This time I was lucky enough to chose the name for this ship and write basically all of it's lore and backstory. I'm tremendously grateful to have had an opportunity like this and I hope you all enjoy the episode. I should point out for any wiki editors that the MCRN Morrigan mentioned in season 2 was the first ship of this class and therefore it's namesake.
Any plans to "remaster" the MCRN Corvette/Rocinante video? :) (Or just wait until the Roci gets modified someday?) ;) It's so awesome that you have been able to work closely with the creators of Expanse. Have any plans to meet up with them someday? The authors look like they would be fun to hang and geek out with. :)
No railgun at all? In a verse where PDC's are common and effective doesn't that result in the Morrigan class being a very under gunned opponent when facing other purpose built warships? I get that it is usually deployed in pairs but doesn't the MCRN's preference for quality over quantity mean that they should prefer railguns over torpedoes?
Given that Morrigan apparently translates roughly to "Queen of Phantoms", and that this is a fast-attack ship with some models outfitted for stealth, I'd say you picked a pretty good name.
Actually, i am not sure. I mean honestly - while you could create a sense of urgency through clever storytelling, no pirate has a real chance vs Yao and the Donnager...and for a scifi action show, you need either stronger, or at least somewhat comparable strenght of your adversaries. So there has to be more to it than just that.
While I generally prefer larger ships in franchises like Halo and Star Wars, the art team for The Expanse has done an incredible job with their ships. The MCRN has some of the coolest and most unique designs I've seen, and the Donnager Class is my favorite since it kinda looks like a Vostok rocket. I absolutely love this series on the ships of The Expanse.
Kris Handsome although i love the rediculus ships that star wars and warhammer have to offer, i find myself leaning more towards these smaller type ships, for one they are more realistic and they also pack alot of utility amd each vessel seems to have its own purpose, star wars gives its ships classes but their actual features often dont reflect those classes. And of course as you put it, they look nice too.
Yeah, Halo especially has a lot of favourite ship designs, but I love how "fitted out" Expanse vessels feel. Every inch is accounted for with torpedo bays, airlocks, PDC mounts, etc. It feels very functional and real as though a team of warship designers had spent serious time developing a craft.
I love the Corvette classes, primarily for the PDC armament, (but I heavily favor the PDC sfx used for the Donnager CQB battle). There is nothing more exciting than witnessing the power of rapid AA fire, so it is refreshing that this form of weapon is used to its fullest potential in the show.
Me too. Seeing bad guy get one-shot by a BFG, like how Donnager destroyed some stealth ships, is awesome. However, it's nothing next to seeing someone get toasted by thousands of PDC rounds.
People complaining in the comments seem to miss the fact that maybe one should focus on the "patrol" part of. "Patrol Destroyer". It's meant to be primarily an upgunned patrol vessel. The word "destroyer" is meant to denote the increased armament as opposed to the actual ship class.
Its ironic people are complaining because actual destroyers were originally quite small and were designed to hunt down torpedo boats, which was why they were called 'Torpedo Boat Destroyers'. Now the DD-1000 is the size of a WW2 battleship.
I'd prefer to say "Pre-WW2" rather than saying "Actual" Destroyers. Ship class definitions change all the time. One not necessarily less valid than the other.
STOP COMPARING SPACECRAFTS TO NAVAL VESSELS. Space is *not* a fucking ocean, get that through your heads already. Stop using WW2 as the central fucking point of reference in whatever passes for historical knowledge in pop culture. We don't classify airplanes the same way we do boats; so we shouldn't do that with spacecrafts, vehicles designed for a different medium altogether.
GabDubé well.. we dont have space fleets to actually make up something new for. Besides naval ship classes denote roles more then they emphasis sea based. Those roles will still be crucial in space. making the classification less based on the medium to which the war is being fought on and more on what said "spacecraft" is bringing to the fight. Also fucks up your butt bro? Woooosssaaaaaah
it makes a even better idea that of Star Citizen in practice, One solar system with 3 factions, 2 "inners" and one based in space, With its planets be hand built like Star Citizen, a large Belt that makes for PVP, and making the System (the map) be based on Control of space, factions warring for power in their Faction-Only Ships, and pirate players and bounty hunters (that could even be sponsor by the factions) in the outskirts or even inside the faction control area making their rounds. Add an Eve style of Player Based Economy, and Player Built style ships so you can have modular ships like of Belters, and since is more brought down that of Star Citizen and/or Elite being based on just 1 solar system... Dude you got money in hands with that kind of idea
I really like that you’re doing videos on expanse ships that don’t get tons of screen time and/or are some what of an enigma. Really appreciate this channel and your high quality content. Great work!
My head-canon is now that the Xuesen was only chosen for the mission to the ring because the captain of the Iceni took one look at it and went "Oh HELL no! I ain't falling for that shit again".
Hey Spacedock, love this episode. Now that it is canon, it's very cool that you got to add more to Captain Yao's lore with her decision to take two of these Morrigan Class Patrol Destroyers for every Corvette the Donnager carries. I've always felt that there were more stories to be told about Captain Yao, and this is a nice addition to that.
did you know Expanse was supposed to be an MMO before they wrote it as a book ( no money to make MMO), no wonder it is so well thought out and the world is so well built out etc etc... we need that MMO! Now that they have the money...….. come on guys!
I really love the way they showed in the last episode when the Earth ship went pass the portal, that the decks are horizontal rather than vertical. When the ship entered vertical in the portal, on the deck the portal was shown horizontal, comming from Up ( The ship's front) to Down (the ship engines). Really loved that small detail.
At 2:19, you can see a closeup of the PDC on the Donnager. In addition to the muzzle blasts, there is a jet of flame coming out of the back of the turret assembly. I wonder if this is a counter-thrust element (similar to firing a main engine to counter a rail-gun blast). Or could it be that the rounds are akin to recoilless rifles? Just something I had never noticed before.
I love how no matter the ship class, Mars always makes a stealth variant of everything! Wish we saw more of the Shandian, cool concept, like the name. It just feels like every named ship in the expanse has a personality and distinguishing traits, as opposed to other Sci-fi properties where most named ships are just units on a strategy board and nothing else.
I just noticed that the MCRN Shandian and MCRN Scipio Africanus actually have different hull shapes. Shandian is less angular, the round bit of tech at the bow of Africanus is of a cubic shape in Shandian. Really awesome. Makes me wish we could get some plastic models for this show, but outside of 3D prints and Lego MOCs, there is nothing...

