Laburnum and black locust are both members of the family fabaceae (beans/peas/legumes). Both have flowers with the same petal placements and their fruit are typical looking bean/pea pods. They're fairly different visually as living trees, unlike laburnum, black locust has thorns across its limbs, the leaves on them are roughly opposite eachother along the branches whereas laburnum will have clusters of 3 leaves and the main obvious difference is black locust having white flowers instead of yellow Anyway lovely work as always Mike. I always enjoying seeing your bean wood creations
As a nonturner, I'm still learning kinds of wood and some of their properties. The laburnum I've seen you turn is consistently lovely, even the small pieces like this one. I think it is nice to know that really nice pieces can be made from "scrap" or fire wood, also for those starting out that they can make nice practice pieces from inexpensive or free wood.
Many thoughts! ✨ I'm enjoying how your artistry with video is growing along with your artistry in woodworking ✨ Love the overhead camera angle that allows us to see the project almost as you do ✨ Now, please next week show us what you do with the other half, and ✨ Thank you for "chatoyance," what a fabulous new word!
Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for all the kind words, chatoyance is truly a wonderful word lol 😀. I had not planned turning the other half quite yet but I'll see if I can fit it in. All the best, Mike
Wow. I was puzzled at what you'd make if this log. I love this piece! Beautiful grain. And I love your explanations about each type of wood, what comprises areas of the wood and how this wood and another are similar. Much appreciate all this background about why the wood is as it is. Absolutely lovely! AND thanks for all these extra videos in sitting to your regular Tuesday releases. Thank you again. ❤
Thoroughly beautiful piece. As a papercrafter I’d never heard of laburnum before I met your channel but I see that it is something that grows here. Love the grain and I’m quite glad the bark came off. 😊
That really is gorgeous and that grain is stunning. It’s amazing can be produced out of quite a small piece of wood which could easily I’ve been cast aside, but you saved it forever and you still got another half to do wow.
Another beauty. Love the way you express your thought processes as you go along. Combined with teaching about things like chatoyence ( hope I spelled that correctly, probably didn’t) to the possible warping due to centrifugal forces. That took me back to my college physics classes! You always make the subject make perfect sense, while creating masterpieces. Thank you for everything you do.
Hello Mike, I indeed am fairly new to woodturning. The joy to see you creating bowls and plates in a way I could not imagine triggers my adventure side of using the lathe not just to turn "table legs and a vase". Thank you for the detailed videos and new ideas. I really appreciate the moment where you explain why you leave that wood body in the middle while turning the wings.
I couldn't tell you wether I like the bottom or top more. I'd almost want to display it upside down just for that amazing shape. Beautiful as always Mike.
A piece of commonly found wood which after a bit of turning and sanding and polishing turn into an absolutely beautiful piece of useful and practical ART. Fantastic Mike. That grain as you keep saying is totally stunning. Amazing. Cheers
Gorgeous piece! My favorite wood! I’ve used up all my pieces but the smallest. A wind storm knocked down a fir which knocked down my laburnum. We called it a golden chain due to the flowers.
Last place I lived, I planted a couple laburnum trees, two different species. They each had their own kind of beautiful yellow flowers that bloomed in great abundance. Lovely piece! A sleeping owl on top, and a laughing one on the bottom...😊
Mike, laburnum always has such a beautiful and unique grain pattern. Very nice piece, and I always like your finishes especially your homemade waxes, they always seem to have just the right amount of sheen. Great job mate! 😎
@@MikeHolton exactly, but when you get the color and the sheen just right, it magnifies the grain and brings out the brilliance of the colors in the wood.
I love ❤️ this piece! It has gorgeous grain patterns. I loved the bark on it. However, it gave a beautiful natural edge after it was lost. It was a win-win situation either way! Did I mention how much I love ❤️ the natural grains?😂
