    As an abused brown girl myself, I can't begin to express how much I loved Anthy. It's true that if there is a narrative with a brown girl, it seems to often be about not even her abuse or how the culture around her having problematic elements, but her being saved by a white person. Abuse was always just a vehicle to show off white people's 'amazingness', their power. Anthy is different though; the show is about two abused people: Utena and Anthy. They both have complex characters and emotions. They do not save each other in the end by taking up roles like a "savior" or "white savior"; they do it by offering each other something no man in the show was willing to give: their love, compassion, and support. Only with this both characters get the courage to leave the school, but they do so separately. They saved themselves, but they needed each other to do so. It's super empowering and blew my mind when I was 13 (watched it being the same age as the characters aaahhhH) Also they are very gay.

    "Utena Handling coke bottles to africans kids" is a great analogy of she trying to be a "prince" and "save" Anthy without understanding her. One of the greatest things of the series is that s Utena realize that this is WRONG, ultimately

    i'm of the opinion that interpreting utena as bi or lesbian is dependant on the life experiences of the viewer but at the same time it's so clear to me that she's being conditioned into having these feelings. i guess it's if you believe she's having her feelings manipulated or being manipulated into having these feelings. either way, straight utena believers are insane. cool video

      @@dontburstmybubble686 i don't agree and i wouldn't challenge this use of the word but it's not that difficult to see why imo, insanity is a wildly subjective term and more often than not it _is_ extremely largely used as a way to gaslight others
      i'd honestly argue the actual concept of insanity as a remotely medical thing humans experience is often pretty much a way to segregate people who aren't okay and demean them, it's a term that in concept has a purpose but in execution is largely used to dismiss, gaslight, or treat a person as "different". the line between just thinking differently, being genuinely unwell and "insane" is pretty much 100% subjective and that's incredibly dangerous and abused, imo - people with disorders of many kinds being called insane has always been a thing and even if we work to progress past that, well, in psychiatric hospitals people can be deemed insane for simply not complying with abusive cops
      essentially, it's an abused term, and in any serious context i think there's room to argue calling a person insane is just a way of putting a border up that discourages understanding, empathizing and helping.... instead of just, well, seeing them as 'insane'. a lost cause, or something lesser people will try fixing with brute force, or insult, or worse 8(
      ......but i think the general word, concept of a thing outside of medical health is still a fair non-literal descriptive term. but honestly i do get where they're coming from. i just felt passionate seeing your aggressive confusion and felt that it's worth explaining a perspective on it ,,;^ ,,,

      @@lovelovemiraclesunsetgirl okay thanks, it just seemed strange but in context, yeah I can see it. For example talking to yourself is supposed to be a Hallmark of insanity but a lot of people seem to think it helps them work through things better. It really is just a word used to encourage conformity rather than wellness when you put it like that. It just didn't make sense because there are a lot of "insane" people like Dahmer but it does seem unfair to group people who simply need medication or disagree with you with people who commit heinous acts.

      @DestinyApocalypse nah isn't anthys whole thing being enamored with her brother? If anything I feel like it's the other way around. Utena always goes on about her prince but her first reaction is to be like him not into him. It feels like she just wants to conform for acceptance. Anthy, on the other hand, is abused by her brother and I don't think she would be that enamored in that way if she was straight up a lesbian. Not saying it's love because e w , but it's not giving me lesbian. I'm bi but I haven't really had any experience with women or being a full on lesbian (one long relationship with one dude but I just know) so take my speculation with a grain of salt.

    Something I adore about the finale of the series and what I think makes it work is how the crux of the narrative is centered on Anthy’s decision to take Utena’s outstretched hand, to believe in the love offered to her, to believe that someone truly loves her unconditionally even after seeing her beyond all pretenses. If Utena had simply pulled Anthy out of her coffin not only would it have been the most egregious of white savior moments, it also would have utterly destroyed the finale. By placing the focus on Anthy, it reinforces the theme of self-actualization and positions her as the most important character in the entirety of the show, making the ultimate choice which defines the narrative as a whole.
    This is taken to further extremes in the movie where the climax is not only Bisexuals Go Vroom (which it is) but also a reversal of Anthy and Utena’s narrative roles, with Utena quite literally becoming a passive horse themed carriage like vehicle to facilitate Anthy’s escape and Anthy taking charge of her destiny, finding help from her friends and loved ones, and ultimately reclaiming her own agency in shattering the myth of the prince and breaking out into the outside world.

