"Troops on campaign were not allowed to gamble nor carry gaming devices. They were, however, allowed and expected to carry extra musket balls, usually in a shot pouch which was normally checked by the heft rather than by looking inside. The unit‘s Blacksmith would use a hammer to flatten the balls and tap in the "pips" with a nail. The troops would hide their imperfect "dice" in the shot pouch as they blended in well with their musket balls, safe from the Sergeant's eye yet available for a quick game of Hazzard at the camp fire. Even with the musket ball cubed into a die, it could still be loaded into and fired from the musket which is where we get the term “shooting dice”."

    Dear Mr Perthshire (John)
It’s nearly killed me to wait over 24hrs since getting your latest video notification but this was the first opportunity to watch with my partner and my life would of been made very miserable if I hadn’t waited. But boy it was worth the wait.
You have such incredible and varied history. Every paddock every location has a different era of amazing relics to be found, sometimes I wonder how you choose which paddock shall it be today 🤔
Where I live I have Australian Aboriginal history in the form of scar trees and axe grinding grooves, land grants weren’t issued to us white folk till the 1830’s there’s relics to be found but to have what you and the Scottish detectorists have access to on your doorstep you are very blessed and privileged.
I’ve said it before but we’re are very fortunate that you allowed us to be apart of your world and we enjoy every detecting step you take, every find you make, your knowledge and history and we get excited when you do. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you.
Looking forward to you on the next.

    What awesome finds!
Every time I coin shoot here in the US and pull something up from the 19th century or earlier I am awe struck. That you can find such treasures like that in Scotland with such history is mind blowing! I'm truly jealous!

  • @esones1478
    @esones1478 ปีที่แล้ว +28

So incredible to find so many artifacts in one place, Roman coins no less! If I were you I would want to understand why so many artifacts in close proximity. Did the field originally contain a trade route, a village? It's another piece of an historical puzzle. I don't know what you plan to do with your finds, but I would encourage you to record them somehow with the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland or similar. Artifacts in the context of an ancient civilization or significant geographical region have an important historical context. By the way, I'm very impressed with your knowledge of early Roman history and your enthusiasm!

Your sixth sense will take you to this hoard, no doubt.

Your theory is interesting. I was at the National Museum in Edinburgh last week and not only did I see over 2,000 Roman silver coins from the Falkirk hoard from these exact emperors that I found in this video but the museum also excavated two small Roman hoards from this exact field 15 years ago.
I’ll need to let them know that you don’t find Roman coins like this in Scotland.

GDMFTA!!🤤🤩 YOUR PASSION IS INFECTIUOS!! I am a newbie here, subbed maybe two weeks ago, but shared it across all my S.M.P. and have been telling others to check you out!...like MANY of us have, this is a great, great channel lad! Remember, Romania was named so after the Roman occupied that bit of land.
I might suggest, those times when you'll be losing light soon, to just edit in the history notes of your finds later, you'll have more detecting time, and we'll still get to hear the history from you we LOVE!!...just a suggestion lad. Blessings to you!!

Awesome finds 😊 I don’t think your getting too carried away finding a hoard is incredible and the fact that you pulled 3 stunning silver and one bronze must have given a massive buzz a mate of mine found a hoard a few weeks back still waiting on final total somewhere between 6000-8000 of them I’m not sure if there was any silver they look in the pictures like copper/bronze

My absolute favourite part is when you start spraying the water on the coin, I just can't wait to hear what you say it is. Then, later for me, it's off to look up the different coins just to see them in more detail!! Thanks for a great video.Really enjoyed this one. 👍

Another wonderful video. Your excitement is contagious my friend. The finds were awesome and I have to say I am not always keen on metal detectorist removing items that could date sites, but you are definitely one of the good guys. Well done.👍👍

Much appreciated. We are only ever detecting plough soil really so we are just removing what’s already churned up. But the hoard hunter may change that! But we’ll be respectful

I think (Franklin?) Gotshall (19th C English metallurgist, author, scholar, metalsmuth metallugist who restored the Tara and Ardagh Chalices if I recall) or Theodophilus (On Divers Arts) covered the Expendable Apprentice used for Mercury Gilding. Breathing the fumes as the mercury burned away could kill apprentices.
Purifying metals with mercury or lead when you are smelting away to re-coin under a different percentage of precious metals to debase the currency also killed many. During the Tokugawa Shogunate they actually planned for how many workers they would lose. Commoners are cheaply valued.

Fingers crossed more to come! A couple of people mentioned a few of the coins were ‘a bit silvery’. We’ve had over 140 denarii from this field from Marc Antony 40BC or so through to Septimus Severus around 210ad.
The Septimus Severus silver are often almost black, as are the Marcus Aurelius silver coins but the rest are a mishmash from grey to the occasional bright silver.
Two recent ones - one Commodus and one Antoninus Pius have been quite silvery, I was wondering if you thought that might be down to soil type or silver content or a bit of both or might it be an indicator those brighter coins might have come from a pot and haven’t been in the soil as long? Just wondering if they might be an indication we are closer to the hoard site, assuming of course there is one!!
      Many thanks for any help

Beautifully preserved Roman coins!! It would be amazing to find! I've been wanting to go out detecting, just haven't pulled the trigger on it. I'd like to go do it at some old 1800s homestead sites or here in Southern Arizona on my parent's ranch. Don't have the vehicle to get out there though. 😔 Very cool channel! I was thinking (jokingly) that the die was a midevil D&D die. 🤣
