The Resident Evil 2 and 3 Gamecube releases are technically REMASTERS and arguably the "best" way to play them. It's not immediately obvious because the games already used pre-rendered backgrounds, but all of the 3D models have been upscaled and smoothed out and the backgrounds are also higher resolution. All of the twitchy PS1 artifacting has been removed, and the 3D models now blend much better with the pre-rendered backgrounds.

I was surprised Scott didn't know about this. But yes the gamecube one's are the best way to play them or dreamcast they are also pretty clean and sharp

I think Dragon's Dogma is the perfect example of a game that had massive success from a re-release. It was a pretty niche title that didn't make any major waves during its release of the PS3/360 era but got a new lease on life with it's port to PC and newer consoles. It was because of that new lease on life we're even getting a chance at a sequel 11(+) years later
Sometimes I wish arcades stayed in style. Not just because I’d love more arcades, but imagine how powerful a modern day arcade cabinet would be since the cost and size would allow them to basically make a big computer that can run anything

You can tell how passionate Scott is about a topic when he isn't super over the top the entire video and takes a second to be serious
Has Scott ever covered the kingdom hearts series? So many rereleases and remakes, many of which added a lot of value. Kingdom hearts 1 had a rerelease in Japan shortly after with new features and a fully remade 3d version of the gameboy game Chain of Memories. The game was then was fully retextured with some added content for PS3 including all of the final mix changes for the first time in an international release. Then they did something very similar with the second game and another sidegame. They then made them playable in another rerelease collection for ps4 with both 1.5 + 2.5. Then they had another weird remake/remaster with KH 2.8. Then they they released all of that in a compilation also with kh3 and probably rereleased all of the above a few extra times.
Don't forget Re:Coded which is just a remake of 1 but for nintendo ds with the addition of the data side story
@@Vanity0666 don't know how I forgot re:coded. The best command deck mechanics in all of KH, and it's a DS remake of a mobile game. Shame the DS titles were never included in any of the compilations.

Well, we have Sonic P06 now, which not only fixes but improves the gameplay. Still not a fan of the artstyle but ChaosX’s work is downright admirable.

To be honest - Tetris & Dr. Mario had a lot more in common with the Game Boy titles, from music to graphics. They feel a lot more in that vein than the NES.

Honestly. I'm happy they don't change the game too much or at all. Remakes are hit or misses since they hire some other company and they don't have the respect of the original.

When you talk about older style of games around the 29 minute mark I agree, I love ps2 and original Xbox graphics and their games, timesplitters is a trilogy I still love and I play halo 1 and 2 on the mcc in the original graphics and yes I love playing them in HD to see those dated graphics even more. I’m not as nostalgic towards 8 or 16 bit graphics in fact I think it’s over done today. Xbox 360 graphics with its ridiculous bloom, bump mapping and waxy look is also a favourite of mine, and that’s because those eras is what I played through as a kid/teenager. 2000-2010 was the best decade for me and I still play all those games to this day

The GTA Gameboy games were the original MS-DOS and Windows versions before the PS2 Rockstar game was ever a thought. The original GTA was a 2D birdseye view game from 1997, and GTA2 was from 1999
11:57 Link is left handed in original twilight princess. They flipped the whole game to right handed for Wii to accommodate the majority of users. That’s why wii controls aren’t usable on Wii U
Poor excuse if we’re being honest. TPHD flips the game when you play hero mode so Nintendo could’ve easily supported motion controls

i lean more towards the original n64 version for the original vision uncensored, paired with a brawler64 controller it makes n64 games feel easier to get into because the controller is close enough to an xbox series x controller.

in defense of ff& REMAKE, the "remake" is a literal subtitle. as its the same story, being remade by the villain, so he can win at the end. so its, in truth, a sequel that tells the same overall story as the original, but with extra stuff to spruce up the world.
with rebirth going even harder on that line.

Gotta slightly disagree with your take on RE4 HD versions. They look so much more crisp. I went back to the Wii version and it was like looking at a blurry, pixelated mess.
I know it just leaked that Bethesda is remaking ES oblivion, and I am super hyped because that’s always been my favorite game, but I have always dreamed of a Morrowind remake.

We should differentiate remakes further between actual remakes, those that are as close to the original as possible, and reimaginations for remakes that alter more than what was absolutely necessary and actually create a new game that shares the base with the original but added or changed too much to be a remake anymore
I am looking forward when in the near future, after the obligatory remake of the remake of the remake... of everything, a new trend will start and everyone will be making demakes just to sell something new.

Yes, it can feel wrong to pay 40+ bones for a game old enough to buy beer.
But i'd rather support the developers who got to remain employed due to being hired to work on this,
then give the industry more excuses to just let old games die forever.

Why are you showing the PS3 version of Shadow of Colossus for your point about "they only made it widescreen" ? Bluepoint put a ton of work into getting that game to run 60 fps on a PS3 and sourcing higher quality assets. It was quite a feat at the time, and it's nice to have a pure version of the game with higher fidelity and performance, prior to them doing the full 1:1 remake.
You mean PS4, right? The PS3 version was just a bare minimum port.

There was a lot of tech editorial and Q&A at the time about their process of sourcing the uncompressed assets to achieve a non-upscaled HD, to go from 480 to 720, without any revisionism. Expanding the visible playfield, without stretching the aspect ratio, was a new standard. Lastly, the actual performance was greatly improved on one of the most unorthodox system architectures in console history, not by brute force, but by code optimization.

I love hearing Scott talk about an HD relelease with hope for something better than the game cube game. Instead we got the worst of both worlds.
HD rereleases were great if they priced it right I wouldn't of ever gotten into Metal Gear if it wasnt for the legacy collection for ps3.
