Inspired Problem Solving While Hand Painting Paper

- Problem solving while hand painting paper is a constant activity when creating art. Every stroke of the brush is another problem solved or an opportunity to solve a new problem. And this is why I think learning how to develop this skill is so important.
In this video, I find myself in a real jam - I get to a certain point while hand-painting this paper, and I do not love what I am creating. Watch and see how I try to solve this problem and decide how you would solve it if you were in my studio.
During the video, I give you the opportunity to tell me if you think the painting is done or if I should finish it next week LIVE on TH-cam.
You can let me know in the comments.

Rules? There are no rules...😁😄 just kidding Jackie 😉
* wink * * wink *@@sandrafisherhayes3219
It's like flying over a field of beautiful flowers. So much fun!
The tissue paper pull is great!
Thank you very much! 🥰
For myself, I believe that when I stay with my discomfort, that's when I'm learning on many levels. Keep on keepin' on!
I love your style, Jackie.
Thank you Lolly - discomfort is a great teacher...if you can stay with it. 😉 🥰
What a fun piece! It’s giving me Monet’s water lilies vibes.
I felt that too, TR - but when I continued it, it went in another direction, entirely. Thank you so much for watching. 🥰
I think it's finished. I love it!
Keep going. It's not quite there, but I really like all the colorful marks making the piece look like a flower garden.
I agree, not quite there, but I'm happy that it made the turn to something I'm liking better. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment 🥰
You saved it, and it is done to my eyes.
Thank you Kris - Sometimes, for me, it's so hard to know. 🥰
Jackie, just watching your video on problem sloving while painting. You just said you did not especially like where it was going and sometimes the best thing is just to put it away & go back to it later to see how you feel. That reminded me of a recent experience I had with looking back over some pieces I had done and photograped awhile ago. I was surprised at how much I like them in reflection.
LucyLee - distance sometimes really does make the heart fonder. I love the sense of excitement when I come back to a piece that I gave up on. 🥰
Hi, let’s keep going. Love the colors.
Thank you, Brenda! 🥰
I love watching you explore and the palette is beautiful. I think you should continue with another layer. Then again, I never no when to stop in my own work. Excited to see where it goes! 😍
Thank you, Trina! 🥰
Please make a fine print copy before you decide to go on. It is playful and draws me in. I'd say it's done but I feel that its final glory is begging to be discovered. I'll be watching next week as the mystery is uncovered. ~Terri 😊
I sure wish I had! Next time I'll be sure to do just that 🥰
I would be using leaf stencils and have them coming in from the outside edges, framing the petals/flowers making them the focal point in the middle. If you don't do this, I think I will have to, just to see how it turns out. Love this!😍😍😍
Do it, Helen! I'd love to see it if you do 🥰
Dear Jackie, this painting make me think about Monet. The pond in the background.. the only person who knowse when it’s finished is you, right? Thank you for sharing your process , it is an inspiration itself🙏😘😘
Thank you very much, Virginie! And you're right, I am the only only who can truly decide...and I hope everyone will be ok with my decision. 😂 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio you can not please everyone with your art and this is good! It give us ideas, feelings, inspiration, courage to try like you are doing and it is the most important part in it I think. Bravo for it, keep shining bright Jackie✨🙏😘
After you added the graphite powder shortly after I saw a face emerge which was interesting. As you added layers of color and texture it changed and I too felt the water Lilly feeling. Now with the dashes I feel Klimt-esk. Keep going and see what’s around the corner!
Thank you, Karen! I felt the same transitions. Who knows which part of my creative personality will show up on Saturday 😂.
I’d say continue past the busyness. One option might be to add your white and yellow contrasts by braying a splotch of white paint on a small Gelli plate, then pressing the Gelli plate onto your paper. (A la Robyn McClendon’s patchwork process, only keep the splotches irregular).
