      I don't know who made the ship specs for the Expanse TV but they are silly. Truman 376m long and 110m wide. 2D model (8:24) photo, will show 125m width, and 132m "depth" (dorsal to ventral) in proportion with 376m length. Then in proportion with PDCs, length is 376m only if those 40mm six barrel cannons with back mounted turret domes are about 3.5m long, sure, except that guns like that will "be super very lucky" if somehow can fit inside of 4.5m..
      So other than scale being stated inaccurate, really bad part is that no matter the actual scale, ship's own proportions are stated inaccurately too, cause no one bothered to actually measure the model for its proportions. And all that, sad as it is, was accepted as "official TV lore"...

    A few things for an otherwise great episode.
    1) Exposed piping, and wire actually is sound design. In modern warships, unless it is neccessary, most components and lines are exposed for easier repair. In starships this makes even more sense as locking things behind panels would increase complexity of the design, costs to manufacture the panels, and add unnecessary weight whic would force compromises in other areas of design or exponentially increase the cost to maintain similar performance witha more complex and/or larger vessel.
    2. Nano silicate lace isn't the biomechanical nano organism. Research derived from the protomolecule would actually be beneficial as mabipulating matter ar the level of the builder's shows a level of sophistication that would allow even basic objects to perform better, so a lighter but stronger armor, with a better elasticity than steel(which is one of the major reasons it is in use over titanium even though titanium is lighter).
    3) Generally speaking, because of the quirks of our naval heritage and history, the Trumans are her, not him. I don't why but craft are given female pronouns, just another funny naval tradition.

      Refering to #3, some ships are referred to as "he" by their captains or crews to exemplify their great power and prowess (ex. Bismark, Moskva, etc). Due to the Truman class ships being the largest and most powerful of the UNN, some ships being called "he" is fitting. Great points on the rest.

    Actually seeing a Donnager Class versus a Truman Class would prove interesting.
    Then a fleet fight.
    Because 1 v 1 is not as common, however, a standard UN group fighting an MCRN group with each around it's BB Cap ship would prove educational as the individual vessels go to specialist roles.

    About that exposed piping and cabling on the inside of the Truman.... I mean, wouldn't that make it extremely easy to repair and make sense? What's the difference whether it is covered or not? It isn't going to stop any kind of battle damage, and if it WERE covered, then got damaged, it would be a hell of a lot harder to get to and fix. I think that exposed wiring, piping, and data cabling is a feature, not a bug. And it's like that on the ISS for exactly the reasons I mentioned (Ease of access and repair, not battle reasons. Because we don't, you know...actually have space warfare. YET.). This is just my two very silly cents. Still loved the video! :)

    There seems to be some confusion about the wealth of Earth in the show. Yes there is a lot of poverty on Earth but there is also some obscene wealth on the planet (especially since most of the mega corporations are based on earth). The real issue is that the more old equipment one has the higher the maintenance costs climb. Earth could develop some serious weaponry but it would require them to retire a good portion of the fleet to do it and that would seriously degrade their capabilities for a decade or two.

    You would need diapers, cause at that gravity, when you notice you need to go, you already went.
    And eating would be very dangerous.
    So racing and slowing down, from 5 to 1 g's, is a better (and more dignified) option.

    Also, it's hilarious when people talk about railguns like they're some be all end all technology that you could never conceivably design an armor package to defeat.
    Honestly, I think it's one of the most annoying things in sci-fi. Like a top of the line, modern tank round is almost impossible to stop at close range with a tank that weighs an amount that allows it to you know move. Until you start adding technology like ERA, and metal foam(publicly disclosed composite isn't actually that good against APFSDS)
    But the dynamics of a metal rod with x material properties at y velocity hitting a plate with z material properties is something we understand pretty well.
    Like yes, the velocity can complicate things. But if it's a fictional universe with massive fusion drives that burn at 1G continuously that has had rail guns for like 100 years and no one has developed an effective armor at least for the most crucial areas of a ship that's kind of weird.

    • @bthsr7113
      @bthsr7113 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well it's consistent with the armor on mid weight warships being weak enough that repeated PDC fire can punch through.

