For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a German nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank goodness!
Not to forget this part: «The manuscript was nearly lost in World War II, when being transported for safekeeping to Prussia by train in the care of a librarian. The train came under aerial bombardment, and the librarian escaped from the train to the nearby forest, with the scores hidden under his coat.» Those concertos have been through a lot.
my favorite thing about this is the subdued-looking middle aged man sitting at a harpsichord and shredding like Hendrix, with barely an indication in his face or posture that he's a rock-god. Thank you, Richard Egarr!
I would like to thank the NBS for this recording. I am currently recovering from surgery for endometriosis - finally - after sixteen years of debilitating, worsening pain. For the many years I was in pain, and now in recovery, the music of Bach has been my lasting refuge; when medicine and doctors repeatedly failed me, there was nowhere else to turn. There is no other recording of this piece quite like this one. When I watch this I feel the musicians' joy with them, and the notes leap off their pages in such a profound way that, at times, it lifted pain as I listened, even if for just a moment. Please know that this music comforted me and encouraged me at a time when I truly needed it. Sharing these musical gifts with the world makes a real and lasting difference.Thank you!! - a musician, baroque violinist, and grateful supporter
at the end of allegro it genuinely shocked me when bach just goes from this absolutely insanely wicked harpsichord solo for the past few minutes to back to the nice melody outta nowhere
Congratulations to the Nederlands! Before you had Rembrandt, van Gogh and Mondrian, now you have De Netherlands Bachvereniging, which is able to bring a composer who has been dead for almost 300 year back to life. The skills and enthusiasm of every single member are incredible. If there is a Minister of Culture in the Netherlands (forgive an ignorant Dane), and if it had been me, I would give each one of them a medal!
I just can't BELIEVE I'm watching this precious group playing the music of the "Great One" in THAT place in front of my favorite painting of another "Great One".
I have been listening to Bach's Brandenburg Concerti all my life - I thought I knew them reasonably well. This performance was for me, as if I was hearing it for the first time. So much scholarship, so many new insights, such virtuosity from all involved, yet worn so lightly. A joy and a pleasure. Many, many thanks. Long may all continue to make music and once this pandemic is over, many more and new recordings to share with the world. Bravissimi!
I love this performance so much, especially the harpsichord solo in the Allegro. Before there was the electric guitar solo, there was the Brandenburg #5!
Ikr like some of Bach’s pieces are best played at a fast tempo but the Brandenburg concertos in my opinion should be played slowly but not too slow which is why I love this version❤️❤️❤️
The cellist is a wonderful musician but this time the choice was wrong, in my opinion. Too loud and heavy! On the other hand you can hardly hear the Ruckers.
I know it’s not proper to clap in between movements, but that first movement is packed with so much tension during the harpsichord solo that I just can’t help but jump for joy after the closing ritornello. Or maybe that’s just me haha 😂
In Toronto, during a concert by the Akademie fuer alte Musik, the audience burst out in spontaneous applause after the harpsichord solo. The orchestra really enjoyed that.
Yes! And remember that, in Mozart's time, the audience usually clapped DURING concertos or symphonies. We have a letter of Mozart explaining he was very happy because the audience clapped during à symphony, showing for him that people understood his music. Clapping at the end is obviously an habit of XIXth century. Greetings from France.
When I played violin in the Royal Ballet orchestra, in Sleeping Beauty the audience would start to applaud during the pas de deux and continue throughout most of the last act! We certainly didn't mind.
Loved watching the performers against the backdrop of Rembrandt. The sound is a revelation. Loved the harpsichord solo! Long live the Netherlands Bach Society!
It is so fabulous to listen to the 'Brandenburg Concerto' with such clarity of sound, excellent camera work, outstanding montage, editing and clear photography image of the instruments and on top, the performance took place at the Gallery of Honour at the Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam, perfect acoustic sound. Thank you Nederlands Bach Society and the background people involved who made this concert so beautiful and compelling to watch.
I love this performance. I am a great grandmother and heard a portion of the concerto while the grandolls were watching little Einsteins and went searching and found this. I am so happy! Thank you
Superb trio work with Egarr, Sato and Root, in this brilliant rendering of yet another priceless masterpiece. Bach is very much alive and well thanks to the Society. Magnificent harpsichord, strings and flute playing. Heaven on earth.

