Nice, that was a great comparison. The one thing I dislike about pretty much all smartphone camera videos is the kind of jitteriness when panning across things. I don't know why, but none of the phones here did a particularly good job of panning. While I'm not a fan of iPhones, I think they're the only ones which can pan without that skippy jitteriness. All 3 phones are truly great! I feel the Samsung came on top here though. I was really expecting the Honor to do better, due to that top DXO mark! But you don't have to take a photo, if the camera says to shot with night mode on the S23 Ultra. Hit the half moon shape off, and you'll get a great shot with no lag in shutter.
Honor Magic 5 Pro video 4K as blurry as 2K-2.5K (same story, 4K on my Huawei P40 Pro is equal to FullHD on other phones, Nothing Phone (1)'s 4K video is much more sharper). 4K should be crispy sharp, but it seems Huawei/Honor STILL uses pixel binning for unkown purpose.
Samsung is at top 👌..Xiaomi's performance is unexpected..honor is just ok..but Ben you are the BEST..you are providing so many permutations and combinations..
How lol? Samsung looks worst by being so blurry and painting like. Honor has too much yellow cast and softening but its image seems more useable than samsung. Xiaomi actually more likeable than the rest.
Great review as always! Would love to see a video where you compare the software features for photo / video editing on different android flavours / brands, as i feel like the overall camera performance for everyday users is good enough on all mid and high end phones nowadays. I have been with OnePlus for the past years and would be interested what other brands offer in terms of additional features.
As a S22 Ultra owner thats one thing I don't like, the editing features and filters just feel lame on Samsung's. Doesn't even have a proper Vignette option

imagine a phone with lossless zoom like on the xperia 1 IV, huge sensors and variable aperture like on the mate 50 pro. Now that's endgame phone camera for me. Then imagine using gcam on those, yikes man getting goosebumps
That's exactly why DXOMark can no longer be trusted especially in ranking the honor magic 5 pro tops in camera performance... Even in other reviews I've watched the videos are jittery and over pixelated, the color reproduction is far from accurate and overall the software doesn't match the hardware. Even you said so the software needs work.. So how did DXOMark give it top marks with software like that. Looks great on paper but actual performance is not as good. Thanks Ben for a side to side comparison!
Very Good Comparison video... After seeing your footage of Thailand I think I might take a short vacation there sometime this year 😉 I was gonna buy the Honor Magic 5 Pro but managed to get a good deal on the S23 Ultra 512 GB (Black) with the Galaxy Buds2 Pro here in the U.K.
Can I ask you a question? Have you ever had any connection issues with other phones etc? I had with the Honor magic 4 Pro and have returned it to my phone supplier in the UK. ( Three)
I like the Honor magic 5 pro between these. It has the purest image quality in lowlight when you cropped in. All are good though and the main reason i would go for it is the shutter speed and focus. It generally shoots with a fast shutter speed and the focus is also better than the imx989 phones. I tried it out with moving subjects and it is really good at that relative to other flagships i tried. Also it has less noise than the Xiaomi 13 pro in indoor and lowlight photos. The s23 ultra is very balanced overall but I prefer the main sensor from the other 2
Have been a fan to you channel for many years, glad to see you visit BKK. Enjoy your stay. PS. It's funny that you have the sample pics of our infamous messy cable in the city.
Excellent comparison Ben! I believe many people are struggling on which one to buy among these 3 (or 4 if including X90 Pro+). S23 U may have firmware updated since it has been launched earlier and hence more stable.
Each has pros and cons and depends on what you need. 80% of my photos and videos are with the primary lens, so ultra-wide and zoom are pleasant but optional. So my choice would be based on the wide-angle, and subjectively I prefer the Xiaomi 13P, as I like the look. I then have to look at the whole package, and in the UK, the Honor and Xiaomi are £300 less than the S23U (12GB) and therefore compete more with the S23+ in pricing. As I do not use an s-pen, that £300 makes the S23U the first to go. Honor has a 3D face unlock and the best display out there (PWM dimming included), so Honor would be my choice of the three. I will await the OPPO Find X6 Pro and Huawei before a final call.
@@andyH_England Hopefully they will sell because i saw the graph of their smart phone business revenue is again increasing slowly after the launch of Mate-50-pro, I have used Samsung and Iphone but after using Huawei P40 pro now i don't want to change the brand but.... :(
Ben ignore the haters, you are the GOAT of these type of comparisons. I have a controversial opinion about the creamy bokeh at 7:59, for shots of people I think the bokeh enhances the shot, but for shots of things I often end up thinking that the bokeh is just missed focus. I wonder if this is due to the fact that the bokeh effect we see on phones is a mix of natural and software whereas on DSLR Cameras it's all natural. I Either way my eye is drawn to the crispness of the S23 Ultra shot. Thanks for all your hard work in making these videos. Could you include a comparison of moving animals or people in your next comparison? It's the one thing I think is letting my S23 Ultra down, I just can't get a good shot of a dog or person walking etc....
It's only software when using portrait mode, otherwise it's from the lens. But sometimes the lens isn't fully optimised and you may get shallow focus planes or distorted edges etc .