Interesting idea Big Waterfall. I'll think about it. 🥰
This was a fab video to watch.Love the tip to use gelli plate as a palate.I could watch you all day , but need to get creating myself, learning so much, thanks for sharing.❤
Thank you, Lorraine! Now get busy with your supplies and create something that makes your heart sing. My videos will be here when you get back 😄 🥰
Loved seeing this, Jackie - thanks for being so generous w/ your experimentation. My vote's on keep going. I'd love to see if you'd be up to making this painting less symmetrical and if so, how? I'll try to catch the live. 😊
Yes, Cam - the symmetry is making me nuts, and I'm having a hard time "problem-solving" this one. I hope I can figure something out for Saturday. 🥰
Its so obvious you love what you do by your lovely smile. I love what you do too.❤❤❤
Thank you, Andrea 😍🥰
If it was me, I would probably consider it done because I wouldn't know what to do next. But I would be so keen to see where you would take it from here. Can't wait for the 'live' video next week (even though it will be 4am here in Australia). That's alright as I will be attending a half day workshop at 9am to learn how to paint on black paper. So, I will be charged up for the rest of the day.
Oh Julie - I am so sorry about the time. There is a sweet spot in global scheduling - it's 3PM PST. When I host anything at that time it's a (mostly) decent time of day for most the world. Unfortunately, I will be away next Saturday afternoon, so early morning it is. Your workshop sound like so much fun - black paper is so underrated. I hope you enjoy it completely! 🥰
Ive never had creative itch this bad before. Ty for breaking the code to Monets water lilies! For me personally I liked it better before you did the final run with the brayer. (The multi colored/layered marks would have fit perfectly in my mothers formal living room with the similarly colored crewel flowers on white background couch and teal rug underneath with peacock colored accents around the room.) Is it finished? No. What ive learned as ive grown and watched is that good artist learn to push past the first blush of satisfaction because there is something better ahead. It will have depth and richness like a lifetime that has been well lived. Thats how id explain it. Excited for next week, its in my calendar.
Oh my goodness, Susan - so much delightfulness to unpack here! 😍 Thank you for your insight and encouragement. The pushing past part is the hardest, but most necessary part. I'm so happy you'll be there next week! 🥰
Loving this! Sophisticated happy colors. Now I’ll go back to the later video and see how it progresses. (Very intrigued by the gorgeous colors of the painting over your left shoulder.)
Thank you Nabby - the piece that is over my shoulder was created in this video: th-cam.com/video/I7civueugkQ/w-d-xo.html 🥰
Hi Jackie. Absolutely loved what you have done with this and can't wait to see you finish it. I shall be tuning in from the UK this afternoon at 5pm. Good luck ❤
Thank you, Susi - I look forward to "meeting" you today 🥰
Absolutely love this! Would love to see what you did on the end ❤
I'm not sure if you saw the follow up video to this, but here is a link 🥰 th-cam.com/users/liveftY4_ixW-fM
You are such an inspiration. I think I’ll try starting with a darker base color on my next painting. It’s fun watching you.
Thank you very much, Susan. 🥰
- I must be the only one that loves it just as is.
IMO there’s very little that’s left to do‼️
▫️
But I’ll watch next week. ;))
I like it as it is, too, but I do think it could be a little better with some more contrast. I'm glad you watched it today and thrilled that you'll watch it next week. I'm going to be so nervous doing this on a livestream. 😍
Keep going. I want to see what you do next. Looking forward to viewing the final piece.
Thank you, Susie - I'm looking forward to it too 😂
Hi Jackie 😊 What a pleasure for me to watch you on Sundays. It´s sort of a very relaxing "Me-Time". After that I go to my studio, feeling inspired in a very subtle way by you. I love, that you show, that making art is a steady process, sometimes going on over days or weeks with the same piece.
The piece you are working on here, reminds me of wind, blowing a whole lot of flowerpetals around.
Klimts "Kiss" came also into my mind, although there are no persons on your picture. When you stopped, I thought, I´d like to see some more dark contrast on top. Perhaps I would change over to collage, to add some different medium and structure. At the time you stopped, every spot on your piece seemed to have a similar weight and meaning - so what I would like to see you do, is, to work out some areas, giving them more preference. Bye my dear 😃. I´m looking forward to your next video. I hope I am right, that it takes place on 18 PM in Germany, because we are one hour ahead of London time. XO Britta 🥰
Great suggestions, Britta. Yes, it will be at 18:00 in Germany, and I'm so happy you'll be there. Thank you for your very lovely words. 🥰
Definitely go on, love to see what you end up with!
