I don't play drums...can't play any instrument if my life depended on it. However, I really enjoy your videos. Great conversational style, I actually feel like your are presenting to me. Great stuff. Keep up the great presentation!!
You seriously have more energy than a 5 year old. I don't know where you get it. But I would like some of it. LOL I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for breaking all these Bonzo beats down. My mind was blown when you explained the opening to "Rock & Roll", which is one of the first videos I saw from you. Now as far as RAMBLE ON goes, I've heard that the 16th note pattern during the verse was him playing on an empty suitcase. But it does almost sound like hands on his leg, over jeans. ha!
My gut feeling for loving this song for 40 years now is that he is playing the snare with his hands with snares off. Also, during the sticking of the snare, Terry, he is playing the double beat.
Man your videos are addicting! Bonham is my favorite drummer. You make playing zep look easy when really it takes soooooo much practice. I practice 1 hr a day or more if wife allows it lol. Keep videos coming.
Wow. And I thought that extra note was in there all along. I think people tend to under estimate Bonham's minimalism-gotta take that in context! Just another example of the spaces between the notes being just as important as the notes themselves. Brilliant once again! Thanks!..........For some strange reason, I've been thinking about purchasing a Premier set as of late...; )
The answer to your beating on the pants intro 'pseudo click track', which you nailed by sounding hollow, is John Bonham did it by playing that percussion rhythm on an empty pizza box. They kept it on the studio album. John loved being inventive and did many distinct tricks on the albums. Now you know what I know!! :)
Again Terry outstanding tutorial! I too thought the extra bass note was there all this time but I guess it really isnt- thanx man and keep up the good work! Good new years advice as well and Happy new year!
I always thought thought it was always a hard shell guitar case with his drum sticks, More than likely John Paul Jones Fender Precision Bass Case. I have a Pre Bass c/w Fender hard rectangle case and tried it. Pretty close in that sound
Hey bonzoleum, I'm not 100% on that tapping sound, but in the 50s they often used to drum on the side of an acoustic guitar and it sounds like it could be that. It's definitely an overdub cos it's still playing when Bonham does the fill. They may have merged it at the time or just kept it on the isolated video cos there'd be nothing else otherwise... great vids by the way :-)
Hi Terry, thanks for another cool vid. but question: Sounds like quite a few ghost notes on the snare in this one to me. Sort of Bonzo on Whole lotta stylee, don't you think?
Thanks for another great video, Terry. And no, you are not alone. I spent decades thinking there was bass drum on all the e's in the chorus. It wasn't until your video, and I went and played the new LZII remaster on headphones that I noticed there's no bass drum there. :-) And what's more embarrassing is that it's pretty obvious there's no bass drum there, either. Oh well. I tend to think it's a combination of the ghost notes on the snare, something that frequently seems like it's adding extra super light kick hits in Bonham's parts and possibly some echo on the drums.
oh also, Terry, would you be willing to do a video on the very end of the Coda version of "I Can't Quit You Baby?" I know you've done three videos on the song, two for the Royal Albert Hall version, but I don't think you demonstrated the epic conclusion from the soundcheck that wound up on the album. If you worked on it somewhere else, my apologies.
Appreciate that very much. Also, just want to say that apart from the tremendous quality (and copious) advice you're willing to share with all of us free of charge, one of the best parts of your videos is just how affable you seem to be. It's really enjoyable watching your vids, even if I already know how to play the material you're covering.
Cool Vids Man!! Thanks to my older brother, I started playing drums around "68 when I was 6 years old. Of course we were playing along to the first Zep records when they just hit the scene..along with Sabbath, Grand Funk, Hendrix, and all of the others. It's amazing how good Bonham really was. I remember hearing Cobham's Stratus when it first came out and it blew me away so I branched out into fusion and out of all of the drummers I soaked in, I still hear my own musical compositions and it can't be denied that Bonham and Cobham were my main influences. If you can, take a listen to an original project I did a few years ago. (lot's of videos on my channel of a live concert..poor audio and cut up video, but you will still get the message) Tell me what you think on the Bonham/Cobahm influence factor. Anyway, I enjoy your vids and keep up the good work on deciphering Bonham's magic and have you ever tried doing some Cobham stuff or maybe some Brand X covers? Btw, I could be wrong but the ghost note pattern on the Ramble On groove is a bit different. It's seems to me that he is actually playing two notes on the snare everytime...one accented and the latter ghosted. What do you think?
Thank you Cosmic! I'll check out your channel. The Ramble On part could be a little different-there is a drums only version of it if you'd like to check it out & compare: th-cam.com/video/Pza9MSBOx88/w-d-xo.html
Yeah... I heard that isolated track the other day and that is where I noticed that 2 note thing. When you get a chance, listen to it again and see what you think. I swear I can hear ghost "afternotes"
I do hear it-although mostly on the first grouping less so as the song goes on. The later groupings sound like a delay effect. To be honest though-I thought I had actually played it in this video with occasional ghosts! I'll watch mine again!
hey its sounds like heys playing a double on the kick because he is doing a very quite ghost note right after the snare hit DUH_duh. and he's ghost noting the whole time while the kick upbeats are happening
Also T how bout some Bonzoleum Tshirt's ? Comes with a Terry Keating CD with purchase? Lol... Include the price of the CD in with the Tees? We BONZOLEUM BROTHER'S AND SISTERS NEED TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND LOVE...just a thought from your E-learning student Nathan...PS I live in the Chicago land suburbs and would like real in person lessons if possible?... Again Thanks .
bonzoleum I used to do the opening to that song at jams and people would just look at me rather blankly and ask, "what the hell are you doing?"....so yes, please? Apparently I've needed lessons for about 30 years now. ;)
That part where the drums come in and Bonzo is just playing the bass drum. That solo bass drum part has to be the funkiest drum part ever played in the history of music. BTW, I see you're rockin' a new kit in this video. Is that an APK?
Yes-they're a great practice tool: for rudiments, practicing time, fills, etc., and with modern recording techniques, they are used all the time to track. With quantization, playing smoothly to the click isn't a necessity as it used to be in the days of straight up analog editing (cutting tape), as you can snap the minor defects away with the click of a mouse. BUT, my opinion is that all of the smoothest recorded groove drumming of the late 60s in to the 80's, was done to a click by musician's that had the skill to play to a click to the point where it sounded 99.9 percent perfect-which meant that it sounded human, but still golden smooth... And that's the way IMO a click should be utilized. I'm going to make a couple 'Click Track' videos, but for the grandpappy demonstration I need to 'technologize' my Bonzoleum videomaking capabilities to the point where the click can clearly be heard vis a vis my drumming.
Happy New Year! Love your John Bonham tutorial videos. I too was at that Who show at Alpine Valley. Got really drunk there, lol. Jason Bonham has a tribute band to his father called JBLZE. His lead singer & my friend, James Dylan, used to sing in the TH-cam sensation Virtual Zeppelin. That's where Jason found him. James does not have the golden locks but sure has the golden pipes like Robert. He can draw too, check out jamesdylanofficial.com for his Zep art. I've seen JBLZE 6 times. Always a great show. Peace.
As a guitar player, just wondering why you don't recreate the verse drum part. He's not really playing with sticks on his thighs, right? I get it nots exciting from a drummer's POV, but I would have enjoyed it more if you did the whole song playing along with a minus drums recording. No doubt you've he ard this: th-cam.com/video/JfA18PXqkss/w-d-xo.html
I love a person with passion except when the passion involves me having to listen to all his conversation of his passion just kidding the man is great.. but God damn it I need more cowbells!
Has nothing to do with evolution nor is that the explanation of evolution ..it's drums and beats its development not evolution...evolution suggests that the drums turned into a trumpet...false...development is the word to use here.....decent video
Great video! That snare is killin’!!
I fucking love this channel. Happy New Years! :)
I don't play drums...can't play any instrument if my life depended on it. However, I really enjoy your videos. Great conversational style, I actually feel like your are presenting to me. Great stuff. Keep up the great presentation!!
It's all about practice, no one starts an expert. You can do anything if you're dedicated enough
I was finally ready to learn this. Thanks this was fun.

