  • This review of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus UK version, is a review of the Model 3 most people are going to be able to afford. Whilst I would have liked to have got the Model 3 Long Range, it was just a little but too much of a stretch for my budget at the time. The video explains why I think this was a bad decision!
    I discuss the change to electric driving; cost savings from owning an electric car; the Tesla Model 3 UK price; Tesla software and features; along with some of the pros and cons.
    When I first got the Model 3, there were a lot of things reviewers had said was an issue, which never really materialised, so I try to summarise where I think the issues have been and the surprises along the way.

      I would buy the Model 3 made in GF Berlin because it will have the new 4680 cells and the front and rear single casting combined with the structural battery pack. This means that the Model 3 will be better range, better safety and cheaper cost.

    Great and honest review..I have just had the delivery confirmation for my Model 3 LR, which will be my first EV too..The 3rd September can’t come quick enough :)

      Perfect, as you'll get a 70 plate then!!! I wish I'd got the long range, but at the time, £40,000 was a ridiculous amount to spend, but as I'm so pleased with it, the extra amount would have been worth it. EVs are so the way forward!!

      Agree about the price so went for a leased car through the salary sacrifice scheme. If I get on ok with it I’ll look to purchase at the end. I’m hoping for.a 70 plate but not fussed if I don’t..

    Hi, do you miss any of the 2021 upgrades compared to your car? (Or do you feel they are superficial except for the heat pump that evens out the winter vs. summer range ratio.)

    Thanks very much your videos are really enlightening and informative. I’m hoping to get a Long Range through my own company as a company car. We’ve just had Solar Panels installed so hopeful the monthly outlay will be offset by fuel savings.

      I'm going to be doing a video on charging with solar soon, as I got a Zappi charger that works by putting a few only what you produce from solar into the car, didn't work quite as expected, but still really good, so thought I'd share my learning. I'm jealous of everyone getting the long range, you'll love it :)

    Isn’t the sticky foam in the tyres there to seal punctures? Thats what my tyre dealer said.

    Well done on a great video . Couldn’t quite Stretch to model 3 so got Zoe ze50 gt line bit over 8 weeks ago and 4800 miles later love it .ev are great I love driving them. Done more in 8 weeks than did in last ice in 1 year. Costing about 1 a mile with no solar on Octopus agile.

      Yeah, the Tesla is a stretch financially, that is a lot of miles in 8 weeks, but that must be saving you a fortune - I really want people to move over to electric cars, I think they are great. I'm on Octopus Go, I was thinking about Agile, but having issues with my meter at the moment, so waiting for that to be sorted. Glad you liked the video

      Tesla Torque yer saving lots of money that we would have spent on fuel . You will save lots more on agile than on go if you move most your energy usage away from 4-7 pm. Saving about 50-60% over variable tariff seen about 80-100£ a month over last suppler eon.

      I was spending over £300 a month on diesel before getting my Tesla. It worked out cheaper than getting a BMW 3 series replacement for my last one.
      Best decision I’ve made in a while.

    What's the background to the advice to schedule in charging at supercharger points so the battery can precondition itself? Does an impromptu supercharger affect the battery? Also can the referral link for supercharger miles also be used if you're having one as a company car or only as a private buyer?

      The battery needs to be at a set temperature to achieve the best charge rates. If it doesn’t pre-condition all that happens is the charge rate may be a bit slower, but the software protects the battery so not an issue. It’s not a major factor if it doesn’t pre-condition, maybe will add 5 minutes to your charge time, driving alone will help prepare the battery.
      I don’t see any reason why the referral code should work. I don’t know for sure, but it works though leases as far as I’m aware, so can’t see why it would t work through business. I guess all you can do is try. Maybe someone else has experience with this and can chip in?

    An excellent review! I've never owned an electric car, but I have looked with some curiosity at them in the past. Things that have put me off are: 1. Range 2. Available charging points and the time it takes to charge them 3. Battery lifespan. I have read that over a 3 year period electric car batteries loose a lot of their charging capacity (just like a mobile phone) thus affecting the car's overal residual value. These batteries can be very expensive to replace.