Me too, Denise - it could go anywhere 😂 🥰
Love your mark making! Once you put that purple in it popped. Keep going with it I wanna see where you can take this. Don"t for forget good ol' Caran dache crayons wonderful marks. Thankyou
Thank you, Kate. You know, I did have the Caran Dache crayons out, but I didn't use them. I wonder why? Maybe they'll make an appearance on Saturday. 🥰
Love this painting and will be watching part 2. Like the idea of using a gel plate as a palette. I pull a print from it w/ deli paper before being finished for the day.
Isn't that feeling the best, Libby?! The end of the day pull is so satisfying 😍 I'll see you in a couple of hours 🥰
Love it can’t wait for the finished paper
Thank you very much, D - I can't wait either. 🥰
What did you have for lunch? Must have been great ! Look at the wonderful painting!
I was a great lunch! I had a Carnitas Bowl made with mushrooms instead of pork. Scrumptious and inspiring. I better have it for breakfast next Saturday 😂🥰
P.S. I forgot to say I LOVE the colors you used! So beautiful!!
Thank you - I like them too 😃
Tomorrow im going to do the same as you!! I already have the typical first layers painted, and I didn’t know what next. 😊😊😊😊
I hope you have a wonderful time working on it, Lorena! 🥰
Love your process and the current results. Might go a bit further with softening particular areas, but would be tempted to stop.
Thank you, Susan - I am really running in mental circles with this one. 🥰
I love this painting so much! And I really enjoyed your mid painting pivot to mark making, you’ve really inspired me to loosen up with my work, which is something I struggle with. If it were my painting I would say not finished, I think it would look even better if it were finished with a little bit of glazing and some really THICK metallic detailing, but that’s just me, I quite enjoy thick textural paint
Hi Steven - thank you for your kind words. I have been thinking about adding some metallic into this (great minds 😃) I also love thick textural paint - have you ever used any of the Nova mediums? I adore their metallics, but haven't yet used their heavy mediums - looking for some feedback. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 🥰
Loved it so far…yes do go on.
Thank you Dede! 🥰
Oh, all these beautiful colours you've used, Jackie! A feast for the eyes 🤩🤩!
I would have stopped at 19:36 - it reminded my of a pond covered with lovely petals and all of a sudden a gust of wind blows them across the surface of the water - very romantic ☺.
It is very suspenseful to me what your next move or moves will be. I'm absolutely sure you will turn this painting into something even more marvelous than it already is ... so ... my point of view is: it's not done yet 🙂. Maybe it needs some disruptive element? What do you think?
Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💜
Thank you, Queen. I mentioned to someone else that I discovered a moment while editing that I wish I had stopped or focused on. It was a little before the moment you mentioned. Oh well, it gives me the opportunity to bring it together LIVE - in front of people 😳 - what am I thinking? 😂🤣
You will do magic 🤩! No doubt about that!
I always love watching you work! I am trying to use my gel plate more and like the way you use it to put your colors on and then pull the color when you are finished with those colors. I am going to give that a try! I am always learning from you! Thanks so much!!😍😍😍 Can't wait to see how this goes!
Ok, I should not admit this...but...the palette pull is the chef's kiss for me. I love it SO much. I think you will fall in love with it too, Catherine. 🥰
❤love all your experimentation...i m so scared to waste my stuff ...😅...and you taught me to enjoy and have fun FUN FUN 🎉thanks Do in🗼🤗
Do - it's not wasting...it's learning, and a good education is priceless 😍😍😍
This was so informative and interesting to watch develop!