Most bars have outside signs saying
"No Drummers allowed unless accompanied by an adult"

Always heard the sound of the Zeppelin propeller motors in this one.
thank you for the lesson I didn't know how to play it, I know now but I have to practice to master it
Excellent!!!! Keep em coming buddy!!!
I have learned so much from you to improve my drumming skills for BONZO drumming
Awesome video man! Great analysis on bonhams drums
Happy New Year.

Love it, your sort of manic instruction goes well with my manic learning. Thanks bud. BTW how many drum kits do you own?
Hi Terry, thanks for another cool vid. but question: Sounds like quite a few ghost notes on the snare in this one to me. Sort of Bonzo on Whole lotta stylee, don't you think?
Sean Burke Yes-Bonham always threw in some subtle ghost notes here and there..
Thanks for another great video, Terry. And no, you are not alone. I spent decades thinking there was bass drum on all the e's in the chorus. Anthony Stewart I'll check it out. The version from straight off the Coda album?
Yes, sir. Thanks very much. I think you'll find it very simple to handle but seeing you demonstrate the sticking would be really beneficial to me.
I'll check it out!
Appreciate that very much. Can you do a video on The Rover?
Ah yes-I always forget about 'The Rov-a-lator'!
bonzoleum I used to do the opening to that song at jams and people would just look at me rather blankly and ask, "what the hell are you doing?"....so yes, please? Apparently I've needed lessons for about 30 years now. ;)
bonzoleum there is a video on TH-cam called led Zeppelin outtakes (it's the first one there ) in case you still want to see that .
That part where the drums come in and Bonzo is just playing the bass drum. That solo bass drum part has to be the funkiest drum part ever played in the history of music.
BTW, I see you're rockin' a new kit in this video. Is that an APK?
No, it's actually a Powerhouse that Musician's Friend was blowing out for $199 (a 20, 10, 12, 14FT and 5x14 snare). They're great drums!
bonzoleum HA! The Big P fooled me! =)
Hey man. I know I know. It’s an old video. But what kind of PST is that cymbal? A 5? Sounds niiiiice
are you from Wisconsin
The Wanton Song would be interesting to see.
Énorme !
I always thought the story was that the 16th notes were hands on a guitar case.
You ever use drummer ear click track to keep good timing
Yes-they're a great practice tool: for rudiments, practicing time, fills, etc., and with modern recording techniques, they are used all the time to track. I was just thinking that it sounded like that! Lol
I heard he was hitting the leather on his drum throne with his sticks lol but who knows... rumors
omg i love u.

My head hurts...... Are you a HS teacher?
Shall I go get Mr Page and bring him to your house on Christmas Eve ala Cousin Eddie on Christmas Vacation? You deserve it!!
Thanks John!
I always kinda thought he was using sticks on his drum throne...kind of a wood on vinyl sound
I always thought he hitting some book with hard cover.
Holy digressions Batman
