I think its disgusting what people are doing to this brand right now. There is a lawsuit and suddently every other person claims that olaplex ruined their hair. Influencers with literally perfect hair are saying that. Olaplex is the only thing thaat helped me grow back my damaged hair and i still use it years after. Noticeably less split ends.

i noticed ever since k18 and similar products came out this has been happening. kinda odd if you ask me. i’m a cosmetologist, worked in salons… olaplex is the real mf deal and is the main reason why so many ppl are able to lighten their hair and still have it looking and feeling great. tons of ppl aren’t even using it properly at home. sure not every product works for every single person. i’ll never argue that but there’s so many factors related to hair loss.. correlation does not equal causation. i have no reason to go hard for any brand or product but trust me i have plenty of reason to believe lots of ppl don’t know wtf they’re doing or talking ab. the internet gives a platform for ppl to say anything without actual evidence. i also don’t put it past anybody to be paid off to make such claims. somethings weird to me ab all this

Now, I use it twice a week, and my hair has never looked better in my entire life, and I'm 55. I also have extremely fine and thin wavy curly hair, but it still looks amazing. I only use number 3. I've taken a lot of Abbey's suggestions, and my hair has never looked better.

I’m skeptical of the claims that Olaplex ruined someone’s hair mostly because it’s meant to be used on overly processed, damaged hair. Maybe in some cases it just isn’t able to fix the hair completely (kind of like when you repair stuff, you can only do it so many times and sometimes it’s ruined beyond repair). So my suspicion is that people who use it in general don’t have hair that’s in the best condition & Olaplex can be their last resort. Then when it doesn’t work, the hairs starts breaking off (which it would do anyway some time after damaging it so badly) & people blame Olaplex. When in reality it might just be that the hair was so damaged Olaplex wasn’t able to cure it & it just started breaking off due to wear and tear after getting it overly processed. Olaplex is a great product, but it’s not magic - sometimes there’s just too much damage.

I’ve used Olaplex for years and still love it! My only issue, which now makes so much sense after watching your video, was that my hair was doing great and then it just felt off. After speaking with my stylist and her seeing my hair she explained Olaplex is great for the thing it’s meant to do but that doesn’t mean it can fix all your other hair issues. If your strictly using their shampoo and conditioner and have dry hair like I do, you’re missing protein and possibly necessary moisture in your hair care routine. It’s not a miracle product line like people expect, but used in rotation with my other shampoos and conditioners it really can do wonders. I truly believe it is all in the way people are utilizing the products.

Here's another good question: why does Olaplex contradict itself? For instance, they say that you can't overuse the product. Then people who've suffered damage are told they've overused it. Same goes for misusing it. How do you misuse shampoo? Conditioner? If it's that critical, don't sell it to the public.

as a former ulta employee, we were told in brand training that the no. 3 couldn’t be overused, but they didn’t mention that for any other products. also, overuse could be defined as being used too much in place of your regular shampoo, conditioner, etc. if you use any shampoo, say, three times a day, your hair could look pretty bad.

Often the marketing department will say one thing, and the cosmetic chemists say another. It's a battle in the company which group gets to give the public message.
Many skin and hair care companies have this internal conflict. Sometimes the marketing department will make some truly silly claims, like "our product is chemical free".

You can overuse any sort of deep conditioning, bonding or protein treatment. What happens is that if you leave it on for too long or if you do it too often your hair will become overprocessed and starts to break off and cause hair loss. This happened to me with multiple deep conditioning and pre-poo treatments. I thought it was something wrong with my hair but the problem was that I was deep conditioning too much and leaving product on for way too long causing hair breakage. When I found that out I stopped leaving it on for too long and limited the amount of times I deep conditioned or used pre-poo and just like that my hair stopped breaking.

