Develop your own artistic style - acrylic painting - 5 key steps

  • Cultivate Your Own Artistic Voice in 5 steps
Many artists, drawn to acrylic painting or abstract art, struggle to find their own unique style. They spend hours searching for inspiration online, feeling overwhelmed by the vast array of artistic approaches. But what if the answer isn't out there, but within you?
This is the message The Old Guy (artist Henrik Skorá) delivers in this encouraging video.
Instead of desperately hunting for a style, you should focus on cultivating the artistic style you already possess. It's a personal journey, and this video offers a 5-step approach to guide you:
    1. Paint as much as possible. Consistent practice is the cornerstone of artistic development. Think of it as an artistic marathon, not a sprint. Don't overthink every stroke. Trust your gut and paint freely. This initial effort becomes stepping stones in your artistic evolution, helping you discover your natural preferences for subjects, colors, and techniques. Acrylic painting, with its vibrant colors and fast-drying nature, is a great medium to experiment with.
    2. Master the Craft: This involves learning the fundamentals of composition, which helps arrange elements in a visually pleasing way. Understanding color theory, how colors interact and mix, unlocks a vast palette of possibilities. Additionally, exploring various painting techniques, like those used in abstract art, expands your artistic toolkit.
    3. Develop your process: Every artist develops a personal approach to their work, a painting process that hugely influences their style. Some say that your process is your style. Experiment until you find a workflow that feels natural for you. Basically you must develop a plan on how to approach the painting process in practice.
    4. Seek Inspiration: You can do this in many ways.
(I made a video on this: • 4 ways to get ideas fo... )
Study the work of other artists, both within acrylic painting and other styles. Let their work inspire you, but avoid simply copying it. Instead, identify elements you admire and incorporate them into your own work, creating a unique blend of influences.
    5. Courage: Mistakes are inevitable, and they are valuable learning experiences. Don't get discouraged by a misstep - view it as an opportunity to refine your skills. As you gain experience, these mistakes will become less frequent.

Remember, your artistic style is a unique fingerprint, a combination of your personality, the choices you make in your artwork, and your life experiences. It will naturally evolve over time as you refine your skills and explore new ideas. Focus on enjoying the process of discovery and cultivating your artistic voice.
With dedication and these helpful steps, you'll be well on your way to developing a distinctive style that reflects you, and your unique artistic vision.

Thank you so much. You have confirmed everything I have been thinking over the past few months. For years I wouldn't paint flowers for very much the same reasons you gave in the video. A couple of months ago, inspired by a family members flowers I decided to paint them and haven't stopped since. They are such a joyful subject. I am at the stage where my main desire is to make the painting i am working on better. I am learning lots and starting to develop my own process. Most of all I am loving painting (most of the time anyway!!!!) Gradually I am starting to see my own style emerge - to other artists out there keep painting and do be brave - good things will happen!

I needed to see this. Someone asked me, “where do you get your ideas to paint?”. I said, I look at other art and pictures from the internet and that inspires me to paint something. It is like I guess, making music. The notes are there and everyone uses them. You just make your own song.

Thank you for your beautifully spoken encouragement. I too love your work but constantly struggle with my own. After taking 2 back to back Online courses on how to find my Joy I found myself doubting everything I try to create. I am not sure what happened but since those courses I have extreme difficulty in deciding what to create. I have been all over the map with mediums and substrates. I lost my focus but thankfully not my desire. Your videos are helping me through this difficult time. Thank you, from Surrey, BC, Canada❤

Thank you my dearest Old Guy. Your tutorial as always is very inspiring. I truly treasure your advice. I hope you keep coming to my screen bringing all the knowledge and guidance to me as an emerging artist who is still finding my style. I often have that kind of question when I was inspired by another artist’s work ‘inspired by or copying?’ Your video helped me rethink my approach 🙏💖🌻

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi. Thank you, you are welcome. Regarding copying, I try to go for what is fun, and it is not fun for me to paint exactly like some one else. Take the inspirational part an make it your own ... that can be fun.
      God luck!

Wonderful advice - thank you! I mentioned Van Goghs flower paintings in another comment but also coming to mind are the incredible works of Georgia O’Keeffe Claude Monet and Matisse and the sculptures of Kusuma - so many wonderful ways to depict flowers

      Hi. You are so right.
I think that Monet's success, in the long run, has made it a little bit harder for us to paint flowers. They became almost too popular (?)

Thank you so much for this timely advice. As a new painter, I have not yet figured out my style. I love very geometric designs with bold colors, but I also love softer, more organic designs so I have tried both. It's a mood thing, I think. I enjoy switching it up and experimenting. Keep the videos coming!❤

Thank you for your video your work is beautiful and interesting…everything you say is true my biggest hurdle is probably the last one courage… having had a very strict father who always wanted me to be perfect in school and music. I developed a fear of not ever being good enough. Even when other people say that is not true.
Somehow it has stifled me… I’ve started doing mixed media as a way to loosen up and I’m now enjoying it and not worried about making mistakes as I’m trying to see each process as a way to play..🙏💕

      Hi.
I believe that we are all created by the circumstances we grew up in and our past. But we can change things ... develop our personality
I often think that there can be no one who knows better what goes on inside my head, than myself. And this is what you paint: What goes on inside than head.
If someone who doesn't like it, it's OK ... at least it's honest. They have to find something they like ... somewhere else. So you must go on painting and create. Good luck.
