Terry, can’t believe you’ve been around for 10 years and I only found you a year ago. Yes, you certainly are crazy and make very enjoyable videos. Keep rockin!
That "shaker" really is Robert Plant's voice. If you notice the times that he says "fire", the shaker stops before he says it, and then starts again afterwards.
These are the best videos on Zeppelin drums, and the most entertaining! Keep up the great work! :) And yes, the crash at o:21 is pure magic. I remember laying on the floor, in-front of my 80s boombox, listening to this. The speakers were awesome and that crash was simply beautiful. 😎
I find you fascinating, matey. We're all trying to work out "what the fuck" Bonham plays. You're definitely the drummer that thinks about this the most. That I've seen...and I've seen a lot!
That’s great I’m glad You popped up because I’m the same way crazy with music and other stuff I know I’m different lol. Also the way you said “D yer Maker” sounds like “Ja maica” 🤙🏽 KOOL STUFF MON
Terry your a mad man . I love your channel . Your a true Zeppelin fan. I love the way you explain things . I laugh in a good way . Bonham was my idol when I was growing up . Great job keep it up 😎✌️😎✌️😎🥁
8:16 is money. You are 100% correct... love the passion brother. Edit: it basically creates a woosh type gate into the next note.. creates the "glue" and dynamics.
I read they did have to put some distance between Bonham and the mics...in fact, they put him in the hallway if I remember right. …he was just too powerful
That and his drums were ernormous in size(especially in comparison to the standard drum kits today), and Bonham could play dynamically to get whatever sound desired out of them. Terry's kit and his tuning is very similar to Bonham in this track, in fact he almost unknowingly contradicts what he states about all the recording audio tricks to get Dyer Makr drum sound.
Agreed! Great song! I've always especially enjoyed the drums in this song. I could listen to the drum track alone (no guitars/no bass/no vocals) and be happy! If you haven't already, you should do an analysis on the drums to "Fool In The Rain." I'd love to watch that!
"And i can assure you, i am crazy" I fucking love you man hahahah me too. your really easy for me to understand, i really appreciate your videos dude=]
Hey I didn't watch the whole video so sorry if my comment is stupid but... Do you have any idea what exact model of the kit Bonham used? (I'm interested in the toms mostly, they have a beautiful cracking sound when he hit them.) and the heads he used as well if you have any info on that, Thanks!
You know what I hear? Stop me if I'm wrong, but every once in a while I think he's chicking the hats instead of hitting them. That's how I play it anyway; maybe it's an artifact of slowing the drum track, or maybe he's mixing it up w little chicks here and there on 3 or 4. *edit: I hadn't listened to this since before making my new speakers, and now I can tell that I'm just emulating a shaker with the occasional chick when I play it. I got the Raal Original ribbons, and now that every little detail comes through I can also discern that you're right he's using a pick on the bass. I also hear the hats very very faintly playing throughout that long fill in the middle, interestingly. Lastly, that part where the shaker changes sound, it also moves to another part of the soundstage for those. And now for something completely different: do you like Page's deluxe edition remasters? I think he kind of ruined a lot of the top end. I use a spectrograph to listen to music, so I can really see what's going on and in the deluxe remasters lots of the high hats are off the charts. Acoustic guitar parts too, like That's the Way ugh. But I could hear a part, and like I said earlier maybe it's just the new speakers, but I could hear a vocal ad lib part throughout the end of Black Dog that I never noticed before. So I guess it's hit-and-miss. I just usually go for the originals. Sorry I don't seem to understand paragraph breaks.
Idk, you have the same Supraphonic snare Bonham used, and the way it's tuned with snare tension, your snare and cymbals sound nearly identical and just as fat without any audio tricks as Dyer Makr supposedly incorporated into the recording.
This is like the Zapruder film of D'yer Mak'er. I know that grace ruff, too. It was driving me nuts. None of the popular transcriptions have it. Before that cymbal crash (with the echo that sounds like a grace ruff) there's an open hi-hat, too. So, what does that do to it? Would love you to break down the Ocean in this fashion. The 12/8 piece at the end has epic Bonham fills.
I have always thought that the shaker part was Plant doing a vocal Shhhk, Shhhk, Shhhk, sound, maybe with some shaker mixed with it, subtly, maybe not. But definitely Shhhk. lol
If i can play this song anywhere near as exact as possible, I'd be pretty happy. I'm glad I'm not the only one who worships our lord and savior God Bonham.
I have a theory on the shaker: it's a lighter. Or is imitating one. I listened to this song my whole life and just recently connected that when the "shaker" stops Plant says "Fire." Just like when your lighter finally starts working after flicking it forever. I had to read all of the comments just to check if anyone else has thought of it. I'm not sure how this changes my interpretation of the song. Someone is trying to start a fire through the whole song and finally gets the lighter working at the end... But why?
@@bonzoleum Exactly! I don't see anyone else making this connection (from a quick Google search) but I feel pretty confident that that was the intention
It came from a time when the Love between a Man and Woman meant something. gone now. I am a die hard fan... You are an amazing drummer. I watch covers of Led Zeppelin every day.
I've always adored that drum fill/drum lick at 21 seconds. Maybe you are right about the tape delay or compression. He does do it on a number of other tunes but there's always just a little bit more on it. Ian Paice does the fill on a live version of Hush (the best version by far IMO) and he does it 3 times, I think. So it makes me lean more on the side of Bonzo doing it. Here's Paice doing it: th-cam.com/video/9L1uRXxKRb4/w-d-xo.html
bonzoleum I swear it could even be an overdub of Plant's or Bonham's or feckin someone's voice! Haha! Like making the sound! Love the videos btw! You are so passionate and it's great! I'm 23 and I wish I had the opportunity to live at the time of these bands were about. The stuff today is a disgrace! Keep Rockin' from a drummer to a drummer! 🤙🏻
I wouldn't be surprised if the shaker sound is actually someone's mouth :) Also I'm sure there's no tom at the beginning of that intro roll. The first note is just so light that the snares/springs aren't as audible.
Love watching your videos man you are the best if you get this message send me I live here in Chicago I love to come see you play send me some performance dates love the channel
Hey, you record any way you want! I could watch you forever and because of your work I have an even GREATER appreciation for the developed gifts that God gives and people share!!! Wow!!! And as for that critic, "filler" (?), "throw-away" (?) HA, no! Fulla fillers, ya! Good ones, mon! Evrytin' gonna be irie!!!

