Really? I found his way of explaining hard to understand for a beginner, and for me I d need to be high to get what he says in the video 😅
No offense at all, without being mean, but there are videos on YT being clearer to explay the half time shuffle. But this was funny to watch!

My drum instructor saved the 1 e & a for 16ths and used 1 ta ta & ta ta 2 ta ta & ta ta ... for the triplets. Worked well for me and separates them in my brain. Although I only use this for learning the part, changes over to feel once the muscles take over. Enjoyed your break down of this famous shuffle. 49 years playing and still learning. Love your break down of four sticks as well, caused me to pause and re listen to that one.

Why not just "Tri", "pe", "let" ? This is so much easier to count this way.

Great video, Terry! I remember you teaching me this in 1998 and the thing that always threw me off was that damned little ghost note after three. Now, I use this in my playing all the time and don’t even think about it. The key to learning this technique is exactly as you explained; break it down into segments and drill, drill, drill it into your muscle memory and don’t introduce the next segment until you have nailed the previous ones. It takes time but before you know it, you’re incorporating it into all of your music and not even thinking about it at all! In the beginning, it’s important to count. If you follow this discipline, you will soon be playing it by feel.

This was one of the most challenging things for me to learn, but it's actually not that difficult when explained well. Anyone who knows how to count can learn this. I'm not particularly good drummer, I'm average at best, and my technique is quite modest - and it took me 3 days to master this groove, working 20-30 minutes every day. Don't try to work on this in one day, because there's a little thing called muscle memory. On the first day, just practice triplets and take care that every right is accented, and each left is ghosted. After about 10 minutes, add the accent on beat 3 (before a friend explained to me, I thought the accent was going on 'and of 3' instead on 3 - unison with the right hand), and practice that for another 10-15 minutes.
On the second day, remove the ghost note from the first triplet, and work on the ghost note that follows the accent, and try playing with more feel, the way shuffles should be played. On the third day, add kick pattern, work on open and closed hi-hat (open on the let of the first triplet, close on 2), and if necessary, divide the beat into two parts - before the accent and after the accent. Kick is in unison with the right hand - it's on the first two rights - on 1 and let (ONE-trip-LET), then before the accent - on the let of 2 (two-trip-LET), and then on the let of 4 (four-trip-LET). It can be tricky at first, but it's so fun to play this groove😀 P.S. Terry, your snare drum sounds beautiful!