Initially, I bought Olaplex from their website, then I have only purchased at Ulta once they started carrying it. I have had excellent results but I only shampoo with it once per week. I use the 0 and 3 once per month. My hair has come such a long way. It was thinning prior to starting it and now it has thickened so much with very little shedding when I wash and brush/comb my hair. I also have my salon use it in my color/highlightes when I get my hair done once every 8 weeks. My stylist has noticed an extreme improvement with my hair as have I. I no longer have thin, frizzy hair and I am a very happy customer! I do realize, however, that everyone is different and what works for me may not for you, and vice versa.

Olaplex works very well for my hip length, fine, aging hair. I do take some special steps when I use it.
    - I only own the 3 (treatment) and 8 (mask). I only use one of these on a treatment day, depending on what I think my hair needs.
    - I use Olaplex once a month, that's often enough for me.
    - I don't use it on the hair close to my scalp. I focus on the mid-lengths and ends, then wipe my hands gently over my head hair. Almost none of it ever touches my roots or scalp - no need, that hair is very healthy.
    - I use just enough to cover my hair lightly. It feels like I'm not using enough, but it really spreads well.
When I use up my Olaplex, I might try K18, but just out of curiosity.
As far as hair loss, there are lots of things that can cause hair loss in healthy people - and the loss often doesn't start until a few months after the triggering event. COVID is a big one, so is any major stress. I lost a lot of hair in 2022 ... not due to the Olaplex, but because I was dealing with the stress of a couple of unrelated health issues. I would never blame a hair product for hair loss until I examined my life for 3-6 months before the loss began. And I'd consult a trichologist if I had any sudden, unexplained hair loss.

I appreciate all your thoughtful videos about these issues. I tried K18 under the pressure of a hairdresser, and I didn’t love it enough to want to continue paying for it. ($98 a bottle in my country). Olaplex ($50 in my country) is far more effective and affordable for me. The fertility scare frightened me, but fellow Australian, Lab Muffin (Dr Michelle Wong), said that these claims were not based on any good evidence. She’s a cosmetic chemist and chemistry PhD. So in conclusion, I continue to use Olaplex from time to time.

  • @Americancoconuts
    @Americancoconuts ปีที่แล้ว +7

Possible reasons of Olaplex side effects I can think of after using almost all products:
High PH in all shampoos, I have a sensitive scalp so I need a lower PH
Leaving #3 or #2 in for too long (overnight/hours etc) , hair will look great but the fragrance/other ingredients will irritate the scalp if left on too long
Shampoo has no sulfates, I'm one of the people who needs a sulfate shampoo to prevent buildup from products//oil. Most shampoos are made without them but I definitely saw a difference after I switched
Not shampooing after #2 or #3, skipping to conditioner which leads to excess buildup and ingredients left on scalp
Having psoriasis/scalp problems in general which can get triggered by certain ingredients (ex. fragrances) in a lot of shampoos, not just Olaplex
Leaving on the 4P purple shampoo, purple shampoos in general are extremely drying for the hair and scalp.
I still do the Olaplex stand alone treatment, #6,#7, the chelating treatment, and the 4-in-1 moisture mask. But after trying almost every product, I listed possible reasons it may irritate some customers or may not be for some customers. Excess buildup, scalp dryness/irritation, and high PH can cause hair loss potentially. But the reasons I listed are common problems with most haircare brands.

Yes! All the stylists that I work with always recommend the #3 or potentially the oil, but ask guests to consider their natural hair texture/styling needs (outside of damage) when choosing shampoo, conditioner, and other finishing products. Too much of one thing is always an issue.

My theory is that "bond repairing" is only a temporary fix...you can't really "repair" seriously damaged hair. It can make it feel and look better, but it's like gluing something that's broken. Sometimes it works, and sometimes the damage is too severe (or we continue damaging the hair with heat styling, bleaching etc.) and trying to put on more "glue" when the gap is just too big. Sorry for the bad metaphor, but I often feel like some people think Olaplex or K18 will protect/repair their hair from anything. That's not the case.