Dyer Maker sounds like a well rehearsed band just jamming and getting the levels right But its a joke for it was not a typical "heavy song" like Whole Lot of Love or the Immigrant song , but a simple little tutu fruit its only rock n rol balladl, but it had this tragedy in it anyone with a heart can identify Again to mention sonically its on another planet from Phil Specters wall of sounds sounds lie a wall of farts compared to the Deep bass and explosion like drums Sir Pagey captured. Did ja maker.... it's a British joke...a man says his wife run off and the guy says did you make her and he says no to the Bahamas ... or something to that effect...
Chas S Yep. the whole thing is pronounced Jamaica, hence the reggae feel. Its Black Country slang for 'did you make her?', as in get off with her. Plant and Bonham are from that area.
Agree, agree, agree!! Gotta be the fattest sounding Zeppelin recording! Bass sounds like McCartney on steroids. Drums sound lush, big and fat! Thanks for the info about the tape speed.
That has always been my favorite zeppelin song. Still is. Great song.
Love your passion on Led Zep, i enjoy your de-constructs of the songs and how you hear them, thanks Terry

My go-to TH-cam drummers!
Thank you sincerely, DTW! Very sorry about the delay in responding.
Love you Terry but as mad as a box of frogs! Your kit sounds frickin awesome here and just like Bonzos on Dy'er Mak'er.

Learning so much.
I really appreciate(if I spelled that correct) how you go into such detail. Thanks!
Hi TERRY great job and thank you for breaking down the song!!!
Thanks, James!
Yeah man. Listening to that song through some really high quality floor speakers sounds absolutely amazing.
Love the depth
D'Yer Mak'er is actually my favorite Zeppelin song. This one is all about the drums.
".... godddddDAMNN!!!! Listen to that crash!!!..." @ 09:05 fucking hilarious!!!
I loved me some Baker and Bonhum, This is a real good video to understanding tricks of the trade ✔
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m not even a drummer and I love the mechanics and sound of John Bonham and Led Zeppelin..
Thanks Jason! Keep digging it!
One of the coolest drum beats ever
i am not even a drummer or very enthuastic about it but i love the song and you really have a nice style of presenting your passion
The distinctive drum sound was created by placing three microphones a good distance away from John Bonham's drums.
Dyer Maker is one of their best songs IMO
You're so crazy, you're actually entertaining!
Great video! I just produced a drum cover of this. It took a week to learn it and had to play to the drum music when I recorded it.
Nice!

Hey Terry, FYI-
Your boy Stewart Copeland will
be on the WGN morning news show
tomorrow, Tue. Sept.30th
For this song, I usually stress the off-beat on the hi-hat to give it that more-Jamaican feel.
This guy is awesome

I hear the ffff into the next beat. I think they did that effect to make it that much more groovy.
hey any online discussion of the slow down tape for this song? i wanna read or learn more about it but can't find anything :()
I thought the "shaker" was a hi-hat tambourine with some flanger or phaser...?
This is like the Zapruder film of D'yer Mak'er. I know that grace ruff, too. It was driving me nuts. None of the popular transcriptions have it.

I always thought there was some steel drums at the end where you're talking about that piano lick..
I always thought that shaker you were talking about near the end of the song was a back tracked hi-hat or something. sst-sst-sst-sst

For most of my adult life I have stated. Dyer Maker is the greatest song ever.
It's absolutely, certainly one of the best sounding.
It came from a time when the Love between a Man and Woman meant something. gone now. I am a die hard fan... You are an amazing drummer. I watch covers of Led Zeppelin every day.
Can you help me start off anyhow? I'm new and don't know where to begin!!
feel like at some point you'd do a respectable Yoda impersonation
Hi Terry! Are you familiar with Big Country? Their drummer is also very unique.
toxie vope I remember the BC drummer being featured in Modern Drummer back then A Big Country was huge here.
hey terry, i know this is old but i believe it is a person doing that, it's called toasting and is apart of reggae/dub music
I've always adored that drum fill/drum lick at 21 seconds. Maybe you are right about the tape delay or compression.