Thank you very much, Phyllis! 🥰
I will fix the date with you 😂....this piece is awesome....I love the colors and the way you paint ..... I want to see more 😍🫶
Thank you - and I just fixed the date 😍
Oh! I absolutely love this! Very impressionistic Jackie! Monet's Gardens ❤ just a suggestion...leaf stencils or Woodies crayons to create leaf veins
Well hello lovely - you've been missed 🥰 Nice suggestions, I'm still trying to work out what I'm going to do. 😂
@@PaintedPaperStudio awww! Thank you Jackie 😊 I need my detox from my phone now and again. Painting and test swatching up a storm lately. So freeing and enormous fun! Oh check out Sandi's channel (Sandi Hester) she is an amazing artist 🎨 and so lovely too! I have learned so much from her too! Variety is the spice of life as they say 😁❤
Going to check her out now!
@@sandrafisherhayes3219
Love this, like to see you finish but I likely won't see it live
Thank you Heather. Maybe you'll be able to catch the replay 😍
always a pleasure to watch you do your magic!
Thank you, Maureen - that's really sweet. 🥰
Always a joy to watch you work. It's really pretty, reminiscent of petals on water.
But somehow I feel this has so much potential to go a lot further. I would love to see you take this piece and see what unfolds with it live next week.
And whether you end up hating it again or if it ends up the best thing you ever created. We'll be standing by you and accepting it's fate with you. 🖌😁
So well put, Happy! And thank you for your support...and reminding me...that the outcome will be ok no matter what. 🥰
OMG Jackie! I needed this desperately. I have a huge canvas sitting in my storage locker that looks much like what you had prior to the mark-making. I've been stuck on next steps. This has inspired me to dig it out and go at it again. And especially thanks for the tip on using the brayer to soften the marks - it makes all the difference. As for done -- I'd say darned close - maybe a few tweaks but not a lot!!! ❤
Pull out that canvas and paint with me next Saturday😍 I'll tell you Paul, I have so many paintings in my "deal with it later" file - I could make this type of video a hundred times over!
Oh my what incredible colors. I say finish live.
You have lots of wonderful ideas I know that are rolling around in your head as soon as you finished taping. You have to wait tho!!
LOL - I feel seen 👀 ! I have gone it to look at it several times, but I promise not to do anything to it until next Saturday. Thanks for being awesome Candace! 🥰
I'm excited!! ❤🎉❤
I keep coming back to Monet and his waterlilies, I think it's the blurry effect. It's lovely by the way.
My son made one in kindergarten, his teacher was amazing!
I ended up with a framed Jean Paul Riopel which still hangs over my stove, a Monet waterlilies that was in my bathroom for years, a Picasso that stayed in a drawer 😂 I can't remember the other ones, my son is 24 now. But I can say I've had the Masters on my walls 😂
I love this, Nicole. My son (25) did a Miro and a Matisse that I still have framed. I always loved when it was "art day" at his elementary school. 🥰
I can t tell you to go on or stop...because i m stuck with my own as soon as i think it s nice 😂...love.Do.
I hear you - I'm prertty sure I'm going to finish it on the LIVE (and I'm a little nervous about it 😂).
I'm a very happy camper with my coffee and Jackie video this gorgeous Saturday! You are just so darling, fun. adorable ~ and of course immensely talented! Wow, this painting really evolved substantially rather quickly from a dark, mysterious moody piece into Easter and gardening and springtime (and yes, I saw a lot of Betty Franks as you painted and made marks)! I wish I could see it upright and in person! From what I can tell, I believe it needs areas where the eye can rest and then be lead to other areas with more changes of value, saturation, or size etc. Am I making sense? In this painting my eye goes to the areas where the marks are either lighter, darker or more saturated in color. So perhaps just a few more places to grab the eye to be lead around the painting. But by all means, DON'T QUIT! XOXOXOX Deanna
You know what, Deanna - anytime I'm feeling a little down, I'm coming right back to this comment 💜 Thank you. And I agree - it needs more contrast for sure. 🥰
@PaintedPaperStudio I love love your videos, your big smiles, and this piece I really love. From dramatic darks to light lights, so much variety to create texture and layers. I'd have liked you to stop the marks from going all the way across and down. Eg keep them in your top left corner, taking up half or 2 thirds of the canvas, and leave space to enjoy the layer under the marks, and the contrast. How about some very simple elegant stark white eg outline of an egret or stylized people. See Flora Bowley ephemeral patterns.