      Hi Ivor,
      I've got a video about driving to the beach and back which was a 280 mile round trip, just to kind of show the range and charging times wasn't an issue. Have a watch if you haven't already, as that will put your mind at rest on those bits. On Tesla's website it shows all the Superchargers and where they plan to build more. The V3 chargers will charge you car in around 15 minutes (Depending on the amount of charge you arrived with).
      In terms of lifespan, The Tesla Model 3 comes with an 8 year warranty on the battery and drive unit (or 120,000 miles). There are some Model S cars that have done over 500,000 and no battery issues reported and some studies appear to predict life spans of about 25 years, so I don't think that's an issue either. Maybe early electric cars had these issues, but not so much now. The difference between the phone and the car is not charging it to full or discharging it to empty, hence the sweet spot of 20-80%, should keep the battery in good condition :)

      1. Range... I have the Long Range version. I can go 250 miles before stopping to recharge. Generally I need coffee before then.
      I also have been to Norway a couple of weeks ago by car. I did 3000 miles in 10 days touring around (and getting there and back).
      2. If you can charge at home (or nearby if using public chargers) then you always have 250 mile range every day. If travelling further then use the Superchargers to top up. You’d be surprised how quick it charges. Stop at the services, plug in, walk in, use the loo, get a coffee (most essential), have a look in Waitrose (or similar) and the car is sending a message to say it’s almost ready.
      3. My car has done 25,000 miles in a year and I’ve lost about 20 miles of range. It seems a decent amount but I’ve not noticed any real difference.
      My suggestion would be to try a coupe out and see what you think. Teslas are fantastic but not everyone wants one. The e-niro and kona are great alternatives as is the MG EV.

      At the moment, it's just heated seats and for some models a speed boost and full self driving.

    Good overview.
    We use ours for some long distance driving, regardless of weather or time of year. The supercharger network is priceless in facilitating this. If off the beaten track (the Lakes or Pennines), we’ll top up at random chargers (if they’re working), and even plug in at pubs for a couple of hours etc. When camping, we use electric hook-up...if required.
    City/town/village driving really is a breeze.
    Would be good to see an extended snowboarding trip or something. It would give a good idea of its capabilities.

      Thanks. I'm yet to try out other public chargers other than Superchargers. I'm actually going to make a video documenting how good they are, but go in blind and see how easier they are for a new user. I don't want to be too pro-Tesla but I think this is where they have the clear advantage. I've heard negative things about 3rd party chargers - Not working, unavailable, complicated apps, multiple apps. I just want to see for myself.
      I am planning more long distance drives once COVID disappears. Europe is definitely on the agenda! Plus other more remote parts of the UK where Superchargers don't exist :)

      Do you use ‘A Better Route Planner’? It’s great for planning long routes over any parts of the world with chargers. Will plot in Tesla chargers and others if you specify...and predicted cost. It’s pretty accurate, on the safe side. Good fun too.

      Hi Malcolm, I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but it sounds pretty decent to me. Have a blast on it when you do a test drive. The standard range plus has I think 12 speakers, where as the long range and performance have 14 plus a sub woofer. The standard range plus doesn't sound tinny or anything like that, and it's pretty good when you are watching a movie on Netflix

    Nice review, I have had my SR+ just over a year now and absolutely love it. Maybe do a video on supercharging, they are a huge benefit on long journeys and a lot of people don't realise how easy and efficient they are. I find the car charges too quickly! 👌🏻

      Hi Tom, thats a good idea. I think thats the main selling point to be fair of Teslas. There are way more Superchargers in decent locations, ridiculously quick to charge and more popping up or planned.

    Hi , I am planning on getting a Model 3 through my employer salary sacrifice scheme. have got a few questions here, looking forward to your help :
    1. you have mentioned about solar panels in the roof. could you please provide some more details regarding price, installation, cost benefit, etc
    2. i have an average range of 70 miles per day per week for the next 6 years . should i get the LR or the SR plus ?
    3. could you give some more ideas about free chargers ?
    4. i have learnt from a review that the current model 3 doesn't have a heat pump for the batteries and that's why the efficiency during winters is way less. what is your idea?

