I have fine hair with medium density. At first I used K18 without conditioning afterwards, and my hair felt pretty dried out, but after watching this, I switched it up. I conditioned my hair after letting K18 sit for four minutes, and holy moly my hair has never looked better. I’m on my fifth wash and usage now, I’m really glad I watched this.
@@Wut988 So you apply K18 on towel dried hairs then K18 for 4 min then rinse off conditioner then rinse off? But won't you be washing out K18 as well? It's expensive af, I dont wanna waste it
I'm so desperate to order this but I've banned myself from buying hair products until I use up my old ones and I still have loads of olaplex number 3 left 😢 lord send me strength 🙏😂
I've gone through mine and found the bottles with the least amount left and temporarily taken away all the fuller bottles so I can start using things up instead of having 100 half bottles 🤣
Amazing video as always! Actually Olaplex works on reconnecting disulfide bonds ( the “steps” of the ladder) and k18 works on peptide chains (the side bars of the ladder) k18 did not claim to reconnect disulfide bonds, but but work on the helix part of the keratin in the hair which is actually what the disulfide bonds “glue” together. I have great results utilizing both combined on coloring day and for home care I recommend to my guests k18 for 5 washes, than once every 4 washes for maintenance, and Olaplex for the washes they are not doing k18.
@@lucastamaio thank you for your detailed reply!! My hair concerns are it’s quite fine and recovering from hormonal hair loss a year or so ago. So I want it to be as strong as possible. I don’t color it often and if I ever do for events I go a shade darker and ask for gentle dyes. I don’t use heat except for events I’ll blow dry it on a medium setting. So it’s not very damaged but it is waist length with a small amount of split ends that I get trimmed when they become noticeable. I just want to keep it strong and prevent breakage and excess shedding from happening again.
To be fair k18 has a lot of amazing results so it’s not surprising or unreasonable for someone to love it enough to talk about it without being sponsored. I really appreciate that your channel is not just QVC where you try out new products all the time. It shows that you promote genuinely good products. I’ve been impressed by all the products you’ve recommended that I’ve tried out!
Random note, but I have “virgin” hair and I still love K18! I’m in maintenance mode with it and use it about once a month. Before discovering Abbey I didn’t have the best hair practices (no leave in conditioner, brushing too rough, etc) and I feel like K18 has helped my hair become stronger even though I don’t use any heat on it or dye it.
@heatheranderson2618 Thank you for your comments. I have been growing my gray out for the past 3 years. Believe it or not, I still have about 4 inches of colored hair on my ends. But the rest of my hair is virgin like yours. I just started using K18 and wondered if I should use it only on the ends or take it all the way to the roots. I now plan to use it mostly on the ends and take the rest toward the roots. Following up with a conditioner mask after the 4 minute waiting time.
If you have good results, then of course staying with your routine is good. I just wanted to say if your hair is virgin, your internal bonds likely are not broken... meaning your money could be applied to things like quality masks and leave in conditioners that would just maintain and enhance your hair. You actually are not in need of a bond builder. Just wanting to save you a little money ❤️
@@queenkoi thank you for the tip! Not sure if you’ll have an answer to this, but I recently started oral isotretinoin which I know can cause your hair to become dry and possibly thin. I was also thinking K18 and the living proof mask would help protect against those side effects. What are you thoughts on that? Or would I be better off just doing hair masks? Thank you 😁
Thanks for the comment. It has been several years since I colored my hair and I hardly ever use heat, but wondered if I could use these products and see any results (since I'm not actually doing much to damage my hair....but I still have breakage).
I use olaplex and k18 for over a year and love them together. I have fragile curly hair that never grows but have gained more length in the past year than in the previous five years. I use a leave in conditioner after the k18 has been on for four minutes and have had some of my best hair days that way. 😊
@@renadempsey842 Hi I use Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil leave in conditioner and Nexus humectress. Then curl cream and gel. It has been great 👍🏽
I just ordered my 3rd bottle of k18, I love it a lot! I do use it as you recommend, by washing, microfiber-towel-drying, lather and apply k18, wait 5 minutes (just in case!), then conditioning, then rinsing. It works for me! Edited to add that I split my hair into two parts and use two pumps per side. Also, I did not like using this product before I found out you can add conditioner after, because my hair didn't feel soft and nice without it. It definitely makes a difference!
I use Purology leave-in after dwell time for K18. Another TH-camr, hair dresser, recommended leave-in always even if using conditioner or mask. Has made a big difference in de tangling & softness.
@@Drewerose K18 is to be used on just shampooed hair.. when you put it in your hair after 4 minutes you can add whatever leave in conditioner you want buy!!
@@Drewerose personally, I use conditioner directly on top of k18 (after the wait time) and the k18 does not seem to "block" the conditioner. That's just what works for me! I don't like wetting my hair, then toweling it to be damp again before conditioner. Seems like wasted steps. Every person's hair is different though!
@@andycummings2900 I agree, I use conditioner after k18, then rinse. Then after the shower I use the purology leave in, along with a couple of other styling products. My hair is fine, but it drinks up moisture!
Dr Jenny Liu, a derm has a video giving helpful, science-based explanation about both k18 and olaplex. Yes, not only can you use them together but are encouraged (if you can) to do so because they work synergistically in different ways.
Using K18, redken acidic bonding shampoo, amika the cure bonding shampoo, good hair day bonding treatment, L'Oreal 8 bonding treatment, and Devine's hair serum. Plus rosemary hair oil. Love all the products! Thanks for your channel as well❤
It’s truly making a significant difference in my hair. I’m 51 and been dealing with post menopausal hair loss. I feel bald. My hair that’s left just felt dry and a little damaged. I color my hair but only ever touch up the outgrowth. I’m now on two prescription topical drugs and using a hair max laser band. Seeing new growth and determined to take very good care of my hair. This stuff is great. So is using the ogx as a pre shampoo treatment. I was already using Purology shampoo and conditioners. Not sure I see a huge difference with the Livingproof treatment. I’m still deciding.
