Question: for the pins, what do the numbers mean? I know for the others I have to print them out that number of times, but what about the pins? Do I gotta print out the 4x8 pins 32 times? Or does it refer to the height of the pins?
Yes, MCRN light cruiser would be great to see, built like this detailed and professionally, problem with the model is: complicated design, and completely wrong scale by the show crew, cause model itself compared to MCRM airlocks is 60-80% larger that 89m stated, but I guess, building it, doesn't matter much, just need to follow design ratios..
ill try resin printing this entire thing. see if that actually helps or not. would bake a dope centerpiece of the engineers side for my factorio inspired dioriama
Do you have any advice on tolerances? I've printed two of your ships and am finding the fits really tight. They require a ton of sanding if I don't want to bust parts.
Another amazing ship I love the show and this models I'm new to 3d print and paint. Could you do sometime something about how you paint your models ? Congratulations for everything
Amazing models. Im printing this right now but i find that my Adventurer 3 (flashforge 5) is making the parts slightly too thick so mating everything up is a nightmare and i have broken a few pieces trying to squeeze them inplace and i have to use glue instead of pins and every molded in pin needs to be shaved down so it kinda works and looks great. Can you share a little about slicer settings and layer thicknesses/infill?
As always I am amazed at the work you put into this...certainly a labor of love. Did you get a chance to see the finished puddle jumper of yours I made?
@@martintaichl I don't know name of the class for TV version of MCRN light cruiser, it was never said, only ship we saw was FN Pella, but that one was miserably under scaled by TV show crew, model has to be minimum about 60% larger to be able to be functional and to fit airlocks the way we see them on the ship, 89m stated by TV crew is just to small, or doors on that model are made for dwarfs.. As for MCRN heavy frigate (someone called it Orion class, but it's not official), that one is a pretty ship too, but also underscaled by 20-30%, I mean, in the Expanse all ships are 20-30% underscaled by TV crew for some reason, and on smaller size ships ot can be noticed, for example the Roci i.e Corvette Class stated 46m, but 56-58m actiually fits the model perfectly, but let's say those are "small" mistakes and can be tolerated for "TV sake", while MCRN light cruiser 89m length (the Pella) is rediculously way off, ship is about 150m long. Example: Front part (the bow) is thinnest and fits 5.4× into length, what makes it only 16m wide if 89m long, but airlock (which has the frame, air/docking bridge inside the frame, and two wing door inside that) can fit 5.3 to 5.5× into with of the bow, now airlocks on the Pella are those same MCRN airlocks we see on the Roci and Morrigan class, which are about 5m wide with the frame. The rest simple math. But, "real world" scale of the model, doesn't matter much while building models, righ It's important to follow design ratios.
@@elvisibra yep. I know the Raptor and Orion are not official but it is better then to call it "unknown" whatever. Scale is actually not a problem for me as all those ships use standart PDCs and i will use the same ones I designed for Roci and Morrigan. Thus the scale is easy. (Not to mention even the airlock is shared on my models ;) )
@@martintaichl Well MCRN airlock should be standard Military issue, and same size (doors, door frame, door opening size, docking bridge) for same type airlock due to spare parts, and if there is some size difference in that, then bigger ships have them bigger, but probably the same, while outer airlock frame isn't same size, and can variate +/- 10% depending on thickness of the outer frame-build. PDCs should all have inner size(the part where cannon and stand slide in and out, and doors) of the outer frame the same, but outer size of PDC frame also depends on thickness of the frame-build, especially length of outer frame, because when looked horizontally we can see that frames sit on ships' hulls at the angle, and angle gives length like that, so in case when outer frame is thicker build, overall outer frame is longer. For example, the Roci front PDCs almost fully are in the hull, while mid and aft are on the hull and so mid and aft frames are longer due to 70-80cm (or up to 10% more) of frame "sticking out" from the hull, PDCs on Morrigan class and Orion class are same/similar as Roci's mid and aft, while on MCRN light cruiser (Pella), entire frames on all 9 PDCs are thicker build, and "sticking out" 100-120cm (or up to 10% more) When say thicker build mean two builds: 1st is build of the frame around PDCs doors, and 2nd is how much the frame "sticks out" from the ship's hull from horizontal view. 1st par is small difference like for example 10-15cm or 15-20cm thick frame, and not easy to spot "from distance", 2nd part can be easily spotted in number of hull plate "bricks" on the frame. Now MCRN hull plates are not the same either, larger ships have larger pieces covering them, and depending which part of the ship they cover they are different size on one same ship (can be noticed on Roci), but let's say those used for PDC frames are all same size.
your work is awesome. printing the Rocci now. im in Love.
ahh. thanks. you just made my day. Be sure to post some images when you are done ;)
That's great!! Love the Morrigan-class!
Damn, those are incredible models, very well done.
Thank you 😉
Fantastic work.
Awesome! Thank you Martin! I’ve been hoping you would do more ships from the Expanse - will be starting this tonight!
You are most welcome. I have actually started to print another MCRN ship 😉
Wow. Nice!
Thanks so much for sharing this!
You do amazing work
thank you ;)
I’m having trouble with the very front part is there a trick to getting them together ?
@@lukericher8353 what seems to be a problem?
very nice. what about one of the pirate ships. The Tynan maybe?
Do you paint before or after assembling?
Before. But i try not to paint at all
@@martintaichl Is there a way for me to tell what color to print each piece beforehand?

Holy spitballs- you did it!!! And you made a Pella too!
I think i need a 3d Printer and a Time Machine to make the time to learn autocad
Why autocad?
@@martintaichl apologies sir - thought autocad was where the design blueprints originated to enable the 3d printing
@@PHDiaz-vv7yo no need to appologize at all. Well autocad is more for 2D drawing. It has also 3D module but it is a real paint to work in it. 😉
how exactly do you fit pieces 10 and 15 for the front of the ship together?
There is also light cruiser (Pella) and supply ship (Barkeith)

Too bad. I do it with zero tolerances. My printers will actually print it that way so it makes one clean tight fit connection.
Is there some sort of color list for each part somewhere?
no, in this one, not. but i dont think that is so hard to see the color scheme.
question wouldn't be easier to have the pins printed onto the parts instead of separate ?
Where it is easier, there the pins are part of the model indeed
Another amazing ship

I use prusa slic3r with default settings for PLA. 15% gyroid infill. Oh and thank you 😉

Thank you for your kind words. Regarding the jumper, i do not believe so. Do you have a link?
@@martintaichl not handy but I will post it later this evening - thanks for your hard work.
MCRN and UNN PDCs in the Expanse are actually 6 barrel assembly, but doesn't matter. Can you build complicated design like MCRN light cruiser?
You mean Raptor class? Well i think i will eventually get to that one. Now i am doing corvett class and after that I would love to make Orion Class
