38:25 The song that Nani sings to Lilo was written and composed by Hawaii’s last monarch and only queen as a heartfelt farewell to her people and homeland after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom during the era of Western industrialization.
Fun Fact Lilo & Stitch also had A TV Series and Crossover Special Shows with Disney Channel like Kim Possible, Recess,American Dragon Jake Long, And The Proud Family
Nanis story gets even sadder when you realize she was on track to be a professional surfer, as demonstrated by all the medals in her room and her skill on the beach.
as a kid i was like "oh lilo is quirky, she's so cool" now that i know the story a lot more i can appreciate her reasoning a lot more. She doesn't feed the fish because good weather is good, bad weather is bad, she feeds the fish every single week because on the one week she didn't feed him there was a huge storm that caused that car accident that killed her parents (well idk if she's blaming herself, it's vague as to how long she's been doing it but it's clear she's trying to prevent the issue happening again) A lot of the drama comes from miscommunication of stuff the characters think of as obvious.
yes this is something i never noticed growing up and its one of my favorite movies…i also saw someone point out that she seems autistic which makes a lot of sense…she has weird interests, she’s obsessive about the interests, she has trouble making friends and socializing, she’s violent which can be the case with autistic people/children, plus a lot of other stuff…but it seems to me that she recognized a pattern of the one time she didn’t bring the sandwich to pudge that it caused a storm (which is the pattern recognition of autism)
This film holds a part of my soul. It was supposed to be released in September 2001, they had to re-animate some of the end scenes. I think having grown up in NYC and having only been twelve when it finally came out in 2002- it created a beautiful comfort touchstone in a crazy world.
White leis represent love. It calming him down is meant to show how he's never been shown love before, and from this point on, he starts to change for the better.
I love that Mr Bubbles isn't an evil CPS villain in this. He is legit just doing his job, and honestly Nani and Lilo, despite doing her best, had real problems
*That speech Stitch gives the Grand Councilwoman gets me every time: "This is my family. I found it all....on .... my own. It's little and broken, but still good. (looks back at Nani and Lilo) Yeah....still good."* 🥺😭 *Also, to answer a question on how David "spit" fire that I've seen a few times in other reactions: Fire dancers drink (but most importantly, don't swallow) either straight alcohol, kerosene or paraffin lamp oil from a bottle and spit it out onto the flame to make it erupt, so that's most likely what he used.*
Just wanted to come here and say that I've been watching your reactions for a while now, and you just seem like the sweetest people. I love how thoughtful you guys are with everything you watch.
It’s heart wrenching when you realize Sandwich day is so important because her parents died from a storm and Pudge controls the weather so her feeding him a sandwich is her way of appeasing him. When the girl calls her crazy for thinking that touches a huge nerve for her.
I worked on the DVD for this. My previous company split the special features with another company. I was a production assistant, but was given the title Associate Producer for this project, and then Disney decided to have this be the first DVD that only the vompany names were credited. We created a 2 disc set, but only a 1 disc was released. Years later, they released the full 2 disc set. Neither company was credited. The red spaceship he escaped in was inspired by a Shelby Cobra.
@samandmariachannel It was more disappointing than anything. As for the later 2 disc version, I had long left the company by then, though I wondered how my old boss felt about it. Thanks though.
14:31 in the north american version, instead of a washer and dryer, its a washer and a table and lilo is hiding behind a pizza box under the table, because kids might imitate it and play in dryers/d!e
@brynniefresh9746 same here, my VHS copy had the washer and dryer. It was on streaming services, I guess only in the United States, that it changed to the pizza box.
@@brynniefresh9746 I saw the movie in theaters when it first came out and it was definitely a dryer, and when I watched the VHS (yep, I'm old people lol) it was still a dryer, but when I watched the movie later when it aired on Disney Channel, it just cut out the scene entirely. It is funny that Sam mentioned a "watercolour style". That is because all the backgrounds, at least once we get to Hawaii, are done in watercolour. That is, in my opinion, what gives this movie its very particular style, and that cozy feeling. It is really nice watching the documentaries on this film because even though thye weren't from Hawaii the creators really wanted the movie to be respectful to the island's cultre. all the dances were coreographed by acutual hula dancers and they watched them perfom and recorded their performances so they could recreate them later. Also the song that Nani sings to Lilo when she is being taken away by social services is the last song that the queen of Hawaii sang when the island was colonized so it is a very culturally relevant piece of Hawaiian history and makes the scene even sadder. One last thing for Lilo it is very important that Patch gets his sandwitch becuase their parents died in a really big storm so she wants him to always make it be nice sunny weather. I adore this film and it is one of my chilhood faves, it is so heartfel and although i dont have a sister myslef the relationship between Lilo and Nani is so beatiful and really nicely portrayed with more nuance that you expect for a children's film. Lastly as part of the weird child comitee I find Lilo really relatable as an outcast character with very weird interests.
I LOVED Relic Hunter!! I watched it when on tv when I was young. So far I still haven’t met anyone else who ever even heard of it 😊 Thank you Maria! That moment just made my day

The scene with the spaceship chase through the city was actually redone after the movie was already made. Originally they hijack a plane and chase down Gantu though the city. I have a question. Did they change the pizza box thing? When Lilo was hiding in a dryer, Disney plus decided to change the dryer door to a pizza box to discourage kids from going in there. It is so ridiculous. So it was funnier seeing your version with the actual dryer door again.
What's sad about Nanis luau job is that this is actually what Hawaiians had to do when the western culture took over. A luau was a sacred practice until the westerners took the concept and had the audacity to change it into a time to stuff your face with food and put on grass skirts and coconut bras and dance the hula. And when they had these events, they didn't even let actual Hawaiian people in, so to make money to take care of themselves, the Hawaiians were hired to work in these disgraceful events to clean up after the tourists like slaves only to make less than a buck.

Instead she decided to bring a convicted and unrepentant criminal out of jail, assigning an unarmed wildlife biologist as his chaperone, and being upset that the two of them were unable to recapture a creature literally designed to give militaries the galaxy over a hard time. And she gave them, like, a max of 72 hours. And remember: she knows there's sentient creatures on this planet, she had been here before, thirty years prior to work with Agent Bubbles. And then Gantu gets there, all 20ft/6 tons of him, and not only does he initially capture Stitch, but with only one potential casualty/bycatch, that by all accounts could have been rereleased afterwards. And she has the audacity to be mad. Gantu did a precision job with far fewer casualties than anything she could have done.
And then to leave a lawful, abiding citizen of the Galactic Federation like Pleakley on Earth for exile is a wild decision for doing a job he was not remotely trained to do.
I like to imaging that, if we don't take the show as canon, that there was a line of whatever the Galactic Federation has in place of JAGs to take both Pleakley and Gantu's cases against the High Council.

Haha glad we did watch this version too 😄 - Maria
What's sad about Nanis luau job is that this is actually what Hawaiians had to do when the western culture took over.
A luau was a sacred practice until the westerners took the concept and had the audacity to change it into a time to stuff your face with food and put on grass skirts and coconut bras and dance the hula.
And when they had these events, they didn't even let actual Hawaiian people in, so to make money to take care of themselves, the Hawaiians were hired to work in these disgraceful events to clean up after the tourists like slaves only to make less than a buck.