I would say the last question could potentially be answered in a simple way: it likely depends on the type of hair and amount of damage someone has. Olaplex is not really mean for healthy hair. That simple. There has been times were my hair was healthier than other times but I still used Olaplex no.3 and either didn’t do anything to my hair or left it dry and weird, but it didn’t caused that problem after bleaching my hair (going from brunette to blond) and putting the product on damaged or rough hair.
People sometimes don’t want to understand that Olaplex is meant for severally damaged/super color-treated hair and not just to “improve” hair that only needs a bit of improvement. It’s just not meant for that.
But imo it’s is also the brand’s fault for not promoting their products or informing their customers correctly. Their site has a bunch of confusing info or simply not enough information. They probably want more people to use their products so they can make a larger profit, and therefore, they don’t really want to clearly say their products are much better for damaged hair and not meant for every type of hair out there.
Too bad for them and for us with damaged hair. I believe their products are great for damaged hair and there is not much out there that works as good. So hopefully they get better at dealing with so much misinformation 🤷🏻‍♀️

That would suck. If anything maybe they could just create a second formulation, but they should definitely leave the original alone if it's effective for very curly hair. My hair became worse with Olaplex. For me, it does not really matter if the Olaplex was causing the damage or just not living up to its claims by not improving any damage caused by something else. I believe Abbey when she explains how rice water worked for some people, but caused major damage to her hair. I believe Abbey when she explains how Redken Acidic bonding products made her hair feel smooth and healthier, but they left my hair a brittle, frizzy mess after one use (as did Olaplex 3). K18 worked great on my hair, but I still believe other people who say that it made their hair feel more damaged. I am concerned when any company responds to consumer concerns by saying that their products cannot be overused and that it is impossible for them to cause damage (that was Olaplex's response). I think the safety data provided by Olaplex shows that it was tested on the skin of 90 people on their backs, and not on anyone's scalp and hair? If that is true, it seems like it could be possible for some people to have experiences that were not documented in their safety testing?

I used Olaplex 3 for about six months and was very happy with it. Then I bought Olaplex shampoo and conditioner and used all three for about three months. My hair began to feel thinner. I really thought I was losing hair so I stopped using all Olaplex products. I went back to my previous shampoo and conditioner. Within a month my hair felt thicker and fuller. So I couldn’t have actually lost hair. Not sure what caused the thin hair feeling but I have moved on from Olaplex.

If your hair was fine with just No. 3 but then felt thinner from adding the additional Olaplex products AND then went back to feeling fuller and thicker after a month of discontinued use, I'd say the additional Olaplex products must have coated/weighed down your hair to the point that it felt like a decrease in density.
I've never used the rest of the Olaplex line outside of the treatment, so I can't say my assumed conclusion is absolutely correct, but the treatment alone never made me feel like I lost density when I technically didn't. Especially since it has to be shampooed out. My hair feels clean (without a coating or residue) after I shampoo the Olaplex treatment out.

Great great video! Thank you for this!
I am actually a huge fan of Olaplex. I have used K18 as well and I liked but not loved it. I have every Olaplex product (excluding No.1 since I don’t bleach my hair), including all the “professional only” products. I should note that I have a beauty license and can purchase all of these products at less than half of retail cost. Olaplex was the main component of my haircare routine when I had bleached hair, but since it’s been over a year since I’ve had any chemical processes done to my hair, I haven’t used it as often. I will say that No.0 doesn’t come in a “spray” nozzle but more like a “stream” so that wouldn’t make it airborn and therefore they wouldn’t need to change the formula.
Overall I love Olaplex and as you have pointed out many times, there is no true cheaper “dupe” for it because its main ingredient is patented and no other brand can use it. As my stylist says “Olaplex is hair surgery compared to other products which are just band-aids” haha!