All three are pretty good in good lighting conditions. And all three are good at selfies. I guess they have similar camera modules and its obvious on what datasets to train. But in low light you can dafinitely see the difference. Samsung is more versatile. And it looks like it just have more resources in tweaking different types of shots. On the close 2nd place is Xiaomi in my opinion. And Honor is close 3rd.
Huge amount of bots and Samsung or Xiaomi supporters here are funny 😂.. I was taking this w/ a grain of salt about DXOMark putting Honor in 1st place.. Turns out Honor deserve it! We clearly see more details in every shot (I'm watching in a 42" 4K TV and I'm a photographer as well. Differences are minimum but Honor takes the prize. Yes it loses to Samsung when you zoom +30x, but who cares.. I'm using a S22 and I used a zoom at this level maybe twice.. X13 Pro is the worse regarding details, period. Would LOVE to see a comparison between Honor 5 Pro / Vivo X90Pro+ and Mi 11 Ultra......
Ben, as always congratulations. I was thrilled with this one-inch sensor but in the end, at night the shots are unrealistic, too much light. in the end the difference with a competitor sensor is a little more depth of field and the natural boke effect. From my point of view it doesn't seem like the famous game changer. Is it true that xiaomi doesn't have hdr in portrait shots? Thank you .
I think the Xiaomi has more capabilities. The sensor is great, especially in low light or when bokeh is needed. The different Leica filters are interesting. The sensor does not need kind of 'over sharpening'.
Been loving your videos for a year or so, keep going! I believe the mic in the Honor tries to capture audio that the camera is shooting when you zoom, so audio around the phone is almost non existent.
Great and fast work!... I wasn't expecting a magic 5 pro comparison so soon. It's hard to choose, if you want the best software and image processing like director's mode, switching between all lens, more soft transition, audio quality and zoom It's S23 Ultra. If you are more in to one sensor for most of the time with great quality and stable video, almost professional deep of field, and you really don't care for selfie video and exposure issues than the incomprehensibly expensive 13 Pro is you choice. Magic 5 pro is doing great, it's really Magic, some things as to be fixed like audio in yours examples but it's impressive. Thanks for your hard work. 👍
The Xiaomi 13 Pro in the UK is £300 less than the same 12GB S23U, so not sure where you live, but that remark about expensive is not across the board. In fact, it could be said that in the UK, the S23U is "incomprehensibly expensive". I expect the Honor to be similar to the Xiaomi and also the upcoming OPPO Find X6 pro. They compete at the same price as the S23+ over here!
Honors audio at 10x zoom is the audio zoom feature. Probably can be deactivated or should be deactivatable in settings. Samsung Galaxy s23 Ultra by default is also doing that btw. Also I did not get the video part as zoom buttons are available on Honor aswell to switch directly. Why Honor only allows switching between front and back cams on Honor 70 and not the flagships is really really odd.
Ben's hanging around where I usually go. Phrom Phong area near Sukhumvit 24. Go to Jodd Fairs on the weekends. 05:48 - I see you visited Angel's Smoothie stand. Don't forget try the 16 baht boat noodles in the Victory Monument area. See you there Ben!
@ben's gadget reviews I like the xiaomi 13pro phone, but low light and night time photography is important for me too. I've noticed in many other reviews too that xiaomi pictures turn out very dark at night. So I want to ask, did you shoot them in Leica authentic or Leica vibrant mode? And did you put it in dedicated night mode? How does that compare? More insight in this aspect would allow me to make a final decision on which one to get :) Thanks!
I'm gonna wait to see how the mate 60 gonna deal with that "contrast thing" [IF it gonna get imx989] and decide between honor /samsung /huawei cause xiaomi still to do some homework with the software pic process... PS.: is there any specific reason why the s23 & magic5 changes the voice volume while video rec and changing lenses??
Awesome comparison Ben, I'm still rocking a UK exynos s22 ultra, really surprised me how much the camera has improved in the s23 ultra. Maybe a combination of the new lenses and the Snapdragon processing, but everything seems way more polished (especially night-time videos, which frankly suck on the s22 ultra). But, I bought the s22 ultra outright and plan to keep it for at least 3 generations so hopefully the s25 ultra is that much better again haha
Download camera assistant and turn off auto lens switching because sometimes you think you chose the 10x telephoto but it's actually the main cam the ai is choosing for you. Best to turn it off so you can use what you choose.
You'd think the other phones already have their video camera switching ready to go. Turns out that's not the case. They should really fix that. Still Xiaomi is nicer, Samsung is better and Honor is brighter.
@ben's gadget reviews I'm using s23ultra, pixel7pro nd 14promax I felt pixel7pro is best for main camera photography.. Also upto 30x digital zoom is versatile Regarding s23ultra, photography improved dan s22ultra nd video recording is almost similar to 14promax Ma concern is, if i go for honor magic 5pro, can it satisfy me in overall experience wen compared to this 3phones
Hi Ben, just a small tip: it's not the 'fastest aperture' but 'biggest aperture'. Your shutterspeed can be fast (or not), but not your aperture. :-) Awesome video nonetheless! Thank you for all the great content over the past years, I really enjoy it.
