  • A momentary lapse in concentration and it is easy to get hurt, learn from my mistakes. Woodturning burls is always an interesting proposition especially elm burr. You have to adapt to the state of the wood and overcome many hidden problems. How did I get on with this one? Watch and find out

    I’m sorry you hurt your thumb making such a beautiful piece, but I am glad that you took ownership of the mistake that got you there, and used the incident as a good reminder of basic safety both to yourself and those of us in your audience. That is how you take some positive from a negative. Well done, sir.

    You have the ability to look at the finished piece and work backward. I did that in my trade and it served me well. ps, you have some balls to do the thin and odd work. The grain pattern on this piece is outrageous.

      Thanks Leigh, I started the channel on March the 16th last year and it's been an amazing journey, I have had a lot of luck along the way and I work hard to keep improving the quality (filming, lighting, editing etc). I also try hard to find interesting pieces of wood to turn, I have hundreds of standard blanks but they are not as much fun to turn and not as interesting to watch. If you ever have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. All the best and thanks again, Mike

    Wow, what a coincidence! I ran the knuckle of my thumb into a 60 grit 2"X72" belt today that was running over 1000 RPM. I thought I took it to the bone. Not much the doctor could do except clean and bandage it. I started not to go because I knew he couldn't do much for it. Moral of the story: stay focused on what we are doing when working with machinery and equipment. That's a great looking piece by the way!

    Thanks for sharing this project with us. I'm working on a very shallow piece of spalted liquidamber. It's rather hairy turning, when the piece starts to resemble an airplane propeller, especially as it whisks past, in a blur, near your hands! I've decided to finish sanding the back by hand, as my hands are more important than my pride (I don't have a drill for sanding: Brace and bit don't quite do it!)
    Well done, brave man!

Stitches on you are better than stitches on Hooch. Pull them out of him and you've got stuffing's all over the place. Ouch - those sort of small accidents are just so quick - but you'll learn from every one. The 5" rule like on bandsaws for hands would possibly still have got you tho 😧😧 I made some burl clocks a few months ago and they went very dark with the sanding sealer and polish. Yours started to go dark but ended off much lighter. Nice job Mike. When I wa sin the Rhodesian Airforce we used to call those small things like that "snake bites" - we used to get them when working with our hands inside engine bays that every bolt had a locking wire twisted to keep from coming undone and always had a small sharp end if not done correctly!!

    This one was very interesting. When I see works like this done I wonder what can be used for. I’m new to watching woodworking so I don’t know what is food safe or not. However I have to say it’s a beautiful piece and sorry about getting hurt, also don’t forget your ring guard. 😊

      Thanks for watching! It is food safe so could be used as a platter. The accident was all my fault so only myself to blame.

    Hello Mike. Now that one turned out to be a real treat! The wood is beautiful. Thank you for including your “mishap”. So much woodturning is shown in a way that makes it look a lot safer than it actually is. A timely warning to us that nasty accidents can, and do, happen. But I am glad yours wasn’t too bad and you can go off to enjoy your holiday.

    • @MikeHolton

    Gorgeous piece of burl. The still at the end shows the wonderful grain and burl "eyes" very well.
    I was expecting you to take the piece to the drill press for drilling the flat. My heart sank when you approached the piece with a large Forstner bit in a hand-held drill. You were fortunate with only a cut which required a bandaid and not stitches. Such incidents happen in a flash.
    I was hoping the wings would hold up. Good call not to make them too thin, too easy for the centrifugal forces to causes things to fly off.
    It is always amazing to see the transformation of the wood grain when a finish is applied.
    Well done as usual.
    Dave.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dave, at the present time I do not have a drill press but hopefully that will be sorted soon. I probably should have been looked at but I just nipped to the chemist at lunchtime and got some steri strips to hold it together, it was a stupid mistake but it's not my first. The platter came out nice, I would have loved to have given it more shape but the wood was just not there to do it. Amazing grain though. Until next time, Mike

    • @lv_woodturner3899
      @lv_woodturner3899 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you are able to get a drill press, but if not there are jigs which mount on the cordless drill with posts and springs etc. This can provide better control.
      Dave.
