    I think I have a problem. I simply cannot stop watching these videos! If I ever feel a Bonham mood coming on I'll just watch a couple of these videos and BAM I end up jamming to Led Zep for hours on end. I love it! I also sincerely appreciate the long tangents that occur every so often ahaha!
    Essentially these videos help me channel my inner John Bonham.
    So, thank you!

    Back in the day, when Led Zeppelin's 1st albums hit the air waves, it was like nothing else out there. We never thought to break down the music to find out why it sounded so cool, but now looking back, it was pure genius. Four talented musicians who have left a legacy for future generations to enjoy! By the way keep up the great videos! Subscribed!

    Absolutely love these recoding analysis videos! Very entertaining and educational. One can really tell you have a deep love and appreciation for drumming, Bonham and zeppelin. I just like seeing some one who is as crazy and obsessed with Zeppelin/Bonzo as I am, down to the littlest detail I enjoy learning it all. Anyways, thanks for the great video Terry loving this series keep up the good work man!

    You are correct sir.....Bonham and the Paiste cymbals are my favorite parts of several of my favorite tunes........like the part at the end......now you reminded me of that part just before the song starts (I did wear out several vinyl LP's back after that came out but now I have a half-speed remastered on virgin vinyl I got from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs I got back around 1980) in perfect conditions and the regular store bought original that is still in nice condition mainly because my turntable croaked on me so these days I only get to play the CD version......but now I really have to listen to the several parts you mentioned so this may get me to buy a new turntable and I still have my 1000 watts of Carver Magnetic Field amps and the vacuum tube pre-amp and a couple pairs of speakers (the Carver Amazing Loudspeakers and a pair of Bose 701's rebuilt with modern drivers) ......and yes I have heard the sound of a otter before (hey I live on 5 acres with a pond and creek and trout so I have showed them my otter no trespassing sign) so I can't wait to listen closely to what you mentioned ........I would get a new drum kit but a certain women.......um....has awful musical taste and ........well........

    When you're talking about how Plant adds "R's" in words because of his accent I automatically thought of Living Loving Maid where at the beginning of the song instead of saying umbrella he says umbreller lol.

  • @paulrogers6037
    @paulrogers6037 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The intro fft fft noise is from a level being brought up, possibly to a send. Since it's in time with the song, it was probably a count-in that they tried to excise by bringing the fader up. It must have been something they all needed to hear. It would be interesting to know what date it was recorded because the whole introduction to Celebration Day was erased/taped over and unable to be restored. Wonder if Page said, "Hell no, we're not going to try to snip the tape to get ride of the intro!" He must have wanted it gone because it's not on any CD release or compilation. The weird little squealy noise at the beginning might be Bonham's kick pedal. It squeaks throughout Zeppelin III, most notably on Since I've Been Loving You. Because Page used very few mics on Bonham's kit, he cranked the gain on them and picked up every little squeak.You can hear Bonham humming on some songs.

    • @JohnDoe-mv4ks
      @JohnDoe-mv4ks 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the delay for Page's guitar, post tracking with the feedback up with no audio signal passing through it. They comped and used tons of makeup gain in the intro to bring up the hiss. I like to think of it as a way to give the impression of ocean surf, the viking ship coming ashore.

    Hi Terry. i believe that bird sound you hear is the sound of the tape bleeding into the next layer of tape as it is going around the spool. It sounds exactly like Plant's voice does a couple of seconds later, which is how long it would take for the spool to rotate once. When there is a loud spot on the recording tape, it can bleed through to a quiet spot on the next layer of tape. What do you think? Possible?

    Hey Terry, nice analysis of Immigrant Song! Those birds or dying otters in heat, I have an opinion. When playing vinyl don't rule out the quiet vibrations of an adjacent groove in the record. I heard them on other recordings where you hear the existing groove but because of the proximity of the adjacent groove you can hear that sometimes. The dying otter/birds may be Plant's vocal. Just a thourght. ;)

  • @Lewiiiiiiiis
    @Lewiiiiiiiis 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I didn't actually hear the "bird sound" at the very beginning but I do hear it clear as day around 25-26 seconds. To my humble ear, it reminded me of like when you slide the side of a pick against the G B E strings on an electric guitar?
    Wait I think I hear it at the start now and I'm probably imagining it but it sounds like the scratching actually gets lower i.e. scratching the strings going away from the bridge....
    Edit: I'm more and more convinced with each example throughout the song, you can almost hear the grooves on the string. Oh great, now you've got me going insane...