Honestly, I’d suggest most people try a sample size of the product just to test, because even lower porosity hair can see improvement from it. I have virgin hair that I never heat style that’s overall pretty low in porosity, and K18 makes a noticeable difference in the health of my ends. I apply it everywhere just in case (tbh I might stop to save money lmao) but I’ve never noticed a difference on the hair from roots to where I might tie a low ponytail where my hair is incredibly silky and healthy. I notice a slight difference from just below the ponytail line until the ends, but it’s pretty minor. But wow, the difference in my ends is impressive. I try to get my hair cut every 3-4 months because after 4, I can start seeing split ends, and the ends just feel awful by then. After using K18, I had no split ends after more than 4 months, and the way my ends looked and felt was so much nicer. There is still a porosity gradient but my ends are much more like the rest of my hair than they previously were. If you have healthy, virgin hair but your ends still get kinda gross, it’s a game changer for them. If you’re trying to get your hair cut less often for any reason - laziness, cost, growing out your hair, etc. - it may end up being very helpful.
Thank you for saying that! I do not die my hair and hardly ever use heat. But for health reasons my hair has been an absolute mess. Tons of breakage and the most split ends I’ve ever had. Lots of hair loss too, although I am not looking towards this product for hair loss. Anyways, I have had great results with bond repair products even though people say it’s only for bleached hair, and I am excited to try K18 too.
@@wplants9793 definitely give it a shot, then! I’ve also experienced health problem-related hair changes (and loss, and fwiw, the Ordinary’s multi-peptide density serum helps me with that a lot). I think K18 is worth a try! I hope it helps you as much as it’s helped me ❤️
Just have to say I was so sceptical of your promotion of K18 you seemed to rave too much about it, so I figured you were sponsored., and I refused to believe the hype and it was just too expensive. But finally i was so fed up of my damaged hair, and olaplex made a difference but not a huge one, so in desperation I finally bought k18 and wow from the first use I felt and saw a big improvement in my hair. It truly is fantastic stuff and now I know why you rave about it, and I’m sorry for doubting your motives lol! Thank you so much for all the research you do, all the info you share and for this fabulous recommendation
I have very fine hair and I’m 43 so my hair is starting to change. I can feel it more fragile and prone to breakage. On top of it I over processed it about two years ago (not the smartest decision ever) I’ve used Olaplex for years with OK results. I tried K18 a few months ago and it completely changed my hair for the absolute best. After 6 weeks of intensive treatment my hair looks like it used to do 10 years ago, it’s shiny, smooth, zero frizz and it holds styling as never before. I’m in maintenance mode now and alternating it with my last bottle of Olaplex until I finish it. I don’t think I’ll use Olaplex anymore. I don’t need it. K18 is an investment, no doubt about it, but worth every penny in my opinion. I use it as recommended by the brand and it’s so effective on my hair that I can skip conditioner when I use it. After the 4 minutes I only apply styling cream and heat protectant and my hair looks and feels amazing.
Your hair sounds like my hair! Fine hair that’s prone to breakage and getting worse as I get older. Can you tell me your routine as someone with fine hair? I find most ppl giving advise have thick hair and have different needs. ❤🙏
I LOVE K18- I have very fine, straight hair and had slight bleach damage after balayage. I didn't have any breakage, but it looked dry and dull. After using K18 it's shiny again and feels so much stronger. I don't know why, but it also made my hair feel thicker. I personally like the feeling when using it...I just add a leave-in conditioner after the 4 minutes and it's good to go. Now I just use it once a month before I go to get my roots touched up. BTW. I feel like the color stays better in my hair when applying it before the toner.
I'm so glad I watched this! I used K18 twice when it first came out, and hated it. My (fine/thin) hair was so tangly and dry afterwards. I kept feeling like I needed to condition afterwards, but the product clearly said not to. Good to know you actually CAN condition afterwards...
I have lots of hair but it’s very fine and fragile. K18 has made such a difference for the better. I use no conditioner in the shower, leave k18 on for 4 minutes or more then use pureology leave in conditioner. Get comments all the time asking what I’m doing to make my hair look so healthy. Really appreciate your reviews. They are so helpful
Keep in mind I have fine hair, so that may be why, but I actually love how my hair feels after using just k18 and a leave-in conditioner. My hair feels light and clean and smooth! Not dry or frizzy or tangly. Even before adding the leave-in conditioner, I feel like my hair feels great (maybe even a little conditioned) after k18. Just a testament to how different we all are! Test it out and see what works best for your hair ❤
The game changers for me were learning about properly emulsifying the product between my hands before use AND being able to use conditioner afterwards. I absolutely hated the way my hair felt without conditioner. 😅
I wasn’t sold on k18 at first. For the cost and the process I didn’t think it paid off. But I watched your videos, did a little more research on it, started conditioning w it and stuck w it. It’s now been almost a year, and my hair is so much better. I’m so so glad I stuck w it, even when I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted! My hair is so much softer, smoother and just more manageable. It’s taken time, but turns out has been well worth it. If you are questioning the process, I’d stick with it!
I'm in the K18 "maintenance phase". I wash and condition my hair twice a week, and I use K18 as my conditioner in that routine every 3-4 weeks. Whether I use an in-shower rinse-out conditioner or post-shower leave-in K18 treatment, I still follow up with Pureology Leave in Spray, mainly for blowdry heat protection. I have never felt compelled to use an additional rinse out-conditioner after using the K18. I have much less hair than Abbey, just past collarbone length and fine texture, and have found one pump to be perfect. I can say without hesitation that I have never spent so much on a hair product and it is unequivocally worth it. Thanks to Abbey for turning me on to this product!
Thank you! I can’t wait till you take us through more knowledge as you begin your trichologist journey!! Because all your recommendations that I have purchased from you have changed my hair for the better! Drugstore and or high end! Thanks!