Why can‘t guys be close and why can‘t close girls not be in love? Time to bring my aroace, autistic, and transfeminine mess of a perspective to the subject of Utena's orientation. I think that no discussion of compulsory heterosexuality is complete without the mention of amatonormativity. Amatonormativity is basically the view that romantic relationships are the superior type of relationship. For example, how people say "just friends" or "more than friends," implying some sort of hierarchy with romantic relationships at the top and platonic relationships below them. It is impossible to rank different relationships. Someone may love their friend just as intensely as they love their romantic partner. Romantic love and platonic love are just different kinds of love. Also, no actions are inherently romantic or platonic. For example, many aromantic people marry and have children with their platonic partners. Whether a relationship is romantic or platonic depends entirely on how the people within the relationship see their relationship. In the aromantic community, non-normative platonic relationships like this have been termed queerplatonic or quasiplatonic relationships to avoid confusion.
    I love really nuanced takes on relationships like Shame by Contrapoints and Revolutionary Girl Utena because love is infinitely more complicated than most depictions of romantic love (also it confuses me when people say just 'love' or 'relationship' and then mean specifically romantic love and romantic relationships). Utena's orientation could be basically anything because of her really complex past and current circumstances. Utena and Anthy's relationship could be read as purely platonic, but that reading doesn't take anything away from their relationship. Although, I think that their relationship is obviously supposed to be read as romantic in nature. In conclusion, in an ideal world relationships wouldn't need labels. By the way, I am not trying to declare "friendship erasure" whenever a relationship is read as gay, love is just really complex. Obviously, depictions of gay romantic relationships in media are important. Loved your video and I am patiently awaiting part two!

    Okay, okay
    I agree with most of the things said in this video but the thing with Mikage
    First; excuse me, how dare you?
    Second; I personally don't think neither Miki or Kozue or actually romantically or sexually interested in eachother. Miki shows active disgust towards the concept of sex and sensuality (given the trauma regarding his parents relationship and the way he sees adults in general) but rather he wishes to reconnect to his idealized memory of purity and which he shared with his sister. Which is why he resents her sister, for not staying by his side and helping him keep that ideal, which is why then he projects these feelings onto Anthy
    He is afraid of the reality of the world of adults, but wants to grow in intelect because he believes that is what being an actual adult should be. Essentially he is an accidental 13 yo snob
    Kozue, on the other hand, responds to this trauma by having her be exposed to the ugly aspects of adulthood early on, believing herself to be bigger and smarter than Miki because of this, but she herself is trapped in the same incomplete idea as Miki of what the adult life is. Dirty, shameful and cruel
    So, by extension she posses the love she has for Miki as her sibling in the way that she believes to be "mature" which is taunting him sexually (she is a victim of grooming herself after all) but she actually wants to enjoy his company as siblings too, they're just deeply confused

Just because all the men in the story are trash doesn't mean her apparent attraction to them isn't real. And, speaking from experience, it is super easy to throw out those denial lines if part of your brain is going: "Well, I DO like guys. Girls are really pretty too, but...that's probably just aesthetic appreciation, right? Yeah. Let's go with that."
    Granted, I first watched this show as an adult, after I'd figured that out. But just - the intro! How can you watch that intro without thinking Utena and Anthy are meant to be a couple!

    • @Bobsbugur8140
      @Bobsbugur8140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I watched it first im my 20s and it was obvious to my closeted lesbian self that Utena wasnt actually into akio or touga. But it all depends on our lens on the world. I was raised in a very religious area of the world and it was very clear that I was expected to marry a man asap. Teens are easily impressed with gifts and attention. Plus comp het is a hell of a drug. Once convinced myself that I had a crush on a guy when I actually had a crush on his girlfriend. So kind of feel like along with all of the manipulation going on the prince is like the one unattainable guy she has a "crush" on but she actually has the crush on anthy but cannot bring herself to admit it. Akio is grooming her to think that he is the true object of her affections instead of Anthy and that shes a good hetero gal.
      With that being said, totally understand a bi reading of utena as well. I cant put a pin on anthys sexuality since shes so used to being the rose bride. Just know that she truly loves utena in the end of the show

    • @Bobsbugur8140
      @Bobsbugur8140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Another parallel that makes me think utena is a lesbian is how she misremembered her wanting to be a prince bc he's so cool (not even a crush) when her desire to help anthy was what actually lead her to ohtori. The prince never saved her and she never actually wanted to be a prince before she was told it was the only way to help anthy.