Love this video-I’ve given you a thumbs up and signed up for your newsletter. ❤
That is so sweet, GG! Thank you very much - I'm so glad you're here 🥰
i liked it before the coloured marks and I like it with the marks. Im curious to see how much further you can take it aswell.
You and me both 😂
✨💖✨ Hi, I came to you after Mariah, from @P.M. artist Studio, mention you the other day. I'm really loving your videos!!
Thank you very much Alice - I'm so glad you're here! 🥰
Alice - could you tell me which livestream day they mentioned me? I would like to thank them 💜
this is beautiful!!
Thank you, Cynthia. I appreciate that, and my gut is telling me I have more to do, so I will go live tomorrow to try to complete it. Thank you for taking the time to watch and let me know what you thought. 🥰
Keep going! I can't make it to the live, but let me say in advance - stop putting paintbrush in your mouth! This is such a fun-looking project so far, would love to see what happens when you keep going.
LOL - I know Diane - I very rarely do that, but for some reason that day I kept doing it. Definitely not leading by example. I'm sorry you can't make the live, but maybe you'll catch the replay 🥰
I see some Monte in the painting !
Yes, I see a nod to Monet as well, which is interesting because his style and this style, is not my normal creative avenue. Having said that, I'm excited that I allowed myself to try something new and different for me. It's so nice to see you here, Susan! 🥰
This is finished, but then again, I thought so several times throughout the process. It first looked like deep under water. Then, from the side facing us, it looked like a waterway. It's now a beautiful abstract, in my opinion.
Thank you, Sue. I thought is was finished too, but I still have the pull in my heart which tells me it's not done. I sure hope I can figure out what it needs. 😂🥰
Halloooo from Scotland! I enjoyed this very much. I am a new, recent sub to your channel and you're teaching me so many things. I am truly grateful. I laughed at the brush in your mouth because I do that all the time. So much so that I'll be at my job and will reach up to grab a brush that isn't there! I've not tried the Seth Apter product. I shall look for it. Thank you again. This was lovely to watch! Bless xo
Halloooo Lindsey! I am so happy you are here - Scotland is one of my favorite places in the world 😍 I really try not to put the brush in my mouth because it's not really a good idea, but mainly because people on the interwebs scold me for it 😂 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰
Yes the brayer to soften marks, love that, creates a misty dreamy look
Yes, Susan - it's dreamy and delicious.Sometimes I'll go months without thinking of using that technique, and then when I do I remember just how much I love it. 🥰
Very cool to watch the transformation from dark, a little bit flat, to that bouncing, happy looking work!
Thank you Sigrun! It did go from flat and moody to happy and bouncy 🥰
Beautiful Jackie 😍 The colourful transformation is a wonder to watch. It transports me to a spring/early summer pond, it feels so happy and full of life.
Looking forward to next weeks live chat 🙏🏻💗🙏🏻
Thank you, Andrea. The color transformation on this one was a big deal - and I didn't even realize it until I started editing the video. I'm so glad you'll be there next week. 🥰
Finish live!
I love this painting! Question: if you hate a painting you have done at a point, can you gesso over it and start again?
Great question, Barbara! If the painting was an acrylic or any water-based paint you can gesso over it - I've done it plenty of times. If it's an oil painting, I have no idea - I don't paint with oils. Hope that helps. 🥰
I feel the piece needs a focal point. Other than that, it's pretty impressive!
Thank you Becky - I agree and I feel stuck. Thank goodness I have a few days to figure it out 😂
Thanks for another great video Jackie! The live sounds like fun either way! Also that purple is beautiful…is it a mix of quin magenta, teal and payne’s gray?
Thank you Robin - yes, that's the mix for the purple and I love it too! 🥰
go go go!
Thank you, Crow Madame! 😍
I can hardly wait to see what you do with this painting even though I like what you’ve done with so many colours and marks!