Seriously love the breakdowns like this when you approach common questions! Ever since finding your channel and following your steps my hair has improved DRASTICALLY! Thank you for the knowledge 🙏 😊
I don’t think I’m a candidate for K18. My hair’s in good shape, and I only get it professionally colored, without bleach, every six to eight weeks. But I have to tell you I’ve actually seen the improvement in your hair. It’s GLORIOUS! And the color is gorgeous. You’ve never looked more lovely, IMO. I never miss an upload, even if the subject isn’t pertinent to me. 💕
You might be surprised. I use k18, and I have never color treated my hair and rarely heat style it (I typically air dry my hair). I have noticed a big improvement in softness and overall manageability of my hair. I have fine wavy to curly hair. However, my hair is prone to breakage due to having an inflammatory scalp condition (seborrheic dermatitis), so maybe that is why I noticed such an improvement. 😊
same, i stopped swimming over a year ago, i’ve been washing 1-2x a week for over 3 years, i’ve been using protective styles for 3 years, silk wraps for 2 years, always brushing gently, and doing an oil mask pre wash every wash for 2 years. i never use heat. i don’t think my hair has enough damage to justify the price
She answered unknowingly why you can use Olaplex and k18 together. K18 rebuilds whole hair. Olaplex builds one specific bond. I use together and it is like magic.
Not quite...there are four kinds of bonds in the hair: salt, water, disulfide, and protein/keratin. Salt and water bonds are broken and put back together every time you wet your hair, so every product does this without any active ingredients. Olaplex repairs disulfide bonds specifically (k18 does not). K18 is a peptide, so it works on the protein bonds (olaplex does not). So they each specialize in one of the bonds, and then ALL products impact salt and water bonds, including just water.
@@gumiho6075 yes you can! I personally find it easier to do them in separate washes because they don't need to be done every wash or even every week to be effective for most people, and it's a bit easier. If you do them in the same wash you should really shampoo twice for maximum effectiveness, which can be annoying or somewhat drying too. To do both in one wash, here is one example of a routine that could work: shampoo, olaplex and wait for at least 10 minutes, shampoo again, towel dry hair, k18 on towel-dried hair for 4 minutes, style and add products as needed!
The brand's communication is quite poor and that has led me to not get great results with it in the beginning, and it actually cause more breakage, until I learned your method and it finnaly started working for me. It was a night to day difference! Especially using conditioner (or better yet a mask) afterwards and then rinsing it out garanteed me soft and lightweight hair instead of the stiff brittle mess I was getting before.
Abbey is by far theeee best and most trust worthy person when it comes to hair and skincare. I watched her hair wash routine and in depth videos on k18 and living proof triple bond complex and immediately purchased both becuase of her. I was also given samples of the redken shampoo she talks about as well as an Amika deep conditioner. I followed her hair was routine using all of these products and my hair has never felt better. I have years of bleach damage and I can say my hair truly feels like real heathy hair and not straw after one time. Yes it’s extensive and expensive but I guarantee my hair will show results if I continue this routine and I certainly will be. Thank you so much!!!
I finally tried k18, and i can say I’ve seen a lot of improvement. Overall less breakage, and feels stronger, and i was experiencing a lot of breakage from over processed bleach. Ive tried n.3 by Olaplex twice and it has done nothing good for my hair
As a person with little to no heat use and no bleach or dye in my hair I can say k18 and other bonding products are still a very necessary part of my routine.... My hair is wavy/curly and prone to damage and breakage I love the L'Oreal bonding set and k18
This was VERY helpful. Abbey. I used K18 over 4 washes and saw results. But I was using a leave-in after the 4 minutes and it just wasn't enough conditioning for me (my hair also doesn't like a lot of leave-in products as well). Now that I know I can use it in the shower after towel drying, let it do its thing for 4 minutes, THEN apply regular conditioner and rinse that out, like your routine, I'm excited to see how that works. In fact, I'm doing it today (because today is clarifying shampoo day). Thank you, Abbey!!!!!
I asked K18 about using Epres then Shampoo then K18 and received the following answer: "We do not recommend using the Epres treatment before applying the K18 Mask as there are ingredients in them that may prevent the peptide from penetrating through. You'll shampoo, rinse, skip conditioner, towel dry, wait 4 minutes- for the peptide to penetrate down to the polypeptide chains of the hair."
I know everyone loves K18, but it didn't do anything for me. I used up two of the 50ml bottles and didn't notice a different, despite using it properly. Olaplex helped and improved my hair a lot though, so maybe it's my hair type or my hair isn't damaged enough to see a noticeable difference with K18. While Olaplex seem to use a lot of humectants and oils which leave an obvious difference on my hair, leaving it soft and silky. I think it would be interesting to see if K18 ever expands beyond just the shampoos and the leave in, like a K18 conditioner, hair oil, dry shampoo, heat protectant etc like the way olaplex did.
p.s. thank you for your honesty on sponsorship. I tried k-18 on my hubby (I'm too afraid of ruining my hair after so many sponsored people recommend bad products) who can more easily cut off ruined hair than I can. That said - I noticed (as did he) that his hair seemed coarser after he used the k-18 than when he used his regular (cheap) hair conditioner. the last thing I want to do is make my hair more coarse, so I passed on it.
I just started using k18. I have fine oily hair that breaks very easy. Since I have to wash my hair everyday I did what the directions said to use it for the first 6 washes and WOW what a huge difference! I know it’s expensive but this product is totally worth it. I also followed your directions on how to use it. Use it in the shower wait 4 min then rise and condition your hair. My hair has never looked so good and it’s bc of you! ❤
I use a pea sized amount of Olaplex No. 6 after conditioning, even when I use K18 (which is about once a month). I haven’t had any issues and with my color treated gray curly hair (that I usually straighten) I find this combo works great to keep frizz at bay and keep my hair strong & healthy.
I still really don't understand the difference between living proof and K18. I love Living Proof - can you do a little, show and tell wash day, using both? Thanks for this breakdown today!
Deciding between K18 and Olaplex is definitely a personal preference. After trying both, I have determined that I absolutely hated K18 but really loved Olaplex. However, I have friends that really didn't like Olaplex, but loved K18. I recommend ya'll to find samples of each and just see which product you could most easily squeeze into your hair routine, as well as which end-result you prefer. Thanks for the informative video!!
