I owned a 90 CRX Si from 96 to 2010. I bought the car with 80K and it left me with 225K. Here are some of the repair and maintenance items not mentioned here. 1. Alternator, distributor and starter problems. I went through 3 or 4 alternators in the time I owned the car. And at least one distributor and one starter. A bad alternator also caused the main fuse to fail on the interstate one night. NOT fun to have your car just die at 75+ on an interstate. 2. Stock brakes are too small for hard driving and tend to retain too much heat under heavy use and warp. If you upgrade your wheel size do yourself a favor and upgrade your brakes as well. 3. Not only can the sunroof leak but the track can get gummed up with debris and grit and cause the sunroof to get stuck or the motor to fail. 4. Don't let any mechanic mess with your manual transmission or tell you it needs to be serviced unless they specialize in Honda transmission repair. the manual transmission uses lubricate that is far lighter viscosity than the majority of transmissions and if the right fluid is not put in it can cause premature transmission wear. 5. Make sure your mechanic let's the engine cool enough before replacing the timing belt. If he doesn't the belt will be loose and it will cause premature failure of the timing belt. 6. Look for signs of oil consumption. If the previous owner hasn't changed the oil on a regular basis it can cause premature failure of the piston rings resulting in blowby and excessive oil consumption. 7. The OEM radiator is made out of plastic and can fail prematurely. Aftermarket metal radiators are available and far more durable. 9. Expect normal Honda paint fade or clear coat peel. 10. These cars were built before ACs used R134 refrigerant and used R12 instead. R12 hasn't been manufactured since the early 90s and is now extremely expensive if it's available at all. Converting your AC system to R134 is expensive and requires replacement of most of the AC system. The car is reliable as hell even with the list above. But the biggest problems is that many of the examples left are beat to shit, heavily modified or both. Engine swaps for this car are extremely common as are suspension modifications. The B16 VTEC is the most common engine swap but the JDM ZC DOHC non VTEC 1.6 (similar but not identical to the first gen Integra engine), various version of the B18 found in the second gen Integra(both VTEC and non VTEC) and even the B17, B20 and rarer engines might be found in a CRX. Some of these swaps are extremely well done and clean. Some of them are garbage. Either way you'd better be able to do your own repair work or have a mechanic lined up that is well versed in working on Honda hybrid engines if you buy a swapped CRX. It's common to see HF and DX cars with engine swaps because they had a lower curb weight than the Si models and were generally not driven as hard by their original owners as the Si models. The JDM ZC non VTEC is a straight swap using all of the same motor mounts which will bolt right up to the original manual transmission found in the SI. The B series engines require transmission swap as well as engine mount modifications. After my original engine snapped it's timing belt on the highway I replaced it with a ZC engine. I couldn't afford the added cost of a B series swap. If you find a US spec Si with the original engine it's rated at 108HP. HP ratings for various common swaps were as follows. JDM DOHC non VTEC ZC was rated approximately 130 HP (the similar engine found in the first gen Integra was 118HP) B16 DOHC VTEC were generally rated at 150-185 HP depending on the exact engine chosen. The most commonly found swaps will be rated at 160HP B18C DOCH VTEC found in the type Integra Type R rated at 197 HP. This swap is generally considered the holy grail of engine swaps for this car. In fact the first front wheel drive car to break the 9 second quarter mile was a B18C powered CRX.
The most popular rare option from the factory is power steering. All the US spec version of the car came without power steering because of the cars light weight but some of the Canadian spec cars included power steering and it's my understanding that power steering is an easy retrofit for a car that doesn't have it. Because the car is extremely light it's really only an issue if you plan on doing a lot of parking lot driving because anything faster than that it's not needed and would even been detrimental to the driving experience. Fog lights weren't very common because the cars regular headlights were more than sufficient for most situations. I regularly had people comment on how bright mine were even with out HID or LED bulbs installed. The US spec SI came in 5 colors. The 88-89 cars came in Polar White, Flint Black, Rio Red and Barbados Yellow and the 90-91 cars came in Polar White, Flint Black, Rio Red and Tahitian Green. Mine was Rio Red. There were additional color options on the DX and HF. All Si models sold in the US came with the power sunroom but the HF and DX did not. Barbados Yellow and Tahitian Green were only ever offered as a color choice on the Si trim and not the HF or DX in the US market. The DX trim was the only one that offered an automatic transmission from the factory, the HF and Si were both 5 speed manual only. The Si manual was geared for acceleration the HF was geared for fuel economy. the 88-89 Si trim level cars had rear drum brakes but the 90-91 Si trim models had 4 wheel disk brakes. All of the US spec cars were two seaters, but some other markets had a rear seat (it was practically unusable by anybody other than a toddler). An HF or DX model is about 200 lbs lighter than an Si model primarily because of the sunroof that was exclusive to the Si. The 1989-91 Civic rode on the same platform but with 10 inches added to the wheel base. The US Spec Civic Si used the same powertrain as the US Spec CRX Si and was approximately the same weight (maybe 100-200lbs heavier) but had an actual usable backseat. 90-91 Civic Si models are even more rare today than the CRX is though. This was the second of three Hondas I owned (82 Accord and a 92 Legend were the other two) and of all the cars I ever owned this is the one I miss the most and the one I wish I hadn't had to sell.
