  • Reviewing the Honor Magic 5 Pro, a flagship smartphone to rival Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra with its night vision camera, Snapdragon gaming prowess and best-in-class battery life. I've been testing the Honor Magic 5 Pro as my full-time phone so here's my verdict, and please subscribe for more unboxing and reviews of the greatest 2023 mobiles!
Grab your own right here: bit.ly/3nVLdLe
Vs the 4 Pro from last year, Honor has packed in a fair few upgrades. Performance has been boosted with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 running the show. You also have Sony's IMX878 camera sensor, which can capture natural looking photos even in low light and dodgy conditions. There's no 8K video option but the Magic 5 Pro is on par with many flagship rivals for its camera tech.
Gamers will enjoy the smooth experience on Genshin Impact and other big Android titles. Magic OS however can be a wee bit shonky at times, which is a shame given the premium price. That grumble aside, the Honor Magic 5 Pro offers a solid package for under £1000, making it cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Just not by much!

Maybe isn't sponsored , but should be kind of agreement between company and blogger, because you can't have for a review a phone that is not officially on sale in UK at the moment. :) DOn't get me wrong, review it's really good, but it's more about personal impressions, not too many hardware tests, no screen test for pulse-with modulation, no real battery test . It's more like a share of experience than a full review! (:

  • @101_budgies
    @101_budgies 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I own this phone and it's decent overall. To mitigate some of the crap stuff install a third party launcher like nova. However, one thing unforgivable is the display refresh rate which when set to high forces all apps to run at 120hz, even ones that do not support it. Try it, set the refresh rate to high in the display settings and then watch a filmed video in Google photos. It's jerky as hell. You have to change the display settings back to dynamic on the refresh rate before doing that. A major pain in the backside and a software quirk that Honor need to fix. Of course you could just leave the display refresh rate set to dynamic all the time which will automatically switch it, but it rarely selects 120hz so when scrolling through your apps and transitions they are not as smooth as they should be, and we all like 120hz smooth don't we?

This phone is impressively fast. I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and returned it for this Honor Magic5 Pro, and I'm not disappointed.
I bought it based on its DXOMark rating, and the photo and video quality are much better than the Samsung. It's also super smooth, and I love Honor's custom UI-it's clear and has everything you need.
The only downside for me is the ergonomics; there's a noticeable camera bump, making the phone top-heavy, and I find it too thin. A nice leather case solved the issue for me, but it's something to be aware of.
In summary, go for it, especially since it's cheaper than the Samsung.

I once had an Honor 8 lite for those who don't remember I'm talking iPhone 7 times
it was just amazing I doubt if it was any more expensive than 200 USD and it never ever lagged, hanged or lacked any software feature
the cameras were quite good (better than some 48 mp cameras now) and the heat management was just amazing
it is still working and never died and it basically was an amazing phone for the price
later I bought more expensive phones from other brands and they didn't bring back the experience
I think Samsung S series and Pixels are just the best Android phones you could buy but if you don't have the money go for OnePlus or Nothing
and if your an iPhone user you better stick with it or just pick a Samsung

One thing all reviewers miss is depreciation and resale value for these chinese brands, yes the S23 Ultra costs more, however it will be worth WAY more when you sell it a year later or Trade it in. You don't really save any money with Honor, Oppo, Xiaomi phones etc that cost near a grand once you factor in complete cost of ownership after sale, and you get poorer service and less updates

      s21 ultra released at £1200
new now £800. second hand £305-400.

Offers the same updates as the Pixel, so 3 Android upgrades and 5 years security. Like most Chinese phones you will get about 5/6 updates a year, after the initial couple of updates after launch, but if the phone is working well then that is fine. Probably a matter of taste, but coming from OxygenOS, to me MagicOS is mostly a step down. I get random device locks (lock screen kicks in), a fair share of bloatware (okay) and HONOR OS-integrated crapware (not okay) like H. SHARE, H. CONNECT, H. ID, YOYO, none of which add functionality or can be hidden 🤢 to make matters worse, the Magic5 Pro for some reason has raised little to no interest in the XDA community (despite superb hardware) so little rooting/ROM support so far :/

I've not been a fan of Samsung for a while. didn't like Samsung apps and iPhone clone lack of options. my current phone, Xperia 1ii is getting a few to many isues. lost confidence in Sony, too little support. for £500 less than a Samsung S23 ultra, this is worth the compromise, especially if I get the "freebies" for pre registering interest.
I'll probably still get this and just run a 3rd party launcher or custom ROM, don't want Samsung /iPhone, Sony have bad support. this ticks the boxes, with some compromises, but good enough.

I have a funny feeling that all Chinese phones are made by one company. They all share similar specs, design and share the same bugs, like Google feed not showing when swiping to the left, overzealous app killing and battery optimisation. If you try out their display units, whether it is in a Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei or Honor store, the feeling you get is one of sameness.