My stylist gave me a trial tube which iam almost out of and I loveee this product so much. Olaplex worked a little but k18 has been pure magic, my hair is almost unrecognizable now.
I use K18 with both Olaplex and virtue products and I’ve had good luck, but this really helps clarify how do use it for optimal results. I will admit even though I have the worlds thinnest hair the first couple times I used it I was using over five times the recommended dose. 😅 Fortunately, I didn’t see any problems from this, but I didn’t do it for that long. I’m so relieved they’ve updated the directions to include conditioner! using it correctly will make it a lot more cost-effective so thank you for explaining all of this! 💗
I like using Olaplex 3, then shampoo, then K18, rinse then rinse out conditioner, then leave in hydrating products with heat protection before blow drying styling on my clients with very damaged hair. I also do a hair cut trim.
Thank you for this video❤I remember watching your first video about K18!! I will tell anyone who will listen how much it has helped my hair!!! Definitely K18 needs to sponsor you! If it wasn’t for you then I would have never knew this product existed.
I love K18! Been using since December & my hair is so healthy (I went back to blonde colour the past fall). I tried Olaplex & it was so bad for me. My hair felt waxy and looked like clumped noodles. K18 is definitely it for me, so far. My hairstylist said Olaplex is not for everyone. - I usually use the K18 detox shampoo 1st, then the regular maintenance shampoo for when I shampoo the 2nd time. Keep my hair up in a towel for several mins & then apply the K18 molecular hair mask onto my ends before fully drying it. So glad I finally found a hair routine that gives hair goals.
So happy to hear that you can use conditioner after the 4 min. My hair is very damaged from bleach, so I did not use k18 often because my hair would break so much more easily when it was left «naked»😬 now I feel like I can give k18 a new chance to help my hair rather than make the case worse😂
Thanks Abbey! I bought K18 a bit after it launched and wasn't a fan of their instructions so I never followed through with the amount of times you had to use it to start seeing results. At that time, I was still transitioning to wearing my natural curly hair so no conditioner was BEYOND concerning for me. So I never followed through. I still kept it but used Olaplex regularly as I had been for years before. I kind of stopped last year because I stopped seeing great results with Olaplex. It was just neutral. I started watching your videos a month ago including the K18 and Olaplex ones and you encouraged me to give K18 another chance. I know how to style my thick wavy/curly hair way better than before so I used the Ouai Leave In & BB Prep Invisible Oil after the 4 minutes K18 then style as normal with my curl cream a bit later (I re-wet my hair for this with a spray bottle). I had great results with this. I am planning on using it multiple times as instructed and give it another chance. Hopefully I see more than Olaplex!
so i bought ALL the k18 products after watching you talk about it for a while. i don't dye my hair but I blow dry it straight regularly and I used to do tight braids and high ponies alll the time so i have major breakage (dont do them as often thanks to your advice), esp since i have suuuper long hair, aaaand my scalp/hair is sooooo dry esp since moving up north. the detox shampoo is the best clarifying shampoo i've ever tried for my problematic af scalp (that's after trying ouai detox and briogeo charcoal shampoo, both were way too drying for me), it's too soon to tell how much i like the maintenance shampoo but so far no complaints and i have high hopes! the leave-in treatment was so amazing in just the first try, i forgot to tie up my hair when i went to bed that night. the next morning when i realized, i was so afraid to look in the mirror but dude it was actually nice so i left it down that day. second use went much better and tbh i just wanna wash my hair again just to use it again lol loving it so far to say the least! thanks for all your insight, abbey!
I used k18 for the first time a few years ago and it definitely takes several uses to see a difference. My hair got healthy so I stopped using it and I also didn’t like the no conditioner approach. I retried it after Abby’s video demonstrating how she uses it and I saw and felt an immediate difference using it this way. I love that this is protein free and I’ve always been conservative with the amount I use. I can’t recommend this enough!
I don’t apply conditioner. I simply apply a smoothing styling cream and my hair it’s soft like if I were be using mask or conditioner. I even saw that wow, really I don’t need her mask. I don’t need conditioner. I don’t need anything in that case becomes super cheap.😂😂😂😂
I wonder if it is ok to use some lamellar water or Wonder water from L'Oreal before using K18? I mean you rinse it out and it really helps to smooth the hair and prevent breakage. I'm quite obsessed with this water as my hair seems to really love it. K18 is the best but I can't always afford it..
I know everyone is singing praises to K-18, but I think you should research what works best for your hair. There's no one fix all treatment for every person's head of hair. Curlsmith and Ecoslay work for me, but they may not work for someone else. I think being aware of how your hair is feeling and looking after continuously treating it is more important.
😊 I have a relaxer & just used K18 for the 1st time. I noticed a smoothness that was a pleasant surprise! I will continue to use this product to gain the benefits!! 😊
Thank you so much for your videos. I used K18 the first time following their directions. Then I rewatched your videos and put on a conditioning mask AFTER the K18 four minutes. SO MUCH BETTER!!
Hi Abbey, thanks for this video! I sent a DM to K18 yesterday asking if k18 will still penetrate the hair if I use pre shampoo oils and they said yes as long as we use a clarifying shampoo! Also, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new Bumble & Bumble bonding oil serum!❤️
But using a clarifying shampoo after applying oil kind of defeats the purpose. You apply oil before washing your hair to stop the shampoo from overdrying the ends, so if you use a clarifying shampoo you are removing that barrier, that method doesn't make sense in this instance.
I have very thick curly hair, and I used k-18 many times. And I never had a problem with Breakage. And I Shampoo first And no condition It's just the k-18 I leave it on no other products on my hair but the k18. The next day, I washed it off just with conditioner no shampoo. And do my hair as usual and put regular product that I use. And I had very damaged hair because I relax my hair And I flat iron it and I feel like k-18 really does help my hair more then other Products that claim they do. And I don't have no breakage. So I was surprised when I saw this video that people have had Breakage on their hair. I guess it depends on how you use it. It's pricey, but it's worth it for me.