      Hi,
      I bought my solar panels about 9 years ago, and then they cost £12,000 I think. They have come down a lot in price, but equally so has the benefits and feed in tariff payments. If you do 70 miles a day, then either the SR+ or LR will suit. If you have the budget, I would go with the LR, just at it will be more convenient. If you are doing a 35 miles one-way trip, then 35 mile back, the SR+ will handle that, and you will have used about 35% of your change in the SR+. But remember you want to keep it below 80% and above 20%. Add in winter driving and more energy use and you might be looking at nearer 45% in winter for a SR+ battery. That only gives you 15% to play with, so depends if you are likely to do another 15 mile round trip anywhere, as then even if you started with 80% at the start of the day, you will be below 20% but the end. The LR will give you less anxiety if you have to do an unexpected trip at the end of the day. You would be able to charge that up overnight though if you had a 7.2KW charger.
      The Free chargers I've come across are in supermarkets or McDonalds, but the easiest way to find them is download an app called Zap Maps. You can then click on the chargers to find out fees. Some like Polar Plus charge a membership, but then their chargers are free, if you do the mileage, that might be worth looking into.
      I'd agree with you on the heat pump. Effectively from what I know, the heaters are like standard air heaters, so not efficient and drain lots of energy. At peak I think it is as high as 7KW an hour. The heated seats are more efficient, but not as effective. This is definitely a weakness of electric cars at the minute, and that's where the LR might work better for you as you won't need to compromise on heaters. If I was to do it again, I would definitely go LR. Hope that helps

      I kinda agree, its the ease of the Supercharger network and awesome over the air software updates. I'd actually ordered the VW ID3, then changed my mind last minute back in May 2019, so glad I did, as I'd still be waiting!

    A great review, I loved the relaxed style and clear Information that you provided. I also like your editing, it looks very professional. Your location looks fantastic, where is it?
    You mentioned that you used free chargers, can I ask how you find out where these are.
    Do you have any regrets with your colour choice? Would you choose the blue if you purchase again?
    I ordered a standard range but subsequently cancelled it, losing my £100 deposit in the process. I decided that the additional cost for the long range was worth it.
    I am about to place an order for a long range but I'm stalling on colour choice. My first choice would be red but I just can't bring myself to pay a whopping extra £2000 for the privilege. So it is now between the white or blue.
    To be honest, your review attracted my attention because you have the blue paint, there are very few blue model 3's reviewed, the vast majority are white. The blues looks great in your video however I do feel that the dark paint colours suit light coloured wheels as a contrast whereas conversely the white looks better with the dark wheels as a contrast, particularly with the aero wheels, purely my opinion of course.
    Do the aero wheels provide protection for the alloys underneath against kerbing?

      Hi David, thanks for the compliments, it was in a country park in Warwickshire. It was the first time I'd been there and it was amazing. Although very busy, which made filming difficult :)
      In terms of free chargers, there are a variety of third party apps you can use, and unfortunately there is no quick way to do it. It's a case of clicking on each one and seeing what the rates are.
      Mcdonalds are the ones in Northamptonshire that seem to be free and some supermarkets. McDonalds is a 7.2Kw charger through PodPoint and Supermarkets vary, but are slower at 3Kw, so not worth sitting there to charge unless you are actually shopping. The app that has the broadest network of chargers seems to be Zap-map, but then often you need to download the individual app for the network to use them, like Pod-point.
      I think this is the problem with the charging network at the minute and why I like the Tesla Superchargers, it's literally plug in, no apps, nothing.

      I'd agree about the cost of the long range is worth it, and I'm really pleased with the blue. I thought the white might look a little dull, but actually, seeing them drive round that might be my second favourite colour, as I think the black elements contrast well. (It just probably needs cleaning more often).
      Unfortunately the aero wheels don't provide any protection to the rims of the allows.

    Hi. Im an aircraft engineer driving from Birmingham to Heathorow doing there 4 shifts and back. What is your experiance its around 105 miles for me to do on the M40. I can afford SR but LR is around 500/months .Would it be enough SR?

