*crying again* Eva died not too long after this performance. Please listen to Eva's "Autumn Leaves" (acoustic guitar) and her version of "Fields Of Gold" (Sting's song, but he said it belonged to her, once she sang it.) Thank you.
Welcome to Eva's world. Eva performed several acoustic songs. As I feel and hear this - her Over The Rainbow - she stands so high above every other person who has tried to cover the song by making it her journey. She takes us, her audience, on her journey as individual confidants. She goes to a place inside that I imagine not many are allowed to view. It took a few times of listening to discover this is a duet. After I got to the acceptance of how pure and heartfelt her singing is, I realized her guitar was her singing partner, singing warmly, in euphonious chorus with her. Her Guild and her touch on its strings are, indeed, her duet partner. No accompanist could have done the same. Nobody will ever be able to reach the depths of my soul such as Eva did with her journey Over The Rainbow.
Widely considered as the best cover ever done of this song. Eva is one of the finest singers of all time. She was known as a great blues and jazz singer as well. Check out her catalogue on her TH-cam channel. Gone much too soon from melanoma cancer at 34, 10 months after these recordings done live at Blues Alley. Thank you for keeping her special artistry alive and for your reaction.
Love your reaction! Eva was a tremendous talent that sadly left us far too soon. She passed within a year of this recording. If not for a disc jockey in Britain and her family, she may have passed into obscurity. Thank heavens this performance was recorded and she left a few recordings as her legacy. Beautiful voice. Beautiful soul.
I learned about Eva from a segment on an old news show a few years after she passed. I believe it was Nightline. It told the story of guy iin Washington DC playing a cassette of Eva singing this in his car as he was taking his BBC Radio DJ friend to the airport and the DJ was so impressed he gave him the cassette. Back in London, he eventually played the song on the radio and requests to replay it were pouring in. It quickly became a top requested song. Fans started clamoring for a video from BBC not knowing she was passed. Her family provided this segment from her live recording at Blues Alley in DC. It became a top requested video of the year in the UK. Record companies pursued her but couldn’t get her to commit to one genre of music. She did jazz, folk, rock, blues and wasn’t willing to limit herself. This recording was done in January 1996. She passed from melanoma in November. She was only 33. After she died, her family compiled all her recordings they could find and released them on albums that became top sellers. The proceeds were donated to music education. I was in Australia in 1999 and record stores had entire end cap displays devoted to her. But she was still virtually unknown in the US. People know her now. I’ve always said they need to make a movie about her.
I was diagnosed with cancer as well as Linda McCartney about the same time. I had just finished battling cancer when it took Linda and Eva. I sob for her every time I hear and see this video. Listen to Eva's "Autumn Leaves" and "Stormy Monday".
Eva recorded this Jan 3/96 and was diagnosed with melanoma in June, 5 months later and passed Nov 2/96 Sadly most don't even know who she is even though she is one of the greatest singers ever.
This is the perfect time of year to listen to her "Autumn Leaves". Since I first heard the song many years ago, it comes to me at the first sign of falling leaves and stays till Winter.
I first heard Eva in 2003-I was on vacation and her album was playing in a gift shop. They weren’t selling her album. I couldn’t wait to get home and buy it. I have ALL of her CDs now and never get tired of listening to them! I LOVED your reaction!
This is an unbelievably emotive interpretation of Over the Rainbow, especially considering her story. I want to point out her phenomenal guitar artistry - she created this arrangement for both voice and guitar. For another side of Eva, check out her interpretation of Stormy Monday on electric guitar. She kills it.
You will want to check out Stormy Monday, Autumn Leaves, Fields Of Gold, Time After Time versions done Live at Blues Alley. Other greats are I Know You By Heart, Danny Boy, ohh.just pick one. You will love it. They are masterpieces and master classes. Thank you for sharing.
Judy Garland sung the song from the point of view of the wistful child she played in Wizard of Oz. Eva’s version always feels like a broken adult wishing desperately for a better life, which makes it so much more heartbreaking
Every time I listen to Eva sing this song I get tears in my eyes, and both sad and angry that this beautiful soul died at such a young age from that demon called cancer.
A great talent gone way too soon! Fortunately she left us some recordings for us to savor. Gems all, a few to react to are; Fields of Gold, and Autumn Leaves. You can’t go wrong with any of her songs recorded at Blues Alley.
No, there's no better version of this song than this. At least, I've never heard one better. She made it her own. She changed the mood the melody the rhythmic flow. It's darker, more emotional. I cry every time I hear this version, and I don't care, she deserves at least some of my tears.
Thank you for your reaction. I agree Eva's version is the most beautiful. You may want to listen to her cover of Fields of Gold ... even Sting said it was better
Eva does make this her own. Breathtaking. RIP. Israel something I can't remember from Hawaii does a unique version.also very nice.RIP. And the classic Judy Garland from the movie. Lucy Thomas does a beautiful tribute to Eva. Minor changes Lucy style And Lauren Alred does a version where she starts with Israel's version and medolies into Judy's. Very, very good also. And then we have Sydney Christmas who just won one of those competitions singing Lauren's version. In this case it's funny because the show played this when she won the golden buzzer at her tryout. Keep up with the good stuff, thank you.🤠
You're thinking of Iz, Israel Kamakawoole, or some such last name, a Hawaiian artist who did a medley of Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World solo on ukulele that was a world-wide hit. He unfortunately also died at a very young age of complications of morbid obesity.
also prefer this version yet I think it is too melancholy for the movie-Wizard of Oz which was the original version. Judy Garland also did a beautiful job.
Someone once said that Judy Garland was singing about Oz, Eva was singing about heaven. Couldn't have said it better.
I've probably heard this version more than a hundred times. I cry every time.
Her version cannot be beat. It is stunningly beautiful.