@@thijsvw and why it's called faster aperture is because what a slower or smaller aperture lens can do with slower shutter speed it can do with faster shutter speed.
Ben, I follow you for a long time already. You we're standing out of the crowd by being yourself and not focusing on animations or things like visuals. You we're just yourself. Dont waste your time with fancy editing. We're here because of you, not advanced final cut moves. More you - less editing. ( I want to add that im referring to future videos. What color science did you use for the X13 Pro(Authentic or Vibrant)? Quite impressed with X13 Pro especially its natural bokeh from just having bigger sensor. The color science is quite there too, almost no edits or color tweaking necessary. Also, KUDOS to you for bringing all those gadgets with you in those streets. That took guts!
why not including X90 pro+??? would like to have it comparing to Honor. Ps. That is not power cables... it is telecom cable. Power cables are either on top of the poles or now actually moved underground.

Great comparision. That food ham ham. I'm loving my S23U.
Now this is what I wanna see. Does no.1 rank of Magic 5 Pro on DXOmark really matter. Tnx Ben for this content!
Early
thank you, I have been waiting this video for weeks^^
@ben's gadget reviews
I like the xiaomi 13pro phone, but low light and night time photography is important for me too. I've noticed in many other reviews too that xiaomi pictures turn out very dark at night.
So I want to ask, did you shoot them in Leica authentic or Leica vibrant mode? And did you put it in dedicated night mode? How does that compare?
More insight in this aspect would allow me to make a final decision on which one to get :)
Thanks!
Use LEICA Vibrant mode for brightened up night photos
@@shrees7560 Do you know any site or video where we can see both modes compared? (for low light/night shots)
@@wouter1104 gsmarena
I like how xiaomi shoots, his style.
Awesome video 🙏 thank you brother for you hard work
I'm gonna wait to see how the mate 60 gonna deal with that "contrast thing" [IF it gonna get imx989] and decide between honor /samsung /huawei cause xiaomi still to do some homework with the software pic process...
PS.: is there any specific reason why the s23 & magic5 changes the voice volume while video rec and changing lenses??
It's subject focus / audio zoom . It tries to enhance what you've zoomed into; obviously this doesn't lend well to the voice behind the camera lol
Try if you can sell it for 600usd , s23 ultra is a wrothy upgrade
Download camera assistant and turn off auto lens switching because sometimes you think you chose the 10x telephoto but it's actually the main cam the ai is choosing for you. Best to turn it off so you can use what you choose.
You'd think the other phones already have their video camera switching ready to go. Turns out that's not the case. They should really fix that. Still Xiaomi is nicer, Samsung is better and Honor is brighter.
Overall s23ultra is best?
Most polished and versatile, yes. But I like other main cameras better
@ben's gadget reviews I'm using s23ultra, pixel7pro nd 14promax
I felt pixel7pro is best for main camera photography.. Also upto 30x digital zoom is versatile
Regarding s23ultra, photography improved dan s22ultra nd video recording is almost similar to 14promax
Ma concern is, if i go for honor magic 5pro, can it satisfy me in overall experience wen compared to this 3phones
Please have a camera comparison between the Huawei Mate 50 Pro and Honor Magic 5
Excellent review man you deserve better 😊🙏
Hi Ben, just a small tip: it's not the 'fastest aperture' but 'biggest aperture'. Your shutterspeed can be fast (or not), but not your aperture. :-) Awesome video nonetheless! Thank you for all the great content over the past years, I really enjoy it.
Well well well do your research first mate then criticize
@@guptaankur16 what do you mean?
@@thijsvw and why it's called faster aperture is because what a slower or smaller aperture lens can do with slower shutter speed it can do with faster shutter speed.
Ok thanks for the info!
@@guptaankur16 what is aperture?
The best channel when comes to camera review.
Praiser here again.😊
Ben, I follow you for a long time already. You we're standing out of the crowd by being yourself and not focusing on animations or things like visuals. You we're just yourself. Dont get caught in the narritive that a good youtuber has to bring advanced editing and visuals. Please just stay with the kind of videos which you did before. Dont waste your time with fancy editing. We're here because of you, not advanced final cut moves. More you - less editing. ( I want to add that im referring to future videos. Just to prevent you to go down the rabbit hole of fancy editing )
Than you
What color science did you use for the X13 Pro(Authentic or Vibrant)? Quite impressed with X13 Pro especially its natural bokeh from just having bigger sensor. The color science is quite there too, almost no edits or color tweaking necessary.
Also, KUDOS to you for bringing all those gadgets with you in those streets. That took guts!
I used vibrant
Thanks, how do you compare the camera of Vivo X90 Pro Plus and Honor Magic 5 Pro?
why not including X90 pro+??? would like to have it comparing to Honor.
Ps. That is not power cables... it is telecom cable. Power cables are either on top of the poles or now actually moved underground.
Really interesting how flagship Android phones have these really nice cameras but can't seem to have that overall balance somewhat. That Xiaomi 13 Pro looks very interesting though...
Hi ben, did u think the mate 50 pro its a better cam than s23u?