      So, unless you are able to charge when you get to work, then you'd need the long range. Although the Standard Range plus has a stated range of 260 miles, that's 100% capacity in perfect conditions.
      Ideally you want to only charge to 80% on a daily basis, and reserve the 100% for the odd long journey. You also ideally shouldn't drop below 20% regularly.
      Now if this is a lease car and you are handing it back in a few years and don't care too much about battery degradation, then charging to 100% everyday, probably wouldn't worry you.
      The 2021 model 3 is going to be more efficient in winter due to being fitted with a heat pump, but in winter I generally get 3 miles per kWh, my battery is about 50kWh, so that would only get me 150 miles using all the capacity arriving with 0% charge. So lets say you charged to 100%, but didn't let it drop below 20%, that gives you 80% of your battery which is 40kWh's, or 120 miles.
      You definitely wouldn't make in there and back, and you'd need to leave with pretty much 100% each day. If you can charge at work, you may get by with a SR+, but you'd need a fast-ish charger, probably 7kW and above, assuming you are at work for more than 7 hours, you should be fine. (You also might suffer a bit of range anxiety)
      It's also not great for the battery to supercharge all the time, so you wouldn't want to rely on that on a daily basis (plus it would work out more expensive).

      Hi Paul, watch my video on the software update 2020.28.2 you'll see the car reverse out the garage. It is ridiculously tight. My next video that is out Monday is all about Tesla charging at home. So I'll go into details about what I have, cost and how it works with my solar. I'm going to follow up with one about specifics about my garage wiring and questions to ask the electrician, but this will give you an idea of my charging set-up (and feel free to ask any specifics when the first video comes out)

      I haven't, but also haven't given it any thought. I got the car is September 2019, so not sure it needs it yet. It doesn't smell like old socks, that is generally my cue. How often are you meant to change them?

      @@TeslaTorque Tesla recommends changing the cabin air filters every 2 years. I live in a hot humid climate, so I change mine every year. The filters themselves are really inexpensive... I buy them off Amazon for about $20 USD. The filters (2 of them) are housed under the center console, you have to remove 2 panels to gain access to the filter housing. Definitely not as easy to change as my Honda Clarity PHEV, but not terribly difficult.

    Am seriously considering a standard range + on a lease as I want to try an EV. Main reason for considering this model is price as I’m retired and have a tight budget. Have got off-road parking and would have a charger installed at home. Most of my driving is local so range doesn’t really bother me that much for the vast majority of my driving. That said, if I wanted to go on holiday..... say from Northamptonshire where I live up to the Scottish highlands or down to Cornwall is charging going to be such a nightmare I’d regret buying the car ? Appreciate the infrastructure is improving but have read stories about broken chargers, having to wait for a charger etc which really puts me off. Been enjoying your videos, great info and would really appreciate your opinion. Cheers.

      Hi @Ian Ashton, I don’t know what your situation is like financially, but it may be a better option to buy and sell later. They appear to be holding value well, check out second hand sales, which mean you would have more value in the car. Appreciate you need more upfront with that option. I think leasing an EVs are so new, so they are pricing similar if not more than combustion. The only risk is could depreciation change dramatically when longer range versions come put, so maybe look at more establish second hand markets like the leaf and Zoe to see how their second hand value was affected? Just some thoughts. but an awesome car. go for it 👍🏻

      @@TeslaTorque Thanks for the reply, very much appreciated ! Still have a few months before I change so going to just keep an eye on things up until I’m ready. The number of new cars being launched and the tech is changing constantly but at some point it’s going to be a case of making a decision and sticking with it. The Tesla appeals most though at the moment and seems to be very well thought through. The main issue seems to be patchy build quality. Am used to that though having owned a number of TVR’s but that was always a side issue and easily offset by the driving experience and having something a bit different. Cheers.

    It would be a great change in our lives, as usual, so you forget to get to the gas station and deal with a combustion engine issue maintenance. Thus, to have a complete view of the electric versus a petrol car advantages you have to project a hypothetical long period of use, let's say 10 or 15 years, and so you'd have the payback of your higher initial investment. Could you do this economical projections comparing to a regular petrol combustion engine car?

      Hi Giberto, yep, I think I'll plan to do that once I've owed the Model 3 for a little longer, as only had it 9 months. I did do some of the maths before I bought it, and whilst it will never create savings compared to a second hand car, I think it will pay for itself compared to a new car of similar spec easily. But I'll do a video on that, good idea!

      Hi Jo, I just checked and I can't remember where I got them from. I checked my Ebay and Amazon orders and nothing. I know I didn't go with a branded set, and just spent around £30 on a set for all 4. I think I must have googled Tesla Model 3 Car mats and then just read the reviews. I figured if I didn't spend much, I can always replace them easily if they wear out. So far so good and they don't look out of place, even at that cheap a price.

