This is only a little bit of a surprise. All of the Kennedy brothers were spoiled brats extraordinaire, and their dad encouraged them to be that way. In addition to everything else, back then this was how guys (not me, I'm a total nerd and hilariously shy around women) got women into bed. They got them drunk first, or maybe gave them a few pills or a few hits on a joint, and then whispered sweet nothings, etc. JFK was handsome, dashing, a war hero (though that was mostly concocted) and entitled, and his wife was so glamorous she spoke French, and even charmed Le Grand Charles when they visited France. That sort of man, back then, was *entitled* to whatever he wanted from any female around him, regardless of the cost to them. As for the press, they were already compromised in their coverage of FDR during the '30s. Go look for a newspaper photo of him in his wheelchair. There are almost none in existence. Everyone knew he was in a wheelchair, but it was considered humiliating to take pictures of him like that, so almost no one did.
The problem here is that we live in a completely different world from JFK's. I've recently changed my mind at least a bit as to whether Eisenhower fooled around with his English driver, Kay Summersby, during WW2, after reading an oral history account that says a historian I respect a great deal (Forrest C. Pogue, George Marshall's semi-official biographer) said he actually saw an exchange of letters between Generals Marshall and Eisenhower, where Ike said he was going to resign, divorce Mamie, and live in England with Kay, and Marshall responded by saying he'd cashier Ike and cancel his pension if he tried to do this. Apparently, the file with the letters in it was destroyed sometime later, and after Ike died Summersby (by then married to a guy named Morgan) published a memoir detailing all of this, much to everyone's disgust. Anyway, my point to all of this is that men did crap like this back then, and often got away with it. In addition, we all know the stories about LBJ and more recently Bill Clinton. I'm not saying it was right, but it was definitely *normal*.
As for Jackie and her role in creating this myth, someone below pointed out the comparison with Libbie Custer after her husband's death at the Little Big Horn, just about 150 years ago now. Libbie published books, and everyone (with a few exceptions) was very circumspect around George Armstrong Custer's reputation and the decisions he made leading up to his death. The first truly negative book about GAC by someone other than soldiers who served with him was "Glory Hunter" and it came out in the 1920s, after Libbie was dead. Widows are bulletproof in this regard; no one dares disagree with them about their dead husbands. However, I've always felt that JFK's death, and its meaning in American culture, was much broader than just Jackie defending his reputation. JFK replaced Ike, who was old and comfortable and had been very senior in the army, sort of a kindly but strict uncle or grandpa, and JFK represented a generational break with the past. He was young, handsome, at least apparently in love, had young children, a beautiful fashionable wife, a slightly roguish father, a dead war hero older brother, and a lot of noblesse oblige given how rich the family was and his determination to serve in the government. His death and succession by Lyndon Johnson looked, to a lot of people, like a resumption of the old way of doing things, and in some ways it was. Johnson was a consummate back-room dealer and arm twister. A lot of people thought JFK was going to do things differently, that his election held great promise for the country, and that LBJ succeeding him led to "more of the same" as Kennedy's predecessors. Not sure I agree, but that was the sentiment.

She had to be incredibly clever, don't forget who her next husband was - probably the wealthiest man in the world at that time. I was raised R. Catholic, born in the 40s. You have to understand the culture of the church at the time. Women were expected to submit to their husband and once married always married. For instance, a friend of my mother's complained to my mom that the spouse was bisexual and was bringing men lovers home at night. The woman protested to her bisexual husband, but he refused to stop. The wife went to the priest who told her to pray and live with it. So what you see as incredible weakness In Jackie really is Jackie trapped within the R. Catholic system.