I love Cú Chulainn, he's almost as badass as Fionn Mac Cumhaill. Really the deciding factor here is just that Fionn's last name is literally pronounced "Mc Cool."
reading the books now, because can´t watch season three and just have to ad that a destroyer seems to have a few hundred crew in the expanse if i remember correctly?! great video and one of my favorit vessels of the show, good job
Something confusing: In season 1 when the Roci is about to be boarded by a Morrigan class, Amos refers to it as a 2-man skiff, but apparently it's supposed to have a crew of 8? Maybe they just reused the model and hoped nobody would notice XD
Hey, I noticed a small visual glitch at roundabouts 1:01, looked like a torn greenscreen. Just thought to point it out, and that I love the work you do here!
I feel like torpedo-fighters would make a lot of sense. Take a large torp, pull the warhead, slap a light PDC on it, and you can deploy and recover it the same way as with torps.
9:27 Why would a suite of modifications to increase the stealth of a vessel include changes in hull shape "intended to *reflect* hostile radar" [emphasis mine]?
Just try spinning, that's a good trick. Well yeah, maybe it's a space issue, these PDC's seem to take a lot of room on such an already small ship. However, the Corvette-class is not that much bigger and it has 6 of those bloody things.
After the material they released in S5 behind the scenes it seems that the ship that was shadowing the Argobast (The Shandian) was a different type than the Morrigan.. it seems bigger and fatter...
Wow, a Martian ship using Martian stealth tech. They DO exist. Up until now, we've only seen Earth ships and giant rocks that actually make use of Martian stealth technology. The rest just sits around and gets smuggled or stolen, apparently.
@Spacedock First, I absolutely love your channel. It is innovative, incredibly detailed in your assessments and very entertaining!!! Occasionally your explanation of tactics or those inherent in a game, usually the latter, fall short. This not at all to disparage you in the least. The fact that you get right as many times as you do is AMAZING. I have been schooled in military Doctrine and Strategy for a long time, something game companies do not, I believe, have the benefit of having. Surprisingly, to my knowledge, only 2 movies, out of hundreds of games, television show or movies has ever addressed the simple Truth, they are fighting in space, X, Y, and Z axis AND there is NO up or down. Those movies are “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” and “Ender’s Game”. Our Solar System has a unique plane to our Sun, but this plain one is not the option as planets formed. It is simply the direction of meridian of swirling gasses and rock, that would become our Sun were spinning. Even Uranus, though it remains on the same plain, relatively speaking, is on it side, perpendicular to its orbit around the sun. Basically I’m saying very, very, very few mass released media get space warfare even close to right. It makes no tactical sense to come at an opponent on the same plane as their target. Our Air Force doesn’t, our attack submarines don’t and it is ridiculously stupid to do it in space, where you would expect most of your targets weapon emplacements placed to protect the plain that ship is flying.
Great video as always! This reminds me of something I've been thinking about a lot. What's the advantage to having internal docking space for smaller warships inside larger ones? Obviously hangars for shuttles, fighters, etc are valuable but why corvettes or destroyers? It seems to me you'd be better off eschewing those docks and using that space for something useful or removing them to save on mass and size. If you need to transport smaller vessels to save fuel or whatever you could attach them to the exterior instead since you'd likely immediately launch them in combat anyway. Is there a good reason a lot of large Sci fi ships seem to have this feature?
MrDrProf you are less likely to lose your small agile ships to surprise enemy fire, also the deployment time is significantly increased since walking inside the hangar is easier than going out into space. You also have the benefit of not showing the enemy which kind of ship will be deployed, making your tactics more difficult to predict... That said, I suppose there is also many advantages to having the ship be outside, those being that not only is it way cheaper, you also dont waste space on a hangar, which can give you more firepower, or ease your logistics by storing supplies.
gabriel ferraz ah that's a good point. I was thinking that it wouldn't generally matter because you're likely to launch the small ships early on but being caught off guard and having them could be useful
i would say, in some cases, engine power and fuel consumption would be part of it, effectively letting smaller, slower, short range ships benefit from the larger, more powerful, faster, and longer ranged drive systems of the larger ships, while still hiding the numbers of the fleet as far as the internal docking bay, they would need massive docking clamps and what not regardless, so you may as well protect the relatively sensative docking equipment and the smaller ships behind the larger ships armor
Oh god right, Corvette class is the name, not the classification... I saw corvette and destroyer and tought the destroyer was bigger then the corvette....
This time I was lucky enough to chose the name for this ship and write basically all of it's lore and backstory. I'm tremendously grateful to have had an opportunity like this and I hope you all enjoy the episode.