Listen to Eva's "Autumn Leaves"
and "Stormy Monday".
It’s like you’ve never heard this song before when you hear Eva’s version!
It is my opinion that she knew she was dying and she was singing about heaven. That is why she sang it so emotionally
I wonder about this too. At that time having Melanoma was sadly kinda considered a death sentence ... you just didn't know how soon it would spread
@@pamstuckey8349 You are 100% correct
Eva recorded this Jan 3/96 and was diagnosed with melanoma in June, 5 months later and passed Nov 2/96

I really love Eva's cover of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. It beautiful.
Snatches a tear from me every time I hear this
I'm familiar with your channel, and when I heard "new to me" I knew what was going to happen... God bless, Ace. We all feel the same way.
The fact that you let it play to the very last guitar stroke, shows you how mesmerising this song is. Truly beautiful. RIP Eva ♥
Eva was a master of phrasing and melody. She poured her heart out into this song and pulled us all into it with her.
Oh, thank you so much for reacting to Eva. I didin't realize you hadn't heard this. RIP, Eva, gone way too soon.
Great arrangement, great voice. She was actually recovering from a cold when this was recorded, you can hear it in her voice.
Watched your reaction again❤️

Certainly not the original but the voice, the guitar and the arrangement are all Eva. Truly incredible.
It’s true what the say, "Only the Good Die Young.” She went to soon.

You’ve got to hear her version of AT LAST
Thank you for your reaction. I agree Eva's version is the most beautiful. You may want to listen to her cover of Fields of Gold ... even Sting said it was better
Lots of good, even great, versions of this song but you just heard the best. Try her version of Songbird.
Love this and I loved the original by Judy Garland as well. Check out Songbird by Eva , beautiful song as well.
Autumn Leaves is also a great one
RIP. She died 10 months after making this video from a melanoma.
Nope, it is the best. There has been nothing yet that surpasses this version. IMO
Try her song "Autumn Leaves"
Best version of the song since Judy Garland

The other amazing cover of this song, is by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, definitely worth a listen, though like Eva, he passed far too soon.
also prefer this version yet I think it is too melancholy for the movie-Wizard of Oz which was the original version. Judy Garland also did a beautiful job.
Kathrine McPhee, American Idol, finals performance. Check it out.
No better version than this one.
