When you think of Magical Girl or Shoujo anime, you normally think of anime and manga's that focus of very stereotypical feminine archetypes in it's presentation. And for the most part that is right.
But there's one amongst all of them that came from the 90's, in a landscape that was slowly coming out of a post-Evangelion world, where many were trying to "re-contextualize" what it means to be apart of a certain genre, but only one of them would set about to revolutionize it's genre for the better.
That series was Revolutionary Girl Utena. And in this retrospective look on the series, we look at the entire mythos of Utena, every single aspect of it from not just the series but it's expanded universe as well to answer the question of why it's so important today?
Starting off in this part with a look at the first thirteen episodes, dubbed "The Student Council Saga" as well as looking into the creation of Be-Papas as a collective.

It is so fun seeing everyone's perspectives on this series! Although I have to disagree with you on Nanami centric episodes. They are just as important as the rest of the series. Nanami is Anthy's mirror. (Notice Anthy is represented as the color purple and Nanami is yellow, that is very deliberate). So a lot of what Nanami is going through mirrors what Anthy went through in the past.
On that last bit, wait til Part 3, as much I exaggerate the early Nanami episodes, it is to make a point of how silly they are.
But trust me, that back half of the series is where shit gets serious imo, I do get where you're coming from tho ☺️
I love how the dress you’re wearing is something last episode ending Anthy would wear ❤ looking gorgeous.

NGL while they certainly were heavier on straight comedy than most, even before the egg episode's ending recontextualized every single Nanami episode to me and got me thinking about their 'place' in the narrative being stronger than expected, I never thought any of them were out of place with the tone or vibe of the setting. Biggest surprise to me overall when watching was just how much absurd or comedic over-the-top stuff Utena in general was filled with, and the non-duel-related Nanami episodes just happened to bring the most of that out into the forefront. Even at some of its most dramatic, the show can be goddamn ridiculous, and it's better for it.