Hi Abbey, I bought K18 because of you. I noticed when I finally bought it that the recommendation for how much product to use went down too. I looked into it and they said that the new formula is more concentrated.
I bought the small bottle of k18 because it was enough to do the targeted treatment. It worked well, but I didn’t repurchase because the full size is too pricey. Now I use Olaplex no3 which is also working well, and less $ for the full size.
I used Olaplex and Redken acetic bonders for 6 months each. My hair is curly, coarse, and long. I watched your channel and decided to try K18 two months or so ago. I cannot praise this product enough and tell all my friends about it. My hair is so shiny, healthy and looks so great that I wanted to thank you. I am a convert and recently purchased both peptide shampoos and love them. Thank you Abbey!
I have mixed feelings on this product. Been using it for a few months and really haven’t noticed any difference other than my hair seems dried out. Idk
I recently purchased k18 due to ur recommendation and so far it’s helping. I finally notice my hair growing. I do it exactly how you’ve recommended so I do condition afterwards. So excited about it lol. My hair used to be long and due to breakage it’s been staying short 😩
The problem I have with k18 is that professionals say not to brush your hair when it is wet because of breakage and hair being its weakest when wet. So the problem I have is that I put k18 in my tangled hair because I don’t brush it and I feel like it is not spreading evenly throughout my hair. How can it when it is so tangled? So I cannot use conditioner or detangler before using it and I can’t brush my hair while so wet in order for it to spread properly, so how can k18 be penetrating well enough in my hair?
My problem exactly! My hair is so tangled after shampooing even though I rinse very carefully as not to rough it up. I also use a soft t-shirt and just wrap around the ends. I can't get even a wide comb through to smooth in product without losing a lot of hair! I've used 2ce and will continue by being extremely careful putting it in the best I can and skip the comb or brush. Continue with my Redkin leave-in which I love and add my curl products. Best regards to you!
I have thick frizzy hair and the no conditioner was almost a deal breaker for me. But much to my shock I actually love it without conditioner. I do use a leave in spray and styling cream but my hair has so much more lived in texture without the conditioner. I’d encourage people to use it a few times without before deciding.
I agree completely with the “no-conditioner” route. My hair is bra-strap length, highlighted, dry and frizzy and prone to breakage. I love how just the k18 makes it feel. 😊
I’m a fan of K18. It leaves my black colored hair shiny and soft. Plus I don’t have to think about avoiding certain shampoos and conditioners. I’m using it every two weeks for maintenance.
You answered the questions that I've had and hadn't been able to find answers FOR. I really appreciate the research that you've done and it makes me want to try K18 again; I'd written it off but I'm going to try it again.
Thanks for the great review and all the detail, Abbey!!! I have used k18 but it’s been a while. I’ve just purchased it again, as I’m highlighted my hair now to camouflage the incoming grays! I needed this reminder tutorial!
I dont bleach my Hair and a Almost never use heat on it. I still use k18 and I absolutely love it. My hair is very thin and weak and I think K18 has really help me with those concerns. Also my split ends almost disappears when I use it
Good to know! I don't bleach nor use heat, but I was wondering if K18 could help strengthen my hair and avoid breakage, because it is soo thin and prone to tangles that it end up getting damaged as well.
It’s really frustrating that these brands don’t upfront include all of the necessary instructions. I just used it and tried to follow the instructions on the bottle, but according to this video, I did everything wrong.
Here is a tip for weekly hair washers. Wash your hair in the sink or something. Then add the K18. Put on a plastic cap clip your hair up. Then hop in the shower. You could brush your teeth and do your “sink stuff” to optimize time. That way you don’t have to get in and out.
I have super fine, low density straight hair and after I scrunch 1 pump of K18 into my knotted, damp hair, I wait 4 minutes and the tangles are just somehow gone like magic. It must be specific to my hair-type, but it definitely takes the place of leave-in conditioner for me. My ends feel incredibly smooth afterward. It must be very different from Olaplex because their #3 (and the Redken Acidic Bonding line) left my ends very frazzled and brittle, like the cuticle was flared) I see great reviews for those products from other people, but for my hair, K18 is so much better.
I have found this as well . . . who needs conditioner when K18 takes out all my tangles and leaves my hair silky smooth? (lucky me :-). My hair is also super fine, though high porosity, not low porosity.
@@summersadie3687 we have identical hair - if you are looking for other products, I am loving Kevin Murphy's Plumping wash, rinse and Body Mass scalp spray. They are pricey, but samples are available. I pretty much cleared out most of the rest of my bathroom closet hoard after I discovered them. I still use Ouai Detox shampoo once per week though.
Thanks so much for your product suggestions. I will give them a try as I am always looking for the best shampoo, conditioner etc. for my hair type . . . which means I have a ton of products that don't work in my fine hair :-(. Do you use K18 every time you shampoo?
@@summersadie3687 no, I only use K18 once per month at most because I think my hair responds very easily to bond-builders and I had a very bad experience with Olaplex after one use in salon. I try to recognize when my hair needs moisture and when it needs strength. Most of the time it needs moisture more than protein, and when I use K18 after lightening, one K18 treatment is usually enough. If my hair feels mushy, stretchy or gummy, it needs K18 (or Redken Extreme conditioner), but if I use protein when it needs moisture, it gets brittle and straw-like. I like the Kevin Murphy Plumping line because it seems to be the right protein-moisture balance for my thin, fine, porous hair.
Thanks Heather. I really like your suggestions for hair products. I too have a problem balancing moisture vs protein in my hair care and always struggle to know when to use each. The Kevin Murphy plumping line products look like a great option. I have also limited my use of K18 to once per 4-5 weeks as my hair did not respond well when I used it more frequently. So grateful to get ideas from other "thin, fine, porous hair" gals! TYSM!
I bought K18 150ml so the big size and will buy redken bonding concentration as a 1000ml bottle. If you like a product try to get the big sizes. You will Safe so much money. But Test the things way before.
