Bad engine mounts are a big enemy of exhausts, failures of the flexible joints can be traced to excessive engine movement.

This is excellent timing, my LW Ford Focus was recently diagnosed as having sagging engine mount/s. I drove it today and I noticed some weird handling characteristics coming from the left front tyre, could be totally random or tyre related, but yeh, when the engine is sagging it could affect things such as the anlge of the drivshaft etc.

Great video. One of the first mechanic things I ever did was with my neighbor who was thankfully mechanically inclined and worked on his 60s Datsun convertible, 70s Nova, 90s MB SL500 and 20s BMW 535. He helped me change my motor/tranny mounts on my MK6 VW GLI and I learned and he saved me about $700. I have since replaced those mounts with 034 Motorsport solid rubber (not poly) mounts. I love investing in middle market tools and learning to fix my car, learning all its systems and enjoying my car ownership experience. But unfortunately I will have to pay $1k-$1.4K for labor and $600/parts for chain stretch on my high mileage car. But I always see it as learning how things work and excited to tackle bigger jobs across whatever cars I own in the future.

Good explanation! On my Acura, 3 engine mounts are covered with rubber boots, so I can't see the mount's rubber. I did acceleration test in D and R and engine had a usual movement. I do hear clunking(?) sound when I put my car from P to R, D and vice versa. Also when driving from 2nd and downshifting to 1st, I feel engine brake which is accompanied by a sound(thump maybe). Transmission mount is visible and has some cracks around the perimeter, but I don't see how this could be the issue.

That broken drivers side mount is pretty typical on NA/NB Miatas. If you used stock ones and go autocross/track it will likely break again soon. Mazda Comp engine mounts aren't too harsh and last a lot longer.

Did the same job when I was replacing my NB1 clutch and flywheel. Also found the driver side one completely torn, also at about 160k miles, exactly like in this video. I had the pleasure of also replacing the exhaust manifold, which made it WAY easier to change that driver side mount.
For replacement I went with the OEM Mazda Competition mounts which seem like a good compromise between performance and NVH levels.

Back in the late 60’s early 70’s a broken driver side mount on Chevy’s would allow the motor to pick up so much it would hold the throttle open. Also if a car came in with a broken distributor cap, you knew it had a broken mount. The replacement was designed to to limit engine travel if the mount broke. They were also a pain to install

They claimed that you can 'reclaim' or 'free up' (not add) 10-15tq. I had no way to measure that, but it did feel a tiny bit snappier off the line. That is, until the polyurethane inserts in the lower dogbone disappeared and the extra flexing of the engine blew out the exhaust flex pipe......

With the upmost respect , honestly I am not yanking your chain or anyone....
The manuals for torque wrench kits don’t remind us of service manuals where it shows say ... 14 - 22 ft- lbs for instance.
The first designation is actually for WET torque and the second for DRY torque settings.
If the hardware has oil , grease , water or some combination choose the first . It is friction that holds the treads but when wet ( even a small amount) the bolt will grab tighter so in fact , it holds higher than the setting is and would end up very close to the DRY spec .
Too many people end up snapping the wheel studs due to over torquing because the hardware is wet and choosing the DRY spec .
I hope this doesn’t insult anyone and I am not trying to embarrass anyone
Love the videos , they are very helpful

      I love this comment!!!
I come from the German car repair world. The spec is the spec. If the bolt is lubed you still torque to that amount.
But this makes perfect sense. It just makes me uneasy, when there is no qualification haha.
      Great comment

I replaced the mounts in my GTI and there was some minor harshness introduced, which got very noticeable after a single mass flywheel was installed. Lots of low RPM clutch chatter harshness and an idle like a 1030's vintage farm tractor. Weird that there is almost no added vibration.

On the torque specifications there are two different torque settings you did not torque the bolts correctly. The 1st torque settings is to get everything lined up correctly and then the 2nd torque settings are the final torque settings. The torque settings are usually two different settings and that isn't so you have two options it's to torque ( 1st settings) bolts in place then the (2nd settings) are the main and final torque settings . If you don't follow the directions for proper installation of any part the part isn't going to last very long.

Technically the miata of the same year had a slightly smaller engine, but about 20 more HP. It wouldn't be a bad way to go, especially with all the supporting mods that miata's supposedly have available, except my cabrio is FWD, and Miata's are RWD... so that would be its own tiny nightmare...