    One note I’ll add in regards to the movie, there’s a line about a car without a key will rust, which echoes the mentality of any princess without a prince will become a witch. But then Utena turns into a car anyway and Anthy opens up her palm to see the key in her hand. So anyway, obviously this key is the strap lol

    This was great, im so glad you talked about the race part, i haven't seen many people talk ab the fact that the only poc characters (because as you said so yourself, the story takes place in an european setting) are the antagonist and and the "slave" to mostly white people. Its problematic when you think about it but i really hope that wasnt the creators intention. I do love that they gave a lot of depth to Anthy's character instead of just painting her as a submissive person whose only relevant character trait is her being subjected to other (white) peoples will. I'm not even gonna talk ab akio bc of how much i hate him lol but yeah, because of how little good representation there is of poc (esp in anime) it can be very harmful

    • @nothingirsiatwia7454
      @nothingirsiatwia7454 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      also, coming back to this comment, i have a theory (idk if it has been confirmed or even talked about but i couldnt find anything ab it) that the hair colors of each character also represent the colors some (astrological) planets are associated with, for example neptune associated with color purple can represent "dreams, instincts, and psychic capabilities. She will symbolize creation, illusion, and being aware." (putting it in quotes bc i took it straight from google lol. Mars (red): "Mars is the planet of passion, anger, war, assertion, and separation, and its placement in your birth chart indicates how you pursue your goals, assert yourself, attack and defend, and cut people or circumstances off " . Jupiter (orange): "Jupiter is associated with the principles of growth, expansion, healing, prosperity, good fortune, and miracles." MIRACLES. Some characters dont fit as well with this theory but most do. also akio's weird looking at the stars thing, could relate to this theory bc of constelations. Aaand also the second ed mentions planets but i'd say this is reaching too far.

    • @stushi
      @stushi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nothingirsiatwia7454 there is actually a lot of discussion around the planets and constellations being references throughout the show. I'm not an expert on any of that so don't have anything to add but just to say that you're not the first to suggest it and it seems likely that at least some of the crew was doing some of it deliberately!

    Thank you for giving the first video I've made your time of day, I'm flattered by the response! Any feedback, discussion, questions are welcome :~)
    Edited to address a specific point of confusion/contention I see floating around:
    Q: Is Utena could be bi?
    A: Yes! I think she could be any sexuality except for straight.
    Q: Why didn't I explicitly say in the video that Utena bi?
    A: 1. Because I genuinely (naively) didn't think people would think I'm arguing that she couldn't possibly be bi, and 2. Bc it isn't relevant to my comphet argument. All I wanted to argue for in this video is that there is no chance in h*ck that she could be straight, and I used comphet as a tool to get there. But that doesn't mean that she couldn't be bi, pan, even trans if that's how you read her! I'm not here to tell anyone that she can't be the sexuality you have taken as truth, not even Ikuhara explicitly calling her a "lesbian" can.
    So uh...be free! I am but one person on the internet, making a silly video about a 20+ year old silly show that we all love, but more importantly, love to laugh at.

    It's funny that many westerners pick on Anthy being dark skinned as her being black /PoC. As far as I've read the design was a homage to character in another show (who was ethnically indian). I'm dark skinned myself but I'm not westerner, so I never took it as her being mistreated because of her race, and I generally don't think of anime characters as having race, unless the story explicitly wants me to.
    The interpretation of her being black does fit well enough in the themes of the show tho. It just goes to show how different people from different backgrounds add to the process of creating art by interpreting differently from how the artist themselves wanted it

    I'm straight and I can honestly admit the first scene pulled me in with the pink-haired princess and white-haired prince because it reminded me of Rini/Chibiusa and Helios. I stayed despite spoiling it for myself. I cared, I'm a progressive Christian (although I know I have it easier as a straight person) and they had a Christian theme, and wanted to prove I supported same-sex couples, but I'm always going to feel more drawn to and comfortable with the man/woman and boy/girl stuff.
    Juri is confirmed to like girls and maybe Ruka, but everyone seems to be either bisexual or just full of deep emotions and hormones. I can tell you from a straight person's perspective we do have times where we worry about our sexuality, but we get to come out of it with all our security and privilege. I think this show played on that too and it's something in-between confirming their relationship and just making an intense friendship. I even remember wanting to see a friendship story play out between Touga and Saionji and thought it was a classic example in the first episode and I either got it or they like each other.
    The movie has Utena and Anthy together, but not Touga and Saionji and not even them as friends. I feel like the show is written to be seen as friendship by some and romantic by others, which hit me some years after I watched it. I know the manga had them all end up with opposite partners and even the manga that came out recently borders both friendship and romance, aside from Juri always being confirmed. For me, deep friendships work, but I also know my bias. I don't really want the LGBTQAI+ community messed with like that. Confirm stuff or be clear about what you did, although this show has more respect from me because Juri is confirmed to like Shiori.