That's just epic. Surprised but super pleased that they reached out. Not something a lot of companies do. Very cool to see.
+Ken Shaw The railguns require quite a bit of power. But, one of our favorite ships is going to get an upgrade someday, so just sit tight... ;)

Indeed.
I agree with this comment.
A spin-off series showcasing major fleet battles and including every ship known in the expanse doing weird shit for 40 minutes

MCRN ships have design feel that similiar to Homeworld Ships.
what even is the point of not having a ventral PDC? Sometimes these weaknesses seems to come straight out of a card game.
The point of this particular ship is compact design.
none of that justifies having a PDC blind spot, I mean cmon, it's 1 PDC, compared to the full cost of the ship its a tiny fraction.
Costs less to rotate the ship
Quantity has a quality of its own.

I remember all these.
I just don't feel like talking when they explode
What do they use for shielding on the ventral Blindspot? A big bullseye?
Nice one chaps!
I was thinking that it wouldn't generally matter because you're likely to launch the small ships early on but being caught off guard and having them could be useful
i would say, in some cases, engine power and fuel consumption would be part of it, effectively letting smaller, slower, short range ships benefit from the larger, more powerful, faster, and longer ranged drive systems of the larger ships, while still hiding the numbers of the fleet
as far as the internal docking bay, they would need massive docking clamps and what not regardless, so you may as well protect the relatively sensative docking equipment and the smaller ships behind the larger ships armor
Is that opening jingle from Battlezone 2?
So is this ship like a destroyer-escort of WW2? and does the MCRN has larger destroyers?
The Corvette class is the larger destroyer you speak of
Oh god right, Corvette class is the name, not the classification... I saw corvette and destroyer and tought the destroyer was bigger then the corvette....
Shojiro Katsuragi I really like the design. I hope we see more space combat in the expanse. Currently at the secone book
It's cramped and unpopular...but this is my favorite MCR design.
Are there any internal layout schematics?