THANK YOU! For saving my hair. Thankfully I did a lot of research and watching of reviews on this product as I for sure would be a case of doing more damage to my hair using k-18 incorrectly. I have super fine, but lots, of curly prone to frizz, bleached many levels, past bra strap length thick hair. 1. K-18 needs to add you to their board of educators because if I had followed directions on their product box and website my hair would have been a dry mess. I haven’t gone without conditioner since I was maybe a tween…many years before I understood caring properly for hair with length. No chance my hair would make it through brushing without being conditioned. 2. I can’t say for sure what to attribute the big difference I’m seeing in texture the K-18 using YOUR method, or the amazing clarifying shampoo (adowa) I tried for the first time as well to prep my hair… it holy crap I thought my silky texture was gone forever. I haven’t felt my real texture of hair since I started bleaching many years ago 😢. What a surprise! I plan to keep you posted on my progress, but so far I think I’m on a positive new track! Thank you for sharing all the tips and whatever sorcery ✨ this all is 😂
I so appreciate you answering these questions although they were not my questions. Your first video was so helpful. I have had no problems using K18 with living proof, both their dry shampoo and their treatment product. I also would mention that though my hair is not damaged with bleach or from a ton of heat but that I do have a very irritated scalp and damaged doll like hair do to a medical condition called scarring alopecia. I AM NOT saying K18 is treating my medical problem but I will say has it has helped me make all of the hair healthier which has helped me hide some of the small bald spots and the kinky different hair that results from squeezing through a slightly scarred hair follicles. The pre-shampoo treatment from inkey list has also done wonders fro my scalp. I am medically treated with injections in my scalp (yes it hurts) and use whatever my dermatologist recommends but since using inkey list and K18 my hair and scalp is happier. My doctor even noted my scalp looked better. I told him I felt the inkey list salicylic acid exfoliated scalp treatment helped so much as scarring alopecia causes scalp itching and burning. Please note I have been dealing with this condition for over 10 years so I was just looking for things to help my hair feel more normal. Consult with a doctor if you also have scarring alopecia or patch test. Blessings to you all.
Thank you, Abbey ❤ I tried K18 after watching your video. I also bought the K18 detox shampoo. And I didn't use any conditioner, just styling products after I came out of the shower. Thank you for great tips and insights on the product. It IS truly amazing, it works wonders on my hair with highlights. I had previously tried Olaplex and Redken. They're very good, but definitely not amazing on my hair. Thank you again! ❤❤❤
I know you discuss this often but it is so crazy how different everyone’s hair is. I have fine and thin, little past shoulder length hair that I wouldnt describe as tangly and has only heat and mechanical damage and I LOVE k18 for how soft and manageable it makes my hair post shower without conditioner. I actually prefer the look of my hair with this rather than conditioner. I use 2 pumps. My favorite usage of this is for days I’m running late and don’t have time to use conditioner lol :)
I have gray virgin hair. When I stopped dying my hair 4 years ago I thought I would have the healthiest hair of life but that was just not the case! My gray hair is more fragile and more textured than before. It breaks easily and is frizzy, despite taking all the precautions such as silk pillowcases and scrunchies, no heat styling etc! I picked up K18 on a whim in the Sephora checkout line a few weeks ago. I noticed a huge difference on the second wash!! My hair was so smooth and didn’t get tangled as easily! My third wash was a disastrous sticky mess which was completely my fault I used way too much. I am moving into the maintenance phase now and will try using my regular conditioner after the 4 minutes next time. (For the first 6 washes I was using a lightweight leave in conditioner and a styling product after the 4 minutes) So far I love it and have ordered the full size
I have had a bottle of k18 in the WAY back of my drawer because I just didn’t like what it did to my hair. This video made me change my method and give it another try…WOW! I love how my hair feels after following your tip about conditioning after. Game changer! Thank you!
Watching this video while currently in progress with my wash day routine & towel drying, then K18, wait 4 minutes, rinse out & condition is LIFE CHANGING!! What would I do without you Abbey 😭🙌🏼
I am on the first use, and, for now I can see a significant breakage reduction (also I have to say that this is like a 'miracle' on me since I wasn't expecting this kind of result so soon)
I got a bottle and tried it once and was meh because my hair seemed kinda parched looking and I didn’t try it again. Glad to hear I can use conditioner afterwards!! Will attempt the product again and hopefully that will correct it or improve it!
Hi Abbey, Great job on concerns some people may have in using K18! I would like an alternative product for hair damage that isn't quite as expensive as K18! BTW! I was watching your video 📹 on Friday and got so caught up in watching that I didn't leave a comment. You did a tremendous job with how much you wanted to share with us all. I really appreciate this very much. I would love to get my lips done as my top lip isn't as prominent as my bottom lip. (I'm just too scared). Enjoy for what's left of your weekend 😘!
oh wow i saw your other video applying conditioner with this product and i got it all mixed up and thought you did it before the k18 mask.. thanks for this update video cause i would have continued wasting the product by applying it after conditioner... and i was also using 4 pumps. had no idea they were recommending a max of 3 pumps
even if a creator isn’t paid on, specifically, one platform, that doesn’t really invalidate what is a notable conflict of interest- that is, sponsorship for said product on another platform. it seems like that conflict is being hand-waved away in the first few minutes here as not being relevant (and certainly minimized) due to “already liking the product”. having that kind of relationship even after already forming a favorable opinion certainly can influence one’s biases toward perceiving and treating it in the public eye. this is not to imply an unreasonable bias was or is present, or some sort of nefarious motives. rather, I mean to say that it is well within the realm of possibility, regardless of how aware of it any creator might be, that a sponsored relationship on one platform can impact coverage on another. this exculpation comes off a bit disingenuous here, or at best, unaware. it’s great and I believe necessary to disclose the relationship, but I can’t help but feel icky when the potential conflict is so quickly minimized. I enjoy your videos but I think in this sort of space/industry which is so densely composed of marketing and trends, it best to share my honest feedback. kind wishes,
Tonight I tried your tip to oil the lengths of one's hair before washing and WOW! My waist-length hair was actually brushable after washing instead of a knotted wreck!