    • @quasimodoff
      @quasimodoff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      you have to consider the time the show came on air. Subtext is a thing to avoid censorship, especially on tv products, while the movies was allowed more liberties. I think Ikuhara has comment plenty on the romance he tried to build between the characters, but i can see why people interpret it as a friendship. Either way, their relationship is so complex and beautiful, one of the best still on this day

    • @lingeringquestions519
      @lingeringquestions519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@quasimodoff I've heard that too about Ikuhara. I just got so worked up and I ended up thinking about how this is done in other shows and stuff. I think some censorship is really sad. It feels like a lot of people that I've seen fight stuff like this certainly don't fit tradition or they back people who don't fit traditional values (like they get a divorce for something other than cheating or they are a woman with power, etc.), but they wanted their place and they act like no one has to completely agree but they get to be there or that we all must agree with their lives and it's wrong if we don't but that they can keep other people away or shoved in the back.
      I think Utena covered that too, the hypocrisy in society and how it breaks people, especially in adolescence and how we hope we can break free and live happily as adults. Some people, like how Anthy's brother had stayed the same age for so long, stay in the system though. It's definitely complex.

    Hey nice editing! Basically Utena has enough vagueness symbolism and reference to archetypes that it actually is more like a mirror while your average piece of media gives at least some hard declarations so its like a road sign i guess. Who you are defines what you will see - i knew a girl who just idolised Akio and didn't think much of the other characters and yeah we arent in touch any more lol. For me as a straight* guy the gender roles were what resonated with me, a system created by action on both sides out of good faith and misunderstanding and surviving simply out of inertia as people are brought into it in such a young age that its such a deep part of their psyche that they never get to reevaluate it. This is connected to Ikuhara using ghosts a lot (the past that stays and wields power over us with no visible presence), or the establishment that fabricates children into standardised shapes and formes in Penguindrum. And yeah say Ghost in the Shell or Evangelion use lots of symbolism but they also have a strong enough "real plot" so its not so in your face about it, for the most part.
    *mostly - only a sith deals in absolutes lol

    I just remembered some more recommendations i couldn't not share for who misses Revolutionary Girl Utena:
    -The cartoon called "Courage the Cowardly Dog" aired an watch worth memorable metaphorical episode called "The Mask" scary in how realistically domestic abuse impacted a pink bunny and a kitty, who are a subtext sapphic couple as stated by the series' creator that this was as far as they could go back then in north american television in the beginning of the new millennium.
    -The 2015 manga and 2018 anime called "Yagate Kimi Ni Naru" ("Bloom Into You" ) is hella gay in all the right ways and about the relationship between a pink haired schoolgirl protagonist struggling with the conflict between the idealized sociocultural romance ideals she internalized growing up and her gray-lesbianism and a troubled empty self-hating cutesy dark haired girl lacking in personality and theirs already mentioned respective identity crisis, doesn't this sound familiar, huh?
    Whoever is interested in both should at least seek TH-cam video analysis of said works of art because they are worth a watch, but I believe the @Zeria channel worth watch video analysis of my second recommendation stands out among other videos because I haven't yet seen and couldn't do a better dive at all of the revolutionary meanings of the second recommendation, i believe she is a transbian with the currently biggest yuri/Girl's Love themed channel of TH-cam.

    Let me stop you right at the beginning with the 20 years thing. The timescale at which society changes is not decades or years, its hardly even centuries, but the previous few centuries of permanent revolutionary change driven by science have completely robbed us from any sense of what social stability even means. People are born, grow up in a community and live out the rest of their lives with the code they inherited from that community, but we constantly scream that we are individuals and we make our own choices, which is also true in a way but ask your individual self who are you outside the community that gave you your formative experiences and a broader context for your social life. My point is feminism etc is still a revolutionary new idea in a globalised 2022 and will continue to be such for centuries, and this will insure the continued relevance of Utena in the future. Sorry i had to get this out, 20 years is basically irrelevant, nice video so far.

    I dont know how cultural significant Utena still is but i do know that its Twin Peaks level surreal bat shit craziness means it will never stop being interesting to dissect.