In Holand know how to play the everlasting music von Unser Vater JS Bach. Their ensembles and soloists are the very best. How proud would Unser Vater be with their performances... cleanly outstanding. Thank you Netherlands for your divine Passion.
Heerlijk!
The sounds of the instruments..so warm and natural. Beautiful solos, duets, and solid ensemble. Perfect interpretation! Love the way Sato balances out the traverso on the second movement. Such maturity. Never heard this third movement played with such lightness, but yes, it really should be played with this lightness. I had always felt uncomfortable and a kind of awkwardness hearing other performances of this movement. What a charming and delightful harpsichord!
Mankind's perfection is above nature's pefection. Nature does mistakes from time to time. Bach's music is more than music, it is perfection through sound. Congratulations to all involved on this recording by the Netherlands Bach Society. Bach is amazing, and more amazing and because such amazing rendering!
Bravi! to NBS and their supporters! This true to the nature of J.S.Bach performance by harpsichordist Richard Egarr along with other soloists Shunske Sacto and Marten Root makes this ensemble’s performance of the well known piece sound resonant, vivid and intimately engaging. Nuanced and fearlessly expressive details of phrasing and the freedom of rubato to bring the emphasis on climactic moments gives much distinction to this outstanding rendition that combines intellectual clarity and passion - the medicinal balance, so brilliantly achieved by the unsurpassed Music Therapist of all times.
My sincere compliments for the beautiful performance by this ensemble of the marvelous 5th Brandenburgs concerto and the terrific setting. However I seriously wonder if the (sometimes extreme) rubatos, which the player applies have actually been indicated in the original manuscript. Remember, Bach did not write romantic, rather baroque music. For me those free tempo changes are pretty disturbing, as they seem to serve no other purpose than to point to the virtuosity of the player (which we appreciate), thus hurting not only the structure, i.e. the internal consistency and the rythm of the piece, but even the broken chords, which are literally transformed into arpeggios. Can anybody explain, why those tempo changes have nevertheless been introduced?
Beautiful sound. I like your outfit Mr. Sato. It's the kind of colors and clothes classical musicians should wear intead of the gloomy and boring black clothes which makes the public feels it is attending a funeral (not even at funerals people wear black clothes anymore (fewer and fewer people). It's always delightful to listen to a group of professional muscians interpreting some of the most beautiful music ever composed. The harpsicord is very eloquent here (good job). And the flute was sweet (a little shy, though). The fast movements were interesting but you could spice them up a little bit more. Bach's music is sublime and/ but also very exciting. It's the pulse what makes it exciting, not exaggerated dynamics or rubato (challenging, given the voices are moving all the time). I love the paintings in the back. Interesting performance, Bravo!!
What a grand performance! What a beautiful, historical performance site! Such magnificent musicians! I am so very happy that I got to visit the Bach Haus in Eisenach a few years ago. You guys and gals are amazing. I love you all!!
Bach truly loved his diminished chords. The harpsichord cadenza predicts the likes of McCoy Tyner (ca. 8:25 - use of pedal-point) and Cecil Taylor/Don Pullen (ca. 8:38 - mad-like descending phrases just after he switches to another registration). Bravo composer-improvisers, of all eras and idioms. You keep the music moving forward ~~~
Such extraordinary interpretation. I had the honour of going to AAM's concert in Shanghai, led by Mr. Egarr; that was years ago, and the way he introduced the Six Brandenburg Concertos were so spot on and easy to understand. Great to see him on NBS too.
Oh my goodness, I’ve been on an exhaustive search for years looking for the name of this piece that’s been maddening. I remember so many beautiful pieces that I used to play in high school as a violinist, but I could not call to mind the name of this particular one. At long last, I can finally add this to my playlist. Thank you for this 😊🎻❤️
Beautiful concert! I recall being at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam summer of 1977 & that I couldn't get my pork chop well done while dining out. I'm glad that Rembrandt's The Night Watch is still there and a precious backdrop for this ineffable musical work of art. The Harpsichord is audible & present throughout. The solo was impeccable! In other ensembles I've heard, the harpsichords are smaller and inaudible. Very good tempo, not hastily, "gotta get through it" fast. I love how the concertmaster kept eye contact with the other musicians. Overall, this was an outstanding performance.
