottage garden one county down from you with three 'stands' of bamboo! I also have Japanese anenomes which can be a bit of brute too. My favourite late spring bulb, which the bees adore, is Sicilian Honey Garlic. Give it a try 😊
I used to turn my nose up at red tulips but after so many years growing soft colours I’m coming round to a bit more colour. Partnered with purple perennial wallflowers they can look really joyful at this time of year.

Pink clover is an excellent flower for wildlife, but beetles, moths and loads of other insects are pollinators. The blue tit is the one to pollinate the imperial fritillaries for example. Verbena bonariensis is a very tall but airy plant also a good flower for us and the wildlife.
Im planting Anemone 'September charm' for autumn colour and pollinator support. Your garden's looking lovely ❤

That bee! The garden is lovely but I've never seen a black bee before. We have european bees here in Australia and a few native varieties such as the blue banded bee but that black one is gorgeous.
Maybe Anemone 'Honorine Jobert' in the shade and Sanguisorba officinalis ('Red thunder') and Origanum vulgare in the meadow?
A trained camellia in the former bamboo patch would look charming. Or if you want something edible, then a quince.
I would make it a Dahlia bed 💜
Hi regarding daffodils for pollinators I watch Joel Ashton wild your garden and he says English daffodils are good for pollination I myself thought all daffodils were the same.
A lot of hybrid daffodils are sterile, or nearly so. Which means that they have no nectar or pollen for pollinators. The pollinators are still attracted to the flowers, but get no reward for their visits.

What about a peony or maybe miniature type hydrangea? I really enjoy your content.
I think you should get rid of the tulips you don't like. You should love everything in your garden, and you clearly have a vision that they are not part of. Don't feel guilty, just do it. I've planted loads of things in my garden over the years that I've taken a turn against. Out they come and time for something new. That's how gardens get better and better over the years.
Could the Daffs be Dutch Master? I grow them here in Canada and I find they grow quite late here. They are very sturdy daffs and bright yellow. I'm not sure if the size of yours are large enough, it's hard to see from the video but that might be them.
Did you make the wattle fence?? I want to make one!!
How do you prevent squirrels from thieving all those bulbs?
I am wondering will there be bluebells to look forward to?
oh wow, I just heard you say, Bluebells have appeared. I can't wait to see them, save your seeds and plant them in an old pot, it will take 2 years to develop bulbs, but what a windfall when they do, just be patient.
Do you know the name of the roses? I love tulips no matter what colour they are ..ao if you dug them out please post it to me 😂 abd lover your garden
