Woodturning - I Didn't Know What This Was Until My Mom Saw It!

  • So I have had a lump of cherry on the workshop floor for a few months now. It's too small to make a vase, and as I have made so many live edge bowls/dishes I thought it would be boring to make another. So I decided to make a salt pig, however, I'm now discovering that the name "salt pig" comes from the fact that the container resembles a small pig. The design typically features a snout-like spout for dispensing the salt, and the container may be decorated with features like ears, eyes, and a curly tail. So, in short, I have created two pots that can hold Salt, but aren't really your typical Salt Pig. Also, the reason I created two was that the Spalted beech bowl was supposed to be the lid of the live-edge cherry dish, but it really didn't look right.
Maybe I need to try to make an actual Salt pig, what do you think?
The first one is made from Wild Chery and an Ornamental cherry for the lid. The second is made from Spalted Beech. Both have been finished with food-safe oil.
Let me know which one you like best!

And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Refreshing to see traditional (NO EPOXY RESIN) wood turning! These pieces have natural warmth and beauty that beg to be touched. These are some of the elements that drew me to wood turning 38 years ago. Another beauty of wood turning is we make use of yard trees and cutoffs that are typically discarded. If one has a Grandpa planted tree that came down from storm or other causes, it behooves you to find a Harry Smith (esc) wood turner near by. He or she can help keep Grandpa or Grandma alive for generations.

WOW, Harry once again you outdid yourself. The one on the left, the cherry one was obviously a true work of art and has my vote. Not to undo the one on the right that was more compact and has its own place. For size, that may be more what some folks would prefer.

I can see why you had the idea to be radical and combine the cherry and the spalted wood, but I agree with you that it was the right choice to make two projects in the end. Both are stunning. My preference is the cherry one, for several reasons: pure personal preference of colour, but also knowing the peril of the serious risk of a dangerous catch during the turning! Superb job displaying the inner beauty of the grain. Your natural talent shines through this video. Thanks Harry.

spindle roughing gouge can break off at the tang where it meets the handle if you get a catch, potentially sending the metal flying, extremely dangerous