I want a CRX Si or maybe even an SIR but would it matter if i were to get a base model CRX, put the bronze glass on the base model that comes from the SIR and claim it as an SI? Obviously i would swap the engine to a B or K series but i just wanna know what’s your guys opinion on that because i can find good condition base models for around $3500 but every Si i found whether good or bad condition range from $8k-15k
they are Very rare in Montreal Canada now ... i own and drive one for 7 years now ... i only saw 3 on the road ... that crazy people dont realise how rare these came now
Looking at 89 Crx automatic for 600 bucks. 160k miles and the hatch needs new hinges and interior work but for 600 or less I’m going to try and save it and make it stick shift on a budget
i put aluminum wheels on mine and it was night and day difference for the no power steering. felt like you didnt need it after the light weight wheel swap

Only buy one when your handy and can fixed them yourself. Because car is awsome, but it will eat driving shafts and rust is a big thing. I wrenched a lot on mine. But still love the driving experience in that car!
If I could do it again I would save my money and get a bad ass bass boat with some sick ass setups. As a kid sure buy one and race the fuck out of it and get tons of tickets. As an adult keep one for slow ass restore project.
Goodluck don’t give up just keep trying your best option is to find an older person who has one they keep them stock and probobly aren’t aware of the prices going up on them
I see you are in a sunny climate my man. The type 2 does almost not excist here anymore. I live in the north of Europe.. They like to rust. You probably heard of this from the eas of the US, salting the roads, rain. And they where made from 1988 last one sold was 1992 (on paper) in the Netherlands. That is pretty old for a car😉. Then again: Try finding a golf mark 2 gti 16v even the Germans have scrapped them out of existence.
I think that's a deal but I don't see why people complain about a price of a nice car that's getting harder and even rare to see you want the value of this car to get higher.

JDM DOHC non VTEC ZC was rated approximately 130 HP (the similar engine found in the first gen Integra was 118HP)
B16 DOHC VTEC were generally rated at 150-185 HP depending on the exact engine chosen. The most commonly found swaps will be rated at 160HP
B18C DOCH VTEC found in the type Integra Type R rated at 197 HP.
Yeah they are getting expensive here in AZ clean one going from 5-6000 , and
beat up around 2000-3500
Yikes man it’s crazy out there seems like they pretty much got expensive everywhere
@@ambidexstress yeah they are hard to find parts or they are on the little pricey side
they are Very rare in Montreal Canada now ... i own and drive one for 7 years now ... i only saw 3 on the road ... that crazy people dont realise how rare these came now
I just got my hands on a decent one and damn I'm excited to have one finally
Hell yeah I’d love to see it
Looking at 89 Crx automatic for 600 bucks. 160k miles and the hatch needs new hinges and interior work but for 600 or less I’m going to try and save it and make it stick shift on a budget
i put aluminum wheels on mine and it was night and day difference for the no power steering. felt like you didnt need it after the light weight wheel swap
I'm getting one still. My goal is to get the crx mabe this year or next year idk
You can do it trust me just plan it out so you know exactly when the right time to get it is
Took me a year to find the right CRX. Have the cash ready and be ready to pull the trigger...clean ones sell in a matter of hours.
Not a safe car in a rear end collision .. From experience
Im getting one that is basically brand new for $800 stock
Nice paint job!
My guy gotta say this video was so well done. Everything you said made so much sense made me want to go get one now. We have a 04 Element I think it has the K24A engine. I want to get more power out of it for going up hills. Any advice you can share ? 🙏
Thanks a lot man and the easiest way is throw a turbo kit on it run on 8 psi and you can do that all day
@@ambidexstress I've been looking at some turbo kits. I'm about 80% ready to pull the triage and buy one. Any certain brands you think I should check out ? When my wife and I go on long trips and use our car has our mirco camper and live out of it while we travel. We definitely need some extra boost. The car is very heavy and all the extra things we have in it doesn't help lol
Honestly eBay is fine and those k series motors can handle boost all day you could Probobly even go as far at boosting up to 350hp on 91 pump no problem
@@ambidexstress I'm gonna have to look into it. I've been looking at so many different ones getting overwhelmed lol. Thanks for the tips bro 👍
Got to get my rex on the road. thanks for the video.
Good to hear man enjoy your Crx🙌🏼 thanks for watching
I'll be running the same B series, hope it roars the same 🤘
I'm debating on buying one on offerup for 1900 with 181,000 miles on it stock rims and clean body! What's your opinion...?? I'm debating! This video was dope!
