My first concert in late 1972 ,Deep Purple we’re still working on machine head and that’s the first time I heard and saw smoke on the water
Actually, Purple were recording Machine Head in late 1971 in Montreux, in late 72 they were in Rome making Who Do We Think We Are.

Machine Head was taped 6 - 21 Dec. and released 23 March 72.

Ask the TV Station! At this Time only the Denmark TV - Skandinavian Nights wehre full filmed in black white. No other TV Station filmed the show from DP in fully lenght in a high quality. 🥵
I've come back to Purple. Would any of you believe - that - many years ago I went from being a huge fan of this stuff, to being a major Genesis Head? To me there's some commonality - early Deep Purple and older Genesis music, but these two are music for my brain. And Purple in 72, it doesn't get much better.

@Cinematic Passages Yeah, a lot of drama about it. They obviously had to talk to each other. Ian said once on an interview that he used to room with Ritchie.

Wierd seeing Gillan & Blackmore having a friendly chat (it was a very long time ago right enough, lol.) Yeah superb clip. This may have even been before the Machine Head album hit the record stores.

@@laurenzgraffilpenstein8117 That's right. I remember Jon Lord stated in an interview about it and joked maybe that was the problem that they were too sociable with each other. In some ways i think they were quite similar being strong willed/opinionated and single minded. It's a shame as the classic MK2 lineup with them had such a stunning chemistry.
@@DCHurlford1 that's the biggest shame in rock n roll history once Lord stated. Yes, perhaps he is right. An amazing group at their best...
I saw Frank Zappa in Germany in 1980. I couldn't believe people sit on the floor for the whole concert. Especially for Deep Purple, you want to be rowdy and moving around.

Ian's Ludwigs, with that custom 10" x 16" tom, trips me out every time.
And 16 x 18, 18 x 20 floors and 14 x 26 bass drum ...cheers !

I love the narration, the running conceit of a religious gathering: "Die Halbgoetter erscheinen vor ihren Glaeubigen." Hilarious. Very German.

Lol, oh well........at least they weren't coming to blows. Although i'm sure that did occur from time to time. Shame the classic lineup only lasted until mid-73 as they had a unique sound and chemistry on stage.

Why is there not much live footage of Mk2 DP even though they were together for 4 years? In the 70s surely someone must have full concerts as I've only seen 2 on TH-cam
OZZY ZIG....I would love to see the full Hofstra university show on Long Island in ny in 1973 the one that was edited down to 30 minutes for the in concert show on abc tv..but it doesn’t exist.
Same thoughts here.. Mark II at Bilzen Jazz Festival 69, Doing there thing 70 BBC, 72 Scandinavian nights Copenhagen and 73 30 min from New York. These are only three professional filmed concerts which I know at the moment. Plus Fireball, Black Night, Strange kind of woman (?) from Top of pops, highway star and No, no, no from beat club plus two tracks from a Berlin concert in 71 (into the fire, demons eye). Plus Mandrake Root London and Paris 70 and other snippets (Child in Time, Black Night...). If there are some other filmed snippets around, I don't know?!

Probably to insulate the amp tubes from vibrations from the cabinets. Remember, this is a BASS we're talking about.......

This is how I prefer to remember Deep Purple, not the middle aged shambles which got back together for money in 1984.
Paice, Lord and Glover gave it their all, Gillans voice was failing him, and Blackmore played as though he couldn't wait to get off the stage.
They never lived up to their '70's reputation for me, they always seemed as though they were chasing the pack rather than leading it.
Rod, Nick, Glenn, David and Tommy are the legends now, MK2 sold themselves for $2m a man, and for what?
One decent album and a bunch of crap follow ups including a double live album which wasn't worth the plastic it was pressed on.

Hmm, did Ian have troubles with voice that time? Even with such quality you can hear it's hard for him to get notes needed.
Why do people forget that he is an extreme vocalist and made his voice sound unnatural, of course this periodically created problems, especially if other subjective and objective factors were added to this - illness, flight, air humidity, bad mood and, in the end, a stormy night, but when he was in shape, he was unbeatable.
@@ninoorjon who forgets it?))) it is the question on this concrete performance which was just awful comparing to some others from those times.
I checked their schedule for that time (Germany Tour'1972 wasn't so tight by the way) - this performance was right after the one on the 9th February and there had to be the one next day (on the 11th), BUT which was rescheduled to the 13th of February. I believe Ian asked for some rest that day)))