You and me both, Donna! 🥰
Oh my goodness Jackie this painting turned out really nice, I love it the way it is because it reminds me of one of my favourite Quebec artist Jean Paul Riopelle. I’ll be watching next week to see what you come up with 😊
Thank you, Fran! I'm going to look up Jean Paul Riopelle now, and I'm looking forward to "seeing" you next week 😍
I like it....not sure what you could add. Gabby M
Thank you very much, Gabby! 🥰
Hey Jackie! I say keep going!!!!! Can't wait to see where it brings you!
Thank you, Chloé - I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep going 🥰
I want more…. I love your paintings ❤ . More painting with your mark marking 👏🏻🎨👩🎨
Thank you, Bettie - you are very sweet. 🥰
I love how brave you are and how you don't give up. I vote finish the painting. It's great as is but I'm curious what more you could do with it.
Thank you MRD - I'll take brave even though I feel like this is a little nuts. I've never done a true livestream on TH-cam, I don't know the tech, and I'm going to try to finish a painting while people watch. LOL what am I thinking?! 😂 Thank you for your encouragement! 🥰
Love how it looks now, like Easter and spring, but keep going I know it will be fantastic!!!😊
Thank you, Liz! We'll see where it ends up, but maybe I should call it Easter Egg Hunt 😂😍
Love this! I had to immediately pick up purple after you did. Thanks Jackie 😊❤
Yay! Have a blast with it, Shaunna 💜
I love the colors you’re using. Can’t wait to see it finished. 😊
Thank you, Bonnie! 🥰
Definitely fun to watch and I'll try to catch the Live....I liked the dark edges with a more focused area of color because it reminded me of an explosion of colorful confetti 😍
MC - I see the explosion 😃. I took another look at it this morning at it feels like a Mardi Gras explosion 😍
It's finished!
Thank you, Barbara 🥰
love love love this mark making bonanza !! such freedom ! yes I would love to see the finishing touches next week :) Big thank you for great fun !
Thank you, Dawn, and I love calling it a mark-making bonanza! Thank you for that. 🥰
I love it!
Thank you, Tina!
i like it as is.
❤❤❤
It does not say ‘finished’. Keep creating! (More contrast; looks too neutral.)
Loved the layers and mark making!
I agree 100% Kathryn. I keep wandering into the studio to look at it - trying to imagine what the heck I'm going to do to it next Saturday 😂. I'm glad I have this week to reflect and think on it. 🥰
Love your channel. Question, what brand of spray bottles do you use? What I got at Hobby Lobby was good for about 30 seconds. Thanks.
Hi Deb! Thank you - I'm glad you like it. I'm not sure of the brand, but I get them from Amazon - I have a link to them in the description. I love them - not only do they work really well for water, but also for spraying isopropyl alcohol (which I do a lot when painting). Thank you for being here. 🥰
Finish the painting. It needs some form. I really liked it more when there were more quiet areas. Just my idea.
Stephen - you're not wrong. When editing the video, I saw a specific moment in the painting I loved (I'll share that on Saturday). I tend to get carried away with the mark-making and seem to forget that, sometimes, restraint is the better part of valor. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. 🥰
I say let's keep going! vk
Thanks VK!
Please finish the painting!!
Will do! 😃
I vote it’s finished
Keep going. Vary the size of the marks....please....lol
You are right, Shirley - it does need variation. 🥰
P.S.S. I coudl not think of the (simple) word I was searching my aging, pea sized brain for in my earlier "critique". It is CONTRAST! That's what I was trying to convey to you, the piece just needs a few areas of more contrast ot guide the eye around.
Not a pea-sized brain at all. Just call me when you start walking into rooms with absolutely no clue why you entered at all. Then we'll talk 😂
Oh, that happens on a regular basis!!@@PaintedPaperStudio
finish live
I think I'm going to do it Beverly 😃
Finish…please
Hi Terri - I'll be going live in an hour to try to finish the piece. I hope to see you there 🥰
Not done, needs a focal point.
I agree 😀
Go on painting….not finished.
Thank you, and you have the best TH-cam name ever! 😍