I might be picking one up tomorrow morning..... I live in Oregon and the car is originally from Cali. Should I worry about rust, if so where?
By the way, Nice car and thanks for the video!
No if that’s that case you should be fine just make sure the vin on the dashboard matches the vin on the registration and thank you I hope it goes good for you feel free to hit me up on ig if you need to @ambidexstress and update me I’d like to know if it worked out for you😎
i paid 1400 for my 90 base model crx that the previous owner had already done a b20b swap to 2 and a half years ago. since then ive done wheels tires suspension full exhaust and a skunk 2 intake and 70mm tb. Now im in the process of collecting parts so that i can go for 300-350 hp
I love that paint color do you know what it’s called?
Only buy one when your handy and can fixed them yourself. Because car is awsome, but it will eat driving shafts and rust is a big thing. I wrenched a lot on mine. But still love the driving experience in that car!
You did get lucky. It looks in decent condition and that price is right. Was that a Mugen engine cover?
I have a crx si for sale in California. It is all stock except for the intake.
Rare honda need to stay at 8k import Japan car more lime 10k
That's a reasonable price for a clean rare CRX or EF easy 8k
Too, too clean!
I just picked up a 90 CRX this evening...too many unfinished projects! About to get on it!
Hate to say it, I love my CRX but they are really overpriced. Better to go eg or Integra. They are better equipped and not a death trap.
Another thing CRX parts are priceyyyyyy.
I agree man if I couldent find a crx I’d go for an eg but I’m fortunate to have the Crx at the moment
How’s your exterior in such great condition?!
Do you recommend the crx as a first car ?
What up bro! it’s Rick I had the black Crx si and black evo. Nice to see u still have your Rex, look super clean still. Hit me up.
Oh dam that’s crazy haha you got an Instagram?
If I could do it again I would save my money and get a bad ass bass boat with some sick ass setups. As a kid sure buy one and race the fuck out of it and get tons of tickets. As an adult keep one for slow ass restore project.
Haha I see what your saying I mean you never know I might end restoring one later on in life that would be fun👌🏼
I thought the bonnet latches were coming off, but is it raised to fit the B-series engine ? :D
Looks like the parking structure to my favorite gym
Haha maybe
Crx and hatchbacks are hard to come across and the prices are up the roof I been looking for a hatchback for so long lol
Goodluck don’t give up just keep trying your best option is to find an older person who has one they keep them stock and probobly aren’t aware of the prices going up on them
why is the hood popped open from the windshield side
What’s the collision place you got the hood at?
I’ve seeing in Pick n Pull. People are sending to the junk yard damn
ayo i got a HF no engine or anything but im working on building it 😌
Nice what you plan on putting in it
Dude I’m 16 I’m saving up for one I found on Facebook marketplace for 1500$
Get it bro you can make it happen!
Where do you find weatherstripping for this car?
I have one 89 crx si red for 4k
I just pick up 90 crx si for 1500
Just got mine 0 regrets
Which is more rare.. SI/HF?
Should I restore the engine of my crx and then turbo it? Is the d15 😅
If your gonna go the single cam turbo route I’d say drop a d16 bottom end on it with d15 vtec head and with a turbo you’ll be killing it bro😎
There’s a crx for 1,000 the rear window broken and there’s a bit rust on the quarter panel should I buy it?
Wheel size
I had one and got it for $1800 and that was here in El Paso. I like EF hatchbacks better
Just bought an 88 crx hf. 1708 lbs on the scale and it has a 1.5litre vtec swap
I'm on my 11th crx . Love um
Are those 205 50s
Did you have to BAR the car to register it? since it has a different engine.
No I didn’t have to bar it at all I’m in California idk If it’s like that everywhere tho
@@ambidexstress I'm in cali too, I have a 91 SI with a B18a1, I just thought since its not the original engine, you had to bar it. I guess all I gotta do is pass the smog test and ill be straight. thanks for the 411.
@@anthoneed yeah passing smog is a pain but it can be done
Wait... The american model has AC?
Isn’t the steering 4.2 lock to lock? Come on! So much about this car was brilliant - especially in contrast to today’s cars. Very pure driving experience.
color code ?
It’s a custom grey but the closest I’d say to that is Moon Rock Metallic NH-676M not too far off from my color
i have the 1991 base model and it makes 108 hp 🤨
the cleanest crx i know
Bro I’m freakin flattered thank you so much!
I picked up a crx for 150 that runs. doesnt have too much rust. its a 91, its rough but not undriveable. was that a good investment?
I mean that’s up to you If your happy with it then that’s what really matters🙌🏼
Cap
Where did you get the mugen engine?
It’s just a valve cover they make
@@ambidexstress ok thank you❤️