Great, thank you Abbey. This is excellent! Thanks again. For me, over time I noticed my curls near the bottom, in some areas were wonky. Realized I didnt need 3 pumps. I have fine/ med. naturally curly hair, bleach blond (from very dark brown hair). When I first started 3 was fine for about a year but after that at some point I started noticing some wonky curls. After you mentioned this today, I now feel confident to use only 2 pumps max. More savings. I would also like to mention that after 1 pump I can detangle my hair with my fingers, without pulling... I know some have said it does not detangle/ thats it is very difficult... not for me. I did try using a mask after 4 minutes and I did like it more (hydration). Most likely because I have curly 3c hair and it's bleached. I also don't towel dry. Yikes. Yet still had amazing results. Ive been using it almost 3 years now. As soon as it came it, before in Canada. Lastly, I would like to say shampoo makes a difference. I have naturally curly hair and didn't have issues with tangles even before k18. When I wash hair a day or sometimes every 3 days, I detangle easily with fingers before shampoo or during shampoo. Find a shampoo that works with your hair. That means you will have more manageable hair overall. I am saying that I feel like people who feel k18 is difficult when it comes to tangles, the whole conditioner thing, may need to edit their shampoo. I say this because I should have more tangly hair considering my hairs condition both naturally and hair coloring. I did once use Olaplex along with k18, but really I just didn't need it. Olaplex is too much work for me & k18 is doing much more & much easier/ quicker to use. Can't compare the two. Orange & apples. Using both is a waste for me. In addition, when I used Olaplex I was actually spending more because all your other products matter. With k18, I have tested various products like shampoo, styling; but k18 still makes my hair look like I did not just bleach my hair. Looks & feels healthy, strong, shiny, light & unbleached. Mind you I had been using products (repair & styling...) that worked great before k18, but there was nothing like k18 then. I still use those products except for repair which I only use k18 (I do alternate some shampoos & styling- Virtue, Moroccan oil). But those are not for bleach damage like k18. So maybe by making some minor adjustments somewhere may work out difficulties with k18. Thanks again Abbey for being on point. Great Q&A
In the beginning I thought it didn't do much for my hair, but the truth is that I have less breakage. I use 4 pumps because my hair is waist length, I wouldn't dare rinsing it out since is a pricey product so I just use a leave-in conditioner after the 4 minutes and my hair feels soft.
I started using K18 thanks to you and I love it! I also use Olaplex AND the LivingProof triple bond complex 🤭 and honestly so far so good! I don’t bleach my hair but I do use heat once a week, my hair has never looked better tbh! Love your videos! 💖🌸✨
I was one of those people that needed to pile on conditioner. But after using K18 off and on for the past couple of months I find I can get away with K18 and just the Amika Shine Rinse. No need for conditioner! My hair is just dyed to cover my grey and match my brown, so I don’t have bleach damage…just heat damage.
You explain everything very clearly. Even though I don’t know what K18 is all about, just hearing about it everywhere. I am getting the impression at it some kind of deep conditioning/repair damage / bonding agent. But I might buy it now. My hair can can do with some restoring. I have the same type of hair as yours, thick and pentyful.
🎉K-18 is a fabulous product. But just so darn EXPENSIVE for the small amount of even a full size bottle!!! African American hair is usually thick because of the curliness. I hope they can give us more as a spray on instead.
Olaplex does it for me k18 too pricey. Lips looking good, just sad bc the same way you said you look at aos for Lip products and doesn't turn out the same now girls watching you will feel the same way and só we continue to prepare unrealistic beauty standards... and BTW Lip fillers also migrate not just face
Just used it for the first time this week and OMG thank you for the recommendation. My hair is usually not soft and now it's so much tamer and softer. I did your recommendation of waiting for 4 minutes and then conditioning. It worked great for me. Thanks for sharing this great product with us.
And after the conditioner, after K18, do you rinse your hair?
@@Corransso after applying the k18 and waiting four minutes, I put the conditioner in and rinse as usual :)
@@Wut988 thank you!
Do you rinse after the k18 and before conditioning or do you just go straight to conditioner after k18?
@@Wut988 So you apply K18 on towel dried hairs then K18 for 4 min then rinse off conditioner then rinse off? But won't you be washing out K18 as well? It's expensive af, I dont wanna waste it
I'm so desperate to order this but I've banned myself from buying hair products until I use up my old ones and I still have loads of olaplex number 3 left 😢 lord send me strength 🙏😂
Rethink using up the Olaplex!…Google the “Olaplex Lawsuit”…#3 ruined my hair!!…you can get a refund from them!
I’m doing this same thing right now!! I’ve bought way too many hair products!
I've gone through mine and found the bottles with the least amount left and temporarily taken away all the fuller bottles so I can start using things up instead of having 100 half bottles 🤣
Same here lol 😂
Sephora something has it free insider points.
Love the comparison to a ladder. Very helpful in visualizing.👍👍😊
Should someone with no hair damage use these? And if so how often?
@@lucastamaio thank you for your detailed reply!! My hair concerns are it’s quite fine and recovering from hormonal hair loss a year or so ago. So I want it to be as strong as possible. I don’t color it often and if I ever do for events I go a shade darker and ask for gentle dyes. I don’t use heat except for events I’ll blow dry it on a medium setting. So it’s not very damaged but it is waist length with a small amount of split ends that I get trimmed when they become noticeable. I just want to keep it strong and prevent breakage and excess shedding from happening again.
@@JustaregularoldplumbusThese are not products which prevent shedding, even the lady in the video said it.
Ah, so with really damaged hair you could switch between the two to repair the entire ladder. Nice
To be fair k18 has a lot of amazing results so it’s not surprising or unreasonable for someone to love it enough to talk about it without being sponsored. I really appreciate that your channel is not just QVC where you try out new products all the time. It shows that you promote genuinely good products. I’ve been impressed by all the products you’ve recommended that I’ve tried out!
but she says she is working with k18
Agreed! Same here!