    During the TV writers' strike a few years ago, Conan O'Brien, who was still hosting Late Night on NBC, did a bit where he zip lined down the stairs through the audience, kicking over John Wilkes Booth and saving Lincoln from getting shot, all while the band played the Immigrant Song.
    It was awesome.

    @jamesmorris223 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've always heard the clicks/counting at the beginning and the other sounds you were talking about I just assumed was Page playing another track, possibly using a violin bow or a track laid down-low during mixing? Have you ever heard Mick Jagger's background vocals bleeding thru the first chorus on Sympathy for the Devil? Or the harmonic "bells" sound EVH gets on Cathedral?

    You're so darn right; there is a high pitched seagull-ish sound ringing there. You're not crazy. You know how guitarists are not allowed to play or discuss Stairway To Heaven in guitar shops... Well, in all of our drum talk - what is the most cliched topic in Bonham-speak? I think it's the squeaky Ludwig Speed Kind bass drum pedal in Since I've Been Loving You. Also - in listening to the "Pfft (1) pfft (2) pfft (3) pfft (4)" in the beginning of Immigrant Song... I also hear what sounds like two foot taps for every ONE pfft... Like there's two slight pressure sounds for every one pfft... Terry, I absolutely love how you take me in on these little sound trips in relation to Zeppelin. I have two things working here; I have my tablet to listen to your narrative. Then I have my phone to quickly look up every little audio thing you have me searching for. I love it. By the way - this is Kevin Kiso - one of your subscribers from a few years ago. My account got hacked so now I'm using a combo of my grandfather's names, i.e., Al Greaves. I love you man. I love Led Zeppelin. I love BONZOLEUM. Post script: when I was seven years old and turning eight. I was at my grandpa Greaves' house in Salem Oregon - down visiting from here in Seattle. Anyways, he was offering to buy me a bicycle for my eighth bday, but I had found this little orange book like thing made by Paiste and it had all of their drummer/endorsers in this strange little book and John Bonham was in there. So I asked if we could go to a music store - we did and I saw a sixteen inch Paiste crash cymbal and it was fckn expensive... I just had to have it because I couldn't believe that I would be able to sleep with something that John Bonham also owned... Too weird? I was still playing on my oatmeal tins and plastic topped cans. But I had this fckn cymbal and it meant the world to me. Did you see that orange Paiste booklet in your local music store? Anybody? In '74 - '76?

  • @surfshack2
    @surfshack2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a ton of live versions and bootlegs Bonzo rides that crash cymbal during Page's soloing in Immigrant Song, and he rides it for the whole duration of the guitar solo , you can really hear it in the 9/29/71 Osaka, Japan bootleg.

  • @WesHampson
    @WesHampson 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah that intro fuzz/hiss noise sounds like a compressor kicking up the quiet room noise or tape noise.

  • @Vahso
    @Vahso 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I swear, I can hear the "birds" in one of the live versions of Kashmir too. I would assume it's reverb or residual sympathetic notes. The keys, in between the keys. Page's progression is very similar to what is taught in Indian music. Very non-linear and freakin' amazing.

  • @CF196one
    @CF196one 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Terry..maybe you could say some words about Bonham's drum work on the live version of Immigrant song from 1972. He really lays down the jams on that video! I imagine you may have already covered that before but not sure?

  • @DeanMk1
    @DeanMk1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I've always wondered about is if there is an electric organ backing Plant's wailing at the beginning of the song (or anytime he sings that line, actually). You can hear, there's something else going when he sings that line....of course the song has a bunch of 'verb going on in it, too, and that might also be the effect I'm hearing.

    OMG I never noticed this before but can you hear? I think they muted the attack on almost all the cymbal crashes? Either that or Bonham specifically chose to attack them that way. It gives it almost a pull back lurch forward feel in keeping with the horse gallop impending coming for you theme. WDYT? Or I'm crazier than you when you made this 5 years ago LOL

  • @claytonm111
    @claytonm111 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think what you're hearing is the last little ringing of the cymbals at 4 seconds and when he sings hammer of the gods

    • @razorfistforce1
      @razorfistforce1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. It sounds more similar to a guitar oriented feedback issue. Plus in the first 5 seconds you hear that strange, feint, "bird" sound TWICE which wouldn't fit with it being the last ringing of a cymbal.

