- Using stencils in mixed media paper painting is a fantastic (and easy) way to get your creative juices going.
With stencils you can make layer after layer of pattern and depth. It puts a whole new spin on your artistic energy.
In this video, I show you some ways in which I use stencils when I’m hand painting papers.
I am also using some acrylic mediums and paints that are absolutely luscious, as well as compounds you can find in any hardware store. Wait until you see what we do with them!
Using a stencil is a great way to explore new ideas in your art.

I'd love to know the type of "book" you're using to keep your stencils organized. Mine are all over the place!

I love the collage with the Pan Pastel rice paper! Did you glue it down the size where you applied the pastel and it shows through the rice paper? Or after fixing it on the Gel Plate, did you glue it face up?

So inspirational! I have so many stencils and I hardly ever use them.
How do you clean the stencils after you use heavier mediums on them? Especially the ones with lots of fussy cutting?
Also, love the stencil books…did you just make that yourself with plastic dividers? Awesome!
Hi Robin - great questions! The stencil book is manufactured and the one I use is listed in the supply section of the description, but you could certainly make your own. As for cleaning the heavier mediums, I usually lay pieces of newsprint on top of the medium and roll out with a brayer. I do that until there is almost nothing left on the stencil. Then I place the stencil in a pan with water and Murphy's Oil Soap and let it soak for at least one day, but usually a week. Then I *_gently_* wipe any residue off and rinse. Hope that helps. 🥰

RE: the dry wall compounds, could you paint gesso over it to make it less absorbent?
Hi Deann! I haven't tried that, but I bet you're right. Gesso would probably seal it nicely. 😀
I just discovered you the other day and love your paper painting techniques. I was wondering how you fix your papers when using pan pastels, graphite or charcoal on the papers that would smear or run when covering them with medium. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful ideas!
Hey Sassy, great question. Sometimes I use Krylon's Workable Fixitif (but only outdoors). Other times I spread a thin layer of clear matte medium on a gel plate and gently press the piece art side down on the plate. It transfers the medium without smudging the work. Hope that helps 😀
@PaintedPaperStudio Do you wait for the medium to dry before removing the plate?
@@AtomicElf1 No, I remove the paper off the plate right away and then put it somewhere safe to dry. You bring up an interesting idea though - obviously, I'm going to have to experiment 😂
Love all your v. Videos can I ask where you purchased the badger brush? I can only find shaving brushes
Hi Sharon - I bought this badger brush about 20 years ago at a small local art store. I just looked it up and found a very similar on at Jerry's Artarama, but holy cow!!! It is very expensive now. A smaller one will work just as well (they have them), but actually, a badger shaving will work too. With either brush, just be sure to use the lightest possible pressure when blending. Also make sure to wash your brush when done for the day - this is not the brush to leave in a cup of water. 💜

I have cut my own, but I'm not very good at it 😂 My favorite suppliers are Joggles, PM Artist Studios, Stencil Girl, and a bunch of Etsy stencil makers. 💜

Thank you Chapman! I found the paper on Amazon - it's called Yasutomo Hanshi Paper 9x12 size. I want to warn you though - it is very very delicate. There are probably better rice paper options.

Do you have a special space for drying ?
I do, I actually have several spaces for drying. I find that if you can hang the paper (like on a pant hanger), you can get the most drying space for your work. I'll work on creating a video about this. 😀