I use olaplex and k18 for over a year and love them together. I have fragile curly hair that never grows but have gained more length in the past year than in the previous five years. I use a leave in conditioner after the k18 has been on for four minutes and have had some of my best hair days that way. 😊
What leave in?
@@renadempsey842 Hi I use Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil leave in conditioner and Nexus humectress. Then curl cream and gel. It has been great 👍🏽
Do you color and/or heat style your hair? Also a fragile curly here, but not sure if this would actually help.
What leave in conditioner do you use ?
hey! how do you use k18 and olaplex together?
I just ordered my 3rd bottle of k18, I love it a lot! I do use it as you recommend, by washing, microfiber-towel-drying, lather and apply k18, wait 5 minutes (just in case!), then conditioning, then rinsing. It works for me! Edited to add that I split my hair into two parts and use two pumps per side. Also, I did not like using this product before I found out you can add conditioner after, because my hair didn't feel soft and nice without it. It definitely makes a difference!
Can I ask, do you add conditioner straight on top of the K18 or do you rinse K18 out first and then condition?
They should make you a brand ambassador. You have provided more information and recommendations than the manufacturer!! Thank you!
Thanks for your channel as well❤
pro tip- you live near a Sam's Club the larger 1.7oz bottle is available for $50!! Normally $75.
i just bought the 5 oz at Sams for less than $70!
🎉
Update? How do you feel your hair after all this time?
Same!!!! So sad honestly 😪😪
Exactly!
Same! Just K-18 after the 4 minutes is perfect on my fine straight hair, and feels great.
If you are questioning the process, I’d stick with it!
how exactly do you use it? :)
Same. I use k18, olaplex and I use rosemary oil twice a week. My bleached, snapped hair is now long and healthy.
Thanks!
❤️❤️
@@larissagemmer-block3125ho do you use it ?
@@squrglethat still means we can use both together right?
If yes please suggest how to use them together in one wash
@@gumiho6075k18 mask and the olaplex leave in or bonding oil for benefits of both bond builder ingredients. the k18 mask is always first and left in
@@gumiho6075 yes you can!
All I know is my hair is soft af!

YOUR HAIR COLOR IS SO SO GORGEOUS
Thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing this!
💖💖💖
K18 did nothing for my hair also. On the flip side Olaplex 3 does wonders for my hair.
I hated K18. I had extreme breakage after only 1 use. Using a conditioner afterwards wouldn’t of corrected the breakage it caused
p.s. thank you for your honesty on sponsorship.
Hey! May i ask how often do you use k18?
I got k18 in 2020 and recently ran out and wish my hairstylist at the time actually told me how to use it, this is so helpful!
so i bought ALL the k18 products after watching you talk about it for a while. i don't dye my hair but I blow dry it straight regularly and I used to do tight braids and high ponies alll the time so i have major breakage (dont do them as often thanks to your advice), esp since i have suuuper long hair, aaaand my scalp/hair is sooooo dry esp since moving up north.
the detox shampoo is the best clarifying shampoo i've ever tried for my problematic af scalp (that's after trying ouai detox and briogeo charcoal shampoo, both were way too drying for me), it's too soon to tell how much i like the maintenance shampoo but so far no complaints and i have high hopes!
the leave-in treatment was so amazing in just the first try, i forgot to tie up my hair when i went to bed that night. the next morning when i realized, i was so afraid to look in the mirror but dude it was actually nice so i left it down that day. second use went much better and tbh i just wanna wash my hair again just to use it again lol loving it so far to say the least!
thanks for all your insight, abbey!
I conditioned last night after the 4 minutes. My hair feels so much better!! Thanks for letting us know we can use conditioner!!
Can you use conditioner at all with it? Seemed to make my hair worse
Your hair looks so much healthier !!
Abbey, you look so gorgeous today!…thanks for such an informative video on K18!
K18 is coming out with a hair oil! I would love for you to review it when it comes out, I can't wait to try it!!
I’m a fan of K18. It leaves my black colored hair shiny and soft. Plus I don’t have to think about avoiding certain shampoos and conditioners. I’m using it every two weeks for maintenance.
I bit the bullet and bought the mask and the mist last week. Can’t wait to try it. This was a great pre-use video 🤗
It would nice if you would do a video for 50 plus women struggling with fine, thinning, breaking hair. Thank you.
TYSM!
Would love to see a q&a video like this about Epres! Sending lots of love your way ❤
I bought K18 150ml so the big size and will buy redken bonding concentration as a 1000ml bottle.
I am a stylist love your videos. You’re very educated too much protein can definitely hair off..becomes bitter and dry.
Redken has a version of K18 that is MUCH cheaper. No idea if it is any good though?
@@twoleftfeet9626 Thank you so much. I have a three step system from that brand. I will look into that. Thanks again!
Is not worth it
oh wow i saw your other video applying conditioner with this product and i got it all mixed up and thought you did it before the k18 mask.. thanks for this update video cause i would have continued wasting the product by applying it after conditioner... and i was also using 4 pumps. had no idea they were recommending a max of 3 pumps
even if a creator isn’t paid on, specifically, one platform, that doesn’t really invalidate what is a notable conflict of interest- that is, sponsorship for said product on another platform. it seems like that conflict is being hand-waved away in the first few minutes here as not being relevant (and certainly minimized) due to “already liking the product”. having that kind of relationship even after already forming a favorable opinion certainly can influence one’s biases toward perceiving and treating it in the public eye. this is not to imply an unreasonable bias was or is present, or some sort of nefarious motives. rather, I mean to say that it is well within the realm of possibility, regardless of how aware of it any creator might be, that a sponsored relationship on one platform can impact coverage on another. this exculpation comes off a bit disingenuous here, or at best, unaware.
it’s great and I believe necessary to disclose the relationship, but I can’t help but feel icky when the potential conflict is so quickly minimized.
Just used it for the first time this week and OMG thank you for the recommendation. My hair is usually not soft and now it's so much tamer and softer. I did your recommendation of waiting for 4 minutes and then conditioning. It worked great for me. Thanks for sharing this great product with us.