    Great video.Im on the brink of ordering the Standard Plus (once finances sorted). Ive test driven the car and its awsome. My only minor sadness about it is the lack of electric boot. First world problems i know. Ive had 2 hatchback SUV's in a row so a sedan is will take getting used. Electric opening and closing of the boot would have been amazing. I do use the boot at lot, orten carrying heavy stuff to it and the easy open electric boot will be sorely missed. Anyone know of a good after puchase work around thats affordable? .......btw- Standard range model 3 is the only Tesla that is currently affordable to me before some suggests the model X or S :)

      I'd agree with you on the boot. As a minor work around I bought these and they are really easy to fit. Not electronic, but at least opens the boot up. Only downside is it makes the boot a lot more difficult to shut, as you are pulling it down against the springs, and they can rattle. If your issue with it is not opening, then these will do the job, but if you want both, don't go for them. There are electronic ones out there, but I think they are more expensive and difficult to fit I guess.

      Also if you carry heavy stuff, don't forget the initial part of the boot is only recommended up to 60Kg, as it has a hidden floor, so put your heavy stuff at the back, but there is plenty of space back there.

    I currently have a 5 series (hybrid) and have been thinking of going fully elec while maintaining same level of quality. I must say everything else impresses me about the Teslas, but the build quality is shocking!!! Tesla need to pay more attention to paintwork, panel gaps and trim finishes.

      The paintwork is pretty bad. The panel gaps on mine weren't too bad, and the only thing about the build quality I'd say I've had an issue with is the paint. Hopefully when production moves to Berlin that will improve.

      I have got it, but don't think I had it when I did the review. To be honest, its pretty rubbish at the minute in the UK. Summon is just not helpful (Smart summon would be across a car park, but you have to be within a few metres of it in the UK and it can't go that far by law), parking takes too long, navigate on autopilot is okay, but you still need to indicate. I'm hoping for some significant changes in the next few months to it, as currently not worth anywhere near the money.

    I'm surprised that this car does not have a heated steering wheel. From experience in my PHEV Pacifica, I can say with confidence that heated seats and a heated wheel are all the heat you need down to about 20 degrees F. That's... very cold in Celsius.

      From what I have read, the reason given was that the vegan leather on the wheel couldn't be heated....not sure how much I believe that as the vegan leather is also on the seats which is heat?

    I would like to buy a Tesla but as others have pointed out, the build quality is putting me off. I’m hoping good news will come out of the German Tesla factory and that it will produce quality similar to other German marques by virtue of the German work ethic. Here’s hoping. If so, I’m all in for the Model Y LR AWD.

      Kind of I guess, but its the world we live in nowadays. How many times have you bought an app, and you pay more to unlock more features, which is already built into the software (Admittedly a lot more expensive than an app).
      It seems the trend now, could have been worse, could have made us pay a monthly subscription to keep them active - that seems an even bigger trend :)

    I test drove one. It is not bad as a daily car to cruise and commute to work etc. But, it is not an exciting car and not much performance. So, now my plan is to wait for a few years and get a Performance version on a used market instead of buying a new base model which is very likely to bore me.

      Yep. That’s a fair point, and I’d say your bang on. It’s not the most exciting car to drive, but comfortable for daily life. Have you test drove the performance? I’m not sure if that’s exciting or just quick in a straight line.....go the whole hog and get a Roadster 😏

      @@TeslaTorque My daily is F-Type V6S, so a car like Model 3 SR+ is very boring and rear seats are quite a waste as i don't carry any passenger 99% of the time. I will get the M3P in 2 to 3 years time when they're depreciated a bit on used market and it will be my new daily. I've invested some money in Tesla stock and another company, if i make a decent profit in 3 to 4 years time i'd replace the F-Type V6S with the F-Type R V8 model to be used as a weekend car for special occasions. I'm still not a fan of how Model 3 looks when comparing it to the F-Type, Aston Martin or other beautiful sports car. Roadster 2.0 is a stunning car, but you can get more exciting super car with brutal character at that price.

      @@TeslaTorque Also yes i've driven the Model 3 Performance. It is like a roller coaster when in autopilot. Handling is not as good compared to purpose built sports car as you can feel a lot of weight and rear tyres are too small. But, as a daily it is perfect, but just not special.