Some "Christmas" ago I had the great privilege to attend a concert by the Orlando Philarmonic in which they masterfully performed the six Brandenburg concertos, it was a paradise on earth; now I recall those wonderful moments watching the #5 by the Netherlands Bach Society. Thanks for the music.
This recording can serve very well as the tutorial for all pianists of all ages and all levels, performing often required for exams solo pieces by J.S.Bach, to help RECOVER from still most common paralyzing tradition of emotional self-repression, that somehow is still promoted as the feature of “the time period” and sadly, still serves as the most traumatic standard in most of even best music schools and institutions all over the world... Bravi NBS ! for liberating the legacy of our outstanding Music Teacher of all time J.S.Bach.
I rarely pay more attention to the musicians than Bach, but Brandenburg is sometimes an exception, because my God how beautiful was that Adagio! Two captivating and recognizable musicians Mr Sato and Root I listen to in awe with their many performances. And an outstanding harpsichord player as well made the trio middle movement really wonderful
Rembrandt is the "Bach" of the painting..and Bach is the "Rembrandt" of the music. Thanks for that wonderful performance, lovely place, lovely city, great musiciens, the masterwork behind...of course, the harpsichord remember me the virginal of some Vermeer's paintings. Thank you for share with us!!😉😉👌👌
It is important to note that Bach wrote the Brandenburg concertos before 1721. He didn't write the concertos specifically for Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt but he compiled those six into a perfectly written score for him. The big difference is that HAD he not compiled them for the nobleman, we would only know parts of #1 and #3 and #4 as a harpsichord and recorders concerto (#5 would have survived regardless since it exist in multiple copies). #2 and #6 would be completely lost, also the third movement of #3 would be lost. Some movements would have survived as cantatas sinfonies. We are VERY lucky he sent these 6 treasures at the end of his Kohten days. Many other concertos didn't survive in any shape or form.
As always an exquisite performance. I love this ensemble! You always bring tears to my eyes - living in Malaysia there is no way at the moment to hear this type of performance with these instruments in such an acoustic setting, so thank you! I always use your videos for teaching purposes.
That actually happened a few years ago when Egarr & co performed this work here in DC. After the solo, people woooo-ed, held up the index and pinkie fingers, etc, like you’d see at any rock concert. So unlike classical music audiences. Now I can’t help but remember that moment and do the same when I hear recordings.
i always love the way of playing the violin of the eastern violinist on the left of the screen of the videos of this wonderful group. The negative thumbs that we can see in any video of you tube; of the only music, old or classic seems totally abnormal to me. for example, a few days ago a saw it in a video abou palestrina´music¡¡¡¡ when he used only THE BEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT POSSIBLE: THE HUMAN VOICE. IT A VERY VERY REAL PITY FO ME TO FEEL THAT NEGATIVE FEELING BEFORE SUCH SUBLIME BEAUTY.
GROSSARTIG !!

Marten Root, Shunske Sato and Richard Egarr best team of ever!
3:05 I love this slight pause and then the subsequent movement - very dramatic.
3:32-4:20 This is the most exquisite rendering of this portion I have ever heard. It sounds like a passage from a tender cantata.

Such a masterpiece from the divine Mr. Bach.
This is one of my favorites--how, at 8:40, Bach invents the Heavy Metal guitar solo hundreds of years before electricity. Just astounding.
I always want to clap after that cadenza
Excellent; outstanding! One of my favorite pieces by Bach.
Excellent! This is my favorite Brandenburg and my favorite group of musicians🎶
Another stellar performance by Mr. Sato and the NBS. Thanks so much to the musicians and all the staff involved in this beautiful recording.
As always an exquisite performance. I love this ensemble! You always bring tears to my eyes - living in Malaysia there is no way at the moment to hear this type of performance with these instruments in such an acoustic setting, so thank you! I always use your videos for teaching purposes.
I know you're not supposed to hoot at a concert like this, but after that harpsichord solo I don't think I could contain myself.

Renato Rubino, I agree at all
I love the expressive playing and ensemble quality. Fantastic performance!
Lifted my heart really, really high with this performance. Very passionate yet with control. Kudos.
great interpretation of cadenza and use of instruments