  • @driverguy8927
    @driverguy8927 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another example of the Tape Bleed i was talking about happens in "The Ocean" right at the beginning. John says 1,2,3,4. In the silence between 3 and 4 you can slightly hear the opening guitar riff one spool rotation sooner than the song starts.

  • @fleshpoole
    @fleshpoole 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm positive that the "birds" you're talking about is just Robert screaming/singing kinda thing. If you watch any of the 8mm or 16mm film uploaded by LedZepFilm (with Immigrant song in it), you'll see him (Plant) screaming into the microphone.

  • @jon5605
    @jon5605 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really late to the party here!
    Just listened on headphone to the remaster. As the pft pft pft pft comes in, not only does it get louder, but it also sounds like it gets louder in different places in the stereo field.
    My thinking is that this could be the mix engineer unmuting channels on the desk for the different mics just as the mix session starts.
    This would usually have been edited out, but as the engineer comes in almost as a count in they kept it.
    Just a thought!!!

    • @howtoteachscience
      @howtoteachscience 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      THIS! I was reading to see if someone suggested this. I assumed it years ago and took it for granted. Then recently with discussions on it I chalked it up to the digital age and the loss of sounds we all just took as normal parts of dirty recording. Thanks for saying what I was thinking too.

  • @anthonyglennmollicasr.425

    The bird noise sounds like Plant screaming in the distance and it's being picked up by the drum mikes.

  • @dereklepiesza5022
    @dereklepiesza5022 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The "bird" sound is definitely there, but I think its more of a whiny, shriek sound. That IS feedback. It is the loudest at 4 seconds then the volume decreases lower and lower, and actually, you can hear that sound throughout the song if you pay close enough attention to it. I can hear it again at 27 seconds and a few other times.

    I love my 502 Plus 18" crash and 20" ride. I also had a 20" PST5 ride that cost me £25 that was pretty damn good. I also invested in a set of Zyns for £40 that I believe use the same nickel/silver ratio as the 502 range (and indeed the 2002s). The 16" Zyn is lovely. You don't have to spend a fortune to have good cymbals.

    I always imagined the "phht..phht..." thing was that they were recording over old audio tape (which always, in my humble experience, left some residue sound which came across backwards if you flipped the tape!), whilst increasing the volume.
    And, thanks, I hadn't noticed the counting in before.
    In the new re-release CD, the 'studio' version has the "phht.." and omits the count-in! The new re-release CD alternate mix has the "phht..."s AND count-in.
    Makes me miss my vinyl! Although, I may have worn out the details :)

    Also, in spite of what Page has said about the intro, to my ears it sounds like a 4 track (or some tape machine) with a dirty tape coming up to speed, perhaps in parallel with the echo effect he's cited in his remarks about the tune. Have had a similar effect on many, many 4-track machines over time.

  • @mdgsdg
    @mdgsdg 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    To me, if you listen closely, I think that high-pitched "bird sound" you're hearing is an overtone from the ringing of that 18" giant beat. The sound comes usually 4 or 5 seconds right after a crash hit, that's the most logical thing I can think of... It makes sense, no?

    I think it's a reverse echo with jimmys therman . Also the kick pedal needs some oil on the springs.

    Maybe the "birds" are just feedback like you mentioned, but what if the feedback was created purposefully in order to create a bird effect? I see what you mean with the vultures because Valhalla is where warriors go when they die. I believe the vultures swooping in on a corpse is the indication of death because even if someone is slightly alive, the vulture will finish them off, solidifying the transition to Valhalla. *Hopefully this makes sense

    The "bird noises" you are talking about are Plants microphone feedback

    The rhythmic noise at the beginning sounds like a very compressed tape background noise to me. Also its 'rhythm' doesn't coincide with Bonzo's counting at all.

      Ok. Now it makes total sense to me.

    Does anyone have an explanation for the intro how it comes in all hissy? What's the reasoning for it? He sort of brushed over it and didn't say what made the noise. Thanks.

    I hear the squeal noise. It might be print thru of the first arrrr ah arrrrrrrrrrr ah. Could be. Also right at the start he hits 2 cymbals, the 2nd being higher pitched but shorter so the first cymbal rings thru for longer

    lol i DON'T HEAR NO steenkin birds! Got a good setup too 4 listenin. Mackie HR8's in a treated room. What I hear is the delayed verb of Page's guitar panned right that is quarter step behind the main guitar that's panned left, that and some feedbacky like overtones that might get peaky amidst all the busywork. Bass don't come in until "Come to the land of the ice and snow..."