Personally, I have fine but medium density hair that is 3/4 platinum blonde with the top being hilighted. My blonde hair is extremely fragile, damaged, etc. I've used Olaplex and K18 (not together, but alternatively) for over a year. They both help, and I like doing K18 for one was day then doing Olaplex 3 then 8 (I love their mask) on the second wash day of my week. I have gotten my super super chemically processed hair as good as it can be and I truly think both brands have helped.

There is an opportunity for a big shady money grab here. Imagine someone with previous hair loss going out and buying Olaplex and then falsely claiming Olaplex caused the hair loss simply because there's money to be possibly made by joining the lawsuit. Unfortunately this is the society we live in. Health issues, stress, poor diet, medications, post-partum, chemicals and sudden weight loss are just some of the things that can cause hair loss of varying degrees.
I suspect there will be an increase in some people suffering hair loss if using Ozempic due to dramatic weight loss. If they're also using Olaplex will Olaplex get the blame?

Like i would brush my hair and it would snap. My hair has never been like that. So i did a timeline that many years ago my hairdresser at the time starting doing olaplex treatments ...that it was a new product that helps women who bleach. Well the light just went on,....hair and scalp troubles started since then. I was trying to solve the problem with all sorts of shampoos thinking it was dermatitis, psoriasis, ....nothing worked.....i truly believe it was the olaplex. I have a hairdresser who got me #3 and #8 last year ..i have notice really bad breakage like right at the crown area. My hair has always been beautiful and healthy til the last few years.

I get my roots bleached and my hair toned every few months. One time I got it done, I asked if she did anything different, because I could tell my hair was noticeably better. She said the previous time I got it done, there was an olaplex shortage (or they didn’t have it, I forget) so they had to use a different brand of the similar thing, but they had finally gotten more in. So in my experience, olaplex when I get it on my hair during a bleach and tone appointment makes a positive difference in my hair. I don’t know the specific olaplex product used and if this is the same product that people are having trouble with though.

I would like to clarify that while “protein overload” may not be the correct term, too much protein will cause a moisture deficiency. Now what is “too much” protein, is different for everyone. Low porosity hair for example is known as protein sensitive. Needed to say this because I wouldn’t want someone to watch this and go out and use too much unneeded protein like I’ve done in the past. Moisture deficiency can take quite a bit to come back from even with hydrating treatments from a professional.

I love deep dives into brands, business etc that are informative and not gossipy. I find it very interesting. I’m not sure what to think of the lawsuit. I think it will be difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, with so many factors involved in hair loss, that Olaplex was the cause. But soooo many people have issues with this brand that I don’t discount that it really REALLY doesn’t work for some people and they have terrible experiences. Having said that, before I found your channel and I was looking for my hg hair products I would read reviews and every single shampoo would have reviews of it causing hair loss. Why does Olaplex destroy some peoples hair and yet fix others?…
After watching this video, my opinion is that based on some of the questions, clearly people are not using the products correctly. Also, we all have different hair types and chemistry. Hair and skin will react differently for anything you put on it from lotion to makeup, hair products ect. Just like I can’t use bath and body lotion. I break out. Other people don’t. That does not mean that bath and body lotions are bad.
I have thin fine hair. I have been using Olaplex for over 3 years. I use the products as directed. I have had NO problems. And knowing my hair, if anyone’s hair should have fallen out it would be mine! And it didn’t. It precisely did the opposite. It has helped me grow out my hair and loose a heck of alot less! We all naturally shed hair, so don’t confuse that with hair loss. Olaplex has been a wonderful product for me. Just like maybe bath and body lotion is great for you. No need for law suits and hype over something that was probably misused in the first place!

I swear my hair is falling more since I started using Olaplex! And I follow all of Abbey recommendations for using the products. I'm so unsure if I should continue to use it... :s
But disclaimer - I don't blame the brand, I just think it doesn't work for me.

It’s funny I have never used it the way that they said. I always put Number 0 in a spray bottle and I used it after washing my hair. The results that O got were amazing. My stylist/analyst brain was not agreeing with their explanation of how to use the product that being said. It is the only thing I used from them now. I prefer Epres and K-18.

