    Great finds John! The property owners are very fortunate to have you searching this site. Your integrity is of the highest degree and that is so important with this type of work. They will be very happy with your results as we are! Thanks for bringing us along , can’t wait to see what’s ahead!

      Thanks Greg. Definitely trust is a major part of detecting. Some landowners don’t care what you find others are very protective. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to find a million pound hoard but I don’t do it to make money, I detect for the thrill and the footage!! If I have to hand over everything to the landowner that’s fine for me and even better if it has been in their family for generations

    I learned from my grandfather how to make a ring by holding a coin on its edge and hammering it as you rotate it. It makes a very distinctive pattern and I recognized it right away. He learned it in the military and I made a few while I was in the US Airforce. Done right it will split the coin down the middle sort of and the legend and date will be inside the ring. Then you cut out the center when you get it to size. I made my friends wedding ring that way. It apparently was a thing soldiers do going back a long time.

    Awesome John, a nice dig today, a little bit of everything, PLUS this excitement of your new permission and it having a great historical site. I am excited for you and will be for all your digs here. I would love to sit on a rise with a view of the fort area and watch a panorama of the last 1000 years go by, I think of this often when I am at interesting places. On to the next...

    Don't know if anybody chimed in on the coin you found at the 12:00 mark but I would like to add that it appears that it was in the beginning stages of being hammered round the edge to be made into a ring. Usually done with softer metal coins like silver, but can be done with others, too.

    One of the videos I watched you found a lead Owl. I would say Folk Art or being as Owls have more superstition around them than feathers, it could be a talisman. It would not be a very solid Cane Topper, but something to ward off evil I can certainly see.
    With you forgetting things to take with you, I can empathize. I'm a Fly Fisher with a board of stuff. One day I was driving by an outside Trash Bin when I saw a brand new Drum Cart lying beside it. Sort of like one of those "Pull behind you," carts like a Golf bad. It still had the cardboard labels. I use it to hold all of my fishing stuff in my car. If I grab it, I have everything I own and need! With your stuff try an old Golf bag. You can buy used ones cheap, all of your stuff will fit in it and get yourself an adaptor/charger you can attach to your car battery and then you can charge your coil from your car.

    I am hoping that, at some point, John talks about what the practice is with the tinfoil and cans and stuff we would consider rubbish. It would be a kindness, to other detectorists, to take them home and recycle them properly. However, it stuck me that a lot of the stuff John finds (and likes) are the 'tin cans' of five hundred years ago. If what we consider rubbish is removed - does that mean future detectorists will think they are the first humans? Will there be any trace of us in the soil? Will there be a 'dark ages' made of the 1970s?
    And when did we become interested in finding and seeing the traces of our ancestors? Were their any Neanderthals etc. with similar fascinations? Apart from, perhaps, revering something that had passed down in a tangible way like the items in a shrine or burial place? Were their any that were digging specifically to look for signs of earlier hominids?

    Edward the 3rd has that same design around him there’s a chance it could be a Edward 3rd half groat I found a eddy groat which has the design around it like that

    • @davemitch729
      @davemitch729 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could be right that it’s a Edward 3rd groat like I found I know the legend is missing so it’s highly possible if you get a coin pod like they sell on eBay they have a measurement part that helps a lot for scale. Never a bad day when a hammy comes up congrats

      @@thescottishdetectorist hi John I agree my last hammered was a Henry Viii groat with bits of the legend broken away it’s not in great condition and must have been debased due a level of green and brown staining that would not come off so I used electrolysis to gently remove it revealing Henry’s face clearly but I’m still buzzing as it was a bucket lister for me. Happy new year and more hammereds for 2023 🤞🏻

    I'm from Perth and love our local history. Always been interested with the idea of metal detecting since we have so many sites in the area connected to Scottish history.
    Have you ever tried the site near Kinclaven where Wallace attacked the castle there? There are still some ruins there.
    The area around Bertha would have been interesting to scan before they started building houses.

    • @thescottishdetectorist
      @thescottishdetectorist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes I often say Perthshire is the cradle of civilisation! Lots of amazing sites.
      Kinclaven is a scheduled monument so off limits and now the diggers are in at Bertha I think that’s also off limits, but I thinks there‘a roman sites there too and Iron Age

    • @ScottishDayZer
      @ScottishDayZer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @The Scottish Detectorist ah unfortunate but understandable with the castle. Yeah Bertha camp obviously, I believe that was investigated a few times in the early 1900s but never since. The area of woodland at Bertha was such fun to explore before the diggers got in and overflowing with wildlife. I think they found an iron age settlement whilst working on the new area for the bridge and had archaeologists in for a couple of weeks.
      I guess anything recorded on OS maps is difficult to gain access to? There are a few iron age areas on Old Gallows Road passed the golf driving range. The land there seems used for horses mostly but rarely used in my times walking there.
      If I was a landowner I'd say on ya go!
      I'd be fascinated to see what lies in the Sma Glen along the old military road route.
