Level Up Your Mixed Media Art Skills | Gelli Printing

- Gelli Printing is what this week’s - Paint Paper With Me - session is all about.
I’m spending our time together just creating gel print after gelli print - making a stash of background papers for mixed media collage, journal art and whatever suits my mood.
I think Gelli printing is one of the fastest (and easiest) ways to build a collection of painted papers.
I hope you’ll join me live (I’ll be taking questions in the chat), but if you can't, you can always ask questions in the comments - I’ll be sure to answer them.

⭐Best Viewing Experience for YOU ⭐
Every creative person has different needs. Here are the different ways to enjoy these videos.
- Some enjoy hearing me explain my process. If that’s you, make sure your volume is on.
- Others prefer to read my process through the closed caption subtitles. If that’s you, turn on the CC at the bottom right of the video.
- Some don’t want to hear my voice at all (that’s ok 😀). If that’s you, turn the volume off and watch.
I have had every video electronically translated through close captioned subtitles into 12 different languages to be able to reach and connect with as many people as possible. If your language is not represented, please let me know.

Thank you Jackie! I’m learning so much! Nothing beats watching your joy! A perfect way to learn!!!🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆♥️Anita
What a lovely thing to say - thank you Anita!
You might want to try brown packaging paper for your offloads, they make great collage pieces 😊
Oh i love The penguins😍 they are so cute 🥰 👏 so inspiring 👏
The penguins were SO fun! 🥰
I had a thought about the pulls you were not excited about. They can be used as "animal skins --theme--tigers, jungle flora, and just an adventure like a safari! Thanks for the great enthusiastic lessons!
Great idea Maureen, also a great way to make "lemonade" from thos pulls. Thank you for watching 🥰
OMG! I love Payne's Grey! It reminds me of the shade of the indigo dye used in Japanese textiles (the actual name escape me). Just beautiful
It truly is one of my favorite colors!
Love the pulls❤ thank you
Thanks!
Anita, I appreciate you and your generosity. Thank you very much. 🥰
I bought my gel plate on Amazon! I had already bought tea bag paper and the
One you recommended wet tissue paper. The name brand you mentioned
Anita
I don't know how I got to your channel but you had me at mark making!! I've been binge watching you instead of Netflix!!
Does acrylic fluid paint work for collage? i could watch and listen to you all day long!
Hi Annette - what a fabulous comment to wake up to! Thank you so much for being here, and I am thrilled that the videos are connecting with you 🥰. Yes, fluid acrylics do work in collage, however, if the item you are trying to apply is chunky, uneven or heavy, I would use a thicker gel medium. 👍🏼
❤
Hi Jackie - what a fun session! I learned a lot as usual. I’m curious if you ever use just matte/gloss medium to pull paint that dried before you got to a pull. Thank you! ❤
Hi BB! I have, but I have had mixed results. This would be a great topic for an upcoming video. Stay tuned 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio wow - that was quick! Thank you! I am not getting reliable result with this and thought I was doing something wrong. I will be on the lookout! Have a great rest of your evening!! ❤️
Your third Vandyke Brown squiggly print 😁 (in fact all of your squiggly brown prints) are very Steampunkish Jackie! Love them (although I'm not a huge fan of browns).
What a cool observation Sandra, thank you!
Loved seeing how you picked up and moved the stencil around the plate to create texture. I have a lot of smaller texture and text type stencils that I would like to use but I wasn't sure how to use them on a plate that was larger than the stencils but now I know :-). Thank you!
Question- is it possible to cut away the frame/border of a stencil to make it more like a mask? Or can you get as interesting effects with stencils as with masks?
Robin, you absolutely could cut away the borders of a stencil if you only want to use it as a mask. I think both stencils and masks make incredible textures! 💜
I am enjoying getting to know you through your work here on youtube! Two observations that might help your videos--put some kind of anti-skid material under your plate so it doesn't move around so much and, when pulling a large piece of paper from the plate, try pulling it at a slight angle (like when you remove tape that you have used to mask on a wall) and it will come away a bit easier (not full-proof but it helps). I really like the way you encourage playfulness in your demos. Not being afraid to make mistakes is a good way to learn--especially for beginners, but more experienced people can benefit from it too! Continued good luck with your channel!
Thank you for your well wishes and observations Lori, I really appreciate you 💜
Beautiful prints❤
Thank you, and thank you for watching 🥰
What is your gel plate sitting on? I like the way it holds and is clear? Total newbie here. Most of my supplies are still in cellophane! I am going to try working off the gel plate and pulling a print with what's left. THANKS for the inspiration.
Hi Myrna! Yes, that is a sheet of plexiglass, and it makes pulling prints so easy because it provides leverage. It's amazing how much suction there can be between the paper, the paint, and the gel plate! 🥰
Ok that's what I meant😂😂holding the gelli plate not the hello plate 😂😂
Loving your videos and your work ❤😊thanks for sharing 😮
Thank you, Miss Dee - I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment on the video. I'm so glad you're here. 🥰
Hi Thank you for sharing. I am a beginner of mix media/collage paper. Which Gelli kit should I get started? I do oil painting with abstract background on canvas and oil painting papers. Thank you.
Hi Nick, thank you for watching. If you are just starting with a gel plate, I would start with a smaller plate - maybe a 5x7" or 8x10" plate. Other than that, just make sure you have a brayer, some paper and a couple of colors to use. I don't work with oils, so I haven't experimented with them on the plate yet, but there are few other artists on TH-cam who have created gel prints using oils and oil sticks. Good luck with it, and I hope you enjoy gel printing as much as I do. 🤗
Do these Pre ieres get posted after the event? I see them advertised but I haven't noticed them as regular videos to watch.
Hi Margaret - yes, they post as regular videos shortly after the live event ends. You can find my past live Q&A's here th-cam.com/play/PLgIXaAju7by2aeRzgYpwICAzPLfllzqer.html
Hi, just wondering what is the frame you are using to hold the hello plate? ❤
Great video!! Do you sell your work through a gallery?
Thank you Tracy. No, I do not sell through galleries. Every once in a while I share my available works with my mailing list. Sometimes it's hard to part with them 🥰
Just curious how large is the biggest gel plate you have?
Hi Jan - my biggest plate is 16" x 20" 🥰
Do you use newsprint in your work? When I think of it, all I think about is all the yellowing/browning pads that I have. Seems very unstable
Hi Sue - yes, I use newsprint sometimes...a lot, actually 😀. I don't worry about it yellowing or even holding up when I use it. When I choose newsprint as my paper choice, I'm usually not going to use it in a work that I want to be archival quality. But for playing, experimenting, and the price, nothing beats newsprint.
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thanks. I love your channel and you sense of experimentation. What I like to call a "pioneer"!