If it’s not tested for safety when it’s dispensed in a spray they cannot recommend you put it in a spray bottle. They probably just had to get data on the safety of it being dispensed that way, and this does not indicate a formula change.
Comparing the ingredients would be a much better indication.

I still use it and nothing has happened to my hair. My hair has gotten healthier. I do follow instructions anytime I use any products. 😊

Olaplex shampoo and conditioner are great IMO, but you need less than normal and it needs to be rinsed out well. They are heavy, though, so usually I only use no3. I also use K18.

Olaplex made my curly hair super dry. Unfortunately never gonna buy it again, cause i bought it to repair my damaged hair but it only made it worse

Curlsmith has a nice bond salve that has a nice balance of protein and moisture. It has helped my wavy/curly hair maintain structure and overall hair health.

The only fault that I see in olaplex is that they never properly explained which products you should never ever combine with olaplex and for whom those products actually are.
I bet must people don’t even know that combining olaplex with products that contain Keratin or similar proteins is a shortcut to severe breakage, or that olaplex 3,4 and 5 mostly repair but don’t hydrate.

My mother has been bleaching her hair for years and Olaplex no.7 (oil) is her absolute favorite product! She doesn’t use no.3 or their shampoo, because no.6 and 7 is enough for her to maintain a healthy look of her hair, so I guess her scalp is not in danger🤷‍♀️

mark anthony recently came out with a bond repair line at the drugstore!! i would love to hear your opinion and thoughts on the line; i recently tried the hair mask from that line and i really liked how it made my hair feel but that doesn’t mean it’s effective so i would love to hear your take on it! 🥰

I’ve used Olaplex and it didn’t do anything for me. However, I’ve used Nexxus with protein and that works wonders on my bleached hair. I’m not mad about it because it’s fraction of the price. I also use Aphogee and that also works wonders awesome. It’s a protein treatment. Works awesome on damaged hair. Having said that my hair does well with protein probably because it’s bleached. My hair is long and soft and shiny

I bought the whole system when Ulta first started carrying it. Shampoo, conditioner, number 0 spray and 3. I never saw a drastic difference in my hair, which WAS damaged from bleach. But then I noticed a ton of hair shedding and the overall texture of my hair felt worse. I didn’t use Olaplex shampoo every wash day, so it took a while for me to make the connection. I ended up doing some internet research on why my hair was falling out and found lots of women with fine curly hair had the same hair loss and texture issues from the set. Ended up throwing the rest of the Olaplex away and my hair went back to normal after a few months. Will never use Olaplex again, but K18 is fabulous (so far…)

@@IslandVibez_Virgo K18 is expensive but worth it for me. I noticed softer, healthier feeling hair after the second or third use. It’s been about 8 weeks and I’m still on my first bottle, so it lasts quite a while.

Spray bottle products, I spray into hands and apply that way to work it in better instead of just spraying all over.

I've been an Olaplex No 3 user for about 2 years now (haven't tried any other products from them). I've never applied it to my scalp, just the mid section and the ends. I found that it works best on shampooed hair and waiting 45+ min before washing it out (10-15 min just didn't give the same results). My hair just feels stronger and looks more sleek. But I don't rely on it for softness or shine, I use conditioner for that. Lately I've been wanting to try K18 purely for the reason that it's a leave in. The 45 min waiting period is getting pretty tiring...

Hey Abbey, Im a subscriber and I am so very happy to have seen this video. I had been using the number 0 and number 3 once a week for about a year and then I began to notice numbness on certain parts of my scalp. I also began to notice some hair breakage which shocked me because this had never happened before. For a moment there I thought I ha long covid! Anyway I immediately stopped using them and the feeling to my scalp came back after a few weeks. I still use the shampoo and conditioner 2X a week but lately I also noticed some breakage. I am mow switching to Metal DX and hope my hair goes back to normal. Thanks for the video. Big hug from Switzerland!
