Had a Remi 783 a good while ago, after I transformed into a dependable rifle (less than 1K invested) and used mostly for shooting practice due to a shoulder accident it became one of my favorites of the 308s I owned. When I fist got it I saw a lot of potential so I decided to invest on it. One of the issues I had was that the stock was made out of some kind of plastic, that by itself is an issue, and the OEM magazine was not feeding properly. So I got an MTD stock with their magazines and that took care of those issues! I went ahead and reloaded some rounds for it and I tell you what, that thing shot straight like an arrow! After that initial tuning, in some occasions, I took it to the range just to verify zero and most of the time shot 3 rounds and put it away, it was right there! Since I had some other weapons to shoot I shot those instead, but yeah paid 259 USD at academy sports a while back, and sold it after a few years for 1500 USD, they guy came back from a hunting trip and sent me pictures of the hunt and seemed very happy with the rifle. Sold many others with the same results. I just like getting cheap stuff to work better somehow! Working on a little Savage 64 Precision 22lr ATM and already making changes, issues with feeding again! Savage knows about these issues but still sells the same stuff w/o a fix! Shame on you SAVAGE! Please reply to my email, I'm getting too old waiting on a reply! Had a Marlin 795 22lr and that thing was smoking, and shot straight like an arrow, never has any issues with it and looked sexy with the Boyd's TactiCool stock! 😅🤣😂 good show by the way!👍 AR15 S&W Did a few of those too!,
On both my Axis and 783, I used JB Weld mixed with a bunch of hard plastic craft beads to fill the voids in the stock forend. Stiffens them right up and cheap. On the 783, I just glued a penny under the follower of the mag between it and the spring to make it feed reliably.
I own 2 of 783s (270, 300 win mag). Love them. Both are tack drivers. Upgraded the 300 with a timney trigger and a boyd stock. I could use it in long distance matches if I wanted.
i bought a 243 win in 783 rem. and amazingly it is a shooter sub moa at 100yards, very impressed, bbl a bit heavy but very confortable to shoot, shoot 95 gr hornady in it and it responds very well, my grand-son is very happy
I have a savage axis xp. I kept it for over a year before I had a chance to take it to the range. Probably 18 months or so. I had some small machining debris around the locking lugs in front of the chamber. (Didn't know at the time) chambered a round and gouged the inside of the chamber. I did a basic clean and grease lube on the bolt before taking it out, but didn't get inside the chamber all too much. I called them about it. They said "just ship it with the address provided and they got it back to me in about 3 weeks. Not bad. Although I did pay for shipping. Took it out finally.. with some cheap hunting 150 grain, I was able to get an average of 1.5 MOA, with winchester ammunition without the accu-trigger and a crappy weaver scope. With federal 150gr soft point cheap blue box, i was able to get 1-1.25 MOA. All shots were 3rd groups taken about 2 minutes apart to keep the barrel cool. Wind was not a factor. I have an accu-trigger I was able to get on ebay. I will install that soon. Also a vortex 50mm scope. I may also take a Dremel and shave down the sides of the fore grip on the stock around the barrel and pour some epoxy inside to try and stiffen the end of the stock. Hopefully this will help me get tighter groups next time 🤞. Ammo is crazy expensive.
Savage. Much better qc. Perhaps this will change in the future but I have an axis I in 308 that i purchased with a 270 in the same model for 74 dollars a piece. I routinely shoot sub moa with well over 4k rounds. Only thing I've changed is the bolt lift, nikon scope I got on clearance for 50 bucks, and trigger weight reduction kit for 15 bucks through Mcarbo. Mine is a hardwood.
I can't speak to Remington's warranty, but I can say that Savage is excellent. I had an issue with a used Savage 110. Savage sold me a new stainless 110 for about half the price of a new Savage. The issue was not Savage's fault.
Cabelas did a black friday deal on the Savage Axis 2 with camo stock and a weaver 3x9 scope for $350, $299 if you had Cabelas credit card. All the common hunting calibers available. They were selling like hotcakes, guy behind me bought 4 of them.
They did that again this year too, but with the strata camo axis I xp, I wanted it in either 6.5creedmore or .270 but both sold out before I got the chance to order so ended up getting a 783 on sale for $260 in 6.5.
I own 2 Savage Axis 2. One in 243 and one in 223. Both have no problems in the accuracy department. However, cost and weight savings in some of the components have lead to reliability issues. Both use aftermarket stocks.
@@armorboy24 Small parts of the action break. I’ve had to replace my firing spring, extractor, and the entire trigger group. They’re cheap and easy to replace. But, it could spoil a hunt.

I looked at 4 different savage axis 2 rifles, all new, and they all had some form of rust on the barrel. I looked at 3 783s and did not see any form of rust on the barrel.
Interesting. Most of what you said here makes sense. I have a 783 and love it, but I can definitely believe the benefits of the axis, and would use this video to explain the difference to someone deciding between the two What surprises me is that the trigger on the axis has any creep at all. I own a savage mark 2 in 22lr and that trigger is very comparable to the 783. Both zero creep in the 4lb range and very clean breaks. And the 783 has close to zero reset travel. Not that it matters in a bolt action lol
There are many reviews out there on the 783 that don't align with your accuracy assessment. Some claim that the 783 can hold its own against some more expensive custom jobs. It also appeared on your video that you had the camera zoomed in more when you fired the 783 on the paper. This would give the illusion of a larger grouping. The 783 borrows some from the savage action, so you would think they would be somewhat similar.
hi Micheal, I can only compare my overall results. and i usually mention how large of groups it get with each rifle so wether or not im zoomed in or not its still just going to represented in inches. also whats important to keep in mind with these rifles, these rifles/ barrels are the cheapest and most mass produced results will vary. for example the mossberg patriot no one seems to get one that group well. mine odly enought was capable of half moa, and a sample size of one really isnt all that indicative of a rifle
@EpikArms I don't think there has ever been a glaring epidemic of Remington rifles (783 or otherwise) being abnormally produced to the point of enormous accuracy differences. In fact, Remington has been known to produce very accurate rifles. It is my understanding that when they designed the 783, it was their goal to keep production cost low (hence the savage style rceiver) but not sacrifice in the accuracy department. Many of the reviews I have read are reporting varied (but not greatly) results from various factory loads. Many of which are in the 1 inch or less range at 100 yards. With some research or hand loading, they have reported sub MOA groups with the 783's. Anyway, both Savage Axis and Remington 783 are excellent rifles. I think often, though, its a matter of personal preference or perception.

Does the Axis have a bolt shroud/gas deflector sufficient to turn gas from a failed cartridge 90 degrees at the bolt head, like the 783? Looks like it does in the picture…..
The best rifle of the two is NOT the whistles and bells, it is that it hits consistantly what you are shooting at. The Target itself will tell you which is the better rifle. does your shots group tightly. Are you able to adjust your point of aim and still hold a tight shot group. The target will tell you where to look for problems. Does your bullets sting or scatter etc etc. Most reviews do not show the target after shooting ....

The 783 is a Marlin design. Remington bought Marlin and made a few changes to it and I think it is better. They closed up the ejection port some and it made the action more rigid. The Marlin was an excellent rifle and was made much like a Savage. Savage builds good stuff, Remington builds good stuff.