    • @d3ltaohniner261
      @d3ltaohniner261 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is, all that extra mass of armor you have to counter with having enough thrust to accelerate and maneuver it.

    • @larsmurdochkalsta8808
      @larsmurdochkalsta8808 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@d3ltaohniner261 yeah obviously It's going to weigh more and the rocket equation is a heartless mistress. But in a world here the biggest warship's burning at 1g casually that can push 4g or more I'm not concerned about their ability to add a bit more fuel to get similar performance with greater protection.
      And no small part of my point is just trying to mention that where railguns are a substantial improvement over modern chemical guns It's probably possible to armor against them with modern materials.
      Not to mention the materials that exist in a setting where fusion is in regular use.
      I'm just kind of tired of railguns being treated as unstoppable hit scan weapons that just punch a hole through anything they hit, maybe not even causing any other damage.
      It's just very uncreative and cliche. And seems like everyone's just citing some other work that handled rail guns that way without actually trying to figure out how they might work.
      Idk I'm super sleep deprived while I'm writing this so might not make any sense

    • @Loregamorl
      @Loregamorl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@larsmurdochkalsta8808 A bit late to the party but I very much agree. It is very annoying that there never seems to be much of an attempt in scifi to make armor packages/methods that can limit the damage or nullify the damage a railgun shot could cause. Same for the plasma warheads in the missiles.
      If anything, the spaceships might be even more resilient bastards than most modern naval ships just due to their environment and construction. Modern ships can have their keel broken by detonating a missile underneath the ship (causes a bubble, pushes ship up unevenly, causes it to crash down unevenly, bam, it splits). In space this wouldnt be a big issue.
      There also isnt a GIANT issue in space in regards to overall size of the craft. Multiple layers of spaced armor would probably do very well to combat most explosives. Why do they also only have engines stationed at the rear pointing back? I know its unorthodox but would it be good to have at least a small pair of dedicated braking thrusters? Sure they wouldnt be used a lot of the time but being able to withdraw without having to expose the engines would probably be pretty good. An equivalent of reusable flares, to get away from a bad engagement.
      ALSO, why do the torps/missiles in the expanse (and lots of other scifi stuff) have a limited range? Cant they just launch the torp, let it float for a bit, then activate the engine? Meh. At the end of the day its still fun Id think.

    • @larsmurdochkalsta8808
      @larsmurdochkalsta8808 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Loregamorl yeah, spaced armor would probably be a pretty solid answer to railguns as well as that's pretty much how micrometeor armor works. It hits one layer any angle relative to the armor gets exacerbated, so it hits the next armor at a shallower angle increasing the relative thickness of the armor and so on until the energy is spent. To be fair they have that to some extent with multiple hulls but this would be a bit more specialized.
      I think in the expanse at least the answer to a lot of these questions, comes down to cost. Though if you read the books that kind of changes in the last three along with much of space combat.
      Retrograde drives are also pretty sick, I know some universes have them and some don't. I imagine it kind of depends on if the speed of combat in that universe allows you to flip and burn or not, and whether or not the creator considered that.
      The torpedoes having a range has always confused me a little bit. Like if they're going to spend the time and money to put an Epstein drive on them it seems like it should almost not be a question that they will have enough fuel to transport such a light payload wherever it needs to go to intercept something with humans in it.
      I know that part of it in universe is that within a certain range torpedoes will always hit, but to me that seemed backwards It seems like missiles should have that shit probability that goes up the longer they've been accelerating, and only kinetics should require you to close.
      But it might be something about that speed making it harder for the missiles to dodge PDC fire. 🤔
      Regardless, a fascinating universe that asks many questions

    Best thing when people start arguing about aerodynamics on spaceships is that people are arguing about the wrong field of study.
    If you're talking about putting a spaceship in atmosphere.
    Like it's technically just hypersonic aerodynamics. But if I remember correctly, it's called something like thermofluid dynamics. Because essentially you're slamming the air so hard it turns into plasma which has an entirely different set of properties both physical and electromagnetic than even supersonic flight regimes.

      This has been looked at post Cold War and many experts and historians now are coming round to the fact that the Red Army was no zerg rushing mindless force, and in a Cold War gone hot Scenario NATO would have severly been beaten or at least had the fight of it's live on it's hands.
